Is Jessica Chastain ‘quietly dating’ English heartthrob Tom Hiddleston?

Most of Hollywood spent yesterday sleeping off a really long, alcohol-soaked night and early morning of post-Golden Globes partying. So there’s not a lot of news today, although I am going to get to the Lance Armstrong stuff in a minute. Before I get that, we need to talk about this amazing and unbelievable (as in, I don’t believe it) story from The Daily Mail. The Mail claims… wait for it… that Jessica Chastain has been quietly dating Tom Hiddleston for a few months. Cover your ears to block out the sounds of the high-pitched wailing from Hiddleston’s fan-girls. “NOT HER!” they will scream. “SHE’S NOT GOOD ENOUGH!” they will cry.

She declared a strict ‘no actors’ dating policy this year after a frightening experience with paparazzi. But it seems Jessica Chastain has already broken that vow, and fallen into the arms of War Horse star Tom Hiddleston.

The the flame-haired, porcelain-skinned Hollywood star, who has just been nominated for an Oscar for spy thriller Zero Dark Thirty, is the actor’s new object of affection.

‘Tom is taken with Jess and it’s serious,’ says a friend. ‘Before Christmas she visited Britain to stay with him and meet all his family for the first time.’

The couple certainly appear well suited. While Tom starred in two of last year’s Oscar-nominated films and trained at Rada, Californian-born Jessica — who trained at prestigious New York drama school Juilliard — is equally at home on the red carpet after starring in 2012 Oscar favourites The Help and The Tree Of Life. However, Jessica, 35, and Tom, 31, who previously dated theatre actress Susannah Fielding, are at pains to keep their new union quiet.

Jessica, in particular, is notoriously private about her past lovers.

‘In this business it’s very tough to maintain a relationship because we’re like gypsies — always on the move,’ she has said. ‘And the more you share your relationship with the world the less special it becomes. So I always try to keep my dating life quiet.’

The actress also famously declared all actors off-limits in an interview with InStyle UK published earlier this month, in which she confessed dating an unnamed actor left her ‘freaking out’.

‘I have a rule. No actors,’ she proclaimed. ‘I have dated an actor before, at Juilliard, but since then, I’ve only been on a couple of dates with one and I was so freaked out someone was going to take a picture of us, because they were famous.’

Another reason, she said, was she wanted something to talk about other than movie making and work.

She recalled: ‘I realised I wanted just to be able to hang out with someone… And I didn’t want to talk about the business, first of all. I love movies. But I love talking about them like when I was 15 years old. I’m a film fan, but I don’t want to talk about auditions or what movie I’m gonna do. I find that so boring.’

[From The Mail]

Yeah, I find it hard to believe that Jessica would so vociferously deny dating actors while she is currently and secretly dating an actor. Jessica might be kind of weird/odd about her dating life, but I think she realizes that she can’t go on and on about not dating actors in interviews while she’s “secretly dating” Tom Hiddleston. Or maybe it’s all a game with them? Or maybe it’s BS.

As for the possibility that this is on… I wouldn’t hate them as a couple. She’s a few years older than him – last time anyone got a real number out of anyone on Jessica’s age, I think the claim is that she’s around 35 years old…? And Tom is 31 years old. So, no big difference. And they would look sexy together – sexy and brainy. They would be kind of a pretentious couple, but I could see them having some heat.

I would not mind them at all! Quite the contrary. It would be hot hot hot (and brainy).
    Please, make it happen!!!!! 🙂

    • j.eyre says:

I agree. I would love to see him reaching above his age *wink*.

They would be a beautiful couple and well matched intellectually (and, probably pretentious, as Kaiser mentioned) but I would need to see them interact before I can put them on the heat meter.

But seriously, how long is he going to stay single? I hope he is sowing every oat he has if he is not dating anyone.

      • T.Fanty says:

They would look great together, but I’m not biting, and here’s why:
        A) it’s from the Mail, which isn’t exactly the bastion of truth and integrity,
        B) much as I’m in favor of a little ginger-love (being one myself), I can’t see it. I think our darling little Hiddles is a touch neurotic and a teeny bit fame-whorish, in his own, endearing way, that I think he would struggle with someone whose career is hotter than his.

I am totally excited for the tumblr meltdown, though. My favourite bit about the last one was when one poster wrote “and I’ll bet she’s a FEMINIST, too.” Damn Hiddles and his forward thinking broads.

      • j.eyre says:

Did they really accuse some woman of being a “feminist?!” *Gasp* who are these brazen hussies lobbing such vulgar obscenities at some poor lady?

And to think Hiddles would want an equal on any level – bah! That’s just poppycock!

(No, seriously, did someone use “feminist” as an insult about one of Tom’s girlfriends? That makes me sad, but also giggle in a “what ’til they get a load of me” kind of way)

    • T.Fanty says:

Seriously – they did. It was flipping hilarious. And even across the internet, the tone was dripping in disgust.

      • Amelia says:

That genuinely makes me quite sad!
I just don’t understand why some girls in my age group actively reject the notion of being a feminist because ‘it’s not sexy’.
I recently got into a debate with this idiot who said feminists mentally torture ‘nice guys’ by friendzoning them (yeah, I’ve no idea) and he was rambling on about how evil feminists are, spouting complete and utter nonsense. After twenty minutes of trying to explain to him that was he was describing was *not* feminism and women *should not* be blamed for being sexually assaulted (I was *this* close to giving him a black eye) . . . I gave up and retired to my sofa with toast and Sherlock.

      • j.eyre says:

@T.Fan @Amelia – it makes me sad too. I don’t think the argument you had with your friend is so uncommon these days – well, hopefully the sexual assault blame is.

I am wondering where the discussion on feminism went so wrong that it is now an insult to use because you have a crush on her boyfriend; just as you would “whore”?

Heavens, if I was any less of a feminist, Mr. Rochester wouldn’t want anything to do with me. And yet I wear his last name and the titles of both feminist and housewife – how can that be? I suppose I should stop with all the “thinking.”

I want to add to our t-shirt line “This is what a feminist looks like.”

      • T.Fanty says:

You know, I probably shouldn’t say it was funny, because, ultimately, it is more sad than anything. It was clearly meant as an epithet, and it’s quite shocking to see a generation (I presume they are so very young) sufficiently ignorant as to think that the very mentality that empowers them is nothing more than an object of derision. It also kind of proves the point that Hiddles should stop trying to be a guru to his fans. Clearly, the mob is hearing, but not listening.

  2. su says:

    AWW.

I’m a little scared for her now, those hiddlestoners be EXTRA cray-cray!

  3. Suze says:

Their children will certainly have high foreheads.

  4. evie says:

    she can do better

  5. Mia 4S says:

They’d be a cute couple…but this makes story makes no sense. She’s been on Broadway seven days a week for months and photographed a bunch. When have they been seeing each other? I think they are having a secret romance in someone’s dreams.

  6. lol says:

I adore them both ,but this is obvious bs.

  7. Amelia says:

I think it’s a fairly decent match up but I don’t buy it.
The Daily Fail’s low on news today.

  8. Ranunculus says:

    Now that’s a couple I would ship!

  9. Nina W says:

Photos or it didn’t happen. This sounds like a fantasy match-up made up by the oh-so-reliable DM.

    • carrie says:

in Daily mail, they also wrote she met his parents during Xmas holidays whereas since more one month, she plays in a NY theater so propably ir’s a fantasy

  10. Miss Kiki says:

I would actually really like this pairing however in the lat few days the DM have been even less reliable than usual.

    • T.Fanty says:

On a side note, how fun would it be to work for the daily mail. To just sit around at a desk all day and make up stuff like this?

      • Amelia says:

        Best job ever, probably.
Collectively I think we could crash the Internet in a day.
‘…Sources report that Rob has been ruthlessly dumped by Kristen who has eloped with Jodie Foster to a secret location in Bali and at this very moment in time, the awesomely intelligent chemist Kellan Lutz is making Lutzy fireworks for the wedding reception out of the kindness of his Lutzy heart.’

      • T.Fanty says:

        @Amelia,

If you apply for that job, and promise to write that article, I think we can all promise to write you vigorously enthusiastic letters of reference.

      • EscapedConvent says:

I would love that job. It would be such fun to fan the flames—or would it be to inflame the fans? Maybe both. You could watch people write in with their outrage & their red & green arrows, & sniggle all day long.

