Benedict Cumberbatch on ‘sexy’ label: “It’s so silly that it just makes me laugh”

I’m sorry I didn’t get around to posting these photos yesterday, but it was a holiday and in my defense, I wasn’t really searching for them. I glanced through some of these BAFTA photos, but only the ones of the winners. Over the weekend, the BAFTAs handed out their television awards – it’s sort of like the Emmys/Golden Globes for American television.

Surprisingly, Sherlock (the modernized BBC version starring Benedict Cumberbatch) did not win big. Cumby was shut down by Dominic West for Best Actor… which surprised me at first – because I thought West won for The Hour, a show in which he is clearly not the lead. But he actually won for Appropriate Adult, which I haven’t seen yet. Though I’m a Dominic West fan, his win does feel a bit weak. I mean, there’s no argument that Benedict Cumberbatch is the “lead” of Sherlock, or that the show is anything less than a star-making, internationally-applauded performance. (I feel the same way about Jon Hamm on Mad Men – how is Hamm not winning every Best Actor award for his epic performance as Don Draper?) Still, Sherlock’s nemesis, James Moriarty – played beautifully by actor Andrew Scott – won a BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor. Well deserved. Moriarty wins again!!!! You can read more about the winners here.

As for Cumby, while on the red carpet, he had to field questions about being seen as a “sex symbol” nowadays. He’s even topped some of the “sexiest man” polls in the UK, which he finds hilarious. Cumby said, “I don’t know about the world’s [sexiest man]. Or anybody’s… Maybe in my flat I’m the world’s sexiest man because I’m the only guy living in my flat. I’m very flattered. It’s so silly that it just makes me laugh. I see all the faults that I’ve seen for 35 years of my life with myself so I don’t know how else to take it other than to giggle.” As for Season 3 of Sherlock… apparently, Steven Moffat (the writer/producer of Sherlock) says that he hasn’t written a word of it yet. Damn it!

I’m including photos of Cumby, Dominic West, Andrew Scott and Matt Smith (Dr. Who for the Whovians). Matt Smith and Cumby are truly two of oddest-looking men in the world.

After “The Wire,” Dominic West can win all of the awards

  2. Dorothy#1 says:

Even though I would qualify myself as a cumberbitch, I have to agree with him!!!

Although I still am a huge Dr Who fan, I reallly, really miss David Tennant. 🙁

    • maryoomba says:

      haha, ‘cumberbitch’- love it

    • ZenB!tch says:

I can’t watch Dr. Who anymore. I can’t stand watching the spastic Matt Smith. He makes me cringe. I call him the Dorktor.

I can’t watch Joe Cocker either so it’s a pattern with me.

When they get a new Doctor call me.

      • galaxygirl says:

I haven’t stopped complaining since Tennant was replaced & I miss a sexy Dr. WHO! WHY oh WHY did they have to change the formula. 😛

        BC is talented.
MS is too but was so spoiled with DT I don’t want a replacement that couldn’t attract me.

  3. Eve says:

Dominic West’s award is well deserved. He’s one of the criminally underrated actors I love.

P.S.: I tried really hard not to comment on that dude’s forehead (Scott) but…SERIOUSLY, that has to be the biggest one I’ve ever seen! o_O

    • I Choose Me says:

I know. Obviously it’s what the chap was born with and it hasn’t stopped him from being all that he can be but yikes! It’s all I could see.

  4. birdie says:

I am very sad Benedict didn’t win, he deserved it! He looks very good here *sigh* He is just so handsome!!

    • RuddyZooKeeper says:

Robbed. Just robbed. I’m watching the 2nd season again and find myself seeing spots–I’m not breathing! It’s just that freaking good!

  5. Lindy says:

Sherlock AND Dr. Who, all in one go?!?! Well, GOOOOOOOOOOD Morning! I don’t even need my coffee, I just get to look at these pretty men. Yum. Thank you, Kaiser!

  6. ssa says:

Matt Smith esta feo! I’m sorry, that’s not a nice thing to say but I can’t help it. I will judge anyone who finds him attractive.

    • JuliaDomna says:

      Agreed. esta feo.

    • NaomiCampbellsPhone says:

Matt Smith and Benedict Cucumberjizz are just two guys I don’t get. I’m usually all about hot Poms but yeah, I don’t get these two. Thankfully, Dominic West made an appearance in this post so I didn’t completely hurl my ricies 😉

      • I Choose Me says:

I tried and failed not to giggle at what you wrote. Your comment was the perfect blend of hilarious and bitchy. Love it. 😀

        I like your handle too.

    • ZenB!tch says:

      LOL!

