Prince Edward seen threatening dogs with big stick while out hunting

wenn5093778
44 year-old Prince Edward, Prince Charles’ younger brother and the youngest child of Queen Elizabeth, was photographed repeatedly threatening his black labradors with a four foot stick while out pheasant hunting, a double animal cruelty whammy. A representative from the palace confirmed that Edward was trying to get the dogs to stop fighting over a dead pheasant he’d just shot, but said it’s not known whether he actually hit them. You can’t tell from the photos whether Edward is really smacking the dogs, but they’re clearly scared and cowering from him as if they know what to expect. You could say he’s just trying to get them to behave, but it’s so cruel to abuse animals and the pictures make Edward look like a monster. This is a much worse photo scandal for the royals than those pictures of William peeing in public.

Prince Edward could face an RSPCA investigation after he was accused of setting a ‘sickening example’ for lashing out at two gun dogs with a large wooden stick.

The 44-year-old royal was seen reacting violently when the black labradors appeared to grab hold of a dead pheasant during a shoot at Sandringham.

He rushed at the animals with his shotgun tucked under his arm and a 4ft stick raised in the air. He then brought it down sharply several times towards them…

Beverly Cuddy, editor of Dogs Today magazine, said: ‘These images are simply disgraceful – it is an outrage.

‘What sort of message does it send out when the Royal Family are directly involved in this sort of sickening animal cruelty. The Queen is the patron of the RSPCA and the Dogs Trust, yet here is her son behaving in a despicable manner.’

Jill Grieve, of the Countryside Alliance, added: ‘Raising a stick to an animal is never a great idea.

‘Using close control, with a whistle for example, is much more effective than beating a dog with a stick.’

[From The Daily Mail via Gossip Rocks]

The article goes on to quote people who speculate that Edward could have been hitting the ground near the dogs to get them to stop fighting and that he didn’t really hit them with the stick. If they were fighting and there was a danger that they could have hurt each other he may have just reacted instinctively and it wasn’t as cruel as it looked. Either way, this guy could use some lessons in how to manage his animals humanely.

Maybe the rules are different when on the hunt for game or birds in England. I have been on shoots for gamebirds (BACK IN THE 70’S) and I NEVER saw anyone treat their dogs like this. The dogs were treated like little kings. I never saw anyone raise a hand, or a stick, to a dog while in the field. I am a dog lover and can’t imagine going at him with a stick.

  2. vdantev says:

The glare from his forehead would have been sufficiently scary.

  3. geronimo says:

Arsehole. This is not the first time the royals have been condemned for the way they treat animals on shoots.

  4. boomchakaboom says:

My father raised and hunted champion English Pointers all my life. Hunting dogs are in a class of their own and are treated with the utmost care. Raise a stick and strike the ground to get their attention (assuming that’s what he was doing)? Either poorly trained dogs, which I seriously doubt is the case, or Prince Edward is the kind of man who shows his hunting dogs no respect – which my father considered as abusive as actually hitting them.

Shameful, IF he was actually hitting them. If he did just strike the ground near them, while there was no harm done to the dogs it would indicate a lack of training.

  5. Kink says:

You can clearly see him make contact with the dog in the pictures, and it doesn’t stop there, he chases after the dog and throws the stick at him! Spin that one! It’s pretty obvious the Royals merely ‘tolerate’ the rest of us on ‘their’ planet.

  6. Kaiser says:

Um…I’ve done something similar with my dog. My puppy thinks he’s a wolf, and he goes out hunting groundhogs in the summer. Last summer he had one cornered and I hit my dog with a stick to get him to back off.

It didn’t work, and that’s why last summer was known around my house as “The Groundhog Holocaust”.

When dogs get around a fresh kill, they can really hurt people. Just sayin’. Not that I care for Edward at all.

  7. Codzilla says:

Kaiser: You’re absolutely right. While I ADORE my dogs and DESPISE anyone who abuses animals, I’ve also had to resort to hands-on measures on occasion. Every once in a while, one of my dogs pisses the other off to the point where they start fighting. And when yelling doesn’t work, I’ve had to put foot to ass in order to get them to stop. One time I happened be toting four flakes of hay when they started, so out of desperation, I just dumped all of it right on top of them, and they both stopped and looked at me like, WTF? But it worked!

That being said, I don’t know enough about Prince Edward to have a valid opinion about his character, but if he was crossing the line with his doggy discipline, then hopefully a public outcry will make him think twice next time.

  8. Baholicious says:

These likely aren’t ‘his’ dogs, meaning they don’t live with him in the house and he has no personal relationship with them, rather they’re probably from the Royal Kennels.

Dogs will get carried away, especially young ones new to the hunt thing, and using a stick just tells me that he lost/has no control over them and quite likely doesn’t like dogs very much (don’t tell that to the Queen) or is even afraid of them to a degree. People who are afraid of dogs tend to overreact with them.

  9. kate says:

maybe he should try training his dogs instead of threatening them with sticks? just a thought.

  10. raven says:

I suspect these dogs are highly trained. They can get carried away at times, but it sounds like the Prince needs a bit of training himself. No need to beat on them with a stick.

That said, one of the judges in my office was hunting recently, bent over to pick up a duck that had been retrieved and one of the dogs (not his) bit him in the face. He’ll probably need plastic surgery on his nose.

It’s to Edward’s credit that even in a family crammed full of unattractive arseholes, he manages to stand out.

  45. My room right now has one wall light blue, and 2 walls a darker blue. Its sorta a ocean theme. I want something more teenish that would match with a black, white, and gray comforter. My desk is blue and my chair is green. I was thinking leaving one wall blue then painting one purple and one green, but I’m not sure, any ideas?

That’s a backwards and frankly medieval action towards an animal. That sort of behavior, especially by someone so prominently in the public spotlight, is unjustifiable.
