Charlize Theron in white Christian Dior at the Oscars: gorgeous & goddess-y?

Structurally, Charlize Theron’s white Dior gown reminded me of Anne Hathaway’s Chanel gown at the Golden Globes. Two-piece white gowns with faux-peplums, done in different ways and worn completely differently. I mean… for Charlize, you actually have to TRY to make her look bad, she’s such a red carpet goddess. While I don’t think this was her best look ever, I really liked it overall. What I love about Charlize is that she can wear Dior Haute Couture and it never overwhelms her. My favorite part of this look? Her hair. I LOVE her short hair and I love that she bleached it. She looked young and fresh and gorgeous. Also: I loved Charlize presenting with Dustin Hoffman. I kind of want them to work together now.

And here’s Zoe Saldana in Alexis Mabille Couture. I wasn’t into it, but I thought it was Givenchy when I first saw it. My mom loved it, if that makes any difference. I don’t think Zoe looks bad at all, it just wasn’t my favorite dress and I didn’t understand why she was there, unless she was just trying to create an awkward moment with her ex, Bradley Cooper.

Charlize. Yes. Always and forever <3

    • Becky1 says:

Charlize kicks ass! She had my favorite Oscar look. It’s hard to rock hair that short but she does it well.

  2. LadyJane says:

Charlize was perfection. It makes me wonder why Anne H didn’t keep her short pixie crop – at least for the oscars – ala Charlize, instead of growing it out into the Dorthy Hamil ‘do which was so tragic on her.

I love Zoe’s dress. I don’t know why it works – it shouldn’t with all that was going on with the flowers, the belt, the layers. But she really wore it and looked perfect.

    • Rachel says:

Can you imagine the “who wore the pixie cut best” posts if Anne had kept her hair super short??? No one wants to be compared to Charlize Theron. No one. That is setting yourself up for failure.

    • bluhare says:

Agree with both of you. Charlene could do an 80’s fashion retrospective and make it look good.

And why shouldn’t Zoe Saldana be there? Hmmph.

  3. Eleonor says:

    This woman is perfection.

  4. Hipocricy says:

Charlize : feminine grace, sobriety and class.

I kinda love Zoe dress on her long lean frame but with long hair like hers, there is no exccuse ! She had plenty of great hairstyles to choose instead of that too simple, too slick hairdo.

  5. Miss Kiki says:

In the bottom picture the woman’s face in the background sums up what I’m thinking

‘Is Zoe sh*tting me with that budget, home made belt’

I would have loved the dress if it was a few inches longer at the front.

Charlize face looks divine, dress isn’t that interesting. I must say I breathed a sigh of relief when I saw that she didn’t attend with My Viking.

  6. Ms Kay says:

Less is more. Charlize is a goddess, effortlessly stunning and elegant!

I didn’t like Zoe dress at all, too much happening between the top, the belt and bottom… Urgh!

    • LadyMTL says:

My thoughts exactly! Less is more; you don’t have to be overflowing in ruffles or feathers (coughAmyAdamscough) to look stunning. Charlize is right at the top of my best dressed list.

  7. andrea says:

Almost anyone else but Charlize and that dress would have looked like a rolled up table napkin (see AnnE).

Something about Zoe’s gown makes it look like a bridesmaid dress.

  8. elkiddo says:

So many white dresses. What is up?

    • bea says:

I agree! Looks like a bridal convention. Except for Charlize. Her white dress looks sleek, elegant and modern.

    • Embo says:

I am thinking White Gowns is the new thing. My sisters work did the graphic design for this Fund Raiser for the Heart Association, and she brought me to the event! There were a significant number of white gowns. Lucky for me, I just got engaged, maybe there will be a nice selection of white gowns once these babies go on sale!! 😀

  9. the original bellaluna says:

Charlize looks great. She wears short hair so well. (I also thought her dance with Channing was cute.)

And may I just say that Robin Roberts, in her blue dress, was truly STUNNING!

  10. lady mary. says:

Ah Charlize! (bows in front of the goddess!) the only thing that statuesque and glam than her was the “oscar” statue

  11. yael says:

in my next life, please let me be charlize…

i really liked zoe’s dress from the side, but that was killed by the front view.

  12. ruby says:

Not impressed by this look. Another boring peplum dress, and for some reason it makes her legs look stumpy… Also, I’m disappointed that she went right back to the same old blonde look. We have enough bottle blondes, please try to be at least a little different.

