Emma Watson is very grounded; may not pursue acting career

fp_1716036_rij_despereaux_1In an interview with OK!, Emma Watson may have proven herself a rare starlet who is both unassuming and skeptical of her fame. Watson, 18, whose most famous role to date is as Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movie franchise, has told OK! magazine that she’s not quite sure about the whole movie star thing and wants to go to college in the US next fall.  One of her biggest concerns is that she is able maintain the normal lifestyle that her non-celebrity friends take for granted:

The 18-year-old admits she is unsure about life on the big screen and wants to be more like her friends.

She said: “If they’re going to the cinema, I go to the cinema. I try to live a regular life but it’s not always easy.”

Emma, who lives at home in Oxford with her mother and younger brother, admits she isn’t swayed by her movie-making millions.

She added: “Why would someone my age need this much money? Let’s face it, I don’t have any use for it.”

This is an incredibly refreshing thing for a young star to say.  In comparison we have Miley Cyrus, who was disappointed that she didn’t get the car she wanted for her birthday.  Watson seems like she has a good head on her shoulders, which may be partially due to the fact that being a movie star isn’t her main goal in life.  In the OK! article, she goes on to say that she comes “from a background of lawyers and academics. We didn’t watch films in our household.”  Not sure if that’s completely believable, but it makes the point that she wasn’t raised to idolize Hollywood.  In an earlier interview, Watson expressed a similar dilemma between an acting career and higher education:

“I’m not a woman yet, but I’m not a girl any more. [Film companies] say, ‘Oh, in a couple of years you’ll be perfect for this.’ I’ll be like, yeah, but I want to be studying English then, so it’s going to be quite tough to choose between the two.”

Though filming the Harry Potter series has undoubtedly taken up a lot of her time, Watson has only done two other film projects: The Tale of Despereaux and Ballet Shoes.  Daniel Radcliffe, on the other hand, has done  four films and a play on two continents.  She seems more interested in her studies than in pursuing an acting career after the Harry Potter series ends, and it will be interesting to see if she chooses to go back to film after she gets a degree.

Good for her, I think she might choose to go back to doing films after she gets a degree because she will still be young and wants to have fun (thats what I would do if I was in her position) but at the same time if things don’t work out in her movie career she has other option to full back on, unlike most of the celebrities that have not even finished Highschool thinking that their fame and Hollywood success will last forever and when their career is over, they spiral out of control.

She might be like Natalie Portman, so I am sure she will do well.

I remember when that pic of her drinking a Corona came out a few years ago, and everyone thought she was going to be the next Britney. Glad to see she has proved them wrong. I’ve always found her refreshing with her intelligent, honest answers.

I’m grateful my daughter has her for a role model, she is very impressive…but the girl is THE WORST actress I have ever seen! I roll on the floor when i watch the movies…so much huffing and puffing from her…good thing she is smart!

  4. MoJo says:

She’s definitely not a great actor by any definition, but you know, she’s somewhat competent, which has been enough for Tom Cruise!

Still, her attitude is unbelievably COOL, and I applaud her for it. Maybe she’ll end up like Claire Danes’ actor boyfriend, Hugh Dancy, who had came from a similar background. He ended up studying English at Oxford and got into acting slowly, becoming quite good at it over time. Or maybe she’ll pull a Danica McKellar, become a brilliant academic mind who solves the mysteries of the universe with math and does the occasional guest spot and book deal!

I find the comments about her acting pretty comical…first of all, she was a kid who had never acted before. secondly, if she did such a bad job in Harry Potter, then why would they have her back for ALL of the films??? You really think it’s that hard to play a halfblooded kid witch? LOL what were u expecting, Elizabeth Mongtgomery? LMAO How ironic it is then that Emma went on to Disney and Daniel resorted to stripping!

  6. Zoe says:

I love this girl. Wish they could all be like her.

  7. kate says:

    she is adorable.

  8. RAN says:

She’s wonderful and sincere. Good for her – she has her life in front of her and it sounds like she wants to control it.

  9. vdantev says:

She’d actually have to do some acting first before she can make such a decision. She’s cute, but da-hamn my cat would make a more convincing Hermoine.

  10. Leah says:

Ditto everyone else. I really like this girl! Too bad all the other celebrities can’t be as smart as she is.

  11. enchantress says:

She’s so much cuter with her curly hair, although she looks lovely in the header photo as well. I liked her as Hermoine – she had attitude as well as an unconventional look about her. You go girl!

I think a lot of British actors and actresses are this way as opposed to American ones. Jason Isaacs comes from a family of lawyers. They tend to act for the love of acting and they pick movies because of the roles not the money. I have much more respect for British actors than I do American ones but now with reality t.v. etc even britain is starting to go down the tubes with America