  11. Kaye says:

    I approve. They can proceed.

  12. La Calabaza says:

It makes no sense. I can see him going after some curvy brunette but Jessica. It’s hard to believe. I see Jessica with someone older but….Loki? Really?

    • Izzy says:

This was my first reaction as well. Loki prefers busty brunettes – he does seem to have a type.

Tom, I’m EXACTLY what you want. Come get me, I’m waiting…

On another note, the Tumblr meltdown will be EPIC. I will have to rely on you awesome CB ladies to give the deets, because I once made the mistake of looking at a Hiddleston Tumblr and… well, let’s just say I haven’t recovered from the shock (and frankly, a little revulsion). I can’t talk about it. I just can’t. And I think you all know what I mean.

      • La Calabaza says:

Don’t panic! It seems she’s dating Jason Clarke (HOT!)

      • dasha says:

Yes that does seem to be his pref.

      • Izzy says:

Trust me, I will never panic about Hiddleston’s dating life. But the crazy-azz fans who go berserk and write that delusional Twi-hard Loki fanfiction… oh, I need to stop. I just can’t. It was awful. Do not look at the Tumblr, ladies. DO NOT LOOK AT THE TUMBLR.

  13. Talie says:

I do find it fascinating that she has been able to hide so much about her past life and true age despite this new fame. Apparently, she’s had quite the journey, if you believe the blind items, but since most of them come from CDAN…they’re hard to buy into.

  14. Aria says:

I’m confused. I thought she was dating someone related to the fashion business or at least that was what she said. He’s an actor, right?

I don’t particulary dislike them as a couple.

    • Justyna says:

I came here to say the same thing. She admitted few days/weeks? ago that she has a boyfriend and that he is not a celebrity but some people from the fashion industry might know him.

      • Cleo says:

She said it to InStyle UK. Actually, I think she mentioned it after explaining why she would never date an actor again. I guess DM conveniently ignored that part because it wasn’t fitting with their story.

    • ??? says:

You beat me to it. 🙂
      This story is BS.
Either that, or Jessica’s self-proclaimed dating tastes and principles have done a complete 180 almost overnight.

  15. GoodCapon says:

I think they would look good together! But I don’t think any of this is true though.

Did Hiddles’ cray cray fans on Tumblr have their meltdown yet?

    • Lucija says:

I am not familiar with his fans, why are they cray cray? 😀

      • Izzy says:

Lucija, all I can say is, if you are going to do your own Internet investigating into why his fans are cray-cray, you should probably have a glass of wine sitting nearby. It’s really profoundly disturbing, some of it. A LOT of his fans are great. But some of them are just off the rails. They say horrible things about any woman who is even SEEN with Hiddleston, even if they just bumped into each other, or went to a premier together (like poor Sian Clifford, who has been one of his best mates for years).

  16. V4real says:

    Say it isnt so. LOL

    • j.eyre says:

Maybe Jess is a Hiddlestoner and has been “secretly” dating him… in her mind like the rest of us.

      • Eve says:

        “…like the rest of us.”

Speak for yourself, I imaginarily broke up with him ages ago.

      • j.eyre says:

“Speak for yourself” – no darling, if I were speaking for myself I would have said ‘married’ or at the very least ‘banging’

You know, I think Hiddles is still reeling from your leaving him. Poor boy is shattered…

… and we won’t even discuss what you did to Chris Evans with the divorce.

      • V4Real says:

Damn Eve you have no problem moving on. You dumped Chris Evans like a bad habit and you kicked poor Hiddles to the curb as well. Crumby better not even think about messing up on you girl.

I on the other hand have a hard time letting go b/c I still love both of them.

      • Eve says:

        @ J. Eyre:

Really? Married? You’ve been able to stomach his poems, self-help book like tweets, him hugging every fan that asks for a hug? Gooooooooood luck with that! Seriously, he sounds like AnnE Hathaway here:

        http://tomhiddlestunned.tumblr.com/post/40506211836/x

        @ J. Eyre and V4Real:

Ahhh…Evans…still so f*cking hot. Sometimes I look at his pictures, and stare at those obscenely luscious lips…and remember the crazy, filthy, nasty imaginary sex we used to have *SIGH*.

Maybe he’ll win me back when “Snowpiercer” opens (saw some concept art pictures and IT LOOKS AWESOME!).

      • T.Fanty says:

Dating? Married? I just keep these men as my imaginary slaves. Hiddles, more than anyone, is not allowed to talk.

Eve, that Hiddles/Hathaway analogy might have been the final nail in the coffin for my Hiddles-lust. Could you even imagine getting stuck at a table with them?

      • j.eyre says:

I am far more worried about Kay-Doo than twitter.

Since I keep the tweets and tumblr at bay, yes, I still adore him. I know what I signed up for but love clouds all judgement. I harbor fantasies of my head on his lap as he reads Lady’s Chatterley’s Lovers to me.

Good luck to you and Chris. I think Hugh and I may be starting something back up. It’s harder to rekindle the lust when you think so darn much of his wife, though. At least Ewan is rumored to be more ‘flexible’ in his vows.

      • T.Fanty says:

Mmm. “Ewan” and “flexibility” should always be used in conjunction with one another.

And Eve, let me know what I can to facilitate your emotional reconciliation with Mr. Evans. This way, I won’t have to throttle you with one of Cumby’s reindeer socks so clear my path.

        Maybe this can help:

        http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_m-jwq1ds2s

      • Eve says:

        @ T.Fanty:

Nice try…but in that scene they used a double. But I’m afraid you won’t succeed anyway because Cumberbatch is my spirit animal.

About Hiddleston/Hathaway — don’t you get the same vibe from them? You know what I mean: always trying so damn hard to please, overly sensitive, “poetic” quotes during interviews…I think they’d make a great, nauseating match.

      • j.eyre says:

@Eve re: Hiddleston/Hathaway – They could be cloned for all I know but one I want to sit down with a cup of camomile and “there, there” them until they gulp down their pretension and return to their former playful self while the other I want to defile in ways that are illegal in 48 of the United States. I will leave you to speculate which for which.

      • T.Fanty says:

        @ Eve:
I’m intrigued. Is that like a Philip Pullman, daemon thing, or an otter on a leash thing?

And yes, the Hiddleston/Hathaway matchup would be intolerable, to the extreme. I often find myself on twitter wishing for the body of Hiddles with the personality of Simon Pegg. I could get on board with that.

Maybe we could get Miss M, our resident mad scientist (in my head) to facilitate some kind of Frankenhiddles transplant.

      • Miss M says:

@T.Fanty: Even if I had the means to make this new Hiddleston, I don’t think It would pass in the research ethics, 🙂

      • Eve says:

        @ T.Fanty:

Like the ones in Pagan religions. Love him…he’s bitchy and judgemental like myself (these, apparently, are listed by Kaiser as the reasons why they’re a perfect match as well — and I’m like “BITCH, PLEASE!”).

I also LOVE when he tries really hard to be diplomatic but ends up being even more offensive (like when he dissed “Downtown Abbey”). He’s almost like Jim Carrey’s character in “Liar, Liar” (after his son’s birthday wish comes true).

      • T.Fanty says:

        @ Miss Eve,

At the risk of getting all fangirl, me too. I enjoy watching him be interviewed, because there’s always a moment at which he has completely nothing to say, and I always think it’s because he’s wrestling with his inner bitch.

And, to be fair, bitchy as his judgments are, I also agree with pretty much all of them.

      • Eve says:

“…there’s always a moment at which he has completely nothing to say, and I always think it’s because he’s wrestling with his inner bitch.”

Right? I f*cking love that!!! I f*cking love that because it happens with me ALL. THE. TIME.

The only way I can lie is by omission — and I swear that sometimes I even have to press my lips together so I won’t end up hurting someone I like (or get in trouble with someone I don’t but happens to be more powerful than me).

    • Miss M says:

@Eve: Good for you! it was hard for me to move on from Fassy, but I finally did. It was liberating… Tom , better not mess it up with me, :). And if he is with Jessica, I am glad for him because he has some real competition going on (Not disclosing any details). Just saying…

He needs some competition, he was getting to comfy being used to these crazy fangirls of his, giving life advices, etc. He can fool me no more! 🙂

The turn off for me was the girl/actress whom he posted a video on twitter thinking it was so cool because she was dancing in public like it was something inspiring and creative. Little does he know that there is a boy who does those videos as well (ages ago). He goes to apple stores and starts dancing like crazy. I think his name is Trevor Moran, lol

  17. Dorothy#1 says:

    Ginger babies!!!!!

  18. Birdie says:

I always thought she would be perfect for Benedict Cumberbatch! They would make out-of-this-world-pretty children. Well, Tom is cute, too.

    • Eve says:

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!! That bitch (or anyone else, for that matter) better stay away from *MY* alien.

    • Miss M says:

Well, it could all make sense. DIdn’t she say she went on few dates with an actor but was afraid to be recognized? Based on the ridiculous (and crazy) reactions the *Self-proclaimed* Hiddlestoners have, I would not be surprise if they were actually dating quietly and “leaked” this info to see the fans reaction.

      • Ms Kay says:

Hmmm that would be more likely Edgar Ramirez, the 2 went hanging out together (so may be a few dates), and well the rumours followed… That man is one of those human species where 3 little fairies came up above his baby bed and each one of them granted him : beauty, acting talent and brains… Then bitch witch who wasn’t invited to the party came up and said “by the time you are 35 Edgar, you’ll only be married to your charity work and nothing else!” and the prophecy is accurate for now… So as the dumb 3 fairies all granted their wishes already, we’re waiting for a miraculous Princess Charming to come and break the effing spell out of him!

        Le sigh…

  19. lori says:

    They kinda look alike though.

  20. MissMary says:

It was debunked pretty quickly last night–not only is she openly “no actors” in her dating life, she was with her family over the holidays and he was with his *and* hanging out w/Sian and some friends during the Globes so not Chastain’s date. Just Perez Hilton andthe Daily Fail trying to stir the pot.

    • dasha says:

Was he at the Globes with Sian and friends? Love to hear some Hiddles tea if you have it to spill.

  21. madpoe says:

BS of the 1st order. Check please.

  22. linkle says:

Does anyone else get the feeling the “friend” is his publicist?

    • Eve says:

The ever-present Luke Wilson? Could be…

      • linkle says:

It’s pretty good PR, a relative unknown being linked to a potential Oscar winner. It’s certainly caused something of a stir round the interwebs, and not just among his cray cray fandom.

      • Ms Kay says:

Luke Wilson –> Legally Blonde actor playing the lawyer dude who becomes Elle Woods husband, Frat Pack member alongside Ben Stiller, Jack Black and more importantly his brother aka Owen Wilson etc.

Luke Windsor –> the dude who happens to be not linked by any means to the Royal Family, only linked to some talented actors and actresses so yes that publicist indeed.

        😉

      • Eve says:

        *SLAPS FOREHEAD*

Damn, girl, you’re right. I totally mistook one name for the other.

        @ Linkle:

        I meant Luke Windsor. He’s Hiddleston’s ever-present publicist.

Ms Kay, J. Eyre and Miss M…you guys better get used to him, because on the occasion of one of you (or all at the same time) being sexed up by The Hiddles, Windsor will probably be there, assisting — he’ll put on the condom.

      • T.Fanty says:

Oh, Miss Eve. That was so, so wrong (but so, so funny).

      • Miss Jupitero says:

What is it about Luke the Publicist? Do other actors keep their publicists constantly on hand like this? Where does Hiddles get the money to pay for this constant attention? I thought he was “cheap and grateful”?

      • Eve says:

        @ Miss Jupitero:

Luke Windsor is ALWAYS with Hiddleston — dude is like his shadow. If you ever see a picture/footage of Hiddleston and there’s a tall, blondish, boyish looking man standing next to him, watching his every move…that’s him.

It’s creepy. I even saw a picture where Hiddleston seems to be on a date with his then girlfriend Susannah Fielding and the man was there!!!

Oh, and he has tumblr pages dedicated to him as well…

        http://lukewindsorfans.tumblr.com/

EDIT: Here, the picture I wanted to say show. You see the guy in the middle? That’s him:

        http://24.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m9yq993Ghw1rwgw2fo1_500.jpg

This could have been a social gathering, party or maybe a smaller award ceremony but did he really have to bring his publicist to the table where he’s with his girlfriend?

I’m telling you: when Hiddleston is about to have sex, he’s probably the one who puts on the condom on him.

      • T.fanty says:

        @eve,
That last picture kind of makes me laugh, though, because that is exactly what it must be like to go out with Hiddles. He’ll gaze lovingly into his date’s eyes, for about an hour or so, while she wonders if she will have a chance to talk to anyone else/take a sip of her drink/go to the toilet at all during the party.

      • Eve says:

        @ T.Fanty:

Yup, that’s EXACTLY how I picture it, too (which means…it must become exausting at one point).

    • Gloria says:

      YES. And/or hers.

      • Ladytron2000 says:

Oh Eve! That picture you painted! LMAO

And they’ll both be EXTREMELY polite about it during the entire process.

  23. Amanda says:

They would make a cute couple IMO.

  24. lylaooo says:

i dont see them as couple..!! jessica is so white and soo ginger!

    • T.Fanty says:

      There’s nothing wrong with that!

      • lylaooo says:

i know!! i´m a ginger and white! but not that white…sorry i didn’t explain myself! i would see tom with a blonde or brunette..jessica is a beautiful woman

  25. stellalovejoydiver says:

I love Hiddles, even though I can only have him in small doses, but he strikes me as more of a playboy, I don´t think he would go for Jessica, she is too classy, maybe he would hit it and quit it like Tom Hardy if they were working together, but I think he is enjoying being single with his new found fame too much right now.

  26. Miss Jupitero says:

Hahaha! I think the fandom is being Loki’d. 🙂 Tom’s true love is none other than Wendy.

Seriously when would they have dated? She’s being working like a fiend in NYC, and he has been working like a fiend in London/Iceland/Detroit. When do these people find time? She is also a militant vegan. What would she have to say about those grilled chicken sandwiches?

Personally I see a genuine Tom/Sian connection. They really have things in common. This sounds like Page Six fantasyland.

  27. Miss Jupitero says:

So what is up in cray-cray land? Do you think they will ever tire of these relationship explosions? Poor Hiddles. He is going to catch fandom PTSD if they don’t watch it.

  28. Boo says:

he is a heartthrob? could have fooled me.

  29. Bread and Circuses says:

    Beautiful ginger babies!

Except it’s probably not true. Ah, well.

  30. Chrissy says:

As a self-confessed Hiddleston fan-girl, I surprisingly like them together. Although, I can imagine his overt optimism and love for leather freaking Jessica out a little…

But, this all sounds very unrealistic, so whatever is all I say!

  31. Michele says:

    Very cute couple, if true.

  32. Ms Kay says:

*Alan Rickman voice and unfazed face* ha ha ha ha…. hhha!

This has got to be Tuesdayest Tuesday of Wednesdays BS news eh 😀

@ j.eyre oh thanks for being worried darling (unless it’s a poker face you’re pulling here?..) but I’m in good spirits!

@ Eve good grief, has Hiddledton stolen your car or something? Your irritation over Parker is growing per nanosecond, and LOL at the whole Hathaway shipping! Anyway here have my asthma tube darling 😀

    • j.eyre says:

ah my darling Kay-Doo, when are you not in good spirits? Even when you are bifurcating the competition you do it with a smile.

Yesterday was my birthday so I will take your graciousness and the photos of Tom above as my gifts.

(and yes, I shall return him untouched by 5.)

      • Ms Kay says:

*gasp* HAPPY BELATED BIRTHDAY MY DEAR!!! Hope you had a good time celebrating and/or better yet full of laughter and much love.

Ah well you can have them pics… I have the man in flesh and bones so… *flicks hair*

      • EscapedConvent says:

Happy Birthday, Miss Eyre, from me and my darling Cumby! He is over here at my place drinking tea and reading the Sonnets to me. (And no one can convince me he isn’t.)

He was a little “broody” about not having a baby stashed in his cardigan today, so I made him a sweet little ginger babydoll out of felt & yarn. I think he’s tired from jet-lag, as he has been talking to it.

      • Eve says:

        @ EscapedConvent:

Did you really think I wouldn’t see this? Bitch, please.

        *sharpens the biggest slutshank*

      • T.Fanty says:

        @ EC and Eve:

Have at it, ladies! And while you two are slutshanking away, please ignore Cumby as he quietly tiptoes out of the room, and me, standing at the window, waving my infant in his direction.

ETA: HUGE belated birthday salutations to Miss Eyre. I hope parlor games with Mr. Rochester and pilot were in abundance.

      • EscapedConvent says:

@ Eve! Put that slutshank back in the holster, honey. We are going to have to stay alert, because T.Fanty has the upper hand. She’s the one with the ginger baby!

How can we compete with a sweet little curly-haired ginger dumpling?

      • Eve says:

I’ll dress one of my cats as a baby — bundle it up (in a baby-themed blanket and all).

He won’t be able to notice that from a distance, and when he’s close enough to see, it’s going to be too late! *EVIL LAUGHTER*

      • T.Fanty says:

I say we band together, to form the ultimate Cumby-snatching triumvirate. Right now, the whole “voice on my thighs” thing is actually trumped by the desire to have someone else look after my small child, so I’ll give you both my share of the first month for free! Can’t say fairer than that.

      • Eve says:

        It’s a deal! 😀

Although, to be perfectly honest, I already have his voice on *MY* thighs anytime I want: I downloaded that trailer and converted it to mp3 — dear god, that man’s voice is out of this world!!! (and a friend of mine noticed he sounds like my beloved Leonard Cohen when he says “You think your world is safe, it’s an illusion…” — there’s no bigger compliment than this one for both of us).

      • EscapedConvent says:

        @T.Fanty,

I am warming to this Cumby Triumvirate idea….oh, wait, I just remembered how that triumvirate thing worked out for Marc Antony……

Oh, hell with it—damn the torpedoes, it’s Cumby! And I love babies, so okay. But do pack some English teacher cardigans with the gingerbaby, will you?

        @ Eve

You just connected Cumby to Leonard Cohen—Huzzah! Soon we’ll be able to play Six Degrees of CumberBacon.

      • Izzy says:

Sending a virtual bunch of birthday balloons your way! Happy birthday to a fellow celebitcher!

    • Eve says:

@ Eve good grief, has Hiddledton stolen your car or something? Your irritation over Parker is growing per nanosecond, and LOL at the whole Hathaway shipping! Anyway here have my asthma tube darling

I think I may have finally moved to the dark side…THEY HAD COOKIES!!!

  33. alons -y alonso says:

I call BS on this. It just seems….unlikely.

  34. Jessie says:

Why am I hoping this is true? They would make a cute couple.

  35. BlueAngelCV says:

Gah, I hate it. My reaction to the headline was a gasp of horror.
I don’t know what is is about her but she really rubs me the wrong way even though she’s relatively unoffensive.
I can happily ignore her most of the time but not if she’s after my Hiddleston!
I don’t think she’d be a good match with Hiddleston but I do agree that I could see her with Cumberbatch.

  36. Miss Jupitero says:

Is it just me, or does anyone else wonder if this is just a way to keep Hiddles in the headlines during the Golden Globe and Oscar season?

    • Ms Kay says:

If so, then they’ve won the Golden Globe and Oscar for Best Dumbest in a Leading Role of Dumber & Dumbest of the Dumbest-est ways to keep them headlines!

    • linkle says:

Probably not to keep him in the headlines but to put him there for once. He’s still low under the radar in terms of celebrity status and has never really made headlines before like this. It’s only those psycotic fans on tumblr and twitter who regard him as a major A-list star and keep voting for him to win those best/sexiest/best dressed actor polls(which make me cringe so so much).

      • Ms Kay says:

I definitely agree. Tom Hiddleston isn’t that popular outside the internet in terms of being known. He is only getting started career wise. Benedict Cumberbatch makes more news outside because well he’s been in the game for a little while and has landed major nominations such as GG and Emmys, add to that his little mouth blunders here and there and we all know scandalous sells more than good boy image, so all that combined is a win. In the UK, Tom Hiddleston doesn’t make the newspapers at all, unless it’s theatre related (yes I’m looking at you Shakespeare) nor even the paps think he is a seller. If he was dating the likes of ScarJo then yes it’d be different.

The BIFAs and other BFI awards having him as a jury member are just clever for using Tom Hiddeslton popularity in a bid to get more followers PR and internet wise as it’s the biggest communication tool out there, and now lately the Jameson Empire 60 seconds things he is the ambassador or whatever.. But reality is he hasn’t got a massive career yet and not so much experience, only that his eloquence and overenthusiastic state of mind and kindness helps.

If his career goes well, then may be within 10-15 years he’ll have access to the A-list status and bigger tools such as Berlin or Cannes Festival or Venice who knows…

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Couldn’t agree more. Don’t get me wrong, I like him– but I don’t think he is a stellar actor or great artist, not yet anyway, and the more he opens his mouth on Twitter, the more I have to conclude that maybe a double first from Cambridge ain’t what it used to be. (Seriously, he thinks Alain De Botton is a great philosopher? Pretty tepid waters, Tom.) I’m old enough to remember Alan Rickman in the early part of his career (and I saw Branagh in stage as Henry V). Hiddles does not come close. He still comes across as a boy in awe of the big people. Sweet, but he is not yet one of them.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

      • T.Fanty says:

Okay, am I the only one who sees “Alain du Bottom” whenever that pops up? Alain du Bottom would make a great Steve Coogan character.

ETA: his Henry was a huge disappointment. However, I really liked his Hal, and I really think it’s the difference between working with Richard Eyre and the TV director who did HV.

And Miss J – I am so envious. Did you see AR when he was at the RSC? I would have loved to have seen his Troilus, but it was before my time. I saw him in John Gabriel Borkman recently, but was a little underwhelmed. He will always own my heart, because of Truly, Madly, Deeply, though. I’m waiting for the remake of that with Cumby and Rachel Weitz.

      • Eve says:

        @ T.Fanty:

His Henry was a disappointment? Try to tell that to a tumblr fan. I saw a post (that had been reblogged, by the way) with pictures of Hiddleston in character (like, 4 or 6 stills from different movies) and she said, I kid you not, that “not even Johnny Depp could do that”.

Sorry, as much as I find Hiddleston charming and that Depp has made a full out of himself during the past two years, to say — or even suggest — Hiddleston is a better actor than him is completely delusional. I mean, it CAN’T be just a matter of personal taste because even if that was the case, they’d still have to compare their respective bodies of work.

I don’t understand this new form of fandom (generically speaking, not exclusively about Hiddleston fans): the one that blinds people. Maybe I’m too objective and/or cynical, but I can see through my love (or hatred) towards any actor. These people simply can’t.

        EDIT (found it):

        http://tomhiddlestunned.tumblr.com/post/38845888482/theresafireinsideofthisheart-sherlyhiddles

      • T.Fanty says:

        @ Eve:
Firstly, we do have to consider that many of these tumblr girls probably haven’t encountered any of Depp’s pre-Pirates work, so they actually may have a point there.

I actually don’t think it’s new, but the internet has allowed this type of fandom to morph into this terrifying hydra-headed beast. Take the Cumby/Hiddles thing, for example. In many ways, it mirrors the affection for John Lennon and Paul McCartney. One is revered for his jovial and slightlt foolishg character, and the other for being the archetypal good boy. What is a little icky about the Hiddles nonsense is that all the emphasis on revering him for his spiritual and intellectual perfection, which he appears to be buying into. The whole point of a fandom is to buy into an illusion, but Hiddles’ interaction seems to be blurring those boundaries and it isn’t healthy.

        Essay over.

      • Eve says:

        @ T.Fanty:

I know that (they’re young), and that he has worn out his welcome as Jack Sparrow and has been repeting himself (particularly when it comes to his work with tim Burton), but still…after he did the first Pirates, there are at least four movies where you can see how fantastic he is (like Finding Neverland, The Libertine, Sweeney Todd, Public Enemies and even the voice work for Corpse Bride).

I mean, I see your point but I don’t think what those girls were doing was an objective comparison (I don’t think they’re considering the things I’m saying now, for instance).

Anyway, I agree that the internet is (partially) to blame for fandoms being a whole new level of crazy nowadays.

      • T.Fanty says:

Heh – you’re right there. I don’t think objectivity (or sanity or reality) comes in to play here much at all.

And good call on Finding Neverland – great movie.

      • Eve says:

Dear god, I saw only now that I wrote “made a full out of himself”. I meant “fool”, obviously.

    • Tish says:

That attempt to get headlines for the GG was effing pathetic. It was like it was made out by a Tumblr fangirl. Geez. And yeah, I do not get his acting skills either. Sure, he is good in Midnight in Paris but I think there is nothing special to it. Even his Loki is meh. He did not own it at all. I can list twenty actors who can do a better job than him. And he tries sooo damn hard to please fans, IMO. And he was utterly generic in The Hollow Crown.

Yeah. He is not on the Cumberbatch, Hardy, Fassbender league yet.

  37. Miss Jupitero says:

Haha! Seriously though, I have to weigh in and agree that however charming and talented Hiddles is, I with the fan girls would take their exploding ovaries to a worthier place. I don’t think he is especially hot.or heart throbby

    • EscapedConvent says:

I wonder who first used their favorite phrase “exploding ovaries”?! It makes me wonder if any of them are old enough for an actual visit to a gynecologist. 😉

  38. Miss Jupitero says:

Ugh I hate my iPhone. Posted by accident! Anyway I wanted toadk since I avoid tumbr, are people at least. Sliming down a bit?

  39. La Calabaza says:

    She’s dating Jason Clarke apparently.

  40. dasha says:

Oh yeah it had to be Luke, have to keep Hiddle’s name out there, he needs more roles.

How did Sian Clifford get mixed up in this anyway, I thought their “romantic relationship” was a collective Tumblr delusion? I thought they were supposed to be best friends? I mean there are stories about him sleeping with beautiful models, and he has dated some lovely actresses. The man likes what he likes *winks*.

  41. Miss Jupitero says:

I like the idea of him dating someone who is smart, kind of frumpy with no dress sense, and who has a llot of attitude and a real life. Just me I guess. Models. Oh God, is he a “modelizer”? My opinion of him went down a few notches.

    Sorry for all my typos….

  42. Miss Jupitero says:

@tfanty: I liked in Oxfordshire in the eighties, and saw many, many race productions with Rickman, Lesser, Stevenson, Shaw, Sher, Duncan, Pryce, Macrae etc. Saw Troilus Cressida five times I loved it so much. Went to a theatre featival at which Jeremy Irons stood next to my seat handling the lights. These were amazing actors, amazing productions.

Hiddleston: I think has a lot to learn about doing Shakespeare. I do not think he is a great actor. He was a good Hal, but HV made me feel like I was watching a football match played by a really bad motivational speaker at which his crotch was the big star. Also Ben Wishaw left him in the dust.

    • T.fanty says:

      Miss J,

I think I love you. That is all.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Those were good days. And student tickets were cheap. Even cheaper if you didn’t mind the crappy seats or waiting until the last minute. I was at Oxford, very poor, but loved spending every last penny I had on theatre and books. Blackwells and RSC were the monkeys on my back.

      • T.Fanty says:

Oh my goodness – it was SO easy to go to the theatre. I used to go and see anything, just because I could afford it. One of my first RSC experiences was John Barton’s Peer Gynt, and it changed my life. It makes me so sad that my students just don’t have that opportunity anymore.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Yes, I went back to England a couple of years ago and just assumed that all that easy access to great theatre would still be the norm. I was so crestfallen. Those days are gone completely. Everything is expensive, everything has to be booked in advance, and there just isn’t as much small scale theatre as there once was.

I remember going to Stratford to see a few plays (yes, I went for a weekend and just watched one play after another back to back until I was practically hallucinating), and they were in the middle of a festival aimed at students. It was theatre and artists’ talks- high quality, fabulous, often informal and thrown together in a rehearsal space– pretty much around the clock. Someone sang songs by Peter Barnes in the middle of the night, Sinead Cusack put together a short performance of Long Lankin– that sort of thing. Tickets ran along the lines of 1 or 2 pounds tops. I stuffed my face with this until I could not think straight.

Those were very, very good days. I wish we could bring them back. I feel sorry for students today– my student days were so carefree, everything was in reach, and it just isn’t like that anymore.

      • T.Fanty says:

I also think that it’s going to kill truly great theatre. Writers – at least in the US – don’t take risks anymore, because they have to market their plays to the blue-rinse crowd who can afford to go. I think American theatre is in a dire state, and Britian won’t be too far behind, the way funding for the regionals is being sliced away.

That said, I was totally excited to see the resurgence of both Brenton and Barker this past year. Well-deserved recognition for both of them.

  43. Miss Jupitero says:

    Okay that was awkward.

Her publicists have denied this, and sources have confirmed that she has another honey entirely. His publicists on the other hand have said nothing, which in my opinion makes him look like a tit, as they say in Britain. This was hugely awkward for her.

If he were a gentleman, I think he would join in to clear up the rumor and use the opportunity to congratulate Jessica on her prize.

    • dasha says:

It pretty much looks like it’s his publicist who set it up, oh Luke, I mean you could have done more research into who Jessica is and if she had a boyfriend. Silly PR man.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Really? What signs are you seeing?

I am just taking this like a trout in the milk sort of thing because it really does sound like a very lame attempt to stoke the Hiddleston internet fires and hitch his wagon to a real star.

This could also explain why Hiddleston is not saying anything or stepping in to diffuse the rumors and be gracious. It all sounds like really bad behavior to me.

All of this provokes the question: What is the Hiddles doing now and why does Luke W. think he needs this attention? Maybe things are really quiet in London?

    • tubular_trekkie says:

I sort of agree. It looks like this might have been a clumsy way of raising his profile by having his name connected to a GG winner (and Oscar/BAFTA nominee).

Are things a bit slow at Hiddleston Towers? I do hope not. I like him a great deal – thought he was very good in The Hollow Crown, but maybe he’s not ‘going places’ as far or as fast as he’d hoped…
He’s still a fair way off being a really hot property I think (Tumblr notwithstanding!), yet I’m sure he’s got the talent, the looks and the connections to carve out a successful career for himself. (Whether he’ll actually make the Hollywood ‘A’ list or just be a reasonably big, well-respected British actor remains to be seen though.)

      • Miss Jupitero says:

There are a lot of well dressed, well connected British character actors who are far from A-List, but who show up regularly in films and have damned solid careers.

I think Tom wants badly to be A-List, famous, and powerful, and in bed with A-List, famous, and powerful, and be in all of the blockbusters (Star Wars!) and make that kind of money. But he also wants to be thought of as the cerebral Shakespearean actor at home. And be on stage again. And direct films. And direct Thor 3. And please everyone. And empower the lives of fangirls with his daily affirmations. And…

Jesus, this guy still needs to figure out what he wants to be when he grows up.

      • tubular_trekkie says:

Ha ha! (Or should that be ehehehe!! 🙂 )
I can’t dislike someone who comes across like a kid in a sweetshop, I really can’t. Is he a bit “too much”? Maybe. As long as he doesn’t end up as a jack of all trades, master of none, I’m sure he’ll do well.
Right now I’m just waiting for someone to cast him as Hamlet…

      • T.Fanty says:

I’m not on board with him as a Hamlet. It would be too angsty. I’d be much more excited if someone cast him as a Macbeth with Ruth Wilson as Lady M. That would be hot and really fascinating.

      • tubular_trekkie says:

I quite like the idea of an angsty Hiddleston Hamlet, I must say. Your Macbeth suggestion is a good one though!

    • dasha says:

      >What is the Hiddles doing now and why does Luke W. think he needs this attention?

Hiddles is between jobs, so keeping his name in the press will help, no matter how silly the story is or in what rag it’s published in. Hiddles will forever be “the guy who Jessica Chastain dated, but not really”. Jessica was a perfect pick, seeing as she’s a good actress, has her second Oscar nom, she’s in a couple of pictures with Tom from when she met him and she makes sure people know exactly zip about her love life.

As for the publicity thing, well Tom just tweeted that he’s doing a Unicef UK tour to meet the children and what work Unicef does (did not name the country). His publicist also tweeted about it. I think this is partly out of an interest in Unicef and for publicity, because as I have often heard “the best person is the one who is charitable while not making a big deal about being charitable”. I am not trying to put him down, I just would have respected it more if he had just done it and not tweeted all over about it including in his @’s.

As for the Jessica thing, I think that was a misfire from Luke, maybe in a way to keep any gay rumors off Tom. I don’t think Tom bringing his best friend (Sian Clifford who he’s been friends with since his drama school days) as his plus #1 to those premieres/awards shows in Dec has helped matters, in fact I have heard people say that him (and this is in their words, not mine) “bringing such a homely looking girl to these awards shows and premieres makes him look even more gay”. Fans expect him to show up at these events with someone on par with him, ie: a beautiful girl wearing a beautiful dress with a lovely smile.

