Kellie Pickler shaves her head in solidarity with her best friend who has breast cancer

I don’t know too much about American Idol alum Kellie Pickler, but I like her from what I’ve heard. She keeps a low profile and doesn’t pimp out her personal life. She’s on Twitter but she’s really low-key with it unlike some other country singers we know about. Anyway I wanted to give Kellie some positive press for shaving her head in solidarity with her good friend, Summer Miller, who has breast cancer at 35. She sent a video in to Good Morning America of the two of them getting their heads shaved ahead of Summer’s first chemotherapy session. (That video is at this link, but it ends at :55.) They’re trying to spread the word about early detection. Here’s a report on this story from E!

Kellie Pickler appeared on Good Morning America today and, in a touching show of bravery and solidarity with her best friend, a breast cancer survivor, buzzed her long blond locks clean off.

Pickler was joined for the momentous occasion by her longtime BFF, childhood friend and “sister” Summer Holt Miller, who was diagnosed with breast cancer in June.

The girls got together in Nashville and jointly went under the razor.

“If this compels even one person to change their mentality toward waiting until the age of 40 for their mammogram, then it will be worth it,” Miller, who underwent a double mastectomy and begins chemotherapy this week, said.
“Cancer does not discriminate,” Pickler said.

Kellie herself tweeted hints about her transformation yesterday and today, writing yesterday (presumably when the taped morning show segment was recorded), “It’s been a great life-changing day.”

“Be sure to watch ‘Good Morning America’ tomorrow morning (Sept 5th). You won’t want to miss this!!! ;)” she added.

[From E! Online]

Check out the video at this link. All Kellie did was send in a segment to GMA while she got her head shaved with her best friend. She didn’t call the paps, she didn’t tweet incessantly about it, she didn’t even do an interview and you know that any of the morning shows especially would have her.

The last we saw of Kellie, she was in Maxim in a “salute to the military.” It wasn’t just a sexy photoshoot for Kellie, she regularly entertains the troops stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan as part of the USO and has been on five tours overseas. Take note, famous chicks who are tweeting bikini photos and going on vacation constantly, there are better ways to spend your time.

What a lovely thing to do. And she’s totally pulling off the look!

    • Chicagogurl17 says:

They both are! What a great friend, most women and celebs for that matter would be to vain.

      • gg says:

omg, these are two very brave women! Amazing. Let me tell you from first hand experience, being bald is NOT EASY in the least. People actually give you dirty looks if you’re hot and don’t feel like covering your head.

What a wonderful show of strength and friendship. I’m blown away by this.

      • womanfromthenorth says:

        She’s great a friend

      • Genevieve says:

@gg… I did the same thing w/ my mom when she was going through chemo 1986-1991. It makes it so much easier to know that you have support and can sort of laugh about it if you’re not the only one.

It grew into my first Pixie. NOT a good look on me, but I’ll ALWAYS be so grateful I could do that with her 🙂

      • gg says:

That is amazing and wonderful, Gen. Such a selfless act. Good for you. I know she appreciated it.

  2. brin says:

    Love Kellie…very sweet girl!

  3. Nilber says:

I have to admit that I am not sure I could do this myself. I admire her and it definitely has made an impact on getting the word out there.
I have always thought she was cute and I like her music. I am jealous on how beautiful she is even with a shaved head. Maybe it is the reason she did it but she is definitely rocking the bald look.
Having went through chemo myself I know the value of having true friends. That experience weeded out many fair weather friends and I found out who my true friends were.

  4. Darlene says:

She looks incredible. Good for her for spreading the word about early detection. My mom got aggressive breast cancer at 41. It can happen early and it can happen fast. (ps. 28 years later, my mom is healthy and awesome!)

  5. CreamSoda says:

Good for her and best wishes to her friend Summer who is dealing with breast cancer. It is great Kellie is there for her and so supportive. Early detection is important. I had breast cancer in my late twenties and am still going strong a decade later so I have confidence that the same will be true for Summer. Positive thoughts to her.

  6. Abby says:

    She’s adorable and sincerely sweet.

  7. TheOriginalKitten says:

I kind of think she looks BETTER with a shaved head. That’s awesome though-definitely a great friend.

