John Edwards was a client of high-end Manhattan prostitution ring in 2007

Three weeks ago, a five-year investigation culminated in the arrest of “The Millionaire Madam,” 44-year-old Anna Gristina, an Upper West Side soccer mom who ran a “million-dollar prostitution ring” out of her apartment. Gristina is currently in Rikers, having failed at every attempt to get bail – you can read more about what Gristina is accused of and her legal case here and here. Apparently, she was caught on tape “boasting” about her prostitution scheme. Also, some of her underage kids might have been employed by her in some capacity.

So now that the madam is in jail, some of her girls are speaking. One of the call girls has allegedly told investigators that John Edwards was one of her clients. Because… why not? Let’s just drown in sleaze.

A call girl working for alleged “Millionaire Madam” Anna Gristina told investigators she was paid to have sex with former U.S. Sen. John Edwards when he was in New York raising money for his failed presidential bid, DNAinfo has learned. Edwards is the first big name to surface in connection to Gristina’s alleged prostitution scheme run out of an Upper East Side apartment. His lawyers were contacted by DNAinfo, but did not comment.

According to “On The Inside” sources, Edwards allegedly hooked up with one of Gristina’s high-end hookers in 2007 when the dashing pol from North Carolina brought his then high-flying presidential campaign to the Big Apple. The one-night fling allegedly took place at an Upper East Side hotel suite and was arranged by an aide with help from a New Yorker familiar with Gristina’s prostitution ring, sources said.

The prostitute claiming to have slept with Edwards provided a detailed, first-hand account of their encounter to investigators in the Manhattan District Attorney’s office in 2008 after they began probing Gristina’s operation, sources said.

“Most of the women don’t have any idea about the identities of the men they sleep with,” a source explained. “How would they know a money man from Wall Street or the face of a lawyer or banker who shows up? But the face of the national politician?” the source rhetorically asked. “She knew.”

Investigators found the woman credible, but never notified federal authorities, seeing no reason to involve the feds in a low-level local infraction, sources told DNAinfo. At the time, investigators were shocked at the allegation because Edwards was then considered the All-American persona. “On The Inside” sources said investigators were able to substantiate that Edwards was in New York on a fund-raising tour at the time of the alleged encounter.

Records show the Edwards campaign spent thousands of dollars for near-monthly stays at the Loews Hotels Regency at 540 Park Ave. on the Upper East Side in 2007, along with stays at several other Manhattan hotels including a Comfort Inn on West 39th Street. The Loews Hotels Regency is also where he reportedly met videographer Rielle Hunter, who bore Edwards a love child while his wife, Elizabeth, battled cancer.

No charges, however, were ever brought against Edwards because pay-for-play sex is difficult to prove.

Gristina’s reputed “black book” client list allegedly contains powerful, wealthy, politically-connected and influential players, according to sources familiar with her estimated $15 million New York prostitution empire.

Sources told DNAinfo that the “Millionaire Madam’s” list of patrons shelling out thousands of dollars for weekend getaways includes: a Middle Eastern sheik, an international billionaire financier, a nightclub impresario, dozens of Wall Street hedge fund and investment bankers, and a network of lawyers — all of which are burning up phone lines trying to find out if their names could surface.

[From DNA Info]

Sure, it’s not like Edwards is currently in office or anything, but it’s interesting to look at the timeline, isn’t it? And the hooker actually went to the investigators and told them that Edwards was paying for sex – back in 2007! WHILE HE WAS RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT. Sleazy, sleazy, sleazy. And this would have been the same time-frame as Rielle Hunter’s pregnancy too. Ugh. I hope “Johnny” does end up going to jail for the federal charges he’s fighting – and I hope Rielle doesn’t end up knocked up again.

    Shocker.

    *eye roll*

  3. TheOriginalVictoria says:

Are we surprised? Really? Not at all. He’s a politicians who spent $400 dollars on a friggin haircut. He was most likely cheating on Elizabeth even before Rielle with a bunch of other hookers as well.

What gets my goat is that he did all of this while his wife was sick. Him, Newt, and Bob are so classy.

    • Sapphire says:

What is it with these politics-of every party? Running for office means you can’t keep it in your pants?

      • tmbg says:

I don’t like politicians, period. They all give off a sleazy vibe. You don’t get into that kind of position without wheeling and dealing, lying and manipulating, IMO.

      • MorticiansDoItDeader says:

Politicians are typically narcissists. I speak from experience. My father was a career politician and philanderer.

  4. brin says:

Yuck. Wonder if he and Spitzer were there at the same time (client 8 & 9).

  5. BKiddo says:

There was a time when sex scandals and policiticans were actually shocking. Not so much now.