I noticed that through all of this, Jessica was never really attacked, unlike Sian who was attacked on her twitter. Weird.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

I think Jessica was not attacked because she is a.) so very, very a-list, unassailable, and above Tom, and b.) the whole story was so, very obviously bunk. Nobody believed it.

Unicef: I love Unicef, and I hesitate to criticize anyone who does anything for a charity– and I believe he believes himself to be sincere– but this is such an obvious publicity and image-making stunt, what with his publicist tweeting it, etc. He wants to stay in the public eye and wants to be seen being “noble.” Sorry, I just don’t respect this. I’d respect it if he just got out there and did stuff, but that is not what he does.

Who said this about Sian? Seriously? People think Tom is gay? I really do feel badly for her. I think her Twitter feed is even more annoying than Tom’s, but her homely face, sack-like clothes, and cheap shoes kind of evoke my sympathy.

      • tubular_trekkie says:

I’m not on Twitter so this Unicef thing is news to me. Laudable no doubt, but also a way of keeping his name ‘out there’ in the Twittersphere. And I do know what you mean about this; possibly it does come across as a bit self-serving I suppose. I can’t be too critical of him though, the profession he’s in is pretty much all about promoting yourself, your talent, your image, your public persona and so on. The man’s driven and ambitious clearly, although more in a “gee whizz, let’s do it!!” sort of way than anything more cynical. At least that’s my take on it. I think he needs a new acting role (hopefully an interesting and rewarding one), and soon.

  44. LadyS says:

Well this was rebuked quicker than you could say Loki’d, what makes me a bit idk if sadder or not is how people in tumblr are between cray cray or being hypocrites because the great majority does THINKS they are dating and think the pic from a year ago is proof enough. Also yes some of his fangirls are going “OH GOOD FOR HIM” and yara yara and I am so sure some of those are some of the girls that dizzed Sian like last month.

If this was a publicity stunt? It is one that will benefit him more than Jessica, what better press than being linked to a woman that just won an award and got her second consecutive nods from the Oscars? Jessica has enough press and needs no more of it, and if this was a stunt I will like to believe it was mess up from Luke and not exactly Tom, but the fact Tom hasn’t come forward to say anything like Jessica’s people have is quite worrisome.

I am I do like him and all, I think he is a decent enough actor and he is talented, has it to make a name of himself but seems to not be doing a good job about it? His PR should really talk with him about keeping a line with the fans and all…maybe it is a time for a new PR dude.

Also well Tom is not the only one that has Luke always hovering behing him, everytime you see a picture of Emma Watson, which he also represents, Luke is also always there.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

Oh God, I just noticed that Luke announced on Twitter that you can follow Tom’s Unicef tour by using the Tom_UnicefUK hashtag. He is going to Twitter the whole thing, no doubt accompanied by many songs of the day.

Time for Hiddles to get a different publicist!

This is a *very* bad idea and just makes him look like a cheap, shallow opportunist. Does he not understand this? He used to seem so smart. Don’t get me wrong: Charity work is good, but blatantly using a Unicef tour for a Twitter publicity campaign is in such bad taste. I will be amazed if this goes over ell with anyone (outside of the Hiddlestoner fan club of course).

How does Luke Windsor find the time to follow everyone around? Don’t publicists have lives?

    • Miss Jupitero says:

“but the fact Tom hasn’t come forward to say anything like Jessica’s people have is quite worrisome.”

I am still very shocked that he has said nothing. Surely everyone know that this kind of thing freaks Chastain out, and she must be feeling kind of used. You would think that just out of kindness and gentlemanly decorum he would step forward and say something, and maybe take the opportunity to say something nice and congratulatory about her.

What happened to the Courtly!Tom ho respects women? Or is he really just a modelizer?

      • LadyS says:

You know, I didn’t know that UNICEF thing till like right now and worse now that I know about that hashtag thing, NO just no. Tom go kick Luke to the curb and get a new person, because really I knew that he opened the twitter because Luke advised him to do so and I wouldn’t be surprised if Luke is the one poking him to keep updating his twitter. Which yes sure it is good every once in awhile but yes, if this is like a public move to make him look closer to his fans, yes LUKE that ain’t good Tom is kind playing with Fire because some of his fans are freaking crazy.

So yes Tom time to fire Luke and get someone new.

As for the UNICEF thing, yes Tom I think it is amazing that you’re doing charity work and all but you don’t need to announce it to the world and make this publicity to make yourself look good, and again I think this is another Luke move more than likely which just makes me thing that YES TOM LOSE THAT MAN…RIGHT NOW! And no…I don’t think Luke seems to have a life if he’s not following Tom around, he is following Emma Watson and I am just “:\ well okay whatever”

Someone pointed out to me that maybe Tom still doesn’t knows about this but I call that BS, how can he not know about it? It is pretty much everywhere now and it has been said it was fake since like a few hours after it was out, but yes Tom…where are your manners, you should get balls or whatever, come forward and say this is not true, apologize or something and maybe congratulate Miss Chastain for her award! I mean seriously Tom if you’re okay with this just to get a bit ahead of the game is like…I will be so dissapointed in you, because he might have what it takes but he lacks the patience for it maybe.

And wait he is a modelizer? When was that said…WTF?

      • Flower says:

If memory serves me right, when he first got his Twitter it was during the time he had a girlfriend named Susannah and the fans were just tearing her apart. Some fans actually forwarded links to him (this was before he had 400k followers) of a hate blog and he did and said nothing. Most men would stand up for their ladies if someone was being cruel and rude, but he didn’t, always thought that was odd.

As for the model thing, yeah I’ve heard he’s kind of a player who uses his fame to get women into bed, and he hooks up with models for short lived flings. Some of his fans actually think he’s chaste and is so above one night stands, hilarious.

I always think the best thing to do is totally ignore rude/abusive/crazy people on the internet. There’s no point in entering into any kind of dialogue with such people.

As for the model thing – I have no idea. Internet gossip is well, internet gossip. I’m not one of those 15-year-old Tumblrites who thinks he lives like a monk.
I will however admit I’m probably a rather silly 30-something who has a bit of a ‘thing’ for him. So feel free to ignore me I guess; I am somewhat biased!!

      • LadyS says:

@ Flower: I don’t know when he started his twitter, irony for I am following on twitter and like I rarely pay attention to his tweets, but then I don’t pay attention to the twitter…why do I even have one to begin with? Well maybe he was going for an better ignore it, just like when he kind of ignores the people that send him those disturbing links of fantasies with him or Loki, besides more than likely whatever he might have said will have not put a stop to said fans, but then lack of words also gave a bit of an opening to tear her apart more. Well idk…

OH GOD, that reminds me a bit to the Daniel Radcliffe thing in which he was all “if a girl want to sleep with me to get her fifteen minutes of fame, then be it I don’t mind” but yes I mean I am not under any illusion he is chaste, he is 31 getting to know fame so of course he will get flings, as long as he is careful and doesn’t gets someone that will so open her mouth to say she was with him, because that is just bad taste.

@tubular_trekkie: yes I am kind of thinking that since I tend to do the same and ignore the rude/crazy people but the lack of saying anything just fanned the flames I suppose.

Hahaha I am a bit biased too with Tom, for I am a fan of his, but not biased enough to think he is not a grown man with needs and that he must now have more chances at getting some due to his slowly building fame.

  45. Tish says:

You know who I can see Jessica with? Benedict Cumberbatch.

    • LadyS says:

Hahaha I was kind of actually seeing that too, Jessica doesn’t seems to be Tom’s type of preferred girls.

Tom seems to go brunette and curvy or blond with great legs.

  46. Miss Jupitero says:

Awww I don;t mean to be ungenerous. I think his interest are heartfelt and really wants to pitch in for Unicef. I just wish he would leave the publicist out of the equation and just… ya know, dance as though no one is watching.

    • LadyS says:

I do think his interest in the charity work is there and that he truly wants to help. But having his publicist like reposting it and that hashtag thing, not that good, yes just go a do a good without maybe involving possible media or publicity.

    • Syrav says:

Apparently he’s being as “vocal” about this trip as he is because it’s sort of an interactive UNICEF project, where the celebrity posts an online video diary about his trip to raise awareness. They actually were urging fans to guess his destination the past few days on twitter.

