No NO NO!!!!! Look what they’ve done to my beloved Dark Shadows – Beetlejuice redux + American Pie = no thank you

    • islandwalker says:

Agree! The few of us old enough to remember the original Dark Shadows remember that is was creepy, dark, mildly campy but was scary with heart. I remember my parents not wanting us to watch it so we would all go over to friends house in secret. lol.

This is just more of the same ol’, same ol from Burton and Depp. Looks like everything else they do together; same make-up, overly stylized, no heart or depth…just the same imagery over and over again. I’ll never forgive them for the ‘remake’ of Willy Wonky.

    • Cleveland Girl says:

My thoughts EXACTLY. This looks absurd.

    • curegirl0421 says:

Yes I’m really disappointed by this. I love Depp & Burton, especially together, and I know that they have dark work in their repertoire – look at Sweeney Todd, and even Edward Scissorhands only had carefully placed camp. But this?? This is like Barnabus Collins meets Austin Powers. The ridiculous television bit? The disco? Ug. I’m prepared to be disappointed.

  2. Lisa says:

To me, “Dark Shadows” does not look “… good?” but bad.

It’s too bad, too, because I like Eva Green and I like (or used to like, anyway) Johnny Depp. And they’re both sorta odd in their own wonderfully individual ways, so you’d think it would work. It just doesn’t, for me anyway.

  3. mln76 says:

My favorite part of the Karl Lagerfield article:

I actually have two houses. This house here, it’s only for sleeping and sketching, and I have another house two-and-a-half meters away for lunch and dinner and to see people, and where the cook is and all that. I don’t want that here. Even if the place is huge, I want to be alone. If I want something, I call them, and they’re next door, they come.

THAT is what it means to have money.

  4. Indira says:

Nice! Fun year for movies 😀

  5. brin says:

    Not sure….two fangs up?

  6. dahlia says:

oh dear, this looks bad. I’m sorta over Johnny Depp doing “wacky”‘ all the time.

  7. fabgrrl says:

Johnny Depp looks amazing in this. I can’t wait to see it.

  8. Alexis says:

What a shock. Depp in weird pale makeup and costume acting weird. *sarcasm*

  9. Adrien says:

Looks ok to me. And Eva is surprisingly funny. As for Johnny, that’s a good Jarvis Cocker impression right there, sir.

  10. Samigirl says:

Seriously, does the man age? He has some killer genetics.

  11. a nony mouse says:

i don’t care what anyone says. Johnny Depp + Tim Burton = AWESOME in my books. i would 100% shell out for this, it looks FUN.

  12. Hmmm says:

    Edward Scissorhands Redux, more likely.

  13. grabbyhands says:

I’m not sure how I feel about this. I was hoping they’d go for drama rather than kooky schtick this time. I know Tim Burton does more of the latter rather than the former, but still….

    • RovingLass says:

I agree, although I would be very interested to see what Burton could do outside his comfort zone with a drama. I think he’s very talented but where his style was once daring…his method has become a safe routine.

      • ZenB!tch says:

Did you see Big Fish? Not Burton’s biggest hit nor was it exactly a drama, it’s still weird but it wasn’t um… like this or like Sweeney Todd. It was nice and not over the top and there is no Johnny Depp in sight.

      • Person3514 says:

Big Fish is amazing!! Such a great movie!!

  14. Newtsgal says:

Tim Burton claimed he was going to stick close to the original Dark Shadows, this can’t not be further from the truth.
As a fan of DS, it’s sad!

I usually like TB/JD movies but not this one.
This is more of a Dark Shadows meets Addams family/Edward Scissorhands.

    • ZenB!tch says:

Eww! I forgot about those. I hated the Addams Family remakes. I do remember that show (or at least the cartoon that came with Scooby) and they RUINED IT! This is exactly like that. Thanks !

  15. Maya says:

Susan Sarandon is awesome. And I didn’t know Andrew Garfield was doing Death of a Salesman on Broadway! Wish I could see it…

    • Girl says:

I’m sorry but when someone doesn’t want to pay for something they are morally opposed to, they are no more limiting your access to it any more than I’m limiting your access to lunch by the fact that I’m not buying your lunch for you.

  16. Lairen says:

This looks ridiculous. I want to watch.

  17. Jover says:

Agree Letty I loved Dark shadows Scary and campy for its time, and much too slow paced for today’s younger crowd accustomed to blood, guts, action every second; why does Hollywood have to suck the life out of everything; come up with new things or just fade out.

    • ZenB!tch says:

But there are no blood and no guts, just bad make up and COMEDY! I want blood, I want guts, I want romance, I want hot guys, I want music, I want a vampire who doesn’t make me pine for Edward (I HATE Twilight).

Seriously, I’m not young nor am I a boomer but if they want to appeal to young people why not take new material like the dreaded Twilight or the Hunger Games or the Dragon Tattoo and all those books I am too old to read or want to see?

