True Blood recap: it’s finally getting good, right? (spoilers for last night’s episode)

There’s not a lot going on today except for multiple analyses of every angle of the TomKat divorce (which, you know, we’re doing too) so I’d like to revisit my favorite summer show, “True Blood.” As Lainey promised, it finally picked up steam in this fourth episode this season. Everything seemed to come to a head. There were major developments in almost all the trailing plots, and it got interesting. The one weak spot, as usual, was simpering Sookie. She got drunk like a 14 year-old raiding her parent’s liquor cabinet for the first time. When she started making out with Alcide I actually went “ewww.” Both of those characters mean nothing to me, so I kind of hope they end up together, although you get the feeling that it won’t go any further than the couch. (“You love me.” GMAB you twit!)

Anyway, finally something happened, and it happened to everyone, including some yuppie shifters that I had forgotten existed and was glad to see bite it. I even started caring about Terry and his Marine buddies’ backstory. There was a whole crazy fairy burlesque world where lucky mortal men got dragged for dreamlike sexy times. This is one ambitious show, but it makes me wonder why it took so long this season. Couldn’t they have parsed out the climaxes among the different plots so that we maintained interest? It was kind of drag up until now. Why did it have to happen all at once like that? Here’s E!’s recap, which does a good job of giving the highlights:

Well and Truly Dead: Finally we get to see scary Roman (Christopher Meloni) with some blood on his hands, and face. The child vampire—who could have been a cool Kirsten Dunst-type, but was lacking substance—is the big traitor. And he leaves us with a splash. Who keeps a snuff film on their computer, really? Was this a setup?

Broken Home: It’s no state secret that Eric (Alexander Skarsgård) and Pam (Kristen Bauer van Straten) are not only our favorite characters, but their fascinating maker-progeny relationship is also our favorite. And now our hearts are broken after Eric’s touching goodbye and renunciation of their blood ties. Crying blood tears forever.

Beer Before Liquor: Sookie is in a very bad place. Between confessing to murder, trying to turn herself into the police and having to bail from her homicidal haunted car, the girl needs a stiff drink. Or eight. And a cute werewolf (with amazing abs) to make out with doesn’t hurt. But what’s with her exes creeping outside the window?

Misc. Extras: Terry (Todd Lowe) and Scott Foley’s sojourn into South Dakota is beginning to remind us of Game of Thrones’ Mother of Dragons. Completely out of the main action. What are they doing out there? Not sure we care. What does it have to do with anything else? Probably nothing, except to teach the lesson that killing civilians during a war is bad.

Also, fairies are back in Bon Temps. But the big bombshell is that vampire killed Sookie and Jason’s (Ryan Kwanten) parents. Oh and Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis) is losing his mind and his creepy alter ego tried to kill Sookie. Enough storylines for you?

Rewind Moment: Sookie drunkenly singing to “Escape (The Piña Colada Song)” and changing the words to suit her present situation.

[From E! Online]

Sooki’s rendition of the Pina Colada song was pretty funny for a couple of minutes. The scene quickly went downhill from there, though. E! also has a list of the best one-liners last night, but my favorite was when Bill found Jessica’s joint and told her it was “low quality sh*t.”

I just was looking through Tumblr for True Blood gifs and I found this hilarious one. The death app was ingenious, you have to admit.

I’ll keep watching, as always. I can’t help but think that True Blood kind of blew it’s load on every single plot line, though. Is it going to improve or just go downhill from here?

Here’s a clip where Pam shows Eric her new progency “Congratulations, you’re a grandfather.” Priceless!

Sookie’s cousin works for the fairies now? I thought she was dead.

Bill gives Tara vampire advice on being suicidal.

omg i love that Bill actor. he is so good-looking >__<
I hate when people all droool over Eric actor and bash Bill actor hehehehe

  2. thatttbitch says:

Eric is just so hot…it’s ridiculous …

    • hairball says:

I don’t think Eric is as hot as he used to be. To me, he was the absolute honest in Season 2.

      • Leigh says:

EVERYTHING was better in Seasons 1 & 2!

      • SEM says:

This show had an awesome Season 1 and has stunk it up badly since then. It’s complete and utter tripe now and only worth watching if you wanna see Eric’s naked ass…. 😉

      • mayamae says:

I think so too but I can’t figure out why. He looked better with the long hair. Since he plays a Viking I would love for him to use his Swedish accent – I’ve never heard it. Also he’s just no longer menacing to me. He’s just sad eyes and puppy dog looks – which sounds appealing but doesn’t work for the character. He also looks so young with the short hair.

