Claire Danes covers ASOS: “I’m a sales slut. I’m just very seduced by a sale.”

I had never been a huge Claire Danes fan-girl. I liked her okay for years, and then the Billy Crudup stuff went down (Crudup dumped pregnant Mary Louise Parker for Danes), and then there were some years where Claire’s career kind of suffered and I didn’t care, and then she did HBO’s Temple Grandin. And that completely changed the way I thought about Claire. Before that TV movie, I never realized that Claire was simply that GOOD of an actress. She was really, really wonderful in that role. And then after that, Claire joined up with Damian Lewis for Homeland, which was one of the best new shows of 2011. Even Pres. Obama name-checked Homeland as his favorite show – it’s about terrorism and patriotism and real-world espionage, but it’s also a really wonderful character study, and Claire is really, really good in it. As is Damian Lewis. And Mandy Patinkin, who is basically the coolest mofo ever.

Basically, I’m saying that nowadays, I’m kind of in love with Claire. And I love this new ASOS photo shoot, and I love the interview excerpts:

On her latest obsession: The Only Way is Essex – “Damn, I love that show…(TOWIE) is just so good. We don’t have anything that rivals it. I don’t even care if it’s real or not, it’s thoroughly entertaining.”

On her decision to join Homeland: “It was a leap of faith for all of us. We only had the faintest sense of where the writers were going to take the story, and I think they were discovering it themselves as they went along, which is one of the reasons television can be so exciting. But it’s always just such a relief when a story that you care about and a character that you’ve worked so terribly hard to create manages to translate.”

On My So-Called Life: “I was 13 when I did the pilot and I was inexperienced. I knew that the show was special though – it was so fresh, even kind of revolutionary. Devon Gummersall (Brian Krakow) and Devon Odessa (Sharon Cherski) are dear friends of mine. If I’m in LA, I still have Thanksgiving with Bess Armstrong who played my mother. We’re all really, very close. Those gigs don’t happen very often.”

On Romeo + Juliet: “That was a lot of fun. If you’re going to be an ingénue, that’s the one to be – the ultimate. I saw Leo (DiCaprio – Romeo) the other day and in some ways, our dynamic is absolutely the same, but then it’s like, ‘Oh, but wait, we’re big fat grown-ups!’”

On her home away from NYC with husband Hugh Dancy: “The country house is beautiful (a couple hours upstate) – there is nobody around except cows, so no judgments. I can look like absolute hell, and not worry about it…I was terrified when we moved in that it would be haunted. It’s not. Well, if it is, it’s haunted by very happy people.”

On fashion: “I’m a sales slut. I’m just very seduced by a sale. In New York buying clothes is fun, because it really is boutiquey. I like Legacy and Opening Ceremony, and I love Prada. I have a lot of J Brand and Citizens of Humanity jeans. It’s funny with jeans now, because if they don’t feel like a pair of sweatpants, I don’t have patience for them anymore! I think I’m becoming increasingly lazy.”

I like the “sales slut” stuff. Claire’s personality seems so girly, and you can tell that she really loves the trappings of celebrity, the hair and makeup people, the clothes and costumes, the free stuff. But she’s also a hell of an actress too, so I don’t begrudge her anything. She deserves it! I can’t wait to see what they do with her character in Season 2 of Homeland. SPOILERS: How will she ever be let back into the CIA? Patinkin is on her side, still, but I have my doubts as to what strings he can pull at the agency. How f–king cool was the scene where Patinkin puts all of Claire’s color-coded material on the wall, when he finally understands what she was trying to tell him? God, this show is amazing.

I’ve always loved her, ever since My So Called Life. She’s smart and lovely.

I loved My So Called Life, but in the last couple of years she just seemed too skinny and serious. Don’t know. But I like the photo shoot!

    • marie says:

same here. I’ve watched everything she’s done, except Homeland-and that was just because I didn’t have the channel. that problem is, thankfully, solved..

    Has she had small implants?

Looks like Kate Winslet isn’t the only one pointing out Leo’s weight gain…

  6. Slim Charles says:

Mandy Patinkin? The guy who can’t help but overact? The guy who makes any show he’s in unwatchable? We cannot be talking about the same actor.

LOL, true I secretly hated him on Criminal Minds and was not sad to see him go. On Homeland he is a bit more subdued and overall as apart of the cast he is quite good.

I am Don Diego Montoya . . . Prepare to die!!!

I loved him in Dead Like Me (two finger salute to Showtime for cancelling that. Yes, I’m still angry).

Everything you said! Loved My So Called Life discovered it in college on Netflix as I was too young and wasn’t living in this country when it originally came out. I was really disappointed with how the Billy Cudrup thing went down, but they all seemed to have moved on so why shouldn’t I? Lol. I ended up watching the entire season of Homeland on showtime on Christmas Day! And fell in love. As a former DC girl/poly-sci major who loves all things politics it spoke to me in a way that no other show on does. LOVED IT. Cannot wait for the new season! I think I’ll end up watching it all at once again instead of week to week because the suspense of not knowing all at once is much too much to bear! Such an interesting, realistic well acted/written show.

  8. shaboo says:

i love that she watches TOWIE, its so silly.

  9. Dani says:

She has definitely aged beautifully so far.

  10. HappyMom says:

Homeland is great. I love everything with Damian Lewis. And while I found her annoying before-I am blown away by her on this show. She is an amazing actress.

  11. mia girl says:

I’ve always thought she was a great actress.

I love her and I love her husband. If you’ve never seen the movie where the met, “Evening” , Netflix it. It is a beautiful, sad move with a lot of great actors including Vanessa Redgrave, Toni Collete, Natasha Richardson, Meryl Streep, Glenn Close and Patrick Wilson. I cry my eyes out every time I watch it.

  12. Laura says:

Noooooo you can’t like anyone who likes TOWIE!!! It’s just awful!!

  13. Nina says:

Homeland is one of the best show on tv right now. Claire Danes deserves an Emmy, she’s an awesome actress !

  14. I Choose Me says:

Love her as an actress and when is Homeland going to be back on already? I need my Damien Lewis fix. Also, must check out the Temple Grandin episodes of which you so highly speak.

  15. koko says:

I met her in person once about 15 years ago. She was on tour with her boyfriend Ben Lee. She got out a car they were touring from bar to bar in and she was so so beautiful in person. Like she just had a glow.

  16. storyteller says:

Claire Danes is a fabulous actress. Always has been actually. She kind of lost her way a bit in the noughties but she seems to be getting better with age now. And I know everyone bangs on about Leo and Kate but for me, Leo/Claire has always been the more intriguing dynamic. It’s interesting that she says it’s almost the same now, because back then, they’ve as much as admitted they were seriously hot for each other. She’s probably too smart for him though. Boo.

  17. Jem says:

I hope Claire Danes doesn’t think we’re all like that in Essex! Its really mainly beautiful countryside and pretty villages. I had to whizz past the homeland spoilers- we’re only on about ep 6 over here!!
