Robert Pattinson: ‘I’ve never been interested in trying to sell my personal life’

Robert Pattinson appeared on Good Morning America live this morning. The interview was conducted by George Stephanopoulos, who… I mean, he thinks of himself as a serious journalist and newsman and that’s fine. But can I just yell about something for a second? This is how George couched his “personal question” to Robert: “Everybody just wants to know: how are you doing? What do you want your fans to know about what’s going on in your personal life?” Either have the balls to ask – flat-out, straight-out – about an actor’s personal life, or simply don’t do it. Don’t ask some variation of, “People are worried about you. What would you like your fans to know?” That’s cloying, cheap and a journalistic cop-out. Have the nerve to ask, “So, did you break up with Kristen? How do you feel about everything right now?” Of course Rob could shut it down, and of course he could say the dreaded “no comment”. But it’s so much more honest than the other BS.

Anyway, this is Rob’s first “real interview” because the Jon Stewart thing on Monday didn’t really count. Jon Stewart didn’t ask any penetrating questions about what Rob’s fans should know about his personal life (UGH), so the task fell to George. George gave Rob a box of cereal (Cinnamon Toast Crunch, apparently his favorite), and when George asked the awful question, Rob’s reply was to charmingly stammer, “They seem pretty excited about . . .kind of whatever. Um, I’d like my fans to know that Cinnamon Toast Crunch is just 130 calories [a serving!]. Pretty much everything that comes out of my mouth is irrelevant. You go into it to do movies. I’ve never been interested in trying to sell my personal life. The reason why you go onto TV is to promote movies.” Here’s the video:

“I’ve never been interested in trying to sell my personal life”? Hm. Are we still playing that game? I guess so. Summit definitely tried (and succeeded) in selling Robert and Kristen’s personal life together to sell the Twilight franchise, but for the rest of it… maybe we’re dealing in technicalities and wordplay as to what constitutes “selling one’s personal life.” I’m not sure how I feel about the WAY Rob dodged the questions about his personal life, but I will say that at this point, he really doesn’t owe “his fans” or the “journalists” anything. I don’t take issue with the fact the dodged the questions, or that he doesn’t think his fans “deserve” some cohesive statement on where things stand with Kristen. It’s fine, y’all. But dear God, is the Breaking Dawn Part II publicity tour going to be awkward or what? That sh-t’s going to be epic.

Epic indeed! Oh & what a shit interviewer. It was just uncomfortable all round.

    • Chicagogurl17 says:

My theory is still that they will split them up for the tour (one in london, one is paris, one of them in LA, the other in NYC). I doubt they will both be at every premiere/party. Don’t you kind of feel bad for the supporting cast like Taylor, Ashley and Nikki?

      • Liv says:

No, I don’t. Especially Nikki will be laughing hard…and I guess a few of the others are spiteful too, because Kristen and Robert stole their spotlight(I don’t think so, but you know, Hollywood is like a shark pool).

  2. RHONYC says:

“Cinnamon Toast Crunch is just 130 calories [a serving!]”.

    haha! classic. 😆

    • LB says:

That is a classic RP interview answer lol. Love it.

I don’t know what I expected in his response but it doesn’t seem like he has the answers himself yet. I think he is still figuring it all out and timing wise, it sucks because he still has to promote this movie.

Plus the question was phrased in a way that allowed such an evasive response. What does he want fans to know? Probably nothing lol.

  3. Happymom says:

By then he (and those crazy Twilight fans) will have had more time to process it-and he’ll have a more pat answer ready to trot out.

  4. marie says:

Have the balls to ask the question, otherwise leave it alone. What was he supposed to say? It was all around awkward.. And yes, the BD2 promotional tour will be Awkwardly Epic..

Can I just say, I used to love me some Cinnamon Toast Crunch, but I tried to eat it the other day and wasn’t feelin it. Fruity Peebles is where it’s at!!

  5. Julie says:

oh yeah i hate those cheap questions too. moreover they are trying to put pressure on the people they are asking, you know all those people out there, do you wanna disappoint them? they wanna know, you better tell them.
    thats really disgusting.

