Christopher Plummer, 82, wins his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor

God, who doesn’t love Christopher Plummer? Captain Von Trapp, y’all! He’s a lot more than Captain Von Trapp though – he’s been a working non-stop since the early 1950s, in television, theater and film. So after sixty years in the business, and no history of any major awards, isn’t it nice that at the age of 82, he’s on this crazy awards streak?

Plummer came into tonight’s Oscars as the closest thing to a sure bet – he had already won the Golden Globe, a Critics Choice Award, a SAG Award, a Spirit Award, a BAFTA, and numerous critics awards, all for his quiet turn in the independent film, Beginners where Plummer plays a dying man who comes out of the closet in his last months on earth. So while Plummer’s Best Supporting Actor Oscar victory wasn’t surprising, it was well-deserved, a perfect confluence of a wonderfully tender, resonant performance from a man with decades of enviable work under his belt. It was for the performance and for his career. Well done!

When Plummer won, I was surprised he forgot to kiss his date for the evening, his wife of 41 years, Elaine. She’s been his date throughout the awards season, which is lovely. Elaine is actually his third wife… but I’m not going to judge him. He got it right in the end, you know? And he clearly adores her. Anyway, in his speech, he said, in part:

[To the Oscar statue] You’re only two years older than me darling, where have you been all my life?” I have to thank my fellow nominees, Kenneth, Jonah, Nick, Max… I’m so proud to be in your company… I wouldn’t be here without Mike Mills… Ewan McGregor, that superb artist, who I would share this award with if I had any decency, which I don’t….and finally, my long suffering wife Eliane, who deserves a Nobel Peace Prize for coming to my rescue every day of my life…”

Congrats to Mr. Plummer! YAY!! I’m really happy that he won. I loved that he got a standing ovation, but I also loved that Plummer is too much of pro to hog the spotlight, and he didn’t draw everything out. Pith is an underrated virtue, and Mr. Plummer is a classy gentleman.

i’ve had a longtime crush on him… ever since I first saw him as captain von trapp as a kid.

    well done, mr. plummer :).

    • Jeneral says:

Oh God, me too. I had the super bad hots for Captain Von Trapp, and he gets angry at people like me who “only” see him in that character (must be annoying for an actor who is obviously talented and has done so much more than a single role to which he is constantly referred), but I can’t help it. I haven’t actually seen much of his other work, but I do think he’s a great actor.

But I can never get over the brooding, annoyed scowl he sported for much of The Sound of Music. It was so sexy! So shoot me Mr Plummer!

    • barbie says:

  8. Jayna says:

There is always something beautiful when the old guard wins, actors/actresses classically trained in the theatre. They give such beautiful speeches that bring the glamour of Hollywood.

  9. Nessa says:

He is amazing. His speech was the best I’ve heard in a long time.

  17. The Original Mia says:

Loved his speech. So happy for him. Class act.

I’m just now finding out he & Amanda Plummer are related & estranged. Had no idea.

  18. L says:

Aren’t he and Amanda back on good terms? I know they didn’t speak when she was younger.

And considering he’s been married to the third wife since 1970 (that’s 42 years) I agree-finally got it right!

    • Carol says:

He mentioned Amanda in his speech as his daughter who always makes him proud. I hope they reconciled. Great, well-deserved win!!

  19. WOM says:

Someone on twitter noted that the lapel pin Plummer wore to the Oscars is an Order of Canada pin — W00t!

  23. Dibba says:

Yes, I got a little teary eyed when he spoke. Long overdue for a great actor. I was hoping he’d break into “Edelweiss”, the song from Sound of Music which I danced to at my wedding with my father. “Beginners” looks good too and now I want to see it.

  24. lambchops says:

    I’d still hit it.

  25. jamminatorr says:

Yayyyy Canada! And yay Plummer! I live close to Stratford, Ontario – where he has a large presence in the Stratford Theater Festival, so this means good things for my community and Stratford in general!

  26. Stacy Dresden says:

He was one of the best dressed men at the Awards, to boot. That velvet smoking jacket – hawt! I wish more guys would take fashion risks (a little more color, different fabrics etc). They could learn a thing or two from the older gents!

  27. Aqua says:

I have to just say as a fellow Canadian,I can’t tell you how proud I am that this fine talented extraordinary actor has finally received an Oscar which clearly was long over due.

  28. Camille (The original) says:

I loved that he won and I loved his speech too.

  29. Lisa says:

    The best. Go, Canada!

  30. Ruffian9 says:
