Rush Limbaugh says ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ is a liberal conspiracy

I read about this “controversy” yesterday, and it made me laugh and laugh. I’m still laughing – this is one of the best stories ever. You know how the villain in The Dark Knight Rises is named “Bane”? You know how the biggest (debatable) political story in America right now is Mitt Romney’s ties to Bain Capital (and when he actually left Bain, and whether he’ll disclose his Bain income, and when he’ll release his full tax returns, etc)? Well, join those two stories. Is The Dark Knight Rises some kind of “liberal conspiracy” against Mitt Romney with a perfectly timed release? Will voters automatically assume that Bane = Mitt Romney’s Bain? Well, Rush Limbaugh thinks so. Or he thought so yesterday, but now Rush is trying to take it back:

Holy backlash, Batman! One day after slamming “The Dark Knight Rises” for featuring a villain named Bane, which he said benefits the Obama campaign because of its similarity to Mitt Romney’s venture capital firm, Bain, Rush Limbaugh backtracked – slightly – from his earlier comments.

Comic book fans eagerly awaiting the final installment of director Chris Nolan’s Batman trilogy, which opens Friday, however, turned out to be worse whiners than his usual liberal critics.

“Yesterday on this program, I uttered some words about the Batman movie and the evil villain named Bane,” he said during his radio show Wednesday. “I made some comments about it, it doesn’t matter what. I have had more reaction to that than anything – including the Fluke thing,” he said, referencing the controversy stoked earlier this year after Limbaugh called Georgetown law student Sandra Fluke a “slut” and a “prostitute” after she testified before House Democrats on birth control health insurance coverage. “More people are concerned about whatever I might have said or didn’t say about a Batman villain than they are about their own jobs,” continued Limbaugh.

Batfans took exception to Limbaugh’s suggestion that the filmmakers deliberately chose the villain to terrorize Romney’s campaign just months before the election.

“Do you know the name of the villain in this movie? Bane,” Limbaugh said during his show. “The villain in the Dark Knight Rises is named Bane. B-A-N-E. What is the name of the venture capital firm that Romney ran, and around which there’s now this make-believe controversy? Bain. The movie has been in the works for a long time, the release date’s been known, summer 2012 for a long time. Do you think that it is accidental, that the name of the really vicious, fire-breathing, four-eyed whatever-it-is villain in this movie is named Bain.”

Dennis Kneale of Fox Business Channel echoed the point Wednesday in a segment flagged by the group Media Matters: “Is it mere coincidence that the name of the villain is Bane, spelled differently than Bain consulting and Bain capital?”

When reached by the Daily News, Bane co-creator Doug Moench said he was “tickled” by the whole controversy and that politics were the last thing on his mind when the character was introduced in 1993.

“None of us thought about Mitt Romney or Bain capital, trust me,” he said. “It was 20 years ago, for Pete’s sake.”

But Limbaugh vehmently claimed that he’s been misquoted. As conservative comic book fans have long noted, there’s a school of thought that Bruce Wayne – a billionaire with a passion for law and order issues – would naturally be a Republican.

“I even said yesterday, at the end of my whole Batman discussion, that Batman is more like Romney,” he said Wednesday. “Made the point that the rich, wealthy, made the point the rich wealthy hero in the Batman movie is more like Romney and that the Bane guy seems more like an Occupy Wall Street guy. And yet, here I am, supposedly articulating a conspiracy between the comic book creators and the Obama campaign that somehow they created this villain with the same name as Romney’s private equity company. No, all I said yesterday was that the Democrats are going to try to make that linkage.”

[From NYDN]

LMAO. LMAO for all of it – the Bain/Bane thing, Rush having to backtrack, AND for Rush claiming that Bruce Wayne would totally be a law-and-order, fiscally conservative Republican (although…hm…that one might not be completely wrong, actually…?). Obviously, Christopher Nolan has put strong political messages into his Batman trilogy – The Dark Knight was so obviously about the Iraq War, I consider it one of the finest war/insurgency films ever made – but I don’t think Nolan was prescient enough to know that Mitt Romney would get the nomination OR that Bain Capital would be the big political story this year. It’s just luck. Even Nolan didn’t know what to say about it – when asked about Limbaugh’s comments, Nolan said, “I’m not sure how to address something that bizarre, to be honest. I really don’t have an answer for it, it’s a very peculiar comment to make.”