    • Erinn says:

I definitely think she should rock a really short haircut after this. It looks awesome. Both of them are gorgeous with shaved heads.

    • Chatcat says:

What a true friend. In for a penny in for a pound! And she should definately do a short sassy haircut for a while beyond this. Not everybody can pull it off but clearly, if she can pull of shaved, she can pull off pixie!

      • gg says:

It takes an agonizingly long time for it to even reach the “intentional hairstyle” stage. This is a big sacrifice to have made. Moves me to tears.

      • OriginalTiffany says:

Yes, it does. My cousin, aunt and grandmother had breast cancer.

I hate cancer. It has robbed me of many family members and I had to watch patients suffer and die.

I HATE CANCER! I pray that I brought some peace to some patients. I always screamed for painkillers for them. Broke my heart so much I retired.

      • gg says:

        CUCK FANCER.

  8. Lisa says:

They look like sisters! Hope it works out for her friend.

  9. MorticiansDoItDeader says:

I love the way she is looking at her friend. You can tell there is real love there (and that this wasn’t just an attention grab for Kelly). Good job Kelly and a speedy recovery to Summer.

    • TheOriginalTiffany says:

      I love her for this.

    • mia girl says:

Agree about the look in her eyes. True friendship is a beautiful thing.

      • Moneypenny424 says:

I totally agree–a complete look of love for her friend. Her friend is blessed to have this type of support right now and I wish her all the best.

THIS is the type of celebrity I can be pleased for my little girl to look up to!

  10. Mirella says:

I don’t really know much about her, but she seems very sweet. I love that she’s doing this for her friend & supporting her. I hope Summer kicks cancer’s ass.

  11. d says:

I agree, I think she looks better (or just as good, different look) with a shaved head. I’m glad she’s doing this and think she’s great. I never liked the criticism about her. The music biz a tough business and she always seemed like a nice person with good energy, so I always wish the best for her. She seems like a very kind woman, which is a lovely quality to have.

  12. MoxyLady007 says:

Look at the love in her eyes as she looks at her friend. I think this was a great thing to do and it makes my heart happy. I am sure her friend feels the same.
Best of luck to her friend dealing with breast cancer.

  13. Me2 says:

This made me cry! And they both look absolutely gorgeous.

  14. MeMe says:

Love you Kellie (crying). I have relative that passed three years ago. When she was oing through chemo, I shaved my head as well. After three years I have decided let my hair grow back. What you have done does not surprise on bit. I have been a fan of yours since AI, your are just so sweet and down to earth. God Bless your friend and you.

  15. ronnie says:

This is BRAVE.I would be so terrified but she is rocking the bald head

  16. bub says:

Wow, that is awesome! Much respect.

  17. j.eyre says:

Lovely girls, lovely act of friendship. Best of luck to both of them. I hope Summer returns to health soon.

  18. abby says:

I have always just adored Kellie but this has taken her to a whole other level for me. just the sweetest, most selfless act one can do! says SO SO SO much about her. I will start buying her music for sure. and she looks hella cute like this!

  19. Gine says:

Aw, that’s so sweet. And yeah, she really looks good with a shaved head! I could definitely NOT pull that look off.

  20. hmm says:

Anyone else getting a little Jake Gyllenhaal from the top pic? LOL

  21. marie says:

we should all be so lucky to have a friend like her. good on them for getting the word out, mad respect and good luck to her friend..

  22. Kasey says:

This is sweet and a bonus for both of them that they look gorgeous with shaved heads! I hope this really does highlight the issue and promote preventative care.

  23. KellyinSeattle says:

I agree, it’s a great thing in the way of supporting her friend, and they both look great….I know people say that a woman’s hair is her crown of glory (barf), but some women look better with really short hair, me included.

  24. Kelly F says:

Usually when someone from my home state of NC is on the national news, it’s cringe-worthy….but this story is awesome! May we all aspire to be this type of friend when people need it.

  25. Tara says:

I am 35, was diagnosed with stage 3 aggressive breast cancer in July of this year, and I too rock the baldness! It’s not the worst thing, losing your hair or breasts. I just work on remembering that my femininity is mental, not physical.

  26. Moi says:

So sweet, what a great way to bring attention to early detection.

  27. Eleonor says:

I don’t know who she is, but this is a very beautiful thing to do.