Matt Smith es mas que feo, es horrible! Cumberbatch parece que traè una mascara de plàstico pero lo aguanto. Smith me repugna.

Pardon my bad American Spanish but that was funny. I know a girl who loves MS. She loves anyone who is English. She also loved the 50 Shades books so what can I say.

In English: Math Smith is more than ugly, he’s horrifying. Cumberbatch looks like he is wearing a plastic mask but I can stand him. Smith repels (repulses) me.

  7. fluffybunny says:

I love Bendy but I can’t get over him as that creepy pedophile rapist in Atonement. He’s so brilliant and versatile. As for looks, he’s the most amazing combination of both his parents…

Speaking of creepy, I think Dominic should win all the awards for taking on Fred West. Blehhhhhhh.

    • Leaf says:

Watch doctor who and his interviews his personality makes attractive. I find him incredibly handsome. Judge me.

      • fluffybunny says:

You mean Matt Smith? Benedict is Sherlock. As for Smith, I don’t like his Doctor. Give me Tennant or Eccleston or Baker or even Sylvester McCoy. lol.

    • ZenB!tch says:

I’ve never seen Atonement but I do think he might also make a good Christian Grey since he is a tad creepy looking. He’s a decent actor from what little I’ve seen but he is just so weird and plastic looking. He looks like the after shot of Liz Hurley’s BF.

  8. cupidtyrox says:

I think it’s the combination of too little eyes & too high cheekbones that makes Cumberbatch look odd

  9. sem says:

He looks like alien or something.

    • Andie B says:

Yep Cumby is slightly odd looking in still photos..but on screen moving about and talking with that great voice, he’s quite sexy..imo.

  10. sem says:

    And his fangirls are crazy.

    • Mairead says:

      Yup! 😀

But in fairness we’re not quite as, errr, “enthusiastic” as some others. Colin Farrell’s spring to mind. * shifty eyes *

  11. Ann says:

I have to admit: I think he’s pretty unfortunate looking, I’d even say he’s ugly.

    • Amelia says:

      *points to door*
      Out. Get out.
      Immediately.

Seriously, you’ve got to see this guy in motion.

      • RuddyZooKeeper says:

Yes, definitely. He must be speaking and moving. He may be a perfect roob in “real life,” but lord his acting transforms him into a work of art.

      • RuddyZooKeeper says:

That said, I have no idea who the other guy is.

      • ZenB!tch says:

I’ve seen him in motion and while I don’t think he is as bad as Ann thinks – my vitriol is reserved for Matt Smith – I do not find him attractive in any way.

I do agree that seeing him in motion makes him less hideous but he still looks like the unfortunate victim of bad plastic surgery so totally not hot – decent actor though.

    • Jordan says:

I don’t know if I’d say he was ugly, but he is unattractive. He has beady eyes that seem too small and close together for his long face. But to each their own. That’s what makes us unique.

    • bluhare says:

I’m with you, Ann. He’s about as sexy as a vacuum cleaner bag.

  12. M3l says:

Ben and Matt were adorable introducing Steven. I watched it 3 times 😀

Very impressed Andrew Scott won, his the most amazing Moriarty.

  13. Amelia says:

OHHHHHHHH, I love him I love him I love him!!!
Self proclaimed Cumberbitch right here! Now, if only I could bottle his voice I’d make a fortune…
So happy Andrew Scott won Best Supporting, I saw him on his run in the West End and he is a truly mesmerising actor. Really hoping to see more of him soon.
Out of interest, has the whole of Sherlock series 2 finished in the US now? Or are you still watching? Because I’m a bit wary of giving away spoilers at the mo…

    • JulieM says:

Amelia: Yes, it’s done. Go ahead if you want.

I’m a Cumberbitch too, but Andrew Scott is psychotic goooood.

  14. Kristen says:

You can post on Benedict Cumberbatch and Dominic West until the cows come home. They are gorgeous! + they have voices that just make me melt.

On the other hand, I do not understand Matt Smith. I do not understand why he’s Dr. Who. He always reminds me of a petulant teenager.

  15. Sabrina says:

Matt Smith and Benedict presented a special award to Steven Moffat… It was so cute: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eSFSHhMc85U

  16. Agnes says:

    this guy is SO freaky-looking…

  17. bellyache says:

That last pic made me giggle. Hehe. He’s so handsome. Sigh.

  18. daz says:

i like sherlock but Appropriate Adult is f***ing good and dominic is very good in it. very creepy in the way he just draws you in.

  19. Linda says:

    Love him in Sherlock.

