Lucy Hale talks about her eating disorder: “I would go days without eating”

Before today, I wouldn’t have been able to pick Lucy Hale out of a line-up. I’d heard her name before, but I’d never had that gossip-defining moment of seeing her on a red carpet and saying, “Ah, yes. Lucy Hale.” Hale seems to have gone from part-time teen actor to now full-time adult actress. And yes, she IS an adult. At first I was like “Jeez, why do they put tweens on the cover of Cosmopolitan these days?” Lucy Hale is 23 years old. She has a Selena Gomez-esque face, right? She could easily pass for 14. Lucy is on the show Pretty Little Liars, which I’ve never watched ever. She was also in Scream 4, which I’ve seen, so I have a vague idea of what she’s like on screen. Not all that memorable? Yeah.

Anyway, Lucy covers the new issue of Cosmo, and in the interview, Lucy talks for the first time about her eating disorder:

Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale is ready to tell the truth.

In the September issue of Cosmopolitan, the 5-foot-2 actress admits to sometimes starving herself in the past. “I’ve never really talked about this, but I would go days without eating,” Hale reveals. “Or maybe I’d have some fruit and then go to the gym for three hours.”

“I knew I had a problem,” the Tennessee native adds. “It was a gradual process but I changed myself.”

Hale — who exposes her bare midriff on the magazine’s cover — also speaks candidly about the first time she met her boyfriend, Amazing Spider-Man actor Chris Zylka, 27.

“I was like, ‘Holy crap! You’re gorgeous!” Hale, 23, recalls. “It was like no one else was there. We couldn’t stop talking.”

Well, it’s good that she recognized she had a problem and worked to phase out that problem. She makes it sound like a phase that she went through… which might be the truth, you know? I knew a lot of girls (when I was a teenager) who had eating disorders, but they basically “outgrew” them. I’m not trying to over-simplify a serious condition – I’m only saying that not everyone is the same, and not every eating disorder is the same, and people work through their stuff in different ways. Plus, I still don’t know who this girl is, so I’m giving her the benefit of the doubt and taking her word for it that she’s dealt with her issues.

Here are some photos of Lucy and Chris Zylka… he’s cute in a “I would have crushed on him when I was 14” way. I can’t believe he’s 27 years old. Dude looks 16 years old. Additionally, yes, I am an old fart. WHIPPERSNAPPERS!!

I hate to admit it but I really, really like Pretty Little Liars. Also, this article makes me think of this blind:

      thought the same thing..

    • JenD says:

I like the show, too. That blind sounds like the PLL actresses, to me.

Lucy Hale was a co-star on another show a couple years before PLL debuted. That show only had one season. Can’t remember the name of it, but Joanna Garcia was the star of it.

    • Roma says:

As I”m 32 my boyfriend makes fun of me constantly, but I love Pretty Little Liars. I won’t watch for a season and then watch all the episodes in one weekend in my bed. Guilty pleasure!

    • Talie says:

Yeah, that blind was def. Shay, Lucy, Troian. The show is really good though, sort of like The Vampire Diaries…better than the average “teen” episodic.

    • Lee says:

Honestly, I used to consider Pretty Little Liars a guilty pleasure, but now I am completely open and shameless about my PLL love. I don’t care that I’m a married adult lady; I find that campy, murder-mystery of a teen drama so entertaining.

  2. Nessa says:

TBH, I don’t even know who this girl is.

    • JenD says:

Her show is on ABC Family. She’s also recently starred in an ABC Family movie.

Ifve only just got into blind & am loving it!! I like that she is real in this interview. She looks like a healthy young women now. I hope it’s true???

  3. lucy2 says:

Good for her if she overcame it.
Unfortunately I think those photoshopped Cosmo covers only perpetuate that sort of thing, but maybe her talking about it will balance it out.
She and her boyfriend look like they’re going to the junior prom, not 23 and 27!

    • yo momma says:

indeed i agree-its like saying “ohh an eating disorder will give you this body”-when in fact a lot of people forget it can KILL you. but then this is cosmo we are talking about-they are always full of contradictions.

  4. Aria says:

    Beautiful girl!

  5. LittleDeadGirl says:

Wow, Cosmopolitan is amazing. They have her talking a little about her eating disorder and then photograph her with a very skinny body. Hipocracy to the 10th degree. It’s like your drug dealer driving you to an AA meeting and then waiting for you outside to sell you more drugs.