If they want to appeal to their age group then be nice to the source material update don’t ruin. The obvious place to go with this would be darker since it’s not the 60s anymore.

  18. Sumodo1 says:

Why, why, why? We original “Dark Shadows” fans–boomers–have to be insulted by this…sideshow of a movie?

    • ZenB!tch says:

Because they are fair and they insulted baby Gen Xers when they redid Willy Wonka? That has to be it, they can’t think this is good.

I don’t remember Dark Shadows but I never thought it was a comedy. I was 2 when Willy Wonka came out, 41 years later I still love it.

I’m guessing the DS remake is as bad and as offensive as the WW one was.

I’m afraid of what they are going to do to Gen Y or worse my parents Generation, the pre-Boomers.

  19. sup says:

lol this is ridic. terrible comedy 🙂

  20. Dusty says:

Hey, why did you pull the article about the Jolie -Pitt kids’ eating habits?

  21. jules says:

this looks AWESOME!!! Can’t WAIT to see IT!!

  22. cerulean says:

I am over Depp. Just over him. He looks like Jack from the White Stripes here with a mixture of every other costumed character he has ever played.

Karl’s kitty is just adorable. I can see why he loves her so much.

    Tyra’s wig is indeed bad.

    • ZenB!tch says:

OUCH! That worse than what I said. I thought he looked like Adam Lambert does Frankenstein but Jack White is a much better insult. He really looks like that.

*I’ve never gotten the greatness of Jack White.

  23. FingerBinger says:

I like Johnny Depp, but he seems to be playing the same character over & over again.

  24. jojo says:

Oh jeez – Jennifer Aniston has been photographed with a rock on THAT finger. Kaiser, let’s get the party started!

  25. sup says:

umm what’s so amazing about that pencil artwork? i mean sure he spent millions of hours to get every detail but it’s nothing new. so many pencil artists just trace/grid the image and then work on it real hard to make it uncreatively just like the original. i don’t know i just don’t like photorealistic artworks (nothing wrong with realism but blindly copying a photo doesn’t add anything, imo. just be a photography artist instead! just my two cents)

  26. Akula says:

Re: Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows – I will totally be there, popcorn and all. It looks fun. I have never seen the original so I’m definitely going to go for some OTT comedy. But i love the tim/johnny/helena combo and I really liked Eva in Casino Royale, so i’m psyched for this.

  27. Mark says:

I wished they would have played it straight but darker and more twisted.
Sad really just another apparently brainless bad comedy.
    What next, ‘The Munsters?’

  28. Yeipi says:

“Dark shadows” looks so funny!!…i can’t wait to see the movie

  29. Diane says:

I hope Johnny does justice to the show he loved so much. It was certainly one of a kind, and this looks like a new take on it…I will certainly be there on 11 May to see it.

  30. Mourning the Death of Music says:

    NO!

  31. dholmas says:

The trailer is nothing like my beloved original series. I will see it but will remind myself to not think of the 60’s series. Same old performance from JD and TB.

  32. HadleyB says:

Karl doesn’t drap? He does nothing more than sketch and send them on his iphone? Really??

It sounds lazy, and boring like he isn’t even involved in the line. He really needs to be let go.. I am so over him, his line, his attitude. Everything.

Someone with too much money doing things only super rich people do, and I don’t care if he earned it, it sounds stupid. We talk about how actresses purse their lips or jut them out, he is a famous lip jutter. Ugh.

    • sup says:

exactly. and chanel has been shit for at least 3 years now. except for the purses, there is nothing exciting or beautiful in their lines.

  33. Alice says:

Sure, the movie is a comedy, but I’ll still see it. Although, in some of the stills of DS Eva Green looks sort of like January Jones, though I’m sure Eva’s a much better actress.

  34. kelly says:

I was a kid when Dark Shadows was on and just loved its darkness. Can’t believe they are taking that awesome series and utterly ruining it. won’t be seeing this.

    • ZenB!tch says:

My take is they don’t think that many people remember it – especially the under 30 crowd that allegedly goes to all the movies.

I don’t remember it and I’m 43 next month – HOWEVER – I think those of us under 45 or whatever the remembering it threshold is are still smart enough to recognize “bad” when we see it even if we don’t know the reference material.

It’s actually on Netflix streaming which I bet they didn’t count on. I haven’t clicked on it because it looks too cheesy for my 43 year old 21st century eyes but so is Star Wars at this point and I loved it is a kid.

This is not at all what I was expecting. I was expecting an update – modern with BETTER make up, reasonably serious with a dash of camp. PG-13 scary and a realistic looking human like vampire. I thought people didn’t know the character was a vampire – obviously he is not human with that make up on. He looks like Adam Lambert does Frankenstein!

