Mariah Carey named as the newest ‘American Idol’ judge: good choice?

Most of us are guilty of referring to Jennifer Lopez as a “diva” at various times, although I think that descriptor is a bit unfair in J.Lo’s case. You rarely hear about her being late or acting in an unprofessional manner, although it’s always ALL ABOUT J.LO whenever she’s around. Well, The J.Lo Show is over on American Idol, with Jennifer and Steven Tyler both leaving the show a few weeks ago. Since they announced their departures, AI producers seem to be looking at everybody from Mary J. Blige to Miley Cyrus to Katy Perry to Kanye West. And of course, Mariah Carey. Well, Mariah was officially announced as the newest judge yesterday! THE MARIAH SHOW is upon us.

Out with the old and in with the new! As Us Weekly first reported July 12, Mariah Carey was in talks to become a judge on the twelfth season of American Idol — and now it’s a done deal. “As a singer, songwriter and producer, it’s going to be fun and rewarding to help find new talent and give back with American Idol,” the five-time Grammy Award winner said in a statement July 23.

“I’m currently in the studio working on my new album and its first single, ‘Triumphant,’ which will be out early next month,” Carey added. “I can’t wait to channel my creative energy as a part of this show which is a massive global phenomenon.”

American Idol creator and executive producer Simon Fuller, 52, says he is “proud to have one of the world’s greatest-ever female singers join our show. Mariah defines the word ‘Idol’ and will inspire every singer that has the honor of performing in front of her.”

Carey’s hiring comes just weeks after Jennifer Lopez, 42, and Steven Tyler, 64, announced their departures from the FOX smash. Judge Randy Jackson, 56, is expected to return for Season 12; he has been with the show since its inception in 2002.

“Randy has been working with Mariah for a long long time and is her co-manager,” Kevin Reilly, president of entertainment for FOX, said. “Randy was very instrumental in doing this deal.”

Carey served as a guest mentor during Season 7 of American Idol, with David Cook covering her hit “Always Be My Baby,” Jason Castro singing her smash “I Don’t Wanna Cry” and Carly Smithson eliciting applause for her rendition of “Without You.”

Previous American Idol judges include Simon Cowell, 52, Paula Abdul, 50, Kara DioGuardi, 41, and Ellen DeGeneres, 54. “I am so excited to be on Idol,” Carey tells Us. “I can’t wait to get started!”

When I wrote about the possible replacements last week, this is what I said: “You know Mariah would be a glorious trainwreck and people would simply tune in to see THE MARIAH SHOW, also known as American Idol WITH MARIAH CAREY… And Kanye… well, if Mariah is on board, then I really hope and pray that Kanye signs on too. Because that would be MAGIC!! Kanye + Mariah = MUST SEE TV.” I stand by that – what if what if what if American Idol hired Kanye West next and Kanye and Mariah had to sit next to each other and try to out-crazy, out-diva, out-ego each other for months at a time? It really would be AMAZING.

Oh, and the anti-Mariah contingent was already out within minutes of this announcement – TMZ reported that when Mariah was a guest mentor in 2008, she was an unmitigated “nightmare”. Sources say Mariah “was incredibly late for her shoot at the Beverly Hills Hotel, ‘not very nice at all,’ and ridiculously nitpicky about tiny details.” Tiny details like her lighting, her own special wind machine (which she won’t share, even for Kanye), the camera angles, her chair, her makeup, her hair, being contractually allowed to break into song at a moment’s notice, etc, etc. You know the trainwreck is coming. It really will be an epic experience. Simon Fuller is going to rue the day.

PS… We didn’t talk about money, did we? Nick told people last week that if they wanted Mariah, they were going to have to bring the $$$$. TMZ says Mariah’s first year contract is worth $12 million, but I’ve heard other (higher) figures too. Also: it was an either/or thing with Mariah and Jennifer Lopez – producers were interested in Mariah, but they didn’t pursue her until J.Lo stepped away.

Does anyone really watch this show anymore? I quit watching 2 seasons ago.

  2. paola says:

I’m sure JLo will throw a fit because Mariah was given 18 millions when she was denied a raise of 1m to stay in the show. But considering Mariah being a singer, songwriter, producer and one of the most iconic voices of the past 20 years i’d rather see her on the show more than JLo. Mariah is a hell of a diva with talent while JLo in my opinion is just what industry wants us to perceive right: flashy costumes, curvy ass, little talent and a lot of hammering backchat music with plenty of juicy gossip, she is just the result of the music industry, just like Rihanna or Katy Perry: loads of gossip but very little talent.