Does Edwards have custody of the young kids he had with Elizabeth? Or are they in the care of others?

    • Sophie says:

I’m not 100% sure, but I think the young children are being raised by their older sibling? Per Elizabeth’s will? don’t quote me on that though.

    • fabgrrl says:

Why would he not have custody of his own children?

    • Anne says:

He has custody. If he does end up serving time for the illegal issues with the money, then Cate will have custody. I don’t think Elizabeth attempted to take custody away from him. And I’m fairly certain that she would not have been able to do so in her will. As far as I know, her will left her money to the children and John was cut out. And that should both she and die while the younger children are minors, that custody should got to Cate.

  6. ahoyhoy says:

John Edwards ran as a Populist, which I am, and ran on his understanding of blue-collar America. I should have loved him back in 2004 Primary season, but SOMETHING about John always CREEPED me out.
When he was shown to be a cheating-on-a-sick-wife JERK, I was SO happy I trusted my instincts that he was phony.

  7. mel says:

I use to really like him..now he is just a huge sleaze.

  8. ladybert62 says:

and to think I wanted him for president!! johnny how low you have sunk in my opinion, slimeball.

  9. Dragonlady sakura says:

All I can say is, a man must be pretty desperate and pathetic to pay a woman for sex. I know plenty of women who sleep with anything for free!

  10. aenflex says:

I don’t see what’s wrong with anyone, no matter social/civil standing, paying for consensual sex. People get to uptight about that shit. Who cares, really? If you’ve ever had a drunken hookup and regretted it the next day, than you’re worse off than this prostitute, who at least got PAID. It’s wrong to cheat on your spouse, and that’s about all he’s guilty of. A sexually satisfied person may be better poised to manage.

    • L says:

I dislike this argument “it’s not hurting anyone!” If that were really true, more little girls would be saying I want to be a hooker when I grow up.

Most prostitutes (including the high end girls) have issues with drugs, abuse, and a whole other litany of things. I’m willing to bet 99% of them fell into it because of one horrible decision or another. Not being uptight about sex between willing partners is one thing. Men/women BUYING women/men for a night is another.

    • Anne says:

There are so many things wrong with this.

First in an ideal society, you would be correct. There would be nothing wrong with clients paying paying a sex worker for services. Everything would be safe on both ends, and people would legally work within the set system.

However we do not live in that world. Even countries that have legal prostitution also have to deal with illegal operations flourishing.

Not to mention that to compare someone who has a one night stand or what ever to sex work, is sex shaming. And it doesn’t make sense. Two people choosing to have sex even if one or both regret it the next day, is not even remotely the same as prostitution.

Also prostitution, can easily hurt people, even if they are not directly involved in it. I don’t don’t see too many people choosing to live next to or have their business next to a brothel. It could easily destroy their property values, make the area less safe, and bring in a ton of other problems.

    • Rux says:

So basically what you are saying is that it’s the wife’s fault that he had to go elsewhere. Shame forbid wife got cancer.

      • aenflex says:

        To all:
Actually, I didn’t say a thing about his wife. She’s the innocent party here, in every way. I was speaking in general terms relating to sexual satisfaction and its influence on human emotional well-being. And someone who is emotionally sound makes better management decisions, in my experience.

And personally, I don’t give a poo what my president/senator/governor/state rep. does in his/her private sexual life, so long as I agree with their political principles and directives.

And lastly, the illegality and non-regulation of prostitution are direct contributing fators to the epidemiology of unpleasantries, i.e. addiction, abuse, sex trafficking that are associated with it.
Americans are so uptight and so provincial about sex. It’s sad, because Americans are quite progressive in many other aspects of society.

    • Marie Antoinette Jr. says:

It’s wrong for a politician to pay for sex because it’s ILLEGAL, and our elected leaders are expected to uphold our laws. He should have visited Amsterdam or the Bunny Ranch if he wanted to get his rocks off with a ho.

  11. Agnes says:

good god, he’s sleazy. so sad that we look at this now and think “ugh, typical politician.”

  12. HoustonGrl says:

Like everyone I’m not surprised. He fits the prototype (egomaniac, power-hungry, greedy, etc…). But let’s not pretend any of these other politicians are any different. They just haven’t been caught.

    • Jayna says:

Exactly. He is not the exception by any stretch of the imagination I’n Washington.

      • the original bellaluna says:

A truly sad state of affairs, our political candidates.

This guy cheats on his dying wife; has a kid with his mistress; and then has an aide take the blame.

Then we have Newt, who consistently cheats on his dying wives and marries the mistresses.

I just want to punch a politico right now!

