Ke$ha covers Vibe mag: “I’m not a train wreck, I’m just having fun.”

Kesha

For the longest time, I avoided listening to Ke$ha because of the annoying money symbol she chose to insert in the middle of her name. Then I gave in and realized she’s not so bad, so I loaded a few of her songs on my iPod shuffle for the gym. Of course, my taste might not be an example for all because I still have a few Rihanna songs that I listen to while running too, and trust me, I hate myself for that one. In comparison, Ke$ha’s not that bad as far as her public persona goes (and she’s pretty funny in interviews) even though she does delve into the raunchy at times and consistently looks better with a make under. Ke$ha is currently preparing to release her second album, and as such, she has become the first white girl to ever cover Vibe magazine. Here are some excerpts from her interview:

Kesha

On indulgences: “I’m not frivolous, I never go shopping. And I love cheap costume jewelry. An underlying theme [of my first album, Animal] was how you can be broke and still have fun. Money doesn’t determine whether I’m happy. But it’s really fun to get light-up shoes.”

On growing up: “I came from a single-parent home, my mom had a nose ring and tattoos, and I’d make my own clothes. People just thought I was a f–king freak.”

She’s not a party girl anymore: “The first record was a celebration of partying and being young, but this record’s a better look at my personality. Whatever, I drink like a champion. But I can also do other stuff. I have a sense of humor about my lyrics. I’m not a train wreck, I’m just having fun.”

On rapping: “The first time someone called me a rapper, I started laughing. I was shocked, and thought it was hilarious. But then, Andre 3000 was telling me how he thinks I’m a good rapper. And Wiz, who’s a good friend of mine, thinks I’m a good rapper? Snoop? It’s crazy and funny to me.”

On her haters: “I’ve really just been doing a lot of thinking about life. The first record, people tore me a new a–hole, and were f–king steady on my balls, and tried to make me feel like I was such a piece of sh-t. I did some soul-searching, and realized nothing I’m doing is negative, it’s actually super positive. You can change peoples’ mood in a three-and-a-half minute song. So why not spread positive energy and be funny? Let [the haters] be miserable. Anyone who wants to have a good time, let’s f–king do this.”

On her spirit journey: “I went swimming with whales in the middle of nowhere, it was like naked boat ladies swimming with baby whales for a week. Then I was rehabilitating baby lions who were like p–sing in my tent, and I was feeding them with a bottle, because their parents orphaned them and they’re trying to rehabilitate these other lions that were kept in captivity.”

She’s authentic: “If I tried to pretend to be something I wasn’t, people would have smelled bullshit a long time ago. I would’ve gotten eaten alive if I tried to be a heel-wearing little princess. It’s just not who I am. I’ve had people try to make me act right, but it’s just not gonna happen. I just can’t not say inappropriate things.”

At least she’s herself instead of trying to embrace some faux “Gangsta goth geisha #thuglife” lifestyle like Rihanna does. Sure, Ke$ha looks a little tacky sometimes, but her music isn’t bad, and she’s not constantly tweeting photos of herself in her underwear, right? By the way, I kind of like that her Twitter handle is “Keshasuxx.” I’m not so sure what to think of her silly, self-described spirit journey, but I’ll let that one slide.

Remember how hated Beck was when he first came out with “Loser”? He got so much shade for being a one-hit wonder and then look at how his career progressed. I always wondered if Ke$ha would turn out the same….

  2. menlisa says:

I think she is genuine you know.
    She doesn’t come off as a try-hard.

  3. samira25 says:

What is Beck doing? I haven’t heard him in years unless he’s great behind the scenes. Kesha has 5 or 6 hit songs so not a one hit wonder. She could be a one album wonder. I don’t think of her as a rapper but as a talker. Personally I think she’s better at singing than the talking/rapping. I feel the same about Nicki Minaj.

    • Mimi says:

He’s still working, collaborating mostly but I think he’s got an album coming out end of this year. I should have phrased it differently, but my point was how Beck was pigeonholed as a passing fancy but instead made an awesome name for himself (and ironically became a critic’s darling). Ke$ha has had commercial success but man has she received a lot of hate for everything from her sound to her style, as she touched on in the interview. Personally, I hope she keeps staying positive and moving forward because I think she’s got a lot of talent to tap into.

    • Babalon says:

@Samira: Beck is viable and has a strong following. However, he’s not a popstar – which is why he’s under your radar.

  4. Sarah says:

That photoshoot is so doctored – in candids she has absolutely no waist.

  5. MoxyLady007 says:

I like her alot. I am not where she is in life anymore – that was a couple years back-but I still really like her music and her general chill attitude. Give me Kesha over a bimbo any day.

