Blake Lively: ‘I would love it I could wear little cut off gloves everyday’

I do not consider Blake Lively to be any kind of style icon. First of all, “icon” gets thrown around too much, and I’m very much “pro” a more conservative parceling out of “icon” status. Like, Nicole Kidman is a style icon. Cate Blanchett is a style icon. Get it? They have decades of iconic red carpet moments to choose from. While I always enjoy seeing Blake on the red carpet, mostly it’s because she gets it wrong. She has a pretty face (imo) and a great body, but all too often she fugs it up in Marchesa or some oddly-proportioned minidress. All of this would be just fine, but the fashion-media always talks about Blake like she’s the second coming of Grace Kelly or something, so there is a problem with the expectations and the reality.

Where was I going with this? Oh, yeah. Since getting married, Blake has definitely been more low-key – she’s only made a few public statements since her wedding, and she’s barely been on any red carpets. I miss her! But Blake has a new interview in Us Weekly, and she’s talking about whose style SHE admires: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley!

She’s become a bonafide fashion icon in her own right thanks to six seasons as the label-loving Serena van der Woodsen on Gossip Girl, so Blake Lively knows impeccable A-list style when she sees it. First on Lively’s list of celebrity style crushes: None other than catwalk queen Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

“She’s just perfect looking — always!” Lively, 25, raves to Us Weekly of Jason Statham’s Victoria’s Secret model girlfriend, 25. “She looks so regal and elegant all the time and I love that. I love that’s she’s a young woman who dresses of times past and isn’t afraid to dress up. It’s really special to be able to celebrate style like that.”

In terms of her own fashion choices, Lively — a fan of designers like Louboutin and Marchesa — says she draws inspiration from centuries ago and the styles worn by the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly.

“I love the sophistication and every single detail,” explains the star. “I would love it I could wear little cut off gloves everyday. Go to the grocery store in a beautiful hat with lace draping over your eye. That would make me so happy.”

Never afraid to push boundaries with her own look, Lively indulged her passion for fashion in September 2012 when she walked down the aisle to marry Ryan Reynolds in a wedding gown she co-designed with Marchesa’s Georgina Chapman. “I’ve worked with her so many times and know her so well,” Chapman told Us at the time of Lively, who had lots of input on her custom-designed beaded gown that featured a silk tulle bodice and rose-gold embroidery.

The actress, Chapman raves, “has a very clean sense of fashion . . .such an innate style.”

I like the way Rosie dresses most of the time too! But I think Rosie benefits greatly from her Burberry contract – Burberry is one of the best brands to be associated with, and whenever Rosie looks particularly good on a red carpet or on the street, you can bet that she’s wearing Burberry.

As for this mess: “I would love it I could wear little cut off gloves everyday. Go to the grocery store in a beautiful hat with lace draping over your eye. That would make me so happy.” I rolled my eyes. Did you? I mean, who is she kidding? And even if she did wear cut-off gloves and a lace-draped hat, she would look like Desperately Seeking Susan-era Madonna rather than a Chanel model.

Georgina Chapman wouldn’t recognize style if it bit her in the ass.

  2. Birdix says:

Sounds like she’s angling for a role in a period piece (or tv show)

  3. Rosie and Blake are actually two of my style icons! It helps that I have a similar body/look to them, so their outfits inspire how I dress on both casual and formal occations.

    • Pandora says:

      Wow lucky you 😀

Do you ever find the sequins on your thongs accidentally snagging cater waiters and passing vanity fair photographers when out and about? And I’d love to hear your tips on unjamming yourself from those pesky smaller doorways when your angel wings get stuck!

Chicks and ducks and mice going to scurry, when i take you out in my surrey…

Cate Blanchett is my personal style role model and my favorite actress. IMO she rarely misses the mark. It’s nice to have someone to look to that is your own age as Blake is doing (and I’m doing with Cate). I get it that Blake longs for a bygone era. I do as well, especially when I see people running around in their pajamas and flip flops in public. But when I think of an icon, I think more of women like Marilyn Monroe or Elizabeth Taylor. An icon is really someone who when you mention their name you immediately think of blonde hair, red lips and singing Happy Birthday (in Marilyn’s case) or fantastic jewelry and violet eyes (in Elizabeth Taylor’s case). As much as I love Cate I’m not sure I would call her an icon just yet. I think in time when you mention her name you will think of a tall, slim, pale blonde in the most interesting outfit on the red carpet.

Meh. She annoys me less now that she’s fading. Gossip Girl was her big chance, and she hasn’t managed to turn that into a substantial film career, so she’s dragging out her fifteen minutes as long as she can. If we stay very quiet and ignore her, she’s eventually going to go away.

I agree with the comments about the difference between her and Cate as a style icon. I also think that it comes down to the difference between someone who pioneers a style and someone who follows one (*side eye to posh).

    • Emma says:

If she was trying to drag out her 15 minutes she’d be seen a whole lot more especially considering it’s fashion week. This girl can’t go anything without being called a famewhore. Good lord. And fyi she has said way before GG ended that when the show did finally end she was going to take a break and that she had other interests like opening a restaurant.

