Jessica Chastain in Alexander McQueen at the Oscars: did she get it right?

Oscar nominee Jessica Chastain was in a black and gold embossed Alexander McQueen that earned her a lot of accolades last night. I didn’t love the dress, but I didn’t hate it either. On another actress, one not as sweet and likable as Chastain, I may have thought it was awful. She is just so damn nice that I can’t hate on her dress. I think several of you described it best in the comments “that dress is wearing her.” She’s not working it, and it’s overwhelming her and doesn’t look like her style. Chastain’s hair and makeup were perfection, though, as we’ve seen this entire awards season.

Jessica was so unassuming on the red carpet, and she adorably brought her grandmother, Marilyn, on her date. She told Ryan Seacrest on the red carpet that “this year is just unbelievable… I feel like I’m walking through a fog. It doesn’t feel like this is a normal day.” She also told the story of how she learned, while at Paris Fashion Week, that she was nominated for an Oscar. “I did not think I was going to get a nomination. I was in Paris Fashion week and I went to turn my phone off and I had like 12 missed calls.” You could tell she was still awed by it and wasn’t taking her success for granted.

I like her so much, and I just want her to get her fashion right. She sort-of did here, by some people’s estimation. It could have been much worse, and it has been for her this season. I’m trying to be diplomatic about it, but it’s just the bizarre pattern on her bustline and skirt. It’s too complicated and busy and the effect is overwhelming. Still, a strong showing for Jessica comparatively.

Jessica’s hair and makeup were amazing though. She’s just so pretty. Did you see how worried she looked right before the Best Actress was announced? She was concerned that her costar Viola might not win, and we know that she didn’t. I’m a little in love with Jessica, she’s so unaffected and genuine and its in no way a schtick or an act.

She is so pretty in a fresh-faced and natural way. Hopefully she will stay that way! I thought the dress, while maybe a bit dramatic for her, really worked. Beautiful look overall.

  2. Bite me says:

Love her… Have watched all the million of movies she’s been … Yay for redbox

  3. Blankverse says:

Still love the dress, hair and makeup. I love medieval history – which the dress hints at – and so I think is why I love it. There were so many boring dresses last night that this one still stands out for me as one of the best. And yes, it helps that she seems like a genuine sweetheart.

  4. lulu says:

This would have been amazing on Viola. I wish there was an app where you could change all the dresses onto other people.

    • LAK says:

i thought that too!! Hated Viola’s dress on her, but when i saw this dress, i thought THIS is what she should have worn because it has way too much attitude for Jessica. Jessica should have worn something sweet, just like her.

  5. Aiobhan says:

I love her and unfortunately I have to agree that this dress is wearing her, not vice versa. Not even remotely on the worst dress list but far from the best. I love her hair and makeup though, very fresh and clean. It shows off her best parts of her face without looking like a clown.

  6. LadyJane says:

Beautiful face and dress. Hair fail. Why does she look like she just tied her hair back to do the school run? I would have liked to see more of a ‘do to compliment the strong lines of the dress. Something sleek and back would have made this look PERFECTION. (And I love her as an actress – we will see much more of her in future.)

  7. Asli says:

Gorgeous! I actually kind of like the dress. You can tell it’s Alexander McQueen.

  8. TruthTella says:

I love the dress on her, especially with her complection/hair colour. You can always tell a McQueen dress (even when Marchesa fail at ripping them off) they just look so ornate and high quality.

  9. brin says:

I didn’t like the dress at first, but it grew on me. I think her hair and makeup helped soften the overall look.

    • phlyfiremama says:

I hear you! At first I thought it looked like something awful from beyonce’s mothers line house of dereon, but it grew on me as well~

  10. Jacq says:

Am I the only one who, at a glance, confuses her with Amy Adams? I don’t like that dress one bit. I don’t like patterns like that, that seem to draw attention to the crotch-area. Her hair and makeup, however, are always spot-on.

  11. Helenny says:

She looks so good. That dress is glorious and her face is glowing. If I were her grandma, I would be really proud!

  12. kit says:

That’s the best outfit I’ve seen her in and one of my faves from last night. She looks beautiful and the dress is stunning.

  13. Zimmer says:

    Love her and it!

  14. normades says:

Much much better. Her features didn’t look all washed out as usual. The redder color and length is much more becoming on her.

  15. Jayna says:

I love this look from head to toe. Thumbs up.

  16. mia girl says:

Best hair and makeup of the night.

  17. chloew says:

i am absolutely in LOVE with that hair color
wow, wish i could get that

    • DoMaJoReMc says:

I totally agree! I was a redhead all while I was growing up, but unfortunately it was not popular in the 60’s & 70’s. If I knew it would come out like this, I would be making my hair appointment right now! Loved everything about this look.