  28. *Roxy* says:

My grandmother got cancer at 60 and she lived for 30 years. Mom had breast tumor. Early detection can save lives.

  29. Rita says:

Kellie is such a great country gal. Love her and I think they both look surprisingly lovely without their hair. Might have to try that.

  30. mel says:

    How incredibly sweet!!!

  31. The Original Mia says:

I did the same with my Mom.

  32. Miz Misanthrope says:

I shaved my hair off with my grandfather when he was undergoing chemo…and I have to say for those saying they’d be scared to do it…don’t be. It was insanely liberating in my opinion. Like shedding all the negative and having a fresh new start with things. Plus have to admit it was rather nice not to have to spend an hour blow drying and straightening my mop.

So kudos to Kellie for being a real friend-there’s not enough of them out there.

  33. effy says:

    It looks great on her.
    they can pass for twins.

  34. Pollo says:

Oh my goodness, is kelli pickler the same as this person?

    • Minty says:

I watched that episode when it was first broadcast on TV. I remember thinking, “Is she for real? Is she that ignorant? Geography should be mandatory in high school.”

She did look foolish on that show, but kudos to Kellie for supporting Summer and the troops. She really is a true caring friend. Best wishes to both of them.

  35. Gisele says:

Nice to see a celebrity with such sincere intentions, unlike other country singers who shall remain nameless. They both look absolutely beautiful and the way they look at each other with such love brings me to tears. Cancer, early stage or not, is no easy fight and it sure helps to have a friend like that in your corner.

  36. Green_Eyes says:

What a beautiful thing to do… Brought tears to my eyes and she just got a new fan.

  37. Memphis says:

That’s true friendship! And they both look beautiful!

  38. mln89 says:

she’s always come of as incredibly stupid and that irritates me, but this is very sweet and a great show of solidarity. i don’t know if i would even shave my head for a family member. good on her, and her friend is lucky to have such a loyal (albeit dumb) person in her life.

  39. HappyJoyJoy says:

This warmed my heart! I love positive stories about people who really just do their job and keep their dirty laundry out of the public’s view. They’re very lucky to have each other! Way to go, Kellie!

  40. Natalina says:

    GO KELLIE!!!!

  41. skuddles says:

They both look great! Very sweet of Kelly to support her friend like that – good for her.

  42. islandwalker says:

They both look beautiful. That is a true friend. Love the way she looks at her friend. I hope Summer beats the cancer.

  43. NaomiCampbellsPhone says:

Go Kellie! If you’ve never heard of Kellie Pickler at the very least watch all her appearances on Ellen, they’re so funny I want Ellen to give her a weekly segment!

  44. Darth says:

I always loved Kellie, even though I’m not a country fan, and always believed her sweetness was real when others were saying it was an act to look cute & dumb. Lost an aunt myself to breast cancer at the young age of 40. Here’s hoping for a full recovery and many years of good health for her friend! And kudos to Kellie for being so selfless! <3

  45. beclove says:

    Go Kellie. NC loves you!

  46. HillbillyintheCorner says:

Just a sweet and good girl…..
.she is genuinely a good old North Carolina girl…
that is a act of love …
Thank You Kelly , for reminding people that real woman are and act….
Best of love and luck to Summer….

  47. dh says:

they look good bald– not an easy look but they rock it. They will look even better in a couple of years when its long again~

  48. Lake Mom says:

Proof there are celebrities who have a heart and aren’t full of themselves. WTG, Kellie!

  49. Knew there was a reason I liked that girl. What a wonderful friend and human being.

  50. sunshine says:

That’s very sweet of her, but she looks like Jake Gyllenhaal in that movie where he was a soldier, can’t remember the name. Only difference is she’s wearing more makeup!

  51. Emma says:

I am so moved by Kellie Pickler’s show of support for her friend! It’s a horrible disease and the more supporters you have the better recovery goes. The rising number of patients suffering from this terrible disease is just alarming and the least we can do is to support the organizations whose members are working hard every day to relieve the sufferings of those patients and raise awareness all around the country. This weekend is a perfect opportunity for all Torontonians to participate in the event called the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers taking place in our city. It’s one of the most important events of this month and I think all of us should show our support to those who really need it.