  20. C Fox says:

I think Matt Smith is goregous and fun in motion, but as much as I want to, the reason I watch Sherlock is for Martin Freeman….that’s who my fangirl obsession goes to on that.

    • Tiffany says:

I am with you C Fox, Freeman does not get enough credit for what he brings to that series. He is the straight man of the duo but it takes a special talent to pull that off. The season finale, yeah, he brought his A game. But with The Hobbit coming, everyone will know who he is.

      • Mairead says:

I have to agree, I wasn’t that impressed with Andrew Scott, but loved the subtleties Freeman brought. My favourite was him breaking out the “military walk” for their trip to the military base.

  21. gobo says:

Cumberbatch’s suit… that is some freaking beautiful tailoring.

    • iseepinkelefants says:

Ooo someone who speaks my language. I always thought I was a bit weird for my suit love.

      • EscapedConvent says:

Not weird at all! Absolutely no one wears a suit so elegantly as Cumby. And I have never seen anyone look so fabulous with their hands in their pockets.

“Brainy is the new sexy.” –A Scandal in Belgravia

    • Mairead says:

      Co-signed

    • Anguishedcorn says:

Love to have found a little pocket of suit-loving ladies. Co-sign this!

  22. Nymeria says:

In response to the CB headline…

    It should, Cumby, it should.

  23. Reece says:

Sad there won’t be new Sherlock for a while but they’re all super busy aren’t they? Moffat has been working on Dr. Who lately. Benedict is filming Star Trek. Martin Freeman is in New Zealand.

All of these guys are interesting looking. But I still like them. Personality wins over “interesting looking” any day. My friend calls Matt Smith the cro magnon Dr. Who. She’s an Eccleston fan, 9th doctor.

    • iseepinkelefants says:

Rumor has it they won’t start filming till January (if that). That means it should be a whole year before anything comes out.

Gah I hate British telly (not really). Their schedules are so weird (and the way they handle a series is weird as well).

      • Amelia says:

Well you have whopping great gaps in the middle of your series! At least we finish our shows in one go ;P

    • ZenB!tch says:

Cro-Magnon and Neanderthal have just been insulted. I loved both Eccleston and Tennant. I eagerly await the 12th Doctor. Until then, I can’t watch.

  24. k says:

I don’t understand this ideal that someone is sexy or goodlooking only when they are in motion. because if they are not handsome or oddlooking standing still, then they are the same moving around. [cumby, fassdong]

    • Rll says:

      Wrong

      • EscapedConvent says:

You’re right—wrong! It makes a difference. In still photos he was interesting, but in the dynamo that is Sherlock, he is compelling.

    • Mairead says:

To be fair Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Aniston are exactly the same, they are never as attractive in photos as they are in motion.

    • ZenB!tch says:

Matt Smith is WORSE moving. I don’t think Cumby or Fassy are hot but they are better speaking or shall I say better when viewed as more than one flat dimension. I was going to say in 3D but I didn’t want it to sound like a 3D movie.

Some people are just not photogenic… my nose has to be hit just right or I go from gorgeous to hideous. I am neither.

I finally saw the Avengers and I oddly feel that way about Thor. I didn’t get him until now…. those eyes… they don’t show up in photos. Oh wait… I did see Thor in 3D.

    • Adrien says:

People are in love with the actor’s or popstar’s onscreen/onstage persona. A lot of rockstars I don’t get in pictures but when I see them in concerts, I magically fall in love with them. Hugh Laurie for example. When you first saw him as Cruella de Ville’s henchman or Stuart Little’s dad or Rachel Green’s plane seatmate, would you immediately think he is dashing? Then House, M.D. happened, making him one of the most appealing actors on teeveee.

  25. Halfmydadsage says:

Yay cumberbatch love! And Matt smith. It is Christmas! Yay baftas.

  26. Laura says:

For those who don’t get the allure of the Cumberbatch, try this: http://youtu.be/TdphtMWjies

If you still don’t get it… I just don’t know what to do for you.

    • EscapedConvent says:

I was just about to post this! Thank you, Laura. If listening to this poem in Cumby’s deep velvet voice doesn’t affect you…..well, I hope you’re still breathing.

  27. iseepinkelefants says:

I wanted Andrew Scott to win. I was so happy when he did. He was brilliant.

I didn’t get it before but the Cumberbitches win their argument (though I still can’t with that name). I finally get it, he is really sexy. I’m a recent convert.

But yes he is a bit weird looking (sort of like an ailen). He always looks different it seems (in Sherlock he doesn’t look like the same guy from Four Lions for instance and the same could be said about Tinker).