  6. tooey says:

Hey, I give him props for even showing up to do his promotional duties while all this is going on. Didn’t Kristen cancel her promotional appearances?

  7. Izzy says:

Once again, handling awkward interview moments with grace and class. Still couldn’t care less about Twilight, but I’m liking Robert Pattinson more and more each day.

    • Helvetica says:

Agreed. I’m liking him more and more with each interview. I was never a fan of his really until now. He is coming across as so classy and has good character.

  8. nina says:

I bet he just wanted to punch the dude in the nads – how are you doing? That’s so lame. When Jon asked if he was okay and he was worried about him, he did it like a concerned Jewish grandma. George just comes off like dork.

  9. IzzyB says:

I cringed so hard I got face cramp.

He handled it as well as can be expected.

  10. Helvetica says:

Good for him. I think it’s great he’s getting out there and not hiding in seclusion like some people may. He doesn’t owe anyone anything with regards to his personal life. It must be so awkward to have those questions asked. Robert, you can and will do so much better.

  11. Len says:

Okay, now I’m starting to feel like maybe he needs to be serious for just a second. Just say: I don’t want to talk about my personal life. He is making this more awkard than it needs to be with all this stuttering.

  12. Reece says:

I’m disappointed!!! Apple Jacks are so much better! Chocolate Cheerios! 😉

The BD promo will be oh so gloriously awkward! He’s seriously dealing in semantics if he’s gonna pretend his relationship wasn’t part (most) of the marketing of that franchise. Not playing the game but going along with it is essentially the same. I like that he didn’t answer it though. This seems to be giving Robert the chance to be “himself” as opposed to a cog in a machine. That’s gotta be uplifting.

  13. mewmow says:

For once an actor said what I have always thought. I know he didn’t mean it this way but when he said what he says is irrelevent and they do t.v. to promote movies, my first thought was yes! I hate it when actors try to preach politics or shove their opinions on us. You’re in movies. Period! 🙂

  14. sunmoonstars says:

Then you’re in the wrong line of work, homeboy!

  15. CAM says:

What was George supposed to do instead? Ask him straight up and piss him off? Get an equally evasive (and maybe angry) answer from Rob that also says nothing? And risk not having him back on the show? Yeah, that’s professional…

  16. judyjudy says:

This is what I don’t get…cheating scandal aside…if he says he never got into it to share his personal life everyone is all “Good for him. Classy. ” But when K Stew (or any other actress) says the same thing people freakout and call her an ungrateful, smug bitch . What gives?

    • Shannon1972 says:

Judy, I think the difference is in the delivery. Robert P. smiles, stutters and offers funny (but evasive) answers. Kristen scowls, gives the finger and tells everyone to f-off. Both may be genuine, but I guess it depends on your personality preference.

  17. Mar1 says:

Robert should have told Summit on the first movie that he was not interested in selling his personal life but he didn’t. He and Kristen allowed Summit to sell that phoney relationship to the media until it got out of hand with the fans.

    • Anname says:

The whole point of the privacy thing was so Summit would NOT be able to sell the relationship. But their privacy in the relationship was somehow perceived as it being a fake relationship. Your comment perfectly demostrates the ridiculous position they were in. I think they did everything in their power not to use it to sell Twilight.

      • Adeli says:

Anname, your post is made of truth.

Isn’t it ironic that the very thing that they worked so hard at avoiding is exactly what happened. Their relationship, whatever is left of it, is now fully up for media and public consumption, and doubly ironic that it was offered up so spectacularly by Kristen “I would never cheapen my relationships by talking about them” Stewart herself. Oh, the humanity!

      • Diana says:

Anname, I find myself allways agreeing with you. We have very similar ideas when it comes to Rob, and about this it is no different, they were damn if they did and damn if they didn’t.

