Edie Falco criticized for strapping daughter in front on scooter: unsafe or no biggie?

When I first saw these photos I was pretty shocked that Edie would put a kid on a motorcycle in front of her like that, and the girl is only wearing a bicycle helmet! Edie’s daughter Mercy, 5, is actually riding with her mom on an electric scooter that only goes 20 mph. So this is a much different scenario. Edie and her daughter were seen out in Tribeca, New York, on a Flyky electric bike. (The bike’s styling makes it look like a motorcycle, but it’s not.) I did a little research and found these scooters can be pedaled like bicycles, although most riders opt to use the electricity. So this may be similar to riding with a child on a bicycle, but a representative from the Motorcycle Safety says it’s a gray area. Here’s more, thanks to Radar:

The mom-of-two was snapped out and about in the Big Apple on the bike earlier this week with five-year-old Macy strapped to her body, and RadarOnline.com has the hair raising photos.

Even though Edie looks like she’s wearing a proper motorcycle helmet herself, her daughter just has plastic bicycle headgear on.

From the pictures it also appears Macy is tied to her mother with a brown karate strap – not an actual seatbelt.

According to the Motorcycle Safety Foundation, technically Edie isn’t breaking any laws since it’s not actually a motorcycle, but the pictures would still concern most parents, the organization said.

“Since the bike has an engine under 750 watts it’s an e-bike, and so she is not breaking any laws that we can see,” a spokesperson tells RadarOnline.com exclusively. “It’s a bit of a grey area.

“But I’m sure if you showed a poll of parents these pictures the majority would be concerned. We are not passing judgment but this does not appear to be the best way to transport a child.

“Whenever anyone gets on a powered two wheel vehicle they have to take responsibility for themselves and for their passenger and make sure the appropriate gear is worn.”

Edie, 49, was riding a FlyKly electric bike, which can hit speeds of up to 20mph.

The Nurse Jackie star and her daughter were whizzing round the Tribeca area of NY and Edie seemed calm and confident as they navigated the busy city roads.

[From Radar]

After reading about this I want to get an electric bike or maybe a scooter! They look really cute and safe. I don’t see an issue with the way that Edie is riding with Mercy, especially since she’s strapped her daughter in with a karate tie and they’re both wearing helmets. It looks like a fun way to travel to me.

Also, here’s Edie at the Emmys in her Stella McCartney dress. As Bedhead mentioned, Edie said it was a really comfortable gown. I thought it was a miss in that the sheer panels at the side made it look like she was wearing a much smaller dress up top, but that’s Stella McCartney for you.

I don’t see the big deal,if that was a traditional bike there wouldn’t be too much fuzz.
BTW here (south France) I’ve seen 10-12 years old kids going on real huge motorbike (with their dads, of course) , for little rides I presume, and that was scaring, to me.

  2. marie says:

I don’t really see a problem with it, but I’m not a parent so that may disqualify me..

  3. Bernie says:

This still seems a hell of a lot safer to me than having a 5-year old in a car going 80 miles per hour on a highway.

  4. MoxyLady007 says:

She loves her daughter and from all appearances is a great mom. Its none of our damn business. The mom judging and over all judging is out of control. I doubt she would ever do anything that she thought was unsafe for her child.

  5. TheOriginalKitten says:

Non-story. 20 MPH, she’s wearing a helmet and is strapped in.

I also want an electric scooter! 😀

  6. aims says:

i remember back in the day, i would sit on my dads lap and drive the car. things are different now. i don’t see what the big deals about. edie is a great mom, her children look happy and healthy. what else can you ask for?

  7. V4Real says:

One reason this could be dangerous is that it’s NYC and NYC drivers especially Taxis sometimes tend to drive a little reclkess. Proceed with caution Edie.

    • LeslieM says:

Totally agree. It’s not what she’s doing but where. I wouldn’t want anyone in my family on a bike in that traffic.

  8. vixo says:

wow, when i first saw the pic on the headline i thought it was blake lively !

  9. L says:

I’ve seen people rolling around town on these with younger kids who weren’t wearing any helmet at all. So yea, non-story to me. Now in the lap of a car driver or a car with no chair? That’s a big deal.

My own personal pet peeve are the families who bicycle around here where all the kids are wearing helmets, but not mom and dad. Because that’s a great way to model safety for your kids. (I work part time in a bicycle shop and I’ve just heard to many horrible stories from kids/adults. Wear a helmet!)

    • Joanna says:

my brother wasn’t wearing a helmet and was hit by a car. he was thrown out on to the highway and fractured his skull. he was unconscious for a couple of days. thankfully no brain damage or broken bones. so yes, people should wear helmets! you never know when something’s going to happen

  10. madpoe says:

    non issue.
where the heck was she suppose to place her on that?

  11. velourazure says:

she’s just teaching her kid to be hard core.

    Nurse Jackie rocks 🙂

  13. Lindsey says:

    Looks like fun actually.

    • Michele says:

It does look like fun but NYC drivers are not known for driving safely, especially the taxis. I almost got my foot run over once by a taxi who ran a red light. Maybe out on an open road with very little traffic, I might consider it. But honestly, I would never take my kid for a ride on a scooter like that in NYC.

      • The Original Tiffany says:

I’ll be living there next year and I think I’m too scared to ride through NYC with my kids. It is so crazy there.

We had a scooter like this in Montreal. Ok if you are on the flats just never try to take it up a hill riding double:)

  14. Venice says:

Is her daughters name Macy or Mercy? She looks perfectly comfortable and seems safe.

  15. DeltaJuliet says:

I don’t know why, but the fact that she is strapped on with a karate belt just cracks me up.

  16. Lem says:

I take no issue with this. Helmets. Shoes. Coats.

I do take issue with the young bimbo idiot girl in my neighborhood who rides an actual motor scooter in a bikini and flip flips with no helmet or glasses or anything other than a bikini. I oft see her scooter parked at the training bed place so, she’s a double dolt .
Also take issue with those foreign families that ride 8 to a 100 cc. That is so dangerous

  17. dorothy says:

I see no problem with it.

  18. Mac says:

Seems foolhardy especially in that environment.

The child isn’t “strapped in” to anything, she’s simply tethered to Edie and if they both went over the handle bars her injuries could be compounded because of it.

  19. lucy2 says:

Failing to see how that’s any more dangerous than a regular bike, so I don’t see a problem. She’s got a help and is strapped, more than some parents do!
I work on a busy street with very little shoulder on the road, and you wouldn’t believe how careless some parents are with their kids out there. And half the time their on their phone and unaware to begin with.

  20. Dee Cee says:

This is safer riding with children than most countries..

  21. Sara says:

Non-story, I live in Bermuda and many people only have scooters as transportation. Kids always ride with their parents on the scooters. Our speed limit is 35 km, very slow.

  22. lower-case deb says:

coming from a country where parents rush and speed on 125cc bikes with their kids (as in more than 3 ppl on a bike) not wearing helmets and AGAINST traffic, i say, this woman is overprotective.

  23. bagladey says:

    Seems fine.

  24. Anner says:

While living in Taiwan I once saw a family of four loaded on a scooter. With a chicken. This is nothing.

  25. Blue says:

I saw a car full of people driving down the street and there was 3 kids sitting in the open trunk so….
It doesn’t look bad to me. Seeing as she lives in NYC I think she is probably extra careful when taking her daughter out with her.

  26. Jenn Bee says:

No biggie. My parents used to take me on long motorcycle rides through out New England with a helmet but I never wore one when I was on a bicycle ever. Of course this was way back in the day and I would take off on my bike early in the morning and not come home until dinner time.

    Give Edie a break.
