Lily Colins wears D&G at the ‘Mirror, Mirror’ premiere: cute or busted?

Last night was the big LA premiere of Mirror, Mirror, the horrible-looking version of Snow White with hairy Lily Collins as Snow and Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen. Ordinarily, I would make Julia the lead, because Julia rarely does red carpets these days so it’s always notable when she does. However, Julia looked meh, and I’d rather focus my attention on little Lily. First of all, I like Lily’s Dolce & Gabbana dress. It’s appropriate for her age (23) and frame (petite but not child-like). It’s also occasion-appropriate – her first big lead role in a big studio film. This is her “coming out” as a movie star, and the dress fits.

But seriously, let’s talk about the hair situation. And I mean ALL of the hair. Look, I understand that Lily is hellbent on keeping her eyebrows as-is, but this hairstyle just makes me think that she actually IS embarrassed by them. Because these bangs cover most of the eyebrows, it feels like she gave herself bangs on purpose instead of simply tweezing. Still, you can see some of the eyebrows peeking out. And it’s… not a good situation. Once again, she’s a pretty little thing – my only issue is with this one grooming issue. I don’t even mind her bangs, and you know how I feel about bangs. I know, I know. Some of you are brow-accepting, but I just find it so distracting, especially because now she’s doing the peekaboo brows. I just feel like she would look so much prettier if she just took off some of those hairs that are trying to make their way into a full-fledged unibrow.

And here’s Julia in a pantsuit, with the director. My mom always loved Julia back in the day, and my dad always said, “She’s pretty now, but she’s not going to age well.” He was right.

Last thing: did you know Sean Bean was in this movie??!?!? He plays the King. OMG. I’m so embarrassed for him.

I don’t think her eyebrows are all that bad. To denounce the way she looks based on her eyebrows is silly – she’s pretty with or without tweezers.

  2. Katren says:

Those brows are terrible! And now bangs trauma too! how unfortunate 🙁

    • Nance says:

I don’t understand the bang problem on this site. Is every haircut must be the same? A little bit a variety doesn’t hurt. As long as it’s well done…

When I look the Lily haircut VS Julia haircut here, they are both beautiful, but I prefer Lily bang.

    • Nance says:

Is someone would look at Audrey Hepburn Sabrina-era and say “bang trauma”? I think about her too because the eyebrows and her face remember her a little.

Lily is super cute here in my opinion, but ridiculous in the trailer of the movie, I don’t think they put her at her better advantage. She’s young anyway, she will learn her assets. I hope she will not pluck her eyebrows like crazy, at least not to enter in the formatted standards of today…

    • Loulou says:

It’s the scousebrow and it’s big in the UK.

  3. Kamile says:

I think that Julia is aging extremely well. I’m jealous.

    • RocketMerry says:

I agree. She’s not the cute little thing she was as a young woman but she’s not unattractive at all. I like how she’s aging.

    • lh says:

I agree! I’m not a huge fan of hers but on the aging front, she has aged remarkably well.

    • Laurabb says:

i agree. How has she not aged well? She looks great to me.

  4. KLO says:

The eyebrows are awesome. But i hate the trend of putting tiny girls in these poufy dresses. It just doesn’t look pretty or interesting.

  5. Sherry says:

I interviewed Lily a few weeks ago and I have a whole new outlook on her eyebrow situation now. She was so lovely and sweet and she doesn’t give an eff what anyone thinks about her brows. 😉

    That dress is adorable.

What is Julia’s deal lately? She almost never dresses up for the red carpet anymore?!

    • ol cranky says:

      good for her

my only problem is the dress which poofs out at the hips and actually makes her look bigger there than she is; a straighter skirt would have been more flattering

  6. I think her eyebrows are fine.

    • Alix says:

They’re lovely. Let’s not forget, people used to get into a tizzy over Brooke Shields’ brows back in the day, and they were gorgeous, too.

      • Lee says:

Brooke Shields had larger brows, but they were groomed somewhat. Nobody is suggesting she tweeze them like a gangbanger, but even if she cleaned them up a little, they’d still be strong.

      • ol cranky says:

@Lee – they’re not poorly groomed. she has them thicker and more natural but they are shaped and not growing out of control. people have got to stop acting like she’s got Andy Rooney’s unkempt brows

  7. Lilian says:

Oh please, she’s gorgeous. Will you stop about the unibrow thing? And I think this Snow White version is fun, I’m going to take my 9 and 7 years old nieces to watch this.