    • CG says:

I actually really dislike Moriarty. I don’t know if it’s the actor (never seen him in anything else that I’m aware of) or the way the character is written, but he’s just so annoyingly over-the-top with the weird voice inflections and stuff. I love all the other actors on the show and think they do a great job, but Moriarty is just too “look at me!!!!!” for my taste.

      • shaboo says:

moriarty’s accent is ridiculous. I have no idea what the actor is going for. He’s so incredibly over the top too, which might be ok if we was actually menacing, but he comes across as a ‘dweeb’.

      • Mairead says:

I have to agree with you, especially in season one. He was far better and disturbing in season two, but the damage was done.

It’s a shame because I’ve liked Scott in anything else I’ve seen him in, the excellent “My Life in Film” with Kris Marshall from some years back stands out.

  28. Zoya says:

I havent had a celebrity crush in ages but OMG I find this man so incredibly sexy and beautiful…love the suit, love the smile, love the hair, love the voice….sigh, he’s so dreamy.

PS – Benedict spent his gap year teaching English at a Tibetan monastery which is near my home in the foothills of the Himalayas in India (not that i met him or anything)Was so happy when I heard it for the first time 🙂

  29. DreamyK says:

I want to name my next pet “Higginsbottom Cumberbatch”. Just because.

  30. shaboo says:

my god. Moriarty is absolutely terrible, very strange acting and a crap character

what on earth were they thinking giving Andrew Scott an award.

I used to think Cumberbatch was hideous but after watching Sherlock I’ve gotten more used to his face and sometimes he looks good

  31. B says:

I haven’t seen Sherlock, but I just have heard way too much hype about it and am already tired of it.

I’m glad that Dominic West won. He’s a very good actor, and like someone said in the comments before…after The Wire, he can just keep winning everything.

  32. ViktoryGin says:

I won’t begrudge you ladies for having your tastes, but I am incapable of being attracted to anyone that looks like Butthead from ‘Beavis and Butthead’

Brilliant casting choice btw if they ever film a live action version…(ducks tomatoes)

    • birdie says:

      yeah… shut up

    • divax says:

I concur. He has the eyes of a pig, although his voice is very sexy – definitely a voice and face for radio, imho. Dominic West is delicious (and Eton educated to boot!)

    • RuddyZooKeeper says:

Oh crap, that is spot on! Out loud chuckles! I’m still in love, but all the more reason to keep my husband away from this show.

    • ZenB!tch says:

Cumby as Butthead and MS as Beavis?

  33. Like Matt Smith a lot. I like what he does with the Doctor. I like how he can go from befuddled to angry in no time. I like how he never seems to forget that under the youthful exterior is a tired old man with no place to call home. Of the new Doctors, Eccleston’s take was interesting, Tennant was awesome but eventually, he got to be a bit much, and Smith is probably my favorite. But of ALL the Doctors, I’m a Tom Baker girl.

Side note – I had the pleasure of meeting Matt Smith, Arthur Darvish, and Karen Gillan when they were filming in New York. My sister-in-law is in casting and she helped get the local talent for the shoot.

  34. benny says:

Those are some really ugly men. To give them the benefit of the doubt, maybe they are really nice and intelligent and funny. At least, I hope they are, because man, those are some really ugly men.

  35. Ms Deb says:

Just finished 50 Shades of Grey. Benedict Cumberbatch IS Christian Grey.

  36. MB says:

I dont get it. I find this guy about as far away from attractive as anyone on TV of Film can get. Those piggy eyes!!

  37. Lisa says:

Do not get his appeal AT ALL. I think people love the character more than anything.

  38. Mouse says:

God, how I love odd looking men.

  39. Adrien says:

“Matt Smith and Cumby are truly two of oddest-looking men in the world.”
–They are English. They are allowed to be quirky and idiosyncratic. If they were Americans, they would be classified as fugs.
I don’t really get Cumbs appeal. I haven’t seen Sherlock so maybe that’s why. I used to have a cat that looks like Cumberbatch (some say Ian Brown of Stone Roses). She died so everytime I see Cumbs, I tear up.

  40. Ollie says:

The people who post such negatives messages on here must have such a soulless life.

Thanks for the photos of Benedict. He looks lovely. Extremely James Bondish (especially on the union jack red carpet).

It was great to read that Dominic and Benedict met up at Benedict’s hotel. Its sweet to think Dominic went to find Benedict after the win and they spent the rest of the night getting hammered on whisky sours. [The story is on tumblr]

  41. LittleDeadGirl says:

Err … he’s kind of sexy when he moves and talks as Sherlock but I don’t see it in photos. Also no one especially no man should describe themselves as having giggled unless you are 10. Not sexy. Still He seems very nice and smart so points to him for that.