Nolan also addressed the growing, impassioned fan-war over some not so gushy reviews of TDKR – the war SHUT DOWN Rotten Tomatoes it had gotten so bad. Nolan said, “I think the fans are very passionate about these characters the way a lot of people are very passionate. Batman’s been around for over 70 years and there’s a reason for that. He has a huge appeal, so I think you know people certainly respond to the character.” Meh.

LOL! I read this story headline on another site and wondered if he was high or something to come up with such a wacka-doodle assumption.

Pretty sure the writers for his show are so lazy anymore that they just throw darts at a board covered in post-its containing trending twitter tags.

    Yep! that’s Rush for you!!!

  3. Tiffany27 says:

    I’m seeing this tonight!!!!!!!!!!

    • Amelia says:

How?! Isn’t the release date tomorrow? That’s when I’m seeing it, although it may have a different date in GB.
I can’t say I pay too much attention to America’s politicians, apart from Obama and the electoral candidates, but ever since I watched that family guy episode, that’s all I think of now when I hear of Rush.
That’s got to be the most lunatic comparison I’ve ever heard.

      • Crystalline says:

Midnight release is tonight. I know several folks who are going to them and I guess several theaters are going to use all their screens to show it.

    • Tiffany27 says:

      Yep. Midnight showing. I’m pumped!!

Rush Limbaugh is one freakazoid piece of work, yet he’s one of untold millions in this country who have the same warped and dangerous mindset.

I avoid politics like the plague. It’s the same three ring circus side show it’s always been. Mitt, Barack…it doesn’t matter one hoot who’s the Grand Poobah, it’s still the same horseshit.

I wonder if Rush can ascertain hidden messages in “Gilligan’s Island” episodes and its format?

    • Turd Fergussen says:

So if someone disagrees with you politically, they’re of a warped and dangerous mindset? As if liberals are the arbiters of all that’s great and moral. Please.

After RL’s comment, independent commentators noted that although the Bain/Bane wasn’t done intentionally (initially anyway), Obama & Dems will/should milk it as much as possible. Which makes sense, since we’re dealing with a vast section of the electorate that’s easily swayed by Hollywood/pop culture references. It explains why so many get their “news” from Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert.

As one who gets some of her “news”, as well as a lot of entertainment, from Stewart/Colbert, I take exception to that. Where would you suggest I get my news? Fox? Oh wait. That’s entertainment too.

      • videli says:

How about you offering an opinion, regardless of the counterfactual ‘the Dems should/will’ (they haven’t done it yet, right?), on Mr. Limbaugh’s pearl of wisdom?

      • Melanie says:

I don’t think Limbaugh is twisted and warped because he is a conservative. I think he’s twisted and warped because I’ve seen twisted and warped statements he’s made against women, young impoverished children, minorities and science. I do believe it is possible to be conservative without being such a hateful pr*ck.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

TURD-Who gets their news from Jon Stewart? People watch him because he’s funny, intelligent and politically savvy. I don’t think anybody relies on him for the news.

P.S. Why are you on a Gossip blog if you have such contempt for pop culture?

      • Tiffany says:

Turd, why would you suggest that they think that liberals are all great when they wrote, “Mitt, Barack…it doesn’t matter one hoot who’s the Grand Poobah, it’s still the same horseshit.”

Did you not read the comment in full before going off?

      • Deven says:

And where does someone with the lovely, Republican-based name, Turd, get his/her information? Aren’t you drinking from the wrong fountain here? If RL’s is the brain you rely on, you actually need more brain, but not his.

      • flan says:

        @Turd Furgussen.

You can whine all you want about liberals and their ‘evil’ ways , but this man has made it clear that to him women are lower life forms.

So I will in almost every situation be his opponent. Whether it has something to do with liberals or not.

That’s what you get if you wage war on women. We push back.

Also, Mr. Greek made it very clear he was not even a liberal. But you saw him as an immediate enemy just because he doesn’t agree with this guy. People like you and Limbaugh are obsessed with ‘liberals’.

        Chill out.