  18. Sarah says:

I think that the dress is great but not for a redhead, it would have suited a brunette better!

  19. Kate #2 says:

I think she needed a very sleek up-do with that dress. Having said that, both she and it were exquisite – it’s just that it wore her, I agree, and a more sophisticated hairstyle could have reversed that equation IMO.

  20. lucy2 says:

The detailing is quite pretty, and I don’t think it looks bad on her at all, but it’s too much dress for her. All the focus goes on the gown, she just sort of fades into the background.

  21. ohiogirl says:

Love the dress and her whole look. She is just so beautiful, and I love the coloring of the dress with her hair and skin!

  22. Marianne says:

The dress isn’t horrible. But far from being my favourite. Kind of safe. Nothing really wowed me.

  23. The Truth Fairy says:

She was my favorite look of the night by far.

  24. Jen34 says:

I didn’t like the dress at all. I don’t like black and gold together.

  25. marge says:

i love the dress, but to me, it needed a more polished hairdo. A simpe low bun wuld have made it a million times more glamorous

  26. Julie says:

Beautiful lady but I can’t stand that dress.

  27. Sumodo1 says:

That hair is “perfection?” Bed-head at best and the dress wears HER!

  28. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

She is adorable and I actually thought her dress was one of the best from last night. Hope to see her in more films.

  29. Shelly says:

Her hair looked truly amazing. The color was perfect on her. I thought she looked beautiful.

  30. Mara says:

Wow this dress is stunning and she is so pretty .

  31. Everlyo says:

Her hair make up team finally got it right! She is gorgeous!! The dress is beautiful but overwhelming .

  32. Stacy Dresden says:

This is one of the best dresses I’ve ever seen. The black/gold combo is sophisticated and bold, the embroidery looks very fine & has a nice pattern and texture to it, and it fits her wonderfully.

  33. blonde on the dock says:

For me she was easily the most beautiful woman there!

  34. Tweakspotter says:

Love her she’s from MY TOWN! LOVE LOVE LOVE HER!

  35. Kim says:

I hate brocade but she pulls it off nicely. The cut of the dress is beautiful & fits her perfectly.

  36. Maritza says:

My favorite dress of the Oscars, I love it!

  37. Mi says:

I simply loved the dress, I think it’s my overall favorite Oscar-dress this year.

  38. Camille (The original) says:

She is really beautiful and her hair and makeup were perfect, but I didn’t really care for the dress. It was the pattern on the bust and hips that I didn’t like. Ruined what could have been a nice dress IMO.

  39. UniqJazz says:

Loveee the dress and her hair/makeup !

  40. Jenna says:

I loved the dress and her hair and makeup. She glowed, and the dress was suitably dramatic. It was one of the best of show.

  41. JuliaDomna says:

She’s got a Jessica Simpson vibe.

  42. Hector says:

    Perfect dress, it¡s like a Velazquez paint ¡¡¡ more jewels ¡ ¡ ¡

  43. AnnieC says:

It’s a beautiful dress but it is wearing her. It would’ve worked better with her colouring as a paler colour & if it tapered in rather than going for an all-out train! Well done Jess!

  44. Vera says:

It’s one that looks better at night. In the day time, plus with her pale skin, it washes her out sooo much. But inside the theatre and the later pictures looks nice to me. I like it, especially as a dress for a nominee that was likely not going to win. It was enough, but not too much. I think if she’d gone for more jewelry it could have been bad.

  45. erin says:

i friggen fraggen love this dress with her coloring.

  46. Amanda Garrett says:

I just adore Jessica Chastain! I agree that she just seems so sweet and genuine. I thought this dress was BEAUTIFUL on her and went so well with her skin tone and hair color. Best dressed!

  47. Amanda Garrett says:

  49. Amanda Garrett says:

  50. Isa says:

I love her hair color! It’s the same color as my children’s!
I don’t care for the dress.

  51. Louise says:

Win for Jess. She looks beautiful.

  52. Sweettart says:

I love her hair. I actually like the side view of her in the dress.

It’s the front that is overwhelming for her. It’s too much gold embroidery on the front. It needed someone a lot bustier to carry it off.

  53. Nibbi says:

Dress is totally stunning and props to her for bringing some seriously interesting, real fashion to the red carpet. everyone else’s dresses are made notable pretty much by how weirdly they are draped ie generally how much skin in what sorta way they can show, and generally all in one color tone, and bla. this thing is simply spectacular and she’s gorgeous.

  54. Nibbi says:

…man, i want that dress for MYSELF. and, like, an occasion to wear it, too… 😉