  13. No matter how stupid this saying is I’m going to say it: She is one of the women that could wear a potato sack and make it look good. Her face is PERFECTION!

  14. lucy2 says:

Charlize looked amazing as always. Her face is perfection.

Zoe’s I was sort of so-so on. She looked good, but I think there was a lot of different stuff going on with that dress and a little simpler would have been better.

  15. KP says:

Love Charlize, though I don’t get this pooling of fabric at the bottom – not just her, Reese Witherspoon had the same. It’s unflattering and on someone as tall as Charlize, confusing.

I had to laugh during the pre-show when Charlize told Seacrest that her short hair was liberating and that “all women” should do it at least once in their life. Sure, if “all women” had the bone structure of Charlize! I chuckled at the thought of the disastrous curly red fro I would end up with!

Zoe’s dress is just strange, but all I could think of when I saw her is how badly she needs a sandwich. TINY.

  16. lflips says:

Charlize’s hair is too severe; it detracts from her beautiful face. The dress is meh…

    • Faye says:

Exactly this. Charlize looks beautiful in spite of her hair, not because of it. Also, with the blonde hair and the white dress it’s just too monochromatic, somehow. I know she’s supposed to be all mod, but I think a color would have been prettier.

Zoe is my girl-crush, and she looks gorgeous to me (although yes, she’s been in better dresses). I think her face is so glow-y and lovely.

  17. Christina says:

It’s not my favourite look from Charlize, but she still looks better than 99% of the women there. If I could look like any woman on earth, it would be Charlize.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Yeah, me too. She’s a special kind of gorgeous.

      • Christina says:

Yes – even beautiful women look ordinary next to Charlize. The word ‘goddess’ is annoyingly overused, but it describes Charlize perfectly. She looks like she comes from another, more gorgeous realm.

  18. CS says:

Zoe was promoting Star Trek, I think.

  19. TheOriginalVctoria says:

The only one who outshone Charlize was Halle.

Black just don’t crack and Halle was slay every bitch in there. Jane was killing it too!

Back to Charlize. This is a woman who knows how to dress. Her hair cut was edgy so she didn’t need to go over the top with her dress. Something simple to highlight that beautiful bone structure, neck and shoulders was needed. And she delivered ten fold!

The color was perfect on her tanned skin, and complimented the haircut!

    • FassDaActor says:

Not a fan of her acting but Halle is the ageless goddess like Naomi. You just can’t mess with her.

Charlize did a great job with the dancing. Very graceful!

  20. maria says:

Take away the bow and belt and Zoe’s dress would have been perfect.

    Charlize looked great.

    • L says:

This. With that busy bodice, why wear a belt AND a huge bow on the side? Lose that and the dress would have been perfect.

  21. Mia 4S says:

Charlize looked even more extraordinary in motion!

Zoe hosted the Science and Tech Oscars with Chris Pine this year so that’s why they were both there and presented. And to promote Star Trek and be really good eye candy…both of them. 😉

  22. VGS says:

Zoe’s dress was fabulous. Not crazy about Charlize’s dress at all, its too similar to Anne Hathaway’s GG dress.

  23. NerdMomma says:

Zoe is a goddess and she should be everywhere!!! I love her hair, and oddly I love her dress. The top fussiness is usually something I dislike, but somehow with the bottom the whole thing is beautiful and interesting.

  24. Shira says:

Zoe looked like a wedding bouquet.

  25. bagladey says:

Charlize = Gorgeous AND goddess-y and just perfection. Truly beautiful and classy.

  26. Jane says:

Finally, Charlize looked more like herself in her prime years. I was beginning to wonder what happened to her? Drugs or what? I could hardly recognize her anymore in her newer movies.

  27. Nicolette says:

I guess I’m in the minority here, but I loved Zoe’s dress. It’s one of my favorites. And Charlize can wear anything, she’s just that beautiful.

  28. JudyK says:

Charlize is the most beautiful, sexiest, classiest woman on the face of the Earth. She can do no wrong.

    My gawd, she is GORGEOUS.

  29. Mrs.Darcy says:

Now THESE are white dresses, J.Law’s is positively blush by comparison. I’m not crazy about any of them, Charlize looks amazing no matter what but I’m not a fan of the hang, it’s sitting too low on her body and making her look shorter which is weird. Zoe’s is a nice fit but a hot mess stylistically, the top is frou frou, the bottom sci fi/modern, and the metallic wide belt cutting the whole thing awkwardly- wth?