  7. Mia 4S says:

Nolan’s response to rush is brilliant. Unless the Nolan brothers are clairvoyant or can travel in time…is that what you are saying Rush? LOL!

Why is the critics versus fans thing getting attention now? It always happens. I mean didn’t Samuel L Jackson basically call for that critic who gave the Avengers a mediocre review to be fired? Comic book fans do it, Twilight fans do it, Star Wars fans do it. I suppose it is odd in cases like this where there are very few bad reviews to attack, but it’s not new! Mind you if this discussion brings about some changes I am all for it. I cannot take the fanboys/fangirls, whatever their “persuasion”.

  8. Jackson says:

RL says a lot of things I don’t care about or believe. Every word that comes out of his mouth, in fact.

      • flan says:

It is patently ignorant and anyone with the mental capacity to do a Google search could figure that out. Also, Fyi this movie, part of a trilogy, has been mapped out in preproduction since early 2004. Those liberals are magic warlocks! And the sad thing is that people out in Dumbfu*kistan will believe this crap from him. I don’t care who you vote for, just look through the cest pool of crap information and make and educated decision.

  15. Bedfordmommy says:

As with all the lamestream media – CB – didn’t think you were one… the story is wrong. 1) Romney has released his taxes The Obama campaign just wants more and they will always want more, but he has released what is necessary. 2)I listen to Rush, and he was commenting on what Hollywood does in always trying to equate the evil villain to conservatives…heck the Muppet Movie did it… I find that more and more I have to stop visiting sites that consistently comment negatively about conservatives. It was nice surfing your site for a few years… now I must say goodbye.

    • constance says:

It is sad when people create a line in the sand and force labels on each other to make a delusional distinction between friend and enemy using gimmick jargon. I wish people would learn the delicate art of discussion without finding enemies around every corner. The best thing about humanity is that when push comes to shove we are all human despite our personal opinions. To keep our communities going we must live and learn from each and every perspective to find Understanding. Closed minded people give nothing to the world when they are too afriad to look differentiations in the eye and learn to get along for the greater good.

Just to respond on Romney`s taxes, he has only released one year of taxes when a nominee would release at least ten to twelve years.

They’re not saying, “REPUBLICANS BAD!” They’re insulting RUSH. EFFING. LIMBAUGH. Pill-popping, sanctity of marriage hypocrite, blowhard RUSH. LIMBAUGH. Because he said something STUPID. And I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that if a liberal talking head said something REALLY STUPID about Batman being an analogy for corporate greed or something, Celebitchy would cover it with a big old “what a douche” angle.

Get over yourself. The world is not out to get conservatives any more than it’s out to get liberals, and people like you make us look like a bunch of touchy babies.

      • xxodettexx says:

My understanding is that all candidates provide much, much more information as a show of good faith, whatever their political affiliations and have been conducting themselves this way for quite some time. He doesn’t have to provide more but the seemingly out of the ether choice to not do as the Romans do does call attention to itself, so attention is being paid. Obama’s capitalizing on it but Romney is getting the side eye from a lot of people over this from both parties.

    • Tiffany says:

“1) Romney has released his taxes The Obama campaign just wants more and they will always want more, but he has released what is necessary”

Um….Former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour (R), Alabama Gov. Robert Bentley (R), Michael Steele (R), George Will (R), Weekly Standard Editor Bill Kristol (R), Pete Sessions (R), Ron Paul (R), and the editors of right-wing publication the National Review have ALL called for Romney to release more returns as well.

To suggest that is just the Obama administration that is calling for more to be released is just not factual. This is a bi-partisan position.

    • Kate says:

Ugh. I’m a life long Republican who thinks Rush Limbaugh is a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, hateful pig. He doesn’t speak for me, and never has spoken for me. That people (rightfully) bash this dumbass does not make me want to boycott a site; rather embrace it. More often than not this site calls out asshats of all persuasions, and I’m all for it.

  16. Lucy2 says:

Rush is also the name of a band, and they’re from Canada- which has universal healthcare! I think that clearly makes Rush Limbaugh a socialist.
There’s also Rush Week for fraternities and sororities, where lots of bad stuff goes down. Clearly that makes Rush Limbaugh pro-binge drinking and hazing, doesn’t it?
    (This is fun.)