    • Roberta says:

As an interactive project, OK, it looked like aggressive PR to start with. Unicef are obviously trying to engage with his -cray cray – young fanbase, but it looks like his publicist (creepy Luke) has gone out there with him – UGH. I honestly think his heart is in the right place, just the PR on this, stinks a bit. And Unicef seem a bit clueless aswell

      • Miss Jupitero says:

I’ve been watching Twitter. Did Luke really go with him? Ugh, sorry. That really does leave a bad taste in my mouth. I admit I would be a whole lot more charitable to Tom’s motives if he didn’t bring his publicist along.

I could imagine someone at Unicef saying that this is a great opportunity to get his cray-cray fan base to do something useful like raise money for Unicef. It is a big and very loyal fan base, and those small donations do add up. Fine.

But I think it is also an obvious and bid to give Tom visibility and get him in there with all the other celebrity charity people. It doesn’t look like he is doing anything other than being the honored VIP visitor, taking pictures, and twittering.

Just my thoughts. I work for charities, so I am familiar with people who use the third world to find meaning in their lives, and it doesn’t bother me if they at least put aside the taffeta and do something.

      • tubular_trekkie says:

I can see why Unicef would think using him is a good idea. He has a sizeable following on Twitter and marshalling the ‘Hiddlestoners’ could raise quite a bit of money for them.

That said there’s a certain element of pandering going on here: posting video diaries and pics and so forth is all very well and good, but most of this is probably going to be drooled over on Tumblr I would imagine, with the Unicef aspect being almost incidental.

I don’t know, it all seems a bit embarrassing somehow. I think TH *seems* like a nice chap and I don’t think he’s deliberately showboating (more just feeling excited/flattered by the attention perhaps), but still…
I’d rather see more acting, less tweeting, I really would.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Judging by what I see I twitter, it is just like Tumblr. Lots of squeeing, it is all about Tom, and he appears to be just fine with that. It’s the red carpet transported to Africa. I don;t think he is consciously grandstanding, but I don’t think he is really thinking very deeply about this either, or understands how this might look. Is that a posh thing?

I wonder what Unicef is thinking? They have worked with plenty of celebrities before, but this kind of pandering seems unusual.

      • tubular_trekkie says:

Well, I like him enormously (that’s why I’m here discussing this in the first place of course!), so I’d say good luck to him if he’s enjoying himself. He comes across as very enthusiastic and exuberant about everything, and he seems genuinely appreciative of his fans.

I do find it a shame though that the character of some of the fangirling that goes on has very definitely descended into sycophancy. You’ve also got to wonder if all this Tumblr heartthrob stuff is really going to be of any benefit to him in the long-run in terms of his career. I think he *is* a heartthrob (very much so!!), but being mega-popular with the Tumblr crowd might not be enough in and of itself.

      • Eve says:

@ Roberta, Miss Jupitero and Tubular_trekkie:

Well, that (bringing his publicist along) says a lot about his motives, in my opinion (and it isn’t good).

And I’m really glad I’m not the only one who finds that guy (Windsor) creepy.

I’m sorry to say this — because there’s a bunch of Hiddlestoners I really like around here — but it’s official, girls: I’m COMPLETELY off the Tom Hiddleston bandwagon.

P.S.: I’m also *thisclose* to start calling him a shameless famewhore (sorry again).

      • tubular_trekkie says:

Eve: No need to apologise. I have some misgivings myself over this Unicef/Twitter business. He’s obviously enjoying the current level of fame that he’s achieved and wants to maintain it/develop it further. Does that make him a jerk? I don’t think so, although I suppose it *could* if it seems like he’s too desperate for it. Playing to the gallery on Twitter might fall into that category IMO.

I’m sort of surprised that he doesn’t appear to have any new major acting work lined up. Why is that I wonder? Maybe he’s just being really choosy about his roles?

      • Miss Jupitero says:

@Eve: I have to say I feel the same. My angel food cake sank for Tom a long time ago.

I think what started my cooling off was the Twitter feed coupled with my discovery that he is *not* in fact multilingual (I now distrust *everything* that comes from his publicist as utter hype), but this publicity thing with Unicef has really sealed it for me.

I can give you a long, long list of celebrities who do real things for charities and really put themselves out there and none of them bring in their publicists.

Apologies to all the Hiddlestoners on this forum. He does look nice in a well made suit, but so does pretty much anyone man has 3K to spend on a suit.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

@tubular_trekkie: He signed on to do Black Wings Has my Angel, but my understanding is that this is on long term hold because Anna Paquin has conflicts (she just gave birth to twins). Filming was suppose to be last year. I am wondering if Paquin is even going to do it.

According to IMdb, that is all he has coming up in the next year. It does seem strange– 2012 was so packed.

      • Eve says:

        @ Tubular_trekkie:

“I’m sort of surprised that he doesn’t appear to have any new major acting work lined up. Why is that I wonder? Maybe he’s just being really choosy about his roles?”

I think he isn’t as sought after as his fans’s Tumblr activity suggests. Think about it: aside from Tumblr and Marvel/Disney PR machine, there isn’t a really big hype about him or his acting abilities out there (just compare his career to Benedict Cumberbatch’s or/and Tom Hardy’s, for instance).

That would also explain his impressive free time for tweeting, this (really random) rumour about him and Chastain hooking up — which I’m more and more inclined to believe was planted by Windsor — and the Unicef thing.

By the way, I really appreciate the fact I can voice my opinion without upsetting you guys — if I dared to say that to ANY Tumblr/Twitter fan I’d be ripped to shreds. But if someday I go overboard (I’m a judgemental bitch, after all), just let me know.

      • tubular_trekkie says:

Eve: You could be right there. Tumblr seems to think he’s some global mega-star, but realistically he’s not really anywhere near that level of recognition is he? (Few people are to be fair.)

The Chastain rumour was bizarre. It does make you wonder who floated it in the first place, especially as it looks like it was designed to garner him more attention. (Well, Chastain certainly doesn’t need the press coverage!) I don’t know.
I still think he’s great, but what with this apparent lull in his schedule and the out-to-lunch fandom that he’s
saddled with on Twitter and Tumblr, I hope he hasn’t hit a bump in the road.

PS. I also appreciate being able to have a civil conversation about this – even if we don’t agree on all points – without a lot of mindless squeeing or cattiness. Thanks.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

I too am so glad toga e found a smart gossip forum! And I like having the chance to sort through how much I am being objective vs bitchy. Please call neon itif I overdo the bitchy!

I know imdb is not the beaconof truth, buyt I suspect that if he had other projects going, ok Luke (with whom Tom is sharing his room in Africa) would make sure it was out there. I think the sudden lull is odd: 2011 and 12 were packed with everything, and Tomos ambitious, but let’s face it– no awards, no major recognition except from the cray-cray fandom.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Ugh. Please excuse my typos and autocorrect mayhem!

      • tubular_trekkie says:

        Miss Jupitero:
Putting my fan hat back on again: I wouldn’t say that just because he’s not become Daniel Day-Lewis overnight that makes him an also-ran.

From my ordinary-member-of-the-public perspective, he’s done some fairly impressive stuff – acclaimed theatre work, lots of things for the BBC etc. Okay, some of this was only minor parts, but you wouldn’t expect anyone to just stroll into huge leading roles straight off the bat, would you?

If I find it odd and surprising that he doesn’t have any new projects lined up (yet), it’s because I think he’s good. He needs to be in more things!

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Oy! (Typing on my computer instead of my phone now…)

I am certainly not saying he is an “also ran,” but given the frenzy of activity and the pandering to fans in the past two years it does seem kind of odd that there is nothing else lying ahead– and if there was, I think Luke would make sure it was known.

He is a good looking man, has talent, and I like his overall nerdiness– but I don’t think he is quite what he was cracked up to be, and I think the over-publicizing may be damaging in the long run.

He would do well to get a more professional and seasoned publicist, someone to whom he is less personally attached, and to rely a little less on the “Hiddlestoners” because I think even people in the industry are making fun of this. That seems like most of the problem right there.

      • Ms Kay says:

@ Eve my love you are confirming what was already known ages ago so not exactly a shocker eh, you Phoebe’d Parker 😉

@ Miss Jupitero and tubular_trekkie apologies in advance for the long reply.