    • rufustfirefly says:

Alexander is so ridiculously beautiful, it’s insane. His scenes with Kristin last night were by far the best. They raised the bar for everyone else by comparison. It felt like I was watching a much more mature, grounded show when those two were together on screen. He can relay so much emotion with a glance or a single word. Such a talented guy.

As for the rest, it wouldn’t hurt my feelings if everyone else took a hike. I wish they would kill off 1/3 of the over-bloated cast including: Terry, Arlene, Holly, Hoyt, Sam, Luna, Emma, and anything to do with the weres. They haven’t delivered with the over-hyped Vampire Authority and Alcide makes me want to jab forks in my eyes. Don’t even get me started on the bromance. No matter how much they try to force certain characters, it’s just not working.

      • mayamae says:

My favorite book in the series was actually the one they based part of last season on – boy did they screw it up.

In that book the witch cast the spell on Erik taking his memory and making him so sweet and innocent. They did that part right.

But the battle with the witches incorporated all the supernaturals in an organic and believable way. The bad witch was extremely powerful because she drank V and if memory serves was also a were. Sookie joined forces with Marnie (who was a good witch in the book), vampires, and weres. It was suspenseful and such a good book. Also, when Erik’s memory returned he forgot that he and Sookie had been involved. Which broke her little heart.

  3. hairball says:

Agree- FINALLY the show is getting interesting. I don’t care about the guy who plays Alcide, but I don’t mind the Alcide character at all. I also don’t think he’s a bad actor in TB. But it is irritating if now this is the season Sookie is with Alcide, rotating among the characters, only to end it just I time by the end of the season.

I actually felt very sad for Bill when he saw Sookie making out with Alcide. She looked like a total slut.

And I love Pam, but her face is really distracting – plastic surgery distracting. Those trout lips are REALLY bad.

    • lucy2 says:

I actually think the lips are real – if you look at old photos of her, she has them then too, long before the injections became popular. I think she’s gotten herself SO skinny though that it’s affecting her face and making her features seem more prominent.

      • Samigirl says:

She’s definitely way too thin. I mean, she wore that teensy corset the whole episode…and she’s probably as big around as my thigh.

      • Sonia says:

No I think she’s gotten some lip injections. Her body is PERFECT. She’s not too skinny. She’s gorgeous. Sorry but I feel like girls who think she is too skinny may be a little on the too well fed side themselves. She has the perfect body.

  4. lucy2 says:

It’s getting better, but I’m not as glued to the TV as I once was.
I thought Hadley was dead too.
The Eric/ Pam stuff was good, I liked Jessica helping out Jason, and the fairy stuff is more interesting than it was before.
I think we’ve found Sookie I can like – drunk, singing Sookie. As for Alcide and her, eh. Who cares, both are kind of annoying. Though his cover story was good, blaming Marcus.

    • cr says:

I’d have to go back and watch her last scenes from S3 (the last season she was seen) but I’d been under the impression that Hadley (and Hunter) had thought about going into hiding.

I wonder what the Fae have in mind for the Stackshouses-I don’t trust the Fae.

  5. hairball says:

And I HATE the Terry storyline. Wtf?? Who gives a cr*p?? It makes no sense to the rest of TB. I CAN’T stand when they show that storyline. It’s like what??

    • cr says:

One of the commenters during the EW live blog was wondering if the Iraqi storyline won’t end up giving us demons (maybe a fire demon). Which makes about as much sense as anything else.
But if is demons, why drag the whole thing out? That was the problem with the Maenad storyline, even Laffy’s a medium storyline from last season.
      Learn to condense extraneous storylines.

    • LittleDeadGirl says:

I feel the same way. Maybe they are going to introduce a supernatural with it but right now it’s like just this weird side story we have to keep going down for no reason. It involved NO ONE else and it’s like I get it … it was sad and horrible but we already knew shit happened to Terry that messed him up. Him and Arlene just needed to be cute background couple at this point in time.

  6. samanthalous says:

They need to cut out the army storyline

  7. grabbyhands says:

I’ll still watch it, but it has become more of a chore than something I look forward to, which makes me sad because I used ti love this show so much. Once again, Alan Ball is intent on cramming the season with a bunch of needless story lines that no one really cares about-Terry and Arlene, Andy and Holly, Sam and Luna and their magic horse friends, Jason’s total lack of character growth and anything to do with the fairies. I want to see more of Pam and Eric’s backstory, more Steve Newlin and I’m dying for King Russell to come back. If I have to sit through the rest of the season listening to Sookie whine, I think I’ll hang it up. I kept hoping that Alcide would hand her over to Debbie’s parents.

    • hatsumomo says:

I feel that way too. I still watch it, but just barely. An I cant get any pleasure out if it. kinda like bad sex..

  8. mia girl says:

Last night’s episode was the best in a loooooong time (and that includes most of last season). I actually teared up during the Eric / Pam scene.

But I don’t like the farie crap. It’s so, cheesy… I feel like I’m watching some kind of cruise boat entertainment.

I do like the Eric & Bill dynamic. They should make a spin off where they live together. Like a vampire “Odd Couple”. I’d watch that!

    • marie says:

Ha, I did to! My boyfriend looked at me and said “are you crying??”
I liked the episode and so glad the boy vamp is gone, he was annoying..
I think, and maybe I’m the only one, the head girl vamp, can’t remember her name, is bad too..
I’m not a fan of the war storyline either but I think Scott Foley is the bad one setting fires..
And I would totally watch Eric and Bill as the new “Odd Couple”
Pam and Lafayette are still my favorite characters though

  9. LittleDeadGirl says:

It’s getting better, and I’ve defended this show a lot, but even I’m starting to get bored. I love Pam and now she’s tied to Tara, ugh. I couldn’t care less about Terry and his stupid plot. Sookie was whiney as usual although I like her an Alcide together. I don’t even get where Eric and Bill at going with their plot anymore. It’s all making me sad.

We still got Pam though and she is just awesome. The only time I felt anything was when her and Eric had their moment.

    • cr says:

My problem with the Alcide/Sookie hookup was the situation and the timing-they’re both drunk and didn’t he just abjure Debbie and then Sookie kills her?
Not the best start to a possible new phase of the S/A relationship.

      • LittleDeadGirl says:

Well I think that’s the point of their hook up. Two damaged people in pain who care about each other but I don’t think it’s love. I think they are steering the plot to be her and Bill as the main final couple.

  10. Az says:

So I was the only one who found Chris Meloni covered in blood really hot? Okay, then.

  11. BeeBee says:

With regard to ‘not a lot going on today’ gossip- wise, I can report from perusing the Daily Mail that Kate Middleton wore an ugly dress to a wedding, and Leann Rimes wore an ugly outfit to dinner. So yeah, slow news day.

  12. Jenna says:

Yeah, still happy I gave up on this sucky show last season. Skarsie needs to get on another show…preferably a quality show…where he can show off some of that lovely skin of his.

    • cr says:

I think next season will be its last.

And I think Alex will probably try and focus on movies for awhile.

      • Jenna says:

Hopefully; He hasn’t chosen the best movies in the past, but his future projects seem promising! WMK looks good! 🙂

      • cr says:

I think he’s getting a lot better offers now, but he, and the other leads, have mentioned that they’ve had to pass up film roles because it conflicts with TB.

      • Jenna says:

Hopefully next season will be its last. It just got renewed. Bleh.

      • mayamae says:

I love him but I think his ability to play drama is poor – Straw Dogs.

He does campy humor very well.

  13. CC says:

It’s funny, I’m still downloading the eps, but couldn’t be bothered so far to even check a single one. Not that I matter to HBO, I don’t and can’t subscribe to their channel, I’m not in the US.

  14. decorative item says:

Sookie gets passed from one character to the next. She’s the girl that can’t live without a man and it’s really irritating.
If I happen to catch the show I will watch it, but I don’t look forward to it anymore.

  15. Eleonor says:

I’m so over Sookie and her precious fairy vagina.
This was the best line EVER.
I want vampires, not all the mess which is around them.

  16. Kaye says:

I believe Alexander Skarsgard is a better actor than people give him credit for. If I see a still picture of him I can usually tell whether he’s in character for the Maisie movie, for True Blood, for Melancholia, or for something else. He does a lot with posture and other subtle gestures.

    • Carragh says:

Pretty much everyone thinks Alex is an amazing actor 🙂

      • mayamae says:

I love him on the show but I’m not sure about the amazing part.

He was just horrible in Straw Dogs trying to do a southern accent. He rapes Kate Bosworth while semi-seducing her and he just could not carry it off at all. He ended up acting it without rage, passion, lack of control, etc. And to think he was actually having an affair with Kate at the time. I was shocked at how poor his acting was because I just love him.

    • MQ says:

I have to agree with you since he has made some good pieces and worked with very interesting character and the body posture . There some works that are from his home land and if you want an interesting character you should see Kill Your Darlings.

      • Starsh says:

I def wouldn’t base his repertoire on Straw dogs! he was good in Melancholia and as for Generation Kill…wow! also, he has been very moving in TB, remember the scene where his maker Godrick went into the sun?

  17. Beth says:

I don’t know what you’re talking about. Sookie was the only part of last night’s episode that didn’t completely SUCK.

This season is a DISASTER. I don’t even care about Eric anymore! They’ve completely ruined all of the characters in this story.