    • Azurea says:

Agreed. My boyfriend in college became a now high-profile politician. We kept in touch on and off over the years as friends. Once, when he was between political gigs, he came to my city on business. We got together for dinner at his hotel. We talked about our kids, spouses, parents, & siblings, mostly. We went up to his room to chat for awhile, & he immediately tried to “start something.” Honestly, I was shocked. He is known & portrayed as a devoted husband & father, who actually schedules dates with his wife, to this day. For all his power-hungry, egomaniacal ways (which he displayed back when I met him at 19)he was always loyal & devoted & very family-aware. This type of behaviour was the last I would have expected of him. I brushed him off, like he was a puppy, and he didn’t mind. He tried again a little while later, & again, I brushed him off.
What is even more shocking to me is that his wife was about to give birth to their third child. If he tried it with me, I’m sure he’s tried it with others.
And, as his political star has risen since then, I’m sure he thinks he’ll never get caught! We shall see….;)

  13. jen says:

But wait he was Father of the Year!

  14. Bella says:

    Surprise!!

  15. Kaboom says:

I’m always struck by the irony. Paying for sex in the form of prostitution is illegal. Paying for not getting sex in the form of alimony is generally accepted.

  16. Alyce says:

Why exactly does one run for President when one has a closet FULL of skeletons? Didn’t he know it would all get drug out into the open? Idiot!

    • HoustonGrl says:

I think these men subconsciously want to get caught.

    • Marie Antoinette Jr. says:

Because they think they are infallible and smarter than everyone—so THEY of course, will avoid getting caught. Most of them have gotten away with it dozens and hundreds of times, so they have a false sense of security.
i.e. Very few burglars get caught their first time breaking in someone’s house. That’s why they keep doing it.

  17. Twez says:

He might be President now if he had just stuck with the hookers.

  18. rogue says:

Politicians never cease to amaze me .He is a first class sleaze!

  19. Newtsgal says:

I live in NC and I can tell you that this doesn’t even start to scratch the surface of the sleezyness that is John Edwards….so this comes as no surprise

  20. MST says:

I guess I’m a prude, but I beg to differ. I think that Eliot Spitzer’s wife and daughters would too. And legalized prostitution doesn’t end organized crime or trafficking of underage girls, either. In Israel and Netherlands, where prostitution is legal, it STILL is a problem. In the Netherlands, so-called “lover boys” (pimps) prey on young girls, forcing them into prostitution.

Tell me, if there is nothing wrong with prostitution, would you 1) want your daughter, aunt, mother, etc., or some other woman you care about to be a prostitute, and 2) would you want a brothel in your neighborhood?

  21. Rux says:

This did not even get a blip on my “surprise” scale. What I am surprised about is that it took this long for it to come out. If we look closely he is probably a client at that other madam’s club. What’s his face, Spitter or some crap like that?

  22. Turd Fergussen says:

The way he treated his late wife Elizabeth was unconscionable. He is a piece of trash.

    • Ravensdaughter says:

Agreed! She was an amazing and very courageous woman-who was dying. No excuses for John-a complete bottom feeder…

  23. jc126 says:

I wouldn’t be surprised. I never believed the story that he and Rielle had a spontaneous one-night stand that resulted in a pregnancy. No way.

  24. Gossip PHD says:

In a not shocking turn of events, Edwards has one of his legal mouthpieces denying it.
One of Edwards’ attorneys issued a strongly worded statement denying the allegation.

“Mr. Edwards categorically denies that he was involved with any prostitute or service,” said Allison Van Laningham.

LIKE ANYONE WOULD BELIEVE THIS WORLD CLASS LIAR – HE LIED TO THE WORLD ABOUT RIELLE, THE BABY, THE PREGNANCY AND EVERYTHING ELSE.

Remember folks, this was a guy busy “renewing his vows” with his stage 4 cancer-stricken wife, while he had a knocked up groupie girlfriend in the wings.
    Sheesh.

    • Marie Antoinette Jr. says:

The only people who believe him are his beleaguered children and that dumb whore Rielle.

  25. Gne Parmesan says:

Personally i think the madam should release her arsenal of powerful men i’m still disappointed Heidi Fleiss never released the names of other H-wood actors..i mean Charlie Sheen is sort of a duh

    • gab says:

I agree Gne. I can’t help but notice the Woman is in the slammer but none of the all powerful male clients are. I co sign on the comments about sleazy politicians too. I’m just so discouraged about where we as a country are headed.

  26. stinky says:

    “videographer” my ASS.

  27. Kosmos says:

Another disappointment. I’m always glad when they get caught, however. I’m sure many of them get away with it and their wives never know. That’s so unfair, what scumbags.

  28. Sophie says:

Yuck. This guy is such a creep. How can his children even stand to be in his presence after what he did to their mother?