    • Crystalline says:

As Rush Limbaugh’s secret internet identity, I fully approve of these new conspiracy theories. Now, I shall return to my regularly scheduled insane foaming at the mouth.

  17. Eve says:

Nolan also addressed the growing, impassioned fan-war over some not so gushy reviews of TDKR – the war SHUT DOWN Rotten Tomatoes it had gotten so bad. Nolan said,“I think the fans are very passionate about these characters the way a lot of people are very passionate. Batman’s been around for over 70 years and there’s a reason for that. He has a huge appeal, so I think you know people certainly respond to the character.”

Way to downplay what happened (is still happening on IMDb and other sites). There’s a VAST difference between being passionate about something and wishing death, beating and rape upon those who disagree with you.

    • Mia 4S says:

But again, it always happens with genre movies. One critic noted on Twitter that their most popular article of all time was their negative review of the Avengers thanks to comments tearing him apart. Some Supernatural fans sent threats of harm to the People’s Choice Awards. Twilight fans have harassed people until they leave Twitter. It’s nothing new. I’m honestly asking why we are making a big deal now? Making a big deal of it gives the few crazies (the death threats) the attention they want. Will this be the end of screen names and anonymous commenting?

      • Eve says:

I’m honestly asking why we are making a big deal now? Making a big deal of it gives the few crazies (the death threats) the attention they want.

Except, Mia, it wasn’t a matter of a “few crazies” threatening the reviewers. And not only on Rottentomatoes, but also on IMDb.

And crazy commenters have been criticized before, the very same you mentioned. The reason why IT IS a bigger deal now is that, amazingly, Nolan fanatics managed to outdo all of these previous insane posters. To the point where RT’s editor in chief Matt Atchity had to address the situation (he didn’t do before with The Avengers, for instance, the moderators were enough to take care of that) and updated TWICE, the last one to say he HAD to shut down the comments section. He had never done that before:

        http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/the_dark_knight_rises/news/1925558/the_dark_knight_rises_–_this_is_why_we_cant_have_nice_things/

Devin Faraci, one of the reviewers who were bashed, had this to say about the situation:

        http://badassdigest.com/2012/07/16/batman-fans-lose-their-minds-over-negative-dark-knight-rises-reviews/

Some people asked him about which fans were worse and he said this:

That felt really special, because the only fans worse than Batfans are the video game fans who make games about beating up women who try to examine games through a feminist lens.

Those things were all terrible. My good friend Amy Nicholson was attacked horrifically for her AVENGERS review. I obviously got a ton of shit for my SPIDER-MAN review.

But none of these match the ferocity of the Batfans. At all. Batfans make the AVENGERS assholes look like amateurs at hate.

What I don’t get is why you always get so defensive whenever I point out the craziness of these fanatics. If you’re not one of them, then I AM NOT talking about you.

      • Mia 4S says:

Did you know Warner Brothers is releasing DKR and owns Rotten Tomatoes? Conspiracy! LOL! Between that and Rush the curiousity factor is insane. This movie is going to make ridiculous money.

I still don’t think Chris Nolan should address this directly. He didn’t invite it, he didnt encourage it, and anyone crazy enough to make a death threat wouldn’t listen to him anyway. His job is to continue making blockbuster award winning films. I can’t stand it when people route against an actor or filmmaker because “oh their stans are annoying and crazy!” That is a sign to me of someone FAR too invested in online geek culture.

I enjoy a good debate Eve, I know you are not talking about me. I object to giving fanatics the attention they desire. All these articles make it sound more important than it is in the real world.

      • Eve says:

Yes, I do (know Warner owns Rottentomatoes). And for a long time. I don’t get your tone. It feels like you’re trying to ridicule my comments with all these “LOLs” whenever you reply to me, or suggest that I’m nothing but a “fangirl” on another thread.

So spare me of this bullsh*t, will you?

Whenever I see a post about TDKR I have to think twice before posting anything because I can almost see the first reply to me coming from you. I don’t like refraining myself from speaking my mind for the fear of being mocked. Especially because I don’t think I have been disrespectful to you before.