  30. Blue says:

I would like Zoe’s dress if it wasn’t for the vagina at the bottom. It looks so weird.

Charlize is absolutely gorgeous. Love it. So simple but so nice.

  31. Eh...I'm Indifferent says:

Not crazy about Charlize’s dress. Reminds me of the white dress that Kerry Washington wore to (X) awards show this season. I’m not a huge fan of two pieces.

I’m confused when people ask why an actress is at an awards show…especially the Oscars. It’s the Oscars.

Why was Brandi Glanville there…sure. Zoe Saldana…she kind of belongs.

  32. Abby says:

Charlize can rock short hair like nobody else. I had no idea she was so tall until she was dancing with Channing. I was like hold up…. he’s 6’2″…. She’s as tall as him with heels on!

    • LAK says:

She’s a former model. Basic height requirement is 5ft 9in unless they are exceptionally exquisite in the face. That alone should have told you that she is taller than average.

And she looks tall. always has.

  33. truthful says:

I love Zoe, she was there because she is promoting Star Trek, and her Nina Simone movie,I love her.

Charlize, nope seems like shes done this before and its something mean and witchy about her, I’ve never liked her.

  34. Maritza says:

All Charlize needed was the bouquet a veil and the groom.

  35. Lizzie K says:

If any woman could ever make me turn lesbian, it would be Charlize. God, she is gorgeous!

  36. I Choose Me says:

I love Zoe’s dress but I think it would look better without the belt. Charlize looks gorgeous as per usual, her hair and makeup is fab and though I like what she wore it feels a little…safe? I was kind of hoping for something a little off the wall like the rose-boob dress.

  37. NeoCleo says:

This woman is one of the certified big winners in the genetic lottery.

  38. Diana says:

I hated Charlize’s dress but she has such a presence and that hair was rocking the night. Zoe’s dress was really pretty in motion.

  39. Memphis says:

Charlize could wear a sack and still look like she belonged on the red carpet.

    She looked stunning!!

Note to KStew and other slouchies..THIS is how you stand in a dress!

  40. Latifah says:

Charlize will never not own the red carpet.

  41. d says:

Charlize knows how to work it. She is indeed a goddess.

  42. Kelly says:

I love Charlize!! She danced awesome last night!! And Channing was HOT!!

  43. StaCat1 says:

Charlize looked stunning..but that dance number–UGH! really?
I don’t know how they roped her into that….Channing- I get it..but her?

    FACEPALM

  44. Luxe says:

Charlize can do no wrong in my book. I love the haircut. I just can’t get behind Zoe. She’s always in photos and mags, but she’s just not that interesting. And didn’t her dress last year or the year before do this same light to dark fade?

  45. anonymous fan says:

I wasn’t that impressed with Charlize’s dress it was too simple and looked too much like Anne’s GG gown from this year.Charlize wore a gown to the 2012 Golden Globes that was so lovely I still think about it.As far as Zoe,now she is strikingly beautiful to me.Her gown was white too, but it had a different design that I’ve never seen. She looked great, simple but not boring. That is how you do white.

  46. mimi says:

And how about when she danced gracefully with Channing Tatum. Gorgeous, talented, elegant, stylish and so graceful. I don’t think people realize what a treasure she is. A true movie star goddess who puts everyone in the shade. I also think white is her best color.

  47. Jo 'Mama' Besser says:

I’ll take my lumps like a champ:

It’s time for a moratorium on the words ‘perfection’ and ‘goddess’. It’s time.

  48. Dirty Martini says:

    Charlize was indeed a goddess.

Hate her hair though. Just do.

  49. dj says:

Charlize was EASILY the best dressed and most gorgeous of the night. Her super short hair is so chic and she worked it all together effortlessly. That sums her look up–effortless. That’s a movie star!

  50. ??? says:

Well, I’m clearly in the minority in thinking that Charlize is not a “goddess.” No doubt she’s pretty, but I’ve never found her face arrestingly beautiful. I can see the appeal of the whole package, though.

Her hair is very Annie Lennox-esque right now. But Lennox can carry off that edgy look because of her interesting, slightly androgynous features. Maybe once the pixie grows out a little, it’ll be better suited for Charlize.

She wore her dress well, though — with her physique, she’s one of the few who would be able to work a dress like that.

    • FassDaActor says:

You are not in the minority. I agree with everything else. She wore the dress well but it looks like a wedding dress.
