Gotye disrespects the ‘Glee’ cover of his song, then half-heartedly takes it back

By now, I’m sure everyone has heard Gotye’s chart-topping single “Somebody That I Used To Know”. It’s a good song. It’s super-catchy, and I had it stuck in my head for about a month last year. Gotye’s single is slow-burning – he released it last summer, and it just topped the charts this month. The song got two big pushes – one, Gotye (real name: Wally de Backer, no joke) appeared on Saturday Night Live to perform two songs and appear in a Digital Short, which was pretty funny. First, here’s the video for “Somebody That I Used To Know”:

And here’s the SNL digital short:

Funny. Cute. It helps that Gotye is kind of indie and hippie and cute too. He’s not trying too hard, and he’s not all Lana del Rey “LOOK AT ME!”. Anyway, the second big Gotye moment was when the song was featured on Glee several weeks ago. Darren Criss and Matt Bomer (who play brothers on the show) sang Gotye and Kimbra’s parts in an awkward duet (it’s a screw-you break up song, being sung by brothers?). Here’s the video:

I’m not disputing the fact that both Criss and Bomer have lovely voices. Bomer especially – I’ve heard him sing without all of the filters and junk, and he really does have a strong, powerful, operatic singing voice. But… that sounded funky. So what did Gotye think of Glee’s version? Not much. In an interview a few days ago, Gotye said, “They did such a faithful arrangement of the instrumentals but the vocals were that pop Glee style, ultra-dry, sounded pretty tuned and the rock has no real sense… like it’s playing to you from a cardboard box. It made it sound dinky and wrong.” I think that’s a fair complaint, truly. I’m not saying that just because I hate Glee. Bomer and Criss’s vocals sounded over-processed.

Anyway, Gotye experienced something of a backlash from the Gleeks, and so he tried to take back part of his comments. Sort of. He was really half-assed about it, though, which means he probably should have just stood by his original statement. Gotye said on Monday, “The nature of using reverb and space in a recording can change your perception of how a sound appeals to you… this xylophone hook in my song — it’s kind of dinky not just in the cover version but the original song… [mockingly] that becomes the Glee cover I hated and Darren Criss is an a–hole.” Gotye also said, “I thought it was really clever to transpose the song to two guys … It was a great idea.” I guess he’s saying that he was “dinky” first in his use of the xylophone, and then he’s just talking around the whole “their vocals sounded like crap” issue with a lot of fancy music-talk. Just own it, Gotye. The cover was kind of crappy. It’s okay to say it.

Fair enough…..I wouldn’t want my song butchered on Glee either.

  2. MrsBarneyStinson says:

I didn’t even listen to Glee’s version properly. I was too distracted by Matt Bomer and Darren Criss. *Sigh*

    • Maguita says:

I’m sorry, I’m having a tee-hee immature moment… Did Darren Criss just sing to hot Bomer “when you screwed me over” and gave him his sexy back?

Yeah, that is definitely a kind of San Francisco brotherly love song, but not the blood brothers kind at all.

Although Darren Criss’s voice is quite good, this whole thing gives me a creepy feeling of that little Napoleonic Ryan Murphy playing out some kind of personal fantasy.

  3. WaywardGirl says:

Some of those Gleeks are insane. Gotye is so right.

  4. Samigirl says:

I am a *huge* Matt Bomer fan, but even I was like…this….isn’t the best song Glee has done. So what, he didn’t like it? He’s entitled to his opinion. And, lots of people agree with him on it.

s/n, totally didn’t realize how cute Goyte is. I love the nerdy look 🙂

  5. marie says:

I agree with him, I am not a fan of Glee-at all, I tried but I just can’t watch it. He should have stood by his original statement though, Gleeks can get over it..

  6. Eve says:

Very proud of our Belgian boy!!!

    • My2Cents says:

He is Australian. His real name is Wally. True story!

      • Gene Parmesan says:

        He is Belgian born though

      • Eve says:

        He is Belgian as well.

      • Maguita says:

If he’s Belgium as well, it certainly explains why he went with a French surname that is usually spelled “Gauthier”.

      • JR says:

He is Belgian born and moved to Australia when he was two. His real name is Wouter De Backer (but I suppose Wally is easier in Australia). Wouter is a Dutch/Flemish name, the French counterpart of which is Gauthier, hence Gotye…

    • Camille (The original) says:

And the girl who duets with him- Kimbra, is a New Zealander, and we are very proud of her too :).

  7. lucy2 says:

Are there that many Gleeks left? I didn’t think that show hung onto that many fans.

Cue Ryan Murphy’s bitching whining about Gotye in 3…2…1…

  8. Gia says:

Glee is shiny and generic..So what was he expecting? I agree with him though but I am assuming he gave them permission to use the song, no?

    • Dorothy#1 says:

I was just going to say that! That is what glee does.

But I like both versions and now I want to get Gotye’s album so it is a win for him in my opinion!!

    • Minty says:

It’s also possible that Gotye’s record label owns the rights to the song and gave Glee permission without ever running it by him first.

I don’t blame musicians for not wanting their songs to be butchered on Glee. They don’t want an overprocessed karaoke version. Synthesized studio-enhanced vocals and a teen version of Kidz Bop is what they can expect to happen. Thank goodness Kings Of Leon stuck to their guns when Ryan Murphy threw his hissy fit. Glee is now more about selling their cover versions on iTunes than telling a good story with believable characters.

The show went downhill fast after the first season. Ryan Murphy is known to be very inconsistent with the writing and the quality of his shows always gets worse the longer they are on the air (ex: Nip/Tuck, American Horror Story).

The kind of fanaticism that turns Gleeks into an angry mob is the same kind you see in some Twilight stans. They get into hysterics defending crap that they believe is great art, but they are surprised people question their judgment and taste. Seriously? The majority of their fans are teenagers, after all.

      • Allison says:

Minty – yes, the record label would (probably) own the rights to the master recording, but Glee would still need permission on the publishing side as well. Gotye wrote the song, so Glee’s request would have been run by him either one of those two ways (or both, really). It’s usually the case that the artist is made aware of these requests. Sorry, I have a lot of friends in music!

      • Minty says:

        @Allison:

Thank you for the clarification. If that’s the case, then Gotye shouldn’t be surprised Glee would do that to his song. They made ersatz versions of almost every song they have covered. He shouldn’t have complained if he gave permission. Furthermore, since he did complain publicly, it’s foolish to later vacillate with his opinion. Gotye, stand by what you said and own it, instead of looking like an indecisive wuss.

      • queen says:

Since the Gotye original recording wasn’t being used (which is what his record label own the rights to), it would have gone to Gotye/his management for the publishing (songwriter) side only. This means they approved the use of the music/lyrics, but they dont really have any say on how that version that is sung/arranged unless they had conditions about that on the approval (sorry, I work in music licensing!)

  9. Harper says:

I confess to being a die-hard Gleek, and even I agree with him. I’m surprised Gotye encountered a lot of backlash, actually. I spend way more time than I should on various Glee message boards, and the general consensus among Gleeks seemed to be that this song was way over-processed.

  10. Abby says:

I have to admit Gotye sounded a lot better. But I have to be honest. Before Glee covered this song I had never heard it. Now I know what the heck this Gotye is that everyone is talking about. Just like I’d never heard of Fun before Glee covered We Are Young. Apparently I suck at cool music, but I have to thank Glee for introducing me to some new songs by talented artists thanks to the show’s covers.

    • Eyeroll says:

Well, it only had over 100 million views on Youtube and won lots of awards at international music shows before Glee did its version…Gotye is sooo lucky Glee picked it up to give it more “mass appeal”

  11. GoodCapon says:

I only watched this Glee episode for Matt Bomer.

I have no problem with this song (even though I don’t know why they chose a break-up song in the first place) but the scene where Matt and his brother first started singing together? Cringeworthy to the max. The lipsync was blatantly obvious.

  12. Blah says:

Gotye totally sounds like Sting. When I first heard him I thought it was the British singer’s new song.

  13. MollyB says:

This kind of attitude irritates me. So, he’ll let them use his song (and take their money) but then criticize a TV show like Glee for not making his over-played and overrated song “rock” enough. I’m no fan of Glee (never seen it) but this guy takes himself too seriously.

  14. nikzilla37 says:

What a pussy. He should have just stood by his original statement.

  15. layla says:

Goyte has been well known for years in Australia. He’s an AMAZING musician and multi-instrumentalist and has every right to have an opinion about a cover of one of his songs. He writes and arranges all of his own music… So he’s not just talking out of his a**.

I strongly recommend you check out his other stuff… his last album was also amazing.

  16. layla says:

And Yes! – Wally is HOT!!!

  17. Alexis says:

    Glee ruins everything.

  18. Gene Parmesan says:

LOL i wouldn’t have thought from hsi sweet song that he could have an asshole or outspoken vibe to him..Nicely done Gotye. Though Matt Bomer shines in everything.

  19. Zelda says:

For me, the only “Somebody That I Used to Know” belongs to Elliot Smith.

    Always.

    • phoenixthecat says:

Truth. When Gotye’s song first came out I was so ticked off – thinking that it was a cover. Since then, I really do like Gotye’s song, but the true emotional impact and association of the phrase “someone I used to know” belongs to Elliott.

  20. isabelle says:

    Love that song.

  21. Violet says:

    What a jerk.

It’s not like the show did a cover of the song without Gotye’s permission. If he was that concerned about preserving the integrity of his work, he should’ve said no.

Furthermore, the cover wasn’t weird or disrespectful, so Gotye should just suck it up and quietly collect the resulting royalties.

  22. Amanda G says:

What?!? Glee did a crappy cover song?!? Shocking!! Ok, I tried to watch season one of that show but the songs were awful! And I’m probably the only one who thinks Lea doesn’t have that great of a voice…

However…Goyte gave them permission to use his song. What did he expect? And he should probably be greatful since it did give him a wider audience (of who I don’t know.)

  23. Jover says:

Excellent post Minty; but Glee despite a 25 per cent drop in ratings was renewed for a fourth season – how does that work? Was a fan first 10-12 eps. then it went downhill – has any tv show blown up quicker than Glee – honestly, none of the actors/actresses will have much of a music career because they have no large fan base and the glee association will taint them; wouldn’t be surprised to see them taking the biebster and Katy perry’s place in proactive skin ads at 2 am.

  24. california angel says:

He killed it covering Whitney last night!

  25. Snow says:

Did I miss something? Why is Gotye calling Darren Criss an “a–hole”? What’s his problem?

    • Harper says:

Gotye’s not calling Darren Criss an a-hole. He’s saying that Criss’ fans are acting as though he personally insulted the guy instead of just criticizing the cover.

  26. Kim says:

They did a great job with the song i think. Whether you like the show or not these 2 guys have great voices. I like Goyte and this song but I have to say his voice on SNL wasnt anywhere near as good as the Glee boys voices.

  27. Allons - y Allonso says:

Good for Goyte! I think what he originally said is very fair.

One of the radio stations in Australia ran a facebook pole to see how people liked the Glee cover. We didn’t. I had the best time reading some of the comments. (thank JJJ).

This is his music (and his 3rd album) and he’s finally really making an impact in the states!
I can understand why he kind of half-heartedly took it back.

  28. Mary says:

it was sorta wierd that they did a love song between “brothers” although i kind of like they’re version better. It’s just my opinion, i just liked it because it was more upbeat.