I’m not “FAR too invested in geek culture” — again, with the condescending tone. This particular episode (angry Bat-fans) is everywhere on the internet. Even CNN covered it. And I think it’s an important matter. I see often on Celebitchy posts criticizing the bashing of models (like the ones about Kate Upton), or criticizing online bullying. This classifies as online bullying, and to a whole new (crazy) level.

Finally, I’ve said here on Celebitchy (many times), loud and clear, the reasons why I didn’t like Christopher Nolan’s films — and not A SINGLE ONE of them had anything to do with his fans.

      • Eve says:

I object to giving fanatics the attention they desire. All these articles make it sound more important than it is in the real world.

And I object to these fanatics going on hateful, crazy rants WITHOUT being called out on that — without any sort of punishment for such horrible behaviour. I believe in freedom of speech, but some things MUST be addressed or they will get out of control — horrible things on the internet usually escalate. Ignoring them won’t make them go away.

But you know what really works? Shutting down the comments section — you have no idea of how much calmer they became on IMDb after that little letter from Atchity.

    • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

It’s exactly what happened in 2008 to David Edelstein, people going batshit over this franchise is old hat.

      • Eve says:

They’re even more aggressive this time, believe me. I guess that’s because they didn’t expect the number of negative reviews (especially from “top critics”) in such short period of time.

The Dark Knight gathered 282 reviews on RT — only 18 of them were qualified as “rotten” and only 4 of them were from “top critics”.

In less than 3 days, TDKR has already 22 “rotten” (out of 142), 8 of them being from “top critics”.

And even those who praised the movie (TDKR) had some minor issues with it. Something that almost didn’t happen with TDK back in 2008.

      • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

Pauline Kael was fired from her job for not liking The Sound Of Music. The overreaction of fans who are a bit beneath sanity has a long and pathetic history.

I’m kidding of course, that’s incredibly ridiculous.

Eh, I’m bored now. When’s the Bourne Legacy coming out? 🙂

      • Eve says:

        @ Jo ‘Mama’ Besser:

Many asked — actually, they demanded — some of these critics were fired.

And I wouldn’t mind if their comments stopped there. It’s silly, but it’s harmless (I don’t think anyone is going to fire a reviewer over this).

Death threats are something else though.

      • Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I guess the fanaticism does have a slow burn escaling quality. I know that the first time, calls for termination and death threats did result from the less than glowing review but I don’t think it was taken as seriously. From what I read four years ago, there was a ‘lookit the crazy fanboys’ respsonse to the vociferiousness back then, now everyone’s seeing that the opposition is much more sinister this time.

I don’t get how people can go so looney over a film like this–this is the story of the man who is also a bat, all told.

Sounds like to me, that someone tumbled down those 12 steps…..again!

  26. Stubbylove says:

I’m suprised people even listen, let alone care, what this blowhard spews out of his piehole.

  27. AnneOriginal says:

I’ll never understand why anyone would listen to anything Limbaugh says. He is disgusting. I’ve thought so ever since he decided to verbally attack Chelsea Clinton when she was still a kid.

And it is fairly well known that he is nothing more than a sex (rape?) tourist.

  28. Evyn says:

When I first saw this headline, I thought it was a story in “The Onion.” Is he serious?! I espescially like how after realizing how stupid his remarks were, he deflects it onto the Dems. No one even considered this Bane/Bain theory. That bats##t came outta his a## & no one else’s.

  29. Nicole says:

This is completely off topic, but that last pic of Bane is sexy! 🙂

    • ZenB!tch says:

Totally!!! I’m not into Tom Hardy or any of the men of Batman but the costumes are hot. It’s what 50 Shades wishes it was.

UGH! Now I just wondered about Christopher Nolan’s sexual proclivities. Eh, I just looked at Limbaugh, nothing phases me anymore.

  30. Jayna says:

    Rush is such an idiot.

  31. Janet says:

Am I the only one who is completely underwhelmed by this movie coming out?

  32. EmilyM. says:

Great, now I have to defend Rush. If you actually listen to the tape, he’s mostly talking about Democrats trying to make a Bane = Bain connection. He doesn’t endorse any sort of theory that they’re correct, he just talks about it a little, and even laughs while he does, suggesting he doesn’t really believe it. This whole thing is a non-story.