  8. cr says:

Poor Sean Bean. Love the suit, but the hair.

I wonder if he gets to live in this role, since he seems to die in most every other role.

    • CG says:

OMG I know! He’s got a “There’s Something about Mary” situation going on with his hair. I’d totally still hit it, though. 😉

    • Liane says:

Almost makes me want to see the movie, you know, to see if Sean Bean makes it through alive or not. (I’m guessing “not.”)

    • Bored suburbanhousewife says:

His hair has been terrible recently. Totally flat, dishwater color plus jowly. So tragic when I think of how beautiful he was in the 90s. But
He will always be my number one!

  9. maggie says:

I love her eyebrows! I don’t think the bangs have anything to do with eyebrow shame. She’s gorgeous regardless.

  10. Tanguerita says:

Roberts is 44 years old and she looks fantastic.

  11. lucy2 says:

    I like Lily’s dress, and Julia’s suit.
    Check out the director’s shoes.

  12. Vanessa says:

Get with it. Models are booking campaigns because of brows like these. They are gorgeous and youthful. Julia is still looking great.

  13. Amea says:

In truth, MOST woman are very hairy (arms, legs, stomachs, armpits, upper lips, chins–everywhere!) and I feel like bushy eyebrows are the least “offensive” of any hairy body part. Like someone said above, the fashion industry is going crazy for these thick eye-brows and other “ugly” traits like gaps in the middle of front teeth. I think these kinds of things set a person apart, and show that they are confident and not so concerned with whether others think they’re pretty enough. A bold brow is way more youthful and natural than a skinny, clown-arched tweezed brow. I just wish this site would stop giving her a hard time about something so trivial.

  14. jano1981 says:

Oh. I like a natural brow. My kids (7&9) and I can’t wait for this movie! Again some movie are just for fun. I would be surprised if they ever thought this would be an award winner.

  15. Aiobhan says:

At this point the best thing about her outfit is the bushy eyebrows. The dress is too voluminous and the color makes her look drab and washed out. She needs a pop of color or something to liven up this dress. The hair needs to be brushed and she needs a new pair of shoes.

Julia looks fine. The suit fits well but is overall very boring. The best dressed person here is the director.

    Sean Bean is hot.

  16. boogle says:

I think they both look lovely. My 8 year daughter is excited about seeing this movie.

  17. Jackie says:

this girl is just as boring as her father and his music.

julia looks really old in these pics. her makeup is too matte.

  18. Lis says:

    I love the brows.

Maybe it’s because I have really thick brows myself, but I don’t see the problem. They’re nowhere near a unibrow.

The dress is nice, but would have been so much better if it ended just below the knee.

As is, it just overwhelms and stumpifies her.

  19. Birdie says:

I absolutely love the dress and her hair. She looks very good here. I don’t really see the issue with her eyebrows. They are thick and she likes them. Good for her.

  20. Franny says:

I think Julia looks great. I’m glad that she sticks to what she feels natural in instead of parading around uncomfortably in ball room dresses.

I think Lily looks very nice. The eyebrows are a bit distracting, I just want to tweeze a few hairs (not the thing, just a few hairs!). The dress also seems to large on her, but is cute overall.

  21. brin says:

Lily looks good. LOL at Sean’s hair!

  22. Shannon says:

The director looks awesome. Love his shoes and silky leggings.

No comment about anyone else 😛

  23. Lee says:

I like her eyebrows and while I respect that Kaiser hates them, I’m getting a little put off by the discussion. Not all women need to tow the line of beauty standards and it rubs me the wrong way to continually denounce the poor girl for her ‘improper grooming’ as if she looks unbathed and it’s 1950.

That being said, the dress is cute and appropriate for the movie and all, but I find it way too twee for her age. It would be better on Haylee Steinfeld or Chloe Moretz (even though the latter would undoubtedly never wear it since she seems convinced she’s in her mid-20s). But on a 23-yr-old girl it seems too childish.

    • D. says:

Apparently, all women must look the same. Because we are the Borg. She will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.

    • ol cranky says:

I have thicker and dark brows too and every time I go to get them shaped and cleaned up the person who does them insists on leaving them thicker & “natural” – this is at multiple salons over the years. The funny thing is, I get compliments from the girls who I go to and other people at the salon about having natural looking brows (as well as, more recently, two girls at a make up counter who overheard me saying I needed to make an appointment).