I’m sorry but any girl who sees the image is only gonna think (so if I eat a piece of fruit and work out for three hours I’ll have that stomach and that life … sold!)

    • tooey says:

I’ve stopped reading “women’s” magazines all together. Lose 20 pounds fast! 25 Fabulous chocolate recipes! Healthy bodies! (All size 2). It’s just crazy and it makes me crazy so I just swore off completely.

    • yo momma says:

      + 1000

  6. Isa says:

Wow I thought she was one of those naturally petite women. I watch PLL and I love it! Especially Mr. Fitz!!! Growl!
I wish they were together in real life because they make such a cuter couple than the one she’s in with that dude. But I have suspicions Mr. Fitz is gay. 🙁

  7. SmokeyBlues says:

I agree that for some girls it’s a stage, because it was for me. I had and still have body issues, but I stopped the starvation behavior that I was obsessed with in High School on my own. I consider myself very lucky because I know that for those that have a full blown eating disorder it is absolute hell to live with.

  8. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

I really like this girl and her show. It actually has a pretty large following of teens and young adults, so I am glad that she is shedding light that she had the pretty common issue of an eating disorder and talked about getting through it. With the pressure on girls/young women today, messages like this from people like her should be praised…assuming they appear to be happy and healthy. Now if Miley was saying this – with her 90lb frame – I’d gag.

  9. INeedANap says:

That up there is a Photoshop disaster, they made her face look to small for her head, especially her mouth. It’s a Selena-Gomez-face on crack!

  10. cmc says:

OOooo her boyfriend is that guy from Secret Circle! I still hate that it was cancelled. Although since I’m the only one that recognized him, I suppose I might have been the only one watching the show 🙂

    • I Choose Me says:

Nope not the only one. I’m sad that show was cancelled too. Right when it was starting to get interesting what with the other Balcoin progeny coming to town.

  11. Xxxx says:

She looks like a mix between khloe kardashian and srlena gomez to me.

  12. TheOneAndOnlyOnly says:

Bad photoshop and sorry don’t know who this generic d-lister is she seems interchangeable with all the others;at least under Helen Gurley Brown cosmo was sexy sleazy fun tongue in cheek with covers featuring the likes of Naomi Campbell, Yasmeen Ghauri, cindy crawford, etc. before photoshop – why has cosmo decided to compete with tiger beat; is that where most of its readers are?

  13. Ben says:

Can anyone please tell me what the blind item linked to in the first comment was about? The link goes nowhere. Thanks.

    • Raquel says:

I think this is the blind item:

[BlindGossip] At an upfronts luncheon, three young television series stars – all female and all thin – were seated with various advertisers and executives.

Star 1 was very friendly and down to earth. She talked about how lucky she was to be a working actress, and made sure to take photos with anyone who asked. She ate her entire lunch, including dessert. Advertisers commented on how healthy and gorgeous she was, and how nice it was to see a girl who would eat and who made everyone at the table so comfortable.

Star 2 initially sat at her table, but was incredibly antsy and jumped up and left every time food was presented. Salad course? “Oops, sorry, I’ve got to take this call.” Entree? “Time to use the ladies room.” Dessert? “I have got to go talk to so and so.” When she was at the table, she just chewed gum and fidgeted while everyone else ate. It was very awkward for the entire table of advertisers and TV execs, several of whom commented that she looks like she has an eating disorder.

Star 3 kept discussing her “craft” when speaking with the advertisers, several of whom rolled their eyes. “She’s on a TV show popular with teens for God’s sake, not an Oscar-worthy film” one of them told us. She also made it known she doesn’t believe in being a spokesperson for “crap to be sold.” Keep in mind that she said this to a table full of advertisers. Guess she doesn’t realize that not everyone is lucky enough to have a rich Daddy in the business. Oh, and she ate absolutely nothing, although she did once pick up a lettuce leaf and examine it.

At the last picture: I will never understand what kids are wearing these days, and I’m only 24.

  15. Ally says:

The color block dress would look much better, minus the wrinkles in the bottom part. Cute girl.

  16. apsutter says:

Awww…she played Robin’s little sister on How I Met Your Mother. She looks like she could be Danica McKellars little sis.
