Carey Mulligan in fish-scaled Prada at the Met Gala: tacky or adorable?

Carey Mulligan walked her first red carpet as a married lady last night at the Met Gala. Carey married Marcus Mumford just a few weeks ago in England – and many hoped that the Met Gala carpet would be their debut as a red-carpet couple. Unfortunately, I didn’t spy any photos of Marcus. I think Carey went solo to the event. Everyone said she was wearing her wedding ring, but I think Carey was trying to make a point out of not “flashing” the ring, because it’s really difficult to get a good angle on it in most of these photos.

Thankfully, she wasn’t just some fashion girl looking for some attention – Carey was the co-chair of the event, and as such, she probably got her pick of the Prada frocks going around. And this is what she chose. Fab Sugar says that Carey chose the design from a sketch, and Miuccia Prada had it delivered to Carey yesterday, just hours before the event.

I keep seeing the dress being described as “gold” but it’s really ombre, right? That’s not just the lighting? The top part is gold, the bottom part is silver-grey. Thoughts on the metallic fish-scales? I almost always hate that kind of fish-scale plating, and I’m not crazy about it on this dress. In fact, my overwhelming affection for Carey might be affecting my opinion on this dress. Maybe it looked better in person? That might be it – because I don’t think it’s photographing that well. And that stiff, A-line skirt is just rough. I kind of love her big hair, though. But again, I love this girl. It’s affecting how I see this whole look.

Wow…that is awful! Love her as an actress but boy that dress is just bad.

  4. Dee Cee says:

She looks happy, a classy woman, completely living in the modern age.. Her hair is lovely and what Cammy should have shot for..

  5. arock says:

i like her, but this was not it. kudos for trying something different.

–she looks like the advert for Svedka vodka thats been on rotation– (dancin’dancin’dancin machine…)

  6. Bubulle says:

Carey is a cute girl but wow everything is wrong here the hair, make up and that fugly dress.

  7. TheOriginalKitten says:

I think she looks awesome but I love her so maybe I’m just being biased. I think the dress is pretty incredible, I just wish it wasn’t two-toned. I think she had fun and wore something unique instead of a boring prom gown.

  8. Gia says:

    Love love love!

  9. Bite me aka aniston says:

  10. AudreyS says:

I think that dress is fine, but I can’t stand her mis-shapen mouth. Can she smile instead of smirking??

  11. Jordan says:

It was brave to try something daring but I don’t think she pulled it off. I’m not sure who could pull this off…maybe Darryl Hannah at a screening of Splash 2?

I think she looks gorgeous. The dress is fun, age and event appropriate. She looks breathlessly, effortlessly fresh. She reminds me of a spring morning after the rain, when everything is wet, shiny and clean, fresh and fragrant.
I think for her for this occassion it was perfection.

  12. Chatcat says:

She borrowed it from the set of Game of Thrones? Or Lana wore the English chain mail and she is wearing the Scottish version?

  13. marie says:

love the girl, hate the dress. maybe if it was just one color? even then it would be borderline I think.

  14. Princess Lizabeth says:

Odd dress, but she is just so cute that I don’t mind.

  15. Em says:

There are pictures on the Daily Mail website of the couple together

  16. Joni says:

I actually love the dress. But I think it takes a different kind of person to pull it off. Carey comes across as far too…cute or sweet or something for such a dress. Also, I think the shoes are all kinds of wrong, they really do not go with the dress. Neither does the hair.

  17. Cait says:

Ugh, this chick is so busted. Good thing she can act cause that’s a face for radio.

  18. another nina says:

I think she looks fine. And I reserve my hatred for Eva Mendez – that one was horrrrrible yesterday.

  19. Peach Dancer says:

    Big fan of Carey!
The dress is quite interesting but prob terribly uncomfortable, maybe that’s why she looks a bit stressed.

  20. pennyfeather says:

I absolutely LOVE everything here! She looks great. Matte makeup, metallic dress, and awesome hair!!!!!!!!!

  21. Alexis says:

It’s a strange dress, but I think she pulls it off.

  22. Sofie says:

I really like her dress and hair but they don’t seem to work together. The dress is really different and I think it flatters her. It’s not everyone’s gown but doesn’t look fantastically try-hard either.

Pretty girl but I think she should smile.

  23. Maritza says:

That dress would look gorgeous on Jlo but for Carey Mulligan it just doesn’t go with her personality, it clashes.

  24. Jenna says:

Fugly. She looks like a metal fish. Maybe if the skirt of the dress didn’t flare out as much it would have been better.

  25. Valerie says:

When I saw the top part, I assumed it was floor legnth and immediately hated it. But when I scrolled down and saw it was kneee legnth… I don’t know. Maybe it’s the relief of it being less hideous than I imagined, but I quite like it! I think maybe it’s Carey: she’s so cute that the dress is coming off better in my eyes.

  26. DavidBowie says:

I’m not feeling the dress and I am certainly NOT feeling those fug shoes. STILL I love this girl!

  27. original kate says:

the thing that bugs me about this dress is the way the sequins at the top reflect off her jaw in little dots; it makes it look as if she has some kind of pox.

    it’s really distracting me.

  28. bns says:

I’m all for the strange and unusual, but she’s just so damn boring. On someone else maybe I’d have an opinion, but on her I’m just meh.

  29. Psyren says:

Hideous. And it looks so stiff and uncomfortable.

  30. I Choose Me says:

I love her. Love the dress. She needed makeup that would pop a little bit more though.

  31. Marianne says:

I actually really dig this look.

  32. Mare says:

    I love it.

  33. Lisa B. says:

The girl is gorgeous, but the dress is awful. She probably had to wear it, though.

  34. Humanus Genus says:

Absolute favourite dress of the event! It’s a giant mirror!