  33. hoya_chick says:

It pained me to click on this as I LOATHE this douche. But alas, it’s a slow gossip day so I’m here. I love that he didn’t even have balls to actually say what he originally said and was all dismissive of Sandra Fluke. Such a punk. Talking out his ass and needs a swift kick to the crotch. Don’t even want to associate TDKR with him. He needs to shut his ignorant ass up!

  34. ds says:

So basically people in other parts of the world will not be able to get the bigger message ’cause to be honest these things mean nothing to me. From the EU point of view. This is just plain stupid. Good for
    the promo I guess.

  35. original kate says:

why is rush still babbling? shouldn’t he be at the UPS store, shopping for bubble wrap and boxes for his move to costa rica?

after all, he promised to live there if obamacare was passed.

  36. deehunny says:

that’s a super flashy belt, batman!

  37. Jordan says:

Is he on drugs again? The man would be a joke if there weren’t people out there who actually took him seriously, which is scary.

  38. Issa says:

LMAO at Bane in a company suit 🙂 Rush has more in common with Bane than Romney. Both are huge, drug addicted thugs bent of destroying society.

  39. Bobby says:

    All conservatives are poop heads

    *Crawls back under bridge

    • Bobby says:

Oh, and Limbaugh baby. That tie is so fuck-n ugly it almost makes your face look attractive.

  40. Lucky Charm says:

Umm, Rush? Even if any Democrats were to try to make that link, YOU ALREADY DID! You just don’t see the irony of your statement, do you? Then again, a lot does get lost on you…

  41. nina says:

    Dumb ass.

  42. ZenB!tch says:

In full-disclosure Bain (Capital) owns Rush Limbaugh. Um… I mean they bought out his employer and in sadder news, killed the LA HQ company Christmas party.

I worked for Clear Channel right out of college and I still have friends there. I feel sorry for them having another Rushmergency.

  43. ZenB!tch says:

Does that pig even know how movies are made?

How could Nolan be so prescient? When did he write it? It was filmed a year ago. It would be totally funny if he did it on purpose; but if Nolan pulled that one off, he would be the world’s first real psychic because no one else was thinking about Bain or Mitt Romney in 2010.

  44. Chris says:

“More people are concerned about whatever I might have said or didn’t say about a Batman villain than they are about their own jobs,” continued Limbaugh.

Nice try a-hole. Now back to you and your stupid comments.

  45. dahlianoir says:

There’s been a massive shooting at a Batman premiere in Denver, I hope our celebitches are safe and my thoughs to the victims’ families. A SHOOTING girls, for a MOVIE!

  46. sup says:

what an idiot. tha character Bane already existed.

  47. LadidahBaby says:

Well, I hope the big fat idiot is happy now. 14 dead and 50+ injured when a gunman opened fire inside a Colorado movie theater at a midnight opening of this film. Mostly teens and twenty-somethings, but also a 6 year old girl shot in the back. Parents who dropped their teens off are waiting to see if their kids are dead. Go, Rush. No, seriously, GO, leave–your time as a public figure has expired.

  48. LadidahBaby says:

    Youngest victim: 3 months old.

  49. Gigohead says:

Shiver to think that Fat mouth Limbaugh may have sparked fire in the brains of a sick young man who went ahead and shot and killed 12 so far. All I hear is references to Bain.

  50. Rudy F. LaGala says:

Rush, Get a dictionary! I’m a chemist not an English major and I know the definition of BANE, spelled as I just did. I’m not a fan but I’m sure the screenwriters had this proper meaning of the word in mind when they chose the name. It’s quite imaginative and original. I’ve never seen or heard of a fictional villain with that name. Look it up!

  51. telesma says:

The Bane character first appeared in 1993, so, umn, no. Not a liberal conspiracy to get Mitt. Mitt is doing quite well at looking like an evil comic book villain all on his own.

  52. Katherine Roosevelt says:

    Definition of BANE

    1

aobsolete: killer, slayer b: poison c: death, destruction d: woe

    2

: a source of harm or ruin : curse

    Origin of BANE

Middle English, from Old English bana; akin to Old High German bano death
First Known Use: before 12th century
Good choice of name for a villian!

  53. films says:
