Ricky Martin’s new mustache & soul-patch: dodgy or charming?

Here are some new photos of Ricky Martin rocking some new facial hair at a Mac Viva Glam event in NYC last night. Nicki Minaj was there too, but I prefer to cover Ricky’s appearance. At first, I thought Ricky’s facial hair was kind of gross (especially that soul patch under his bottom lip), but as I was looking through the photos… he’s giving me an old-school Rudolph Valentino vibe. Or maybe Errol Flynn? He just needs to lose the soul patch. I suspect Ricky’s facial hair is for work, though – previews begin next month on the Broadway revival of Evita. Ricky has been cast as Che Guevara, a role originally played (on Broadway) by Mandy Patinkin. Have you ever heard the original Broadway recording with Mandy and Patti LaPone? It’s a revelation – and it makes you realize what a joke Madonna was in that role. She simply didn’t have the voice for it. Anyway, I like the idea of Ricky as Che. You can read more about the revival here.

In additional Ricky news, he has a new interview in Details Mag – you can read the full thing here. Here are some highlights:

What Ricky would do for love: “I canceled a show once to be with someone that I loved. I had one day. I thought, “You live in another country. I live in another country. This is incredible and I feel amazing.” My manager came up with some excuse. It was the most expensive date I’ve ever been on. But hey, that was a very beautiful day.”

Coming out later in life: “You know, when I hear about a boy or girl that comes out when they’re 15, I’m like, “You’re so lucky! Kudos.” I will give you a standing ovation. But there’s nothing you can do about it. You have to go through yesterday to be who you are today.”

Feeling “blessed to be who I am.”: “Well, I don’t know who your God is, but my God doesn’t make mistakes.”

Ricky sang at George W. Bush’s inauguration in 2001, but later at a concert flipped the bird while singing about him: “They gave me the opportunity to represent the Latin community in the inauguration. It was beyond politics. The next day I was in 85 newspapers around the world—front page. A lot of people said, “Would you take a picture with him again?” I said, “Well, he has to do a lot about human trafficking in order for that to happen.” Now I’d say he has to do a lot about human trafficking and the LGBT community.”

Ricky on marriage equality: “I don’t want to blame the government. I think there’s a stolen faith—an interpretation of what God “says.” That’s your God—I have my God. It’s about civil rights. I’m not telling you what to believe. I wish people understood that love manifests in different ways. Allow me to have my life and I won’t mess with yours. That’s when I struggle and get angry and punch the table. And then I talk. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.””

The rumor that he’s renting a $32,000-a-month apartment: “Well, I don’t need anything to live, to be honest. Give me a mattress or a futon on the floor and I’ll be the happiest camper. But then all of a sudden, from one futon I need five bedrooms. There’s me. My kids have a room. The nanny has a room. I’m very lucky to say that my mom, she’s traveling with me and she’s helping me to raise my kids. And then the kids start going to school next week.”

Getting his kids into pre-K in Manhattan: “You have no idea. A lot of people told me about this, and I didn’t know until I actually embarked on the mission. There are documentaries on this. I had to write an essay about my kids. This is pre-K. This is not college. But I understand that’s how it goes. I sat in front of my computer and I opened my heart. Apparently we’re in.”

There’s a lot more in that interview, Ricky talks about his partner of four years and his workouts and stuff. He even talks about Menudo! Oh, well. I wish I could see him play Che! I bet he’ll be really great in that role.

the older he gets the more handsome he is becoming.

    wow.

    • autumndaze says:

Agreed. And he is a philanthropic, kind person.
This is the template of a “celebrity” that I opt to support with my expendable income.
(Celebrity in quotes because the guy is also mega-talented.)
I love all that is Ricky Martin….

  2. Nev says:

the older he gets, the more handsome he is becoming.

    wow!

and Madonna was GREAT in that role actually.

  3. izzyvalentine says:

My boyfriend always has to have a soul-patch when he shaves his beard to a moustache. It’s too itchy and uncomfortable for him if he shaves it off. Maybe it’s the same deal with Ricky…? Who knows.

  4. Agnes says:

He looks like an old-timey Spanish actor. I like the look, makes him look more distinguished.

  5. Eve says:

I don’t like the soul-patch but the moustache works for him. He’s very handsome and I’d hit it — I realized that after I saw this picture:

He’s giving me Eric Bana vibes here. I so would…

  6. Heebeegeebee says:

Charming is the perfect word for this lovely man. It doesn’t matter what he does, or how he looks, he is adorable!

  7. Lola6 says:

    Ummm, no.

  8. TruthTella says:

WOW he’s hot, wish he hadn’t worn those shoes though lol I don’t have anything against them i just don’t think they suit him in these pics.

  9. Asli says:

Soul patches freak me out but he is incredibly smart and right about the equality and different Gods etc. Very charming.

  10. AudreyS says:

    He is almost perfect looking.

  11. T.C. says:

I’m not feeling the soul patch, the mustache is o.k. but it’s all probably for a role. That story about needing to write an essay just to get into pre-K is RIDICULOUS. These programs take themselves too seriously and are full of snobby parents getting their kids into them because they don’t want them to mix with “regular” kids.

  12. bea says:

He looks super handsome – actually, way more attractive than I remembered…..

  13. MJ says:

I’m not a fan of soul patches, but he does kind of look like Errol Flynn, or some other old skeezy film star. It works on him, for some reason.

  14. JenJen says:

Woo hoo, hottie! A soul patch it alright if it’s paired with another bit of facial hair… on its own, it’s creepy.
    Rock it, Ricky!

  15. jasperkitty says:

Not usually a big fan of the soul patch…but he could be wearin’ nuffin and I’d still hit it. 😉

  16. Girl says:

Debonair I think is a good word for him. Is he wearing tennis shoes? Probably a bad choice fashion wise but it makes me smile because it reminds me that he is a busy dad. It probably didn’t happen this way but I picture him running out the door, kissing the kiddos good bye, and accidentally grabbing the wrong shoes:)

    • ClumsyMe says:

Debonair!!!! Love that word!!! And yes that word describes him perfectly here. He looks like he belongs in old school Hollywood with this look. Also how Yummy is he?

  17. Mindy says:

I think he looks HOT. I know it’s for Evita… but it SUITS HIM.

  18. monette says:

Always loved him since his first song and always will. too bad he is gay. I would so hit that!

  19. Euphorima says:

Ok? so what’s up with that tie?

  20. carrie says:

    zorrrooooooooooooooo!

  21. Aiobhan says:

Mustaches and soul patches normally freak me out and make me wonder whether the man has a van with tinted windows and a members only jacket. But this combo sitting on his face does not really bother me all that much. I think if I just looked at the photos and not had read the excerpts I would be a little grossed out. The interview was a good read. He just seems so comfortable and sincere with everything he says and does that I am slightly jealous. I want to know his secret.

  22. Maya says:

I love his quotes on civil rights and marriage equality: “Allow me to have my life and I won’t mess with yours.” Awesome.

  23. INeedANap says:

Fun fact — my favorite priest at my church in college was a choreographer for Menudo. We all knew Padre Alvarez was gay, his long-time boyfriend led the choir. Idk how I feel about it from a religious standpoint, but they were both awesome people and the parish didn’t care.

  24. mia girl says:

    Me gusta Ricky Martin 🙂

  25. OMSS says:

OMG, I’d never thought I would say this but he looks great! I never found him attractive before but now he is just too sexy with that mustache and soul patch!!!

  26. Guest says:

Valentino indeed! Martin looks fit, healthy and happy and if he continues to take care of himself, in 20 years he’ll be the second coming of the very handsome and very distinguished Caesar Romero. Looking at Martin with the mustache (I like) and the soul patch (not so much), made me think of the current debauched face of Eddie Cibrian. Would you believe that Martin is 40 years old, a year and a half OLDER than Cibrian? I compare the two because Cibrian was famed for his very good looks. Now, Cibrian looks bloated and prematurely aged — makes me wonder if he’s a very, very heavy drinker — compared to the older Martin. Go figure. Success with your show, Ricky! And health and happiness!

  27. Ron says:

    I want to lick him.

  28. Kim says:

I am not a fan of facial hair at all but Ricky rocks it. He is so handsome! He looks better than he ever has. I think he is finally living the life he wants: not living a lie (being in closet) and having babies & it shows that he loves his life now. He looks fantastic.

  29. Katherine says:

wow… he looks great!!!! i’m feeling the stach surprizingly….

  30. dahlia1947 says:

I think he looks good. Especially when he wrinkles his eyes a little. I am a Huge, Huge, fan of Old Hollywood and he is totally channeling Clark Gable and Don Ameche! I love it!

  31. Camille (The original) says:

I’ve never found him really that attractive but the facial hair is doing it for me. He looks great.

  32. telesma says:

I could totally see him cast as Wyatt Earp in that ‘stache. He needs a Stetson and some boots. Right now.

  33. Chris says:

I saw his pic somewhere and first thought was ‘wow this guy is cute’ and then saw it was Ricky Martin and thought wow, he’s really able to pull off that mustache. I think he looks hot. He looks grown up, he kind of had a baby face, but this look fits him now.
