Salma Hayek in Alexander McQueen at the Spirit Awards: boring or gorgeous?

These are some photos from last night’s Independent Spirit Awards, which is the independent-film awards always held the night before the Oscars. You can read the winners list here – Silver Linings Playbook won big, taking home Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actress. The awards show goes down in a tent, and as such, the whole thing is pretty low-key. Most ladies wear simple dresses or slacks and a cute top. This year it seemed like some of the ladies were overdoing it. Let’s start with Salma Hayek and her husband Francois-Henri Pinault. I’m not sure why Salma was there…? She’s due to present at the Oscars tonight too, and I’m sure Pinault will be on the red carpet with her there too. She’s wearing Alexander McQueen here – I kind of don’t hate it? It’s not the best thing, but it’s interesting and it’s appropriate for the occasion.

Amy Poehler in David Meister. It’s a cute look, and this is the best her breakup bangs have looked thus far (which isn’t saying much). I like the pop of the red shoes and red clutch.

Kerry Washington in head-to-toe Giambattista Valli. On any other girl, I think I might have flat-out hated this, but I kind of think Kerry is pulling it off. It looks like she’s wearing a Monet, right? One complaint: the shoes are too matchy-matchy with the dress.

Camila Alves was my pick (along with Jennifer Lawrence, who Bedhead will cover in a moment) for Most Overdressed At the Spirits. Camila wore this full-on Escada gown in a cloying shade of pink. I mean… she looks beautiful and I can’t believe how quickly her body snaps back into shape after having a baby, but this is too much for the Spirits. This dress would have been great at the Vanity Fair Oscar party.

And lastly, here’s Zoe Saldana in Dolce & Gabbana. I rarely think that big stripes are a good idea, but Zoe’s got the slim, tall figure to make this look chic. Not bad at all.

I think I like Amy’s look the best.

  2. Happymom says:

I actually like how all of them look. Although I’m not a fan of Kerry’s shoes.

      +1
and in more it’s totally appropriated (Camilla Calves is just a little overdressed in my opinion)

    • T.C. says:

      +2

This group of ladies is perfect. Love all their outfits. Salma Hayek’s waist with the belt looks fabulous.

  3. Christina says:

Yes, Camilla is a bit overdressed, but she’s so ridiculously beautiful I couldn’t care less.

  4. Anna says:

I will never understand “marrying for money” when the guy is a skeeve and an ugly one to boot. I would much much much rather go for handsome and brilliant and well-off (or potentially so) than Mr. Weirdo Super-Rich any day. And it is not like she was starving. I don’t get it.

Otherwise, Salma’s dress is not too bad, but one could get the same look at much less cost.

    • Isa says:

Maybe she actually does love him. I mean, woman fall in love with men all the time and leave me scratching my head.

    • Joanna says:

hate to break it to you, but handsome, brilliant and well-off don’t come in one package (man). you might get handsome, but then you won’t get faithful. you’ll get brilliant but then he won’t be good looking. for every one of those desirable traits, there will be at least one undesirable trait..you just have to pick your poison, what you can live with.

      • Anna says:

This is not true. My father was all of the above and was faithful. Also, I have dated (long term) such a man, and they do exist.

      • videli says:

        Joanna,
You sound like a yaya sharing her 19th century bits of wisdom. I met men who have all the above traits. I’m married to one. Oh wait, he has a flaw! He can’t fold towels to save his life!

      • Joanna says:

wow, honestly, I’m surprised. well good for you guys.

      • taxi says:

        He’s Linda Evangelista’s baby-daddy.

    • melca blue says:

My best friend’s mother once gave this piece of advice: It’s better to marry rich and unhappy, than poor and happy.

Not an advice I would ever take.

  5. mia girl says:

I kinda like the look and how Salma’s paired the black modern belt with the softer look of the dress.

But now that I think about it, maybe I like the dress because it reminds me of my daughter’s first communion gown.

  6. MrsBPitt says:

I never thought that Salma’s marriage would last this long…Camilla Alves is gorgeous!

  7. jbea says:

Camilla Alvez may be over dressed, but that color looks great on her.

I think Amy P has been looking beautiful lately, but I don’t think that dress or (the color black) look that good on her.

The fabric that Selma H’s dress is made of looks thick and stiff. The sleeves are bad too.

Really, none of these clothes are interesting or pretty, imo

    • lulu1 says:

Not interesting, and the white Alexander McQueen one looks like they are now designing primarily with Kate Middleton in mind

  8. Jennifer12 says:

Why is Salma looking like a lollipop head? And she looks like she’s wearing a wedding dress. The only nice dress is Amy Poehler’s and her shoes don’t go with it.

  9. Maggi says:

Salma looks so beautiful! Her face, her lipstick, her casual hair, the belt….it’s all gorgeous.

Zoe’s dress looks so flattering and chic on her.

  10. j.eyre says:

Camilla is gorgeous and that color is lovely on her. There is something about the cutout that is off in my opinion. I can’t quite figure out what it is, though.

I like Kerry’s dress. I like all the dresses, really.

  11. Isa says:

    Camilla looks amazing!

  12. Morgan says:

Salma and Jeremy Renner were the co-chairs of the event, that’s why she was there.

  13. elceibeno08 says:

I like Zoe’s figure but her dress not so much. Did she escape from prison last night?

  14. karmasabiatch! says:

I think all of these women look beautiful, not the usual awards show where someone always wears something hideous. Agree with the rest of the crowd, CA is a little too formal. Kerry and Zoe look AH-MAZ-ING. Think they are among the most beautiful women in Hollyweird, great style obviously comes naturally to them.

  15. A Fan says:

Salma – you know how to dress your body!

    Camila – sigh…so beautiful…

Zoe – you mean I have to pick between you and Camila?

  16. Ann says:

The dress makes it look like Salma had a breast reduction. Maybe she caved to the pressures of French High Society where busty isn’t “chic”.

    • Miss M says:

I think you are spot on about Salma!!!!

I think she lost weight and she also had a breast reduction.

  17. blonde on the dock says:

Salma’s dress is pretty. I have never found her to be attractive. I don’t know why.

  18. TheVoice says:

They all look great except I think Kerry Washington’s dress should have been a little shorter or more flowy/softer material.

I don’t think Camilla is attractive one bit. I just don’t see it.

  19. taxi says:

The black accessories are pretty harsh with
    Salma’s dress.

Why is Camilla a carpet solo? Married to Matthew, right, who’s doing blue suede shoes. They dressed for different events?

  20. Ranunculus says:

Zoe Saldana looks gorgeous with her simple but sophisticated look. Salma Hayek always reminds me of some society celebrity who is more suited at a stinking rich snobbish cocktail party than the independent movie awards – just like her shady friend Halle Berry.

  21. janie says:

She was stunning in that dress!

  22. Eleonor says:

I really love Salma’s dress, I could totally wear it!