  18. geekychick says:

….and he ain’t hot like he was yesterday. I’m really fickle, it seems. And the cop-out was annoying to me on JS, also. “How are you? we’re worried….”, come on, be worried about poor people in Syria, that’s a reason for worry! Just ask or don’t ask, don’t go all “momma love” on us, Pattinson ain’t a child!

    • sunmoonstars says:

Jon Stewart is the smarmiest POS I have ever seen, with the exception of Bill Maher who might actually be a demon in disguise. They’re both so punchable I’m impressed you could stand it…but I hear that some people actually like him! Who knew?

  19. Dani says:

WOW can he wear a suit. My god.

  20. Feebee says:

George doesn’t do fluff very well. He’s out of his element and it showed. No offense to him. He should have just asked the damn question and Pattinson should just answer it directly. Even if it’s an “I don’t really know”. The Cinnamon Toast Crunch thing was just bizarre. Jon Stewart and Ben and Jerry’s is one thing but George and cereal is quite another. The GMA producers try waaaay too hard.

  21. Ann says:

I don’t see that he tried to sell his personal life. He never discussed his personal relationship with her, or even confirmed that she was his girlfriend.

And honestly, I’m not sure Summitt sold it either, although they certainly reaped benefits from it. It was the media – and the fans – that sold the relationship, that made it news. The one film that Summit really put the two of them together for promo, mag covers, etc was the first movie. When they were not together. Since then, any promo had Taylor Lautner inserted as well. There have been virtually no interviews, magazine spreads, etc. of just the two of them to promote the movie since then. They even split them up on promo tours, sending him to Europe and her to South America with Lautner, for example. I’ve even heard that the studio was upset when they got together because they were afraid of what would happen if they broke up (ha ha!)

I know a lot of people cling to the staged relationship theory. I just don’t see it. It would have been managed much differently if it was. More lovey dovey photo ops, hand holding, joint interviews for promotion, etc. They wouldn’t have hidden out the way they did.

    • kk says:

my thoughts exactly. and he’s never spoken about the relationship either.

    • Riana says:

      Exactly.

I could see if they were giving interviews for the movie holding hands, giggling and discsig their relationship openly but they went pretty far to distance that film from their actual relationship.

It was the media and the gossip columns/blogs that made such a big deal of them initially. Kristen and Rob weren’t the first couple to hook up while working together but they had the outside push of people investing in their relationship and creating all kinds of stories and fantasies about it. Unlike say…Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.

    • Diana says:

      Ann, you speak the truth.

  22. ernie says:

Am I the only one who is annoyed with his answers? No, I don’t expect him to give any kind of info about his personal life away, but you know he knows he’s going to be asked. And whatever he says you know he thinks about how to answer and generally deal with the probing. So would it kill him to just give a full articulate sentence of “I would rather not talk about it, if you don’t mind?” and be done with it. Instead of that awkward stammering and cereal box and ice creams to hide behind. I don’t find it charming, it’s childish.

And btw, I agree about the interviewer. Just come out and ask directly, and he’ll answer or not, but we’ll get it out of the way.

    • Anname says:

Like his answers or not, he is showing a bit of personality, and not giving the boring expected answer. it’s one of the reasons he is almost always an interesting interview.

  23. Imelda says:

Although I am liking him more and more each day as someone above said, I am fancying him less and less each day too.
He’s just too Hugh Grant-ish in a 4 weddings and a Funeral kinda way.
Foppish thats it thats the word I’m looking for! and tea-pouring way too

  24. katie says:

He is a champion deflector and I think he kind of always has been. He’s so charming in interviews. He’ll be fine!

  25. Diana says:

Exactly as I said, you won’t find him dishing his personal affairs out, just like he has never done it. His answer was pretty typical by his standards and I found it adorable. He is ever the class act.

  26. TTT says:

I am not interested in Pattinson’s private life, life story or anything else. I am not interested in Kristin what’s-her-name either, or any of the other TwiPigs. I can’t believe people watch these movies!

I’d rather watch an interview with Oscar Pistorius or someone like him. I think he is the most fascinating person alive today.