      • T.Fanty says:

I’m not specifically saying she is a famewhore: she just isn’t talented or charismatic enough to maintain a career. I want her to go away because I think that there are other actresses out there more deserving of recognition and a career.

      • Lamont says:

        @Emma
        Well Said

      • mercy says:

+1, Lamont. I’m surprised those quotes (about her taking a break) didn’t get more play. They were a little more interesting than her talking about little white gloves, to be honest (and would no doubt please those who want her to ‘go away’.)

Gossip Girl wasn’t going to give any of the cast big film careers. It gave them stardom and money, but that’s not the same thing.

      • mercy says:

Or +1 Emma, even. Sorry, reading fast.

  7. Lucy2 says:

I’m not sure how she draws any line connecting the sophisticated styles of Grace and Audrey with the ice skatery nonsense that is Marchesa.

  8. Micah says:

Rosie is very stylish….even without the red carpet looks, she knows how to turn out an outfit.

I like Blake’s off carpet style, more than when Fashion people are trying to dress her. She looks Amazing when she does her own Boho thing

  9. bea says:

I do agree with her about RHW. She is gorgeous and is always well dressed.

  10. Carolyn says:

Rosie has natural style. Blake does not. Rosie would not be seen in public in Marchesa.

Yeah Ryan would be thrilled if Blake wandered around all day in white gloves. What an inane comment. Agree with others that she’s fishing for a particular role (good pick up!)

  11. andrea says:

Oh lord, so Blake’s trying to reinvent herself as Grace Kelly (who also did a bit of personal reinvention in her time). Well, if she thinks she can change public perception by changing her own famewh-ring habits to fit, then good luck to her. She might want to rethink Rosie and Georgina though (even if I suspect Marchesa’s not going away until Harvey dies or divorces Georgina).

Must say Blake’s got impeccable timing… look how she patiently waited out the awards season crush before she started in on the press coverage again. Something right out of Harvey’s playbook.

  12. Harpreet says:

Hmmm, it is weird that Blake, after lying low for so long, makes a statement to US magazine, kind of out of the blue.

You’d think she’d save her magazine presence for something a bit more fancy.

  13. megsie says:

Rosie – yes. Blake – absolutely postively no. Rosie has that natural confident style so many models possess. Even if I’m not overly fond of Rosie’s outfit, she still manages to wear it well. Chapman and Lively are a match made in hell.

  14. Lamont says:

According to this recent poll some people do consider Blake stylish.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2282256/Blake-Lively-Rihanna-beat-Kate-Middleton-UK-style-poll-British-women-look-pond-inspiration.html

Maybe this interview was in that context? Or as required in her Gucci contract? Who knows

Anyway it seems to me like an old vanilla interview bigged up in a slow news week – unsure how it implies Blake is ‘scheming’ or ‘media whoring’

Rosie H-W has a face for a Roman coin. As a fellow Brit I’ve always loved her look. Even though she recently covered Spanish Vogue, am surprised her modelling career did not go supernova.

    • mercy says:

+1 I don’t know if she even talked to Us because I’ve heard all the quotes before. Girl likes to play dress up. Nothing new there. Rosie works with her husband on the Marks & Spencer ad campaigns.

  15. TheOriginalKitten says:

I think she’s just saying that she digs that old-school “southern belle” style.

Overall, I like the way she dresses but I’ll stop short at defending her love of Marchesa. No, girl, just NO.

  16. DeltaJuliet says:

“She draws inspiration from centuries ago and the styles worn by the likes of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly”

Apparently they don’t know the difference between a decade and a century.

  17. EmmaStoneWannabe says:

Hmm…Blake looks up to a beautiful blonde model who even kind of looks her. Oo very exciting observation..And if she wants to do the little glove, lace hat thing, she should look to Lemon on ‘Hart of Dixie’ and realize how that ‘fashion statement’ really comes across in 2013.

  18. mk yarwood says:

    Tilda.

  19. ashley says:

Rosie is a HIGH FASHION MODEL so of course she looks good.

  20. moon says:

Blake’s got a great figure, but great style? Definitely not. She’s gotten away with some horrible outfits thanks to her amazing bod, but she has a knack for making couture look cheap

  21. NeoCleo says:

Blake lively always looks like she should be wearing shorts, a tee shirt and hiking boots. There is nothing elegant looking about her. She looks vanilla, girl-next-door. I’d pick her out of a crowd about as soon as I’d pick my own face out of a crowd.

  22. bsh says:

I don’t get the hype around Rosie H.W.. clearly she’s the typical model (androginous looking, except for those big lips) but to me she has a mannish face and a strange body.. thin and muscular, but bulky, especially in the neck/shoulder area. I would never call her beautiful or stunning. Blake is just a good looking “actress” with long legs and a pretty smile

    • Pale fire says:

I picture Jason stathams head every time I see her face lol lol it’s eerie. Do it. They really look the same !!!! You won’t be able to unsee. 😉

  23. KellyinSeattle says:

What’s stopping her from wearing little cut off gloves and a hat whenever she wants? Go for it, Blake. At least then you’d be somewhat interesting.

  24. Gemini08 says:

I agree that style icon gets thrown around too much, but I usually like how Blake dresses. I think she has greatly benefited from the Gossip Girl stylists as well as her own though. I don’t think she has a “personal style”.