  35. Beth says:

What is this? Depp CANNOT act without 10 lbs., of makeup on his face. I’m totally over him. He’s just trying to rake in the dough. Same weirdo character.
Too bad because I love Eva Green and Michelle Pfeiffer. These two women are way out of his league acting wise. Sorry, to sound so harsh but I’m sick of his weirdo getups and “acting”.

  39. Beth says:

Too bad Depp’s character looks like a mish mash of all his other characters. I would have loved to see Eva Green and Michelle Pfeiffer. They are way out of his league.

    • ZenB!tch says:

Good point, it might have been better with less Depp. It could turn out to be like Alice where the star was really Alice and the Hatter was upstaged by the Red Queen.

It also might have been better with less make up. The make up is ridiculous.

This actually reminds me of “The Brady Bunch Movie” where the movie is in the present day but the stars are stuck in the 70s. 60s in this case.

  41. Sasha says:

I don’t care if Depp is doing something similar to his other roles. This type of role is where he SHINES. Why shouldn’t he keep on doing it? It hasn’t got boring yet (at least not to me), and I can’t imagine anyone else playing these kooky characters the way he does.

Eva looks BRILLIANT in it. I love her camp!!

    I’m deffos watching this 🙂

  42. LadyBird83 says:

When are people gonna realize Tim Burton in not really director? He keeps ruining perfectly good movies! “Willy Wonka” was a total mess! And Johnny Depp? I am sorry but he can only do “drama Depp” or “quirky Depp” so over it.

  43. itstrue says:

how many reincarnations of the same character must we endure? no more Johnny Depp in white face and black lipstick.

    • judyjudy says:

I love Johnny Depp, but I agree with you. I don’t care to see his movies any more. It’s the same old, same old.

  44. Manuela says:

i never was impressed by Vanessa if it true and he had affair with incredible Eva……i ll very happy. i love both but Eva ….i love her

  45. Romia says:

I adore Johnny Depp but I would burn at the stake every film that Tim Burton has directed. Every. Single. One.

As for this…Dark Shadows…wtfgdh…this pos might even end up deserving its own little circle of hell.

    • ZenB!tch says:

From the Tim Burton fan side…. I am so F-ING sick of Johnny Depp. Tim Burton needs to drop his crutch and move to someone else.

Of course Depp is incapable of having a hit without looking like a clown. The movie with Angelina, Rum Diaries… all flops. And now for some reason Burton seems to think he can’t have a hit without dressing Johnny Depp up as a clown.

I loved Alice – believe it or not – but it was the exception to the rule. If I see Jack Sparrow one more time I will throw up more than Santorum seeing JFK.

      • Romia says:

        Fair enough.

And in the interest of full disclosure, the 21 Jump Street reboot enrages me.

  46. greygoose125 says:

This doesn’t look like the Dark Shadows I recall from my childhood. Johnny Depp sounds as if he’s portraying Jack Sparrow in pancake makeup. I think I’ll pass on this.

    • blasted1 says:

I hate to have to agree with you, but I do. I wonder what Johnny thinks about this rendition of the tv series he said he used to run home after school to see? I’m thinking Addams Family and Johnny looks like a grown up Eddie Munster from that other show.

      • ZenB!tch says:

This reminds me of why I didn’t like Depp in the first place (a long, long time ago). He thinks he’s a rockstar he thinks he is such an independent spirit. He is such an artiste. He looks greasy so people won’t think he’s a pretty boy but the truth is he is a HACK!.

He was in 21 Jump Street a show a real independent spirit would have been morally against. As a HS student at the time. I was outraged. Still am. NARC!

Fast forward 25 years, he sanctions this blasphemy of a show that he allegedly revered as a child and is beloved by people slightly older than I am as a serious piece of 60s goth. I’m sure it wasn’t super scary because the censors wouldn’t have allowed it but I bet it was scary for the 60s.

Depp’s a hack and Burton just got old.

But I’ll always love Beetlejuice, Jack Skellington and Oingo Boingo.

  47. ZenB!tch says:

Is it supposed to be a comedy? The original Dark Shadows came out before I was born (and I am pretty old) but I’ve always been vaguely aware of it and I didn’t think it was a comedy.

I vaguely remember a TV remake of the old Dark Shadows in the late 80s and it wasn’t a comedy. The vampire didn’t look like a clown. It looks really funny but this is so not what I expected, so I’m not sure it’s supposed to be funny or if its so bad that I think it’s funny and having worked for the place that brought you Pirates 1 – 4 for 6 years, before I left in January – I’m kind of SICK of Johnny Depp.

I hated the Willy Wonka too. I have no idea what the book is like but Gene Wilder did not come off as a creepy MJ pedo.

  48. mew says:

I needed to see just the one pic to say “no, this doesn’t look good”. It’s the same, the same, not interesting. Next!

  49. Claire says:

If i watch this one, it’ll be for Michelle Pfeiffer and Helena Bonham Carter.