  24. Anna says:

I think Lily looks lovely. Love the dress. She seems like a sweet girl.

Julia is just pissing me off with that look. It doesn’t look bad, but come on! You’re one of the stars of the movie, it’s the world premiere, you’re Julia Roberts, don’t dress like you’re off to a business lunch! (I do think her face/makeup/hair look gorgeous here.)

  25. mia girl says:

I think she is a pretty girl, but I do not like any of this at all. Her dress, makeup and hair are distracting from her beauty, not showing it off.

  26. Loralei says:

Saw the previews. It looks like an irritatingly stupid movie. I don’t mind her eyebrows, but that dress is so stiff and “poofy”, Hate it. It’s Julia’s brows that are awful. They are so thin, they look like little lines painted on her face! Kind of like the movie stars of the twenties or thirties or something

    • Kara Ann says:

There seems to be alot of love for Lily’s brows here which heartens me. Who says that we can’t ignore what others (tweezed stars) tell/show us is acceptable and use our own judgement? Good for Lily that she does what SHE feels comfortable with.
I agree with you about Julia’s brows. IMO, the overtweezing can really age a person. Having said that, I do think Julia has aged very well even though I can’t stand her.

  27. Meanchick says:

Don’t see the fuss over this one at all. She’s Phil’s daughter, so now we’re being force-fed this blah piece of nothing special.

    • Jen34 says:

LOL I have to agree with you.

    • jojo says:

Yeah, I had no idea who she was but I can feel it in the air tonight that her talent is pse-pse pseudeo talent, and that we are in a land of confusion. Oh thnk twice, its just another day in paradise

  28. k says:

Sorry, what did you say? I was distracted by Julia’s over-tweezed browline.

  29. ldel says:

Lily is very pretty – her eyebrows are a non issue imo. Never thought Julia R was pretty….mouth is enourmous and face is kind of……skeletal??

  30. Eric says:

What is up with the Brezhnev eyebrows? I saw the movie and they are very distracting from her face, I could only watch the giant eyebrows, and her acting is terrible too, fell asleep half-way into move….

  31. Amy says:

    Hahah @ Sean Bean’s hair. 🙂

I think Julia looks pretty fantastic.

I think Lily Collins’ bangs are adorable. I respect her stance on her eyebrows, but she’s gotta know that she could look so much better if she just cleaned them up a little.

  32. anonymoose says:

    “hairy Lily Collins”? HOW RUDE.

That said, I think she looks radiant and lovely, hairdo and all! Gorgeous lipcolor, gorgeous hair, gorgeous skin.

I don’t care much for the pointy top of the dress, or the chafing at her underarms from the material.

Julia’s hair and makeup is fug. Her suit is oddly proportioned, or perhaps she is?

  33. Floridaseaturtle says:

Love the dress on her and LOVE her eyebrows. My 9 yr old daughter has eyebrows similar, but a little lighter in color and thickness. And I am so dreading the first friend to try and convince her to tweeze. A friend said I needed to in the 8th grade and they never grew back, ever. Thank gosh I didn’t tweeze them too small. I always wondered if it was the American Indian ethniciity in me that rendered them gone forever…who knows? Anyway, like a previous poster said, she has plenty of time. Why take a risk with something so sweet and dramatic, that God gave her that is naturally simple and unique?

  34. Granger says:

I’m with Kaiser’s dad! I’ve never thought Julia was going to age well. That being said, I was thinking more about how she’ll look at 60 than at 43/44 (?). For now, she still looks pretty good, and yes, I like that she wears what makes her comfortable, and YES, she has legs as long as my whole body, but… the suit just doesn’t say “movie premiere” to me. And if it was anyone else but Julia, I’d say “Oh, isn’t that sweet, she’s just trying to keep the focus on Lily.” But it’s Julia. That kind of selflessness just can’t be possible.

    • Floridaseaturtle says:

Lol! I agree, unfortunately, probably wasn’t entirely for Lilly. I got the vibe that she was going for “business-like”, which I don’t take her seriously for either. An understated, knee length, but pretty dress would have been nice, and appropriate.

  35. Original Chloe says:

Okay, love Ned Stark and all but.. look at his hair.
And we’re giving a hard time to a teenage girl because of her eyebrows?

  36. paper says:

this is totally a chick thing. why should she mess with her eyebrows when she’s already good looking?

  37. Camille (The original) says:

Her eyebrows look fine but I don’t care for her hair style. The dress is cute.