Actually the mistake would be to see tumblr as a somewhat “source” in terms of credibility, I wrote it on another website forum that he is not that popular outside the internet world, he is just getting started, it’s indeed the frenzy fandom trying to make of him some A-list and God-like, which he isn’t. Still he has inspired quite a few people to do/be good out there, dude has his little impact. Because well Brad Pitt didn’t exactly inspire many women to pass their A-levels in literature, only A-levels in fantasizing and other dirty dreams after watching Fight Club or Legends of The Fall eh (I raise my hand first I passed the Brad Pitt A-levels hands down!)

And upcoming projects wise bare in mind that until it is officially signed on/green lighted, it might still be a project up in the air and not appear on the imdb page nor anywhere, and also he is bound not to say much when nothing is 100% sure/official (but yes one shall have as per usual his poetic answer about how his slate is clear for 2013 life is like a book yadayada etc zZzZzzz). Who knows? Let’s wait and see. Plenty of other actors out there who were seen as the next big thing had lots of projects back then that turned out to be unfortunate, so better have a year of nothing than have a year full of crap film one after the other eh… why look at it like it’s the end?

As for UNICEF, as per usual he is genuinely and naively excited to be part of the it and probably UNICEF saw an opportunity to get his fandom to follow but overall bring awareness on children hunger and other problems, and the bright side is since last year some his fan pages has raised quite a bunch of money, no matter what it definitely counts for something. Yes Luke Windsor is present, but as much as he is his publicist, him and Tom Hiddleston are friends (as he calls him). Does it throw a shade the publicist side? Sure it does, but what is more important, to be irked by the publicist or the cause that got people attention and be irked that there are still unresolved issues such and hunger and malnutrition and other poverty? Problem is these organisations send them celebs as decoys to make both sides look good, there are some who genuinely believe in it and fight for the causes and there are others who do it for publicity, but most importantly the organisation tells/shows a very small side, it hides the biggest effing omerta law controlling everything.

Anyhoo, no matter the timeline of his acting/non acting things, at the end of the day he is still an actor, unless I’m an idiot he isn’t aiming to be a male Saint Angie Jo charity wise. But yes brace yourselves he is going to write about 1000000xxxxinfinity pages of “Treasure Island Adventures” from his half safari half humanitarian trip… I’m a tad surprised that people didn’t think that’d happen. It’s Tom “Parker” Hiddleston we are talking about here.

      • Ms Kay says:

PS: As much as he is genuine and utterly nice, he is no exception to the fact that being an artist (musician, actor, painter etc..) is about ego and tough skin, I mean an artist is mostly in the hope to have his work liked, loved, appreciated you name it, so yes it’s about ego, so being an actor belongs to that category once in the film industry, and extra activities such as charity is part of it, no brainer. And yes his fandom is part of his ego, without them he’d be nothing.

      • tubular_trekkie says:

        Miss Jupitero:
Yes, I think I agree with you about the publicity and the Tumblr situation. I wouldn’t perhaps have done once, but this Unicef business has crossed a line for me. I’ve seen some tweet (posted on Tumblr) from somebody called ‘Louise O’Shea’ along the lines of “look girls here’s Tom in outfit x” with the obvious implication that they *know* it’s going to cause Tumblr/Twitter mayhem. Even if it’s to raise money/awareness for charity it makes me very uneasy. What is going on here exactly? Stuff like this isn’t directly promoting Unicef’s work and it isn’t promoting TH’s work as an actor either – it’s simply encouraging the already-out-of-control squeeing and fawning over TH’s ‘hotness’.

I dare say he’s pleased and flattered that so many people are interested in him/like him/find him attractive (who wouldn’t be!), but I think getting too hung up on that aspect of his success is unwise. He’s not going to secure lots of high profile, interesting or challenging acting work solely on the basis of how many Twitter followers he has or how many girls fancy him on Tumblr.

Ms Kay: There’s a certain amount of giddiness and naivete about him that makes me think he is well-intentioned and fundamentally nice, even if some aspects of this Unicef thing rub me up the wrong way. He’s sometimes overly florid and gives me the impression he could ramble on and on and on if you let him, but I think that’s all part of the charm. I’m probably a bit of a berk though.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

His enthusiasm and naivete are essentially charming to me, and indicate to me that he is a nice, earnest guy who means well and genuinely cares– but he is also old enough to know better about how bringing his publicist along on something as serious as this makes him look. He is old enough to know better about a lot of things. He is way to anxious for everyone’s approval and attention. (Ironic considering what he says he is a attracted to in a woman– he would do well to care a bit less about what everyone thinks of him.)

True, maybe Luke is tagging along as a friend more than a publicist: but he is still his publicist, and his presence is making this look like it’s all about Tom. Perhaps the karmic lesson is that it is a mistake to hire a close friend to take on such a role.

Tom’s interactions with his fans are also not helping at all. How he thinks this fandom is a good thing is beyond me. I understand the initial gratitude, but it is weird, stalkery, and alienating.

If it raises money for Unicef, hey, wonderful, but my early opinion that he was refreshingly cerebral and aware has taken a nosedive.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

I’d like to also make clear that I giddily an earnestly approve of anything that helps Unicef! Their celebrity ambassador program exists for a reason, and they are aware that not everyone is going to be a Matt Damon or a Mia Farrow.

He’s certainly part of the “Look at me, I’m going on an adventure!” enthusiast faction, and it still brings a lot of publicity and value to the organization.

I’m a little concerned that I am coming across as too cynical to recognize this. I’m not! I am a writer and artist myself (I am familiar with the egos in this field, though nothing compares to the entertainment industry), and I work for nonprofits (not Unicef, but an organization that is somewhat close to what they do, and which does not cultivate celebrities), and so I think I know a few things about what is going on over there and how this works. He would have done well to leave the entourage at home.

      • tubular_trekkie says:

        Miss Jupitero:
I’m probably of a more skeptical mindset I’m afraid. I don’t deny that it’s great that TH feels he can interact with his fandom in some ways. He does indeed seem a nice chap who is very polite and friendly and so naturally wants to express his gratitude for their support. That however is where it should stop IMO. Okay, be friendly, be grateful, tweet a few bits and bobs on Twitter. But don’t have people connected with Unicef (or your own publicity people) pandering to the more, er, intense parts of the fanbase. Using TH’s celebrity to promote Unicef is fine up to a point; blatantly exploiting his heartthrob status whilst egging on his ‘cray cray’ fans isn’t. It’s playing with fire and it makes TH look needy and try-hard.

I still like him though. A lot 😉

      • Miss Jupitero says:

“Needy and Try hard” Yeah that sums it up for me.

I just read an article that gave me some perspective though: he has put in ten years of trying hard and losing a lot of parts to bigger names, so he may be feeling a big extra push right now to scramble and make the most of whatever attention he can get, wherever he can get it. I am convinced that the Jessica rumor came straight from Luke– anythin g to keep his name out there nd establish his brand. At the moment his cray-cray fans are what he has; *that* is where he is getting attention. Everything else seems to be a great big silence.

I wish he would just take his own advice to other people, which he dispenses so easily, and be more self-possessed.

Question about Luke: Is Tom his only client? Is he really a professional publicist? Since when do publicists go everywhere with their clients?

      • tubular_trekkie says:

        Miss Jupitero:
It’s a tough industry certainly, even for someone with talent who is also a graduate of Cambridge and RADA 🙁 I can’t blame him for wanting to maximise his opportunities, perhaps wherever he sees them.

I am unsure however whether playing Loki constituted his break-out role. Sure, it’s brought him a lot of attention, but that attention is tied to a cult franchise. Most of his more devoted (or should that be nutty?) fans are onboard because of their interest in the Marvel films generally. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with that of course, just that he needs to broaden his appeal outside of that particular niche if he’s going to really have any staying power.

I thought someone mentioned further up this thread that Luke Windsor also represents Emma Watson. I don’t know if that’s true or not – I’m not a fan of Emma Watson.

      • Miss Jupitero says:

Much as I loved Thor and Avengers, I did not think either script was much to write home about. Loki is not a role that can bring critical acclaim; only squeeing fandom.

I think his better films are the ones he did with Joanna Hogg. But they are so low profile, and I don’t think he is that actor anymore. He’s aged a lot.

I think a really solid tv series, something on the scale of Sherlock or Dr Who could really make him.
