Fran Drescher to run for office

Fran Drescher is intending to enter politics, or at least that’s how it seems. While we mostly remember her as the whiny voiced nanny, she’s actually been working fairly tirelessly for new cancer legislation (which she was successful in getting passed by congress) for several years now, following her own bout of uterine cancer in 2000.

“I’ve just been given the appointment of U.S. diplomat,” she said at a party for Le Cirque: A Table in Heaven at that restaurant on December 3. “My title is public diplomacy envoy for women’s health issues, and I just got back from a four-country European tour of duty. I believe next I’ll be sent to the Middle East.”

Also an anti-cancer activist, Drescher has been considering a run for office. “I’ve been very successful in getting a bill passed in Washington,” she said. “I was thinking I’d take the next four years to lay some groundwork, but I’m throwing my hat in the ring.” What else makes her a good candidate? “I’m an authentic and honest person,” she said. “And I think Capitol Hill needs more of that.”

Go for it, I say! If Arnold Swartzenegger can be governor of California, why can’t Fran Drescher enter politics?

The international trip she is referring to is to Hungary, Kosovo and Romania, which she writes about articulately on her blog on her Cancer Schmancer website.

The bills she has campaigned for include provisions for a gynecological cancer awareness campaign, funding for cancer research, better health coverage for breast cancer patients, and cancer education and screening programs.

Given that most of us know someone who has suffered from cancer, I think that Fran could find this a hugely successful platform to enter politics. Unlike Sarah Palin she’s already got the clothes – how fabulous does this woman look for 51?

That voice would be really super to have to hear during a long winded political speech. Politicians are libel to give her anything she wants just to not have to hear her.

Yeah, if Arnold can do it, so can she. I have to admit, I’m surprised by the success and intelligence of Arnold – he’s either got some pretty good advisors, or he’s much smarter than he looks. Either way, he seem to have found a productive niche in politics. Fran’s platform is even stronger than his was (when he ran for office), so I wish her the best of luck.

“She had style, she had flare, she was there. That’s how she became the nanny”

Devilgirl, you do realize that she has a perfectly normal voice, don’t you? The high-pitched whiney one was part of the character she played on the Nanny.

Anyway, I think she would bring something good to the table if she were to go into politics. She is a smart, savvy woman and I think she is very sincere. She’s been through more hell in her lifetime than most of us, and she still comes up smiling. I like her and her attitude…good luck to her.

@RAN — Arnold is actually very shrewd, so it’s not just his advisors. When he was first rising to fame as a bodybuilder and actor, he was studying business management and investing wisely.

Hmm…I remember a Lifetime ‘behind the scenes’ type-show where she talked about her agents telling her to ditch the accent and she worked tirelessly with voice coaches and couldn’t change it. I think her voice is moderately less shrill than The Nanny’s voice, but she still has a really…unique voice…
