Looking at the post-Globes coverage on our site and other sites, I think I’m probably the only person in the world who wasn’t moved by Jodie Foster’s “coming out” speech, mostly because she didn’t come out, and she seemed to be throwing shade on everyone in the room who does come out publicly and who didn’t meet up to her exacting standards of privacy (privacy standards… and nothing else). Like, Jodie Foster will judge you harshly for having a Twitter account and for talking about your boyfriend on Facebook. But if you want to be a rabid anti-Semite who beats the hell out of your baby-mama, Jodie will totally be BFFs with you.
Anyway, in the wake of Jodie’s “coming out but not really,” it seems that another Hollywood star – a guy who, much like Jodie, we’ve known about their sexuality for years – has decided to formally come out of the glass closet. That man? Victor Garber!
While Jodie Foster made her sexual orientation a public spectacle at the 70th Annual Golden Globe Awards in Beverly Hills Jan. 13, Titanic actor Victor Garber quietly confirmed that he’s gay in an interview with Greg in Hollywood blogger Greg Hernandez.
Garber — best known for his roles in the movies Argo, Legally Blonde, Milk, The First Wives Club and Sleepless in Seattle — addressed his homosexuality during the TV Critics Association Press Tour in Pasadena, Calif. in early January.
Hernandez asked Garber about a Wikipedia entry that claimed he lives in New York City with artist and model Rainer Andreesen.
“I don’t really talk about it but everybody knows,” the 63-year-old actor said of his relationship with Andreesen, a fellow Canadian. “He’s going to be out here with me for the SAG Awards.”
Garber — who has been nominated for six Emmy Awards since entering show business — first spoke about his longtime love in an April 2012 interview with Canada’s Forever Young.
“My companion Rainer Andreesen and I have been together almost 13 years in Greenwich Village,” he said. “We both love New York.”
In addition to his film career, Garber has also appeared on the small screen in Alias, 30 Rock, Frasier, Ugly Betty, Web Therapy, The Big C, Damages, Deception, Eli Stone, Nurse Jackie and Glee.
Aw. I mean, I knew he was gay, but I didn’t know he had been with a guy for 13 years! That’s epic. Would you like to see this Rainer guy? Here you go:

Incidentally, I thought it was so cute/sweet/lovely that Victor was at Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner’s table at the Golden Globes. Ben puts Victor in his movies (Victor was in The Town and Argo) and I think Victor is something of a second father to Jennifer Garner – they’ve been really close since Alias, and Victor is really tight with Bradley Cooper too. I like that the Garner-Afflecks always include him in what they’re doing. The friendship seems genuine.

No clue at all! But he’s such a good actor that it doesn’t even matter to me. I always enjoy his work on the screen (TV or movie), so as long as he continues picking projects that he enjoys working on, I’ll be a fan.

I remember seeing some photos of an event where both Jennifer and Victor were… might have been after Samuel’s birth (not positive though). They were hugging, and you could see that Jen was teary-eyed and so happy to see him. 😉

That’s been a long-time blind gossip thing. Apparently, Victor Garber was what killed Coop’s marriage to Jennifer Esposito. That’s what the blind gossip says – that she caught them in bed together.
Oh wow I didn’t realise it was that bad. I tend not to pay too much attention to blind gossip or gay rumors but I’d heard about this before I even became a gossip whore so I’m quite surprised that so many people are surprised that Victor’s gay, like Kevin Spacey I thought it was common knowledge.

Yeah I don’t know why but something about the speech — and her need to involve Mel so prominently in it — just isn’t sitting right. Yet I’ve seen other commenters on other sites being ripped for not being intellectual enough to get it.
At first, I was just happy to see JF. After a second view of the speech, I’m gonna go with you guys. It was just weird.
I really don’t get that. Receiving a lifetime achievement award almost always entails thanking one’s family. Unfortunately for Jodie, she can’t easily do that without acknowledging an aspect of her personal life she has, up until now, kept mum on.
I also didn’t get the feeling that she was attacking those who do want to broadcast their personal lives for all to see but rather, she was making the point that she simply is not one of those people. There is a difference between saying ‘that’s not for me’ and saying ‘absolutely anyone who wants/does that is terrible’. I happen to think Jodie was saying the former.
It was definitely awkward and came across as angry in some sections, but I took that for nervousness.
What a sweet man. He was specially ordained in order to marry Jen and Ben back in 2005. Garber’s long been one of my favorites. Old school dashing and so talented.

I love what you wrote, and I agree! I’m glad somebody’s not falling all over Jody’s “courage”. Jody was non-commital and seemed conflicted. But not conflicted about Mel; no shame for him there. There’s nothing bad about being gay, but there sure is a whole lot of bad with being a hateful, abusing, racist, misogynist.

He is a great actor and a really nice, down to earth guy. I’m glad he is happy.
He’s not a big “Name” (except on legit stage perhaps & thru Alias re-runs), but Victor Garber is a powerfully talented, all-round actor. Whether or not you knew he was gay, he & Spy-Mom were super-HOT together on Alias.
Also, one of the most likable things about Jennifer Garner is her long-standing friendship with Garber. Affleck is smart to take advantage of that connection, & cast him whenever he can.