      Agree 100%

      Also agree

      +1000 at finally a profetional!

    • erika says:

is she really worth 18million? celebrities are the ONLY ones that have not been effected by the recession, big time celebs…it’s sad, really sad that society, hollywood execs, pay that but i know, i get it. sad.

…i would say a crime scene clean up person or, firemen….but no, boom boom titties, vaccum for a brain and a helium talking voice, that’s priceless

    • deehunny says:

great point. although i do love jlo (her fashion, the dancing, her gossip, etc.) there is no denying that mariah has more singing talent in her pinky comparatively. you’re also right about riri… many of these women that are popular today doing dance tracks have really weak voices

  3. Bondon says:

Yes! This is what great TV is all about. I just wish I were in the US to watch this, guess I’ll have to make do with bits and pieces on youtube.

  4. Sandy says:

Mariah on TV – this is going to be epic 🙂

  5. brin says:

I think she will be good tv and a good judge.

  6. marie says:

I dunno if I’ll watch it or not, but I did hear that AI gave Mariah the amount that J-Lo wanted to stay, 17-18 mil?

  7. Nev says:

    hahahaha

    love Mimi!

  8. Holl says:

I love mimi. She’s glorious and crazy and hilarious.

I wish though, celebrities as rich as Mariah would donate their salaries from shows like this to charity. God knows Mariah has more than a couple hundred million in her accounts and could donate without feeling it.

  9. Maritza says:

They will regret not keeping Jlo, Mariah will be a nightmare to work with, the woman is full of herself. Remember the time she was carried to her seat.

  10. Vivian says:

Going to be an epic season of entertainment indeed!

  11. Bite me aka aniston says:

Someone with actual singing talent judging a singing competition, what a novel idea

  12. Lily says:

Isn’t funny that she was very negative about all these reality shows not so long time ago and now… there you go… she is part one of it. I don’t like her. She stuck in the ’90 so hard.

  13. Naye in VA says:

id crap my pants if i had to sing in front of Mariah Carey. IJS.

  14. Dredz says:

Not a good choice, a GREAT choice. She has better singing talent than that unbearable Lopez.

  15. Jennifer says:

Great choice! She’s an extremely talented and successful singer and songwriter. Not to mention she’s beautiful!

  16. TheOneAndOnly says:

Right on paoloa holl and lily but I stopped watching ai about 4 years ago and this won’t induce me to tune in.

  17. Scarlet Vixen says:

Is it just me or are she and Kathie Lee Gifford morphing into the same person?

  18. kellyinseattle says:

I thought she and goofball would be divorced by now, but more power to them!

  19. ZenB!tch says:

For me, this show was done when Simon left so I won’t watch but I had to come here to comment on this:

Goodness her face is sagging in that last photo.

  20. Hautie says:

That last photo… just gives me life!

I am surprise Mariah has not purchased the exclusive rights to it… and BURNED the original picture. hahaha!

For me, it is obvious Idol was stringing Lopez along.

They had no intentions of resigning her. And was waiting to see what kind of crazy demands Mariah would have… if it was too much. Then they would have resigned Lopez.

And I agree. Idol will end up regretting this decision. Mariah being on time does not happen. She gets there when she gets good and ready. And not a moment sooner.

  21. floretta50 says:

Finally they have somebody who is worth the money. I will watch for the first time in years. Idol is finally on the right path judges that know music not just window dressing and fluff like Jlo that move was so comical.

  22. mln89 says:

unlike j.lo, mariah can actually sing and is the real deal when it comes the music industry, and having multiple number 1 albums and singles. i think this gives ai credibility it never had. (especially with paula abdul, who was the 80’s version of j.lo. great dancing ability, no singing talent at all.) i might actually watch.

  23. Kosmos says:

Okay, let me first say that I LOVE Mariah…even though I haven’t really watched AI for a while, I may tune in again because Mariah is one of my all time favorite female singers. Yes, she’s a bit of a diva, but I LOVE her singing and she’s amazingly talented. While JLo is NOT very talented overall, so I never wanted JLo on the show to begin with, gag. Mariah is the real deal, folks…..