WTF is up with Julia’s wonk lips in that close up photo? Has she stopped with the filler or something?

  38. Trek Girl says:

It’s ok, don’t fret, Kaiser *pats head*, they won’t hurt you – *whispers* you are safe here.

Let the eyebrows go, Kaiser, just let them go – they will be there until they are not there, and there isn’t anything you can do about it.

I like her hair AND her eyebrows. It makes sense that she still has the eyebrows because she is at the premiere of the movie, and they are a distinctive feature of this incarnation of Snow White, after all. She’s just doing what any good actress would do. Hey, that’s why Julia Roberts looks so evil in these pictures – she’s staying partly in character for the premiere.

    It’s just good business sense.

  39. normades says:

She is 23, not 17. Why are we talking about age appropriateness??? She’s an adult and can wear whatever she wants.

  40. Zoey says:

She is so pretty and I like a thicker eyebrow but a unibrow is never okay!! As for Julia, she looks great.

  41. Insertrandomname says:

hey!!!! Don’t diss the Bean! He’s so freakin awesome!

  42. MB says:

the eyebrows are fine, I guess. I have a problem with the makeup. Her hair is brown, her eyes are hazel , her eyebrows are thick and dark brown, her eyemakeup is brown and black and then they giver her a dark red lip as well. It is too much and probably make the eyebrows seem thicker and hairier than they actually are. She needs something to lighten her face.

  43. misstrishm says:

I think she’s a very pretty girl. I want to see this movie it looks pretty cute.

  44. Reece says:

Hey! It is very windy, still, and was raining yesterday in LA so lay off Boromir! lol

It’s not THICK brows that is at issue it’s the fact that they are damn near UNIBROWed. It’s distracting. They/it looks ok here because her bangs are covering half of them/it.

She does look very pretty here.

  45. Sasha says:

She looks absolutely stunning. I like the brows. They work on her face. She is seriously beautiful.

  46. Cecila says:

U know I don’t like the last comment about Julia I think she looks great she not looking all botoxy or plastic when a women ages natural in Hollywood people say she doesn’t age well but when she nipped and tucked people say she should age natural u can win for losing but I alway thought still do that Julia was pretty. And lilly I have I think her eyebrows are fine to many people get the eyebrows done and end up with none so I think they both look amazing

  47. Cait says:

I think the brows work for her. She has sweet face and is young and the contrast suits her. So many women overtweeze and it can look harsh.

  48. sullivan says:

Lily is a beautiful young woman. Her eyebrows are gorgeous. I can take or leave what she’s wearing, but it doesn’t detract from her beauty. Why would she pluck her eyebrows? So she can look like everyone else?

  49. Rianna says:

She’s rockin’ a 90s Winona Ryder look that works for her. Very pretty girl whose youth is palpable.

  50. Cordelia says:

Julia Roberts is aging amazingly well… better than most women on this planet!

  51. lflips says:

How could you say Julia isn’t aging well? She’s 44 and she doesn’t look plastic. As for the eyebrows, I love them. More women should wear a full brow.

  52. T.C. says:

I have to disagree Kaiser. I think she looks very pretty: hair, bangs, and yes eyebrows. Love the dress too. Prefect look.

  53. AMY says:

Who cares about the women….Look at Sean Bean!!!! He is one sexy man… I can pretend he “just got out of my bed head”…lol 🙂

  54. Jenna says:

The thick brows are fine; she just needs to shape them a bit better. And she’s 23, not 12. I love my Dolce&Gabbana but this dress is too poofy and princess-like for my taste.

  55. Hm says:

LC looks lovely, and makes pale skin look fresh and luminous. Not crazy about the pointy neckline but looks great overall.

  56. Helen says:

You shouldn’t be “ashamed” for Sean Bean for being in the film. Believe it or not, it’s actually pretty kickass. Julia, Lily, Armie all do an amazing job.

Don’t judge something unless you know what you’re talking about – and I’m assuming you haven’t seen the film yet. But DO correct me if I’m wrong 🙂

  57. LBeees says:

Facially okay, but that dress is TERRIBLE! Ill-fitting, loose at the top and too poufy. Color is meh. She just needs a new stylist.

And Julia! My god. Her face is sinking!

  58. Neocleo says:

She’s a very pretty girl and there’s nothing wrong with the bangs or her eyeberows.

  59. entrpreneur says:

    Brilliant stuff, very well written!