  6. Brown says:

For some reason I was always under the impression that she came from money. I’m trying to remember where I heard/read that, though… something about her first album only coming to fruition because her father put it in the works? I could be totally wrong. I don’t listen to her music or know anything about her personal life.

  7. Tarebear says:

Die Young and Your Love is my Drug are my go to running songs for a serious pick up – love her voice and energy!!!

  8. Eleonor says:

I don’t listen her music, but I think she is one of the most interesting singer/artist of her generation, she writes her own songs, and she is capable to write hit for other artists (Britney).

  9. Gracie says:

I thought she was on her third album….

  10. Darlene says:

I just love her and I love her music. VERY excited about her new album.

  11. TheOneAndOnlyOnly says:

    Please this girl is terrible and talentless writing songs for Britney a ten yr. old could do that; as for talent try Esperenza Spalding the real deal but because she’s not a pop tart she’s mostly ignored by the mainstream;
    and Beck is talented there was an article in the Wall Street Journal on how he was collaborating with the producer of Einstein on the Beach;
and please Keisha can sing – no tina turner, babs, selena, Donna Summer, etc were/are singers – but this trick and Minaj can barely lip synch has everyone become tone deaf.
Btw, Keisha has also lied about her background – she doesn’t come from the trailer park.

    • deehunny says:

no i remember reading that her mom also wrote songs for a bunch of famous country singers and she went to cali to live with the person she thought was her dad.

      she’s not trailer park

  12. Christina says:

She looks really pretty in that second pic. Her music makes me happy.

  13. HotPockets says:

I hate that I know this, but this is her 3rd studio album..runs and hides..

    • Happy21 says:

I don’t think the one called “Cannibal” was a full length album…Kind of like Gaga’s “Fame Monster” or whatever it was called.

  14. Shelly says:

Your story about not liking her at first or wanting to listen to her music because of the $ in her name is so funny, because that’s how I felt about her at first, too. She’s grown on me, though. Her music is fun, and she seems like a cool laid back chick. I do wish, still, that she’d remove the $ from her name, lol.

  15. Nilber says:

I did a double take on the first pic. I thought of Gwen Stefani. I think it is the makeup?

    • Leigh says:

      This.
I think this photo shoot is “Gwen Stefani, but slutty instead of edgy”.

    • Hakura says:

I really thought it was Gwen too. It’s the hairstyle, it’s the same color & style Gwen wore when she was promoting her last album.

  16. Emmaa says:

lol everyone are trying to look like lana del rey

    • Minty says:

No, everyone is not trying to look like Lana Del Rey. Lana’s look, particularly her hairstyle, copies the 1960s, which was what Amy Winehouse did. And thanks to the success of Mad Men, the 60s are back with a vengeance. Lana’s not an originator, just another celebrity following the trend of recycling the past.

However, nearly everyone in pop music is manufactured. They sell images to build their “brand”. They use gimmicks to attract attention and generate profit. Ke$ha isn’t much different from Katy Perry or Nicki Minaj. She’s also selling a character.

The sucky thing is that for many of them, that’s all they have instead of real talent. Their music is trendy and “cool” to youth. Their videos are flashy, but ultimately their output is disposable, not timeless.

Then you have a truly talented person like Esperanza Spalding (thanks for mentioning her, TheOneAndOnly) who is ignored because she’s not cramming a manufactured persona down your throat. She’s not following an industry formula. She’s not a creation of the record labels. But then, so much of pop music and idol worship is marketed to teens, who buy into superficial imagery and hype all too easily. They fall for gimmickry (AKA “style”) over substance.

      • TheOneAndOnlyOnly says:

Thanks minty esperanza played in my area last week got excellent reviews from the local papers but very little attention – in contrast, the beibster and madonna will be here later on this year and you know they will be plastered everywhere it’s sad but you said it correctly.

  17. Christian says:

I hate how these people try to get as much negative attention/publicity as possible by wearing god awful clothing and acting like complete a**holes as their public persona. Then after that album sells, they come back with their next release all gussied up talking about how this is the “real me”. It makes their starting point seem so insincere and marketed. Which, you know, it is.

  18. j.eyre says:

I am thinking of wearing the outfit in the last photo to my grandmother’s wedding, what do you think?

  19. Bluedog says:

I don’t like her much because of something she was quoted as saying in Rolling Stone. She said that because male bands and singers had been abusing women and groupies for years, she was now using men for sex, then dumping then off her tour bus when she was satisfied. It was really rank.

  20. dcypher1 says:

I think her music is horrible. Shes the worst out of all the pop tarts. I think anyone who uses autotune in all there songs has no talent. Personality wise shes not as fake as rihanna, k.p. ,or caca who is the worst when it comes to mouth vomit.

  21. Madriani's Girl says:

Girl, you will never be anything but an ugly, untalented, pseudo-enlightened mess. You need to own up and REPRESENT!!!