And the Marine war atrocity story is stupid and offensive. I watch True Blood for fantasy, not things that actually could happen, first of all, like an Iraq war crime. But secondly, it’s depicting Marines as homicidal lunatics, and as th wife of a Marine and veteran, that kind of pisses me off.

  18. lucy2 says:

I too am glad that kid vampire is gone. I didn’t know if the show would have the guts to kill him, but happy they did. He was super annoying.
Add me to the list who don’t see the need for Terry’s storyline. It seems like they know people like Terry (he’s one of the few good hearted people on the show) and don’t want to lose the actor, so they’re just making up stuff for him to do that has nothing to do with anything else.

  19. RHONYC says:

i love TB, but i think it’s official…this season it has:

    jumped.
    the.
    shark.

    *tears*

    🙁

  20. Sachi says:

I haven’t seen the latest episode, and I find myself not caring at all. It’s come to the point that I actively refuse to watch it.

Bye, True Blood. It was fun for a while.

  21. Amanda G says:

I wish TB would go back to the basics and cut out all the extra characters. In season one they were all there, but in the background and not all of them needed lines or a story. Now we have about 10 storylines going on and I only care about one…Pam and Eric…. and they only get about 8 minutes an episode. I watch a 52 minute show for 8 minutes worth of interesting story. What a waste!

  22. the original bellaluna says:

While I like Terry, I don’t see why they can’t just focus on Arlene and his relationship and family stuff as a story-line. I get last season (I guess?) but another catastrophic event, right after the last one, is ridiculous. (Scott Foley is totally the pyro.)

I’m glad it’s finally picking up, because it’s actually become a BORE to watch. I DVRd last night’s ep, so I’ll watch it when I get around to it.

    • mayamae says:

I like Terry and Arlene as well. I even thought the demon baby storyline was cute. But this Scott Foley storyline sucks. Supporting characters are supporting for a reason.

The books involved characters together in such an organic way that is lost on the show.

  23. Stubbylove says:

I keep watching too but I find myself less interested/excited in each new episode. I didn’t mind last night with the whole makers and their children thing (Pam and Eric are great) but the “Fairy Club” was LAME.

  24. Mourning the Death of Music says:

I’m in the minority who enjoy and appreciate the sub-plots. It creates a fuller world that you’re looking into. I actually care about the secondary characters and their lives as much as the main, if not more. Do I always like where they go with the stories? No, but I also don’t like where they’ve often gone with the main characters as well.

I have patience and am willing to watch it all play out, much like we must do with our real lives. I truly dislike when I feel a story-line is rushed and drawn to a conclusion to fit into a season timeline.

And, although I’d pick Eric over Bill anyday, I’ve always rooted the most for Alcide.

  25. Jordan says:

I don’t understand why people watch shows they think are crap. Read a book, exercise, get a hobby, anything! As long as people keep watching crap, they’ll keep dishing crap out.

  26. sup says:

loved this ep, looks like the show is getting back on its feet this season

  27. Amy says:

For me the funniest line of the night was Sam telling his shape shifter friends he didn’t recommend anything to eat at Merlotte’s. What with the constant revolving staff and all the drama that goes on there, no wonder! Seriously, I think Sookie and Arlene are the two people who have worked there since the beginning of the show?

I agree with everybody who said Terry’s storyline is boring. They have to give the actor something to do, but delving into his military past… nobody cares about that. The creepy ghost storyline was more interesting from last season!

I don’t really understand the difference between the Authority and the “Sanguinista” movement. The Authority advocates mainstreaming so humans won’t rebel against them and the Sanguinistas (like Russell Edgington) want to drain all humans and make them their slaves?

  28. Stacia says:

The Authority plotline is sooooo boring to me. So much talking and no action. I don’t care about this Vampire politic stuff. I hate to say it but this show is slowly JUMPING THE SHARK. 4 epidsodes in and nothing much has happend. If this show lasts to season 6, I’d be surprised.

  29. From Tokyo says:

I must admit that I don’t care about the vampire storyline at all, or the one with Terry (though I like Terry). I would rather see more about him and Arlene’s relationship – his military friend has been annoying me since he came. I’ve never cared about the faeries, except for Sookie’s power. Sookie’s been largely a non-factor in this season – or rather, it seems like the focus on her has been more minimized than ever. The witchcraft/Lafayette storyline is superfluous as well. One thing that bothers me EVERY SEASON is that every time Jason tries to grow as a person, it’s shot down. When he killed Eggs, when he was gang-raped, when he slept with his old teacher/the situation with Jessica, to name a few – every time he tried to think and evolve as a person, they just shoot it down and make him be dumb, man-whore Jason Stackhouse again. I’d get sick of playing a character like that, though I like Jason.
