Joel McHale flattered to be called gay: ‘If a guy is offended, something’s wrong’

A couple of weeks ago, I was browsing movies on demand through all the crap I subscribe to and picked a mindless romcom, What’s Your Number. I was treated to scenes of Joel McHale’s bare ass within the first ten minutes, which was a true score for me. (The movie itself wasn’t worthwhile except for some great guest appearances by McHale, Martin Freeman and Anthony Mackie.) I screamed and immediately emailed Kaiser and Bedhead about it. So that’s why I get first dibs on Joel McHale stories. I love him so much and am a huge “Community” fan. (Although it’s getting weak lately, right? I didn’t see last night’s episode yet though.)

McHale’s latest interview, in The Advocate, elevates my opinion of him and I didn’t think that was possible. The entire interview is worth reading, but in the interest of brevity I’m using some excerpts that The Advocate people sent. Go over to their site to read it, it’s worth it. Joel is a very attractive, well-dressed, quick-witted guy and he’s often mistaken for a gay man. He’s kind of flattered by it, though, and says that anyone who is offended by that has something wrong with him. Was he subtly throwing shade on Ryan Seacrest? (Probably not, Ryan is sort-of cool about it too.) Joel has been married for 16 years and has two boys, and he doesn’t mind the gay rumors at all:

The A-List Interview: Joel McHale
The snarky and stylish Community star and The Soup host talks dude crushes, flirtatious gay fans, and the big thing he has in common with Michael Fassbender. Whether he’s cracking wise as host of The Soup or as vain ex-lawyer Jeff Winger on the wacky community college-set sitcom Community, now in its fourth season on NBC, Joel McHale looks good enough to be mistaken for gay. Is it any wonder that men throw themselves at him?

On his boy crush:
Ooh, boy, I have so many. Josh Gad. Brian Williams. Patrick Stewart. Nathan Fillion. Kobe Bryant. Chaz Bono.

On the gay rumors about him because he’s well dressed:
Oh, I still see that on Twitter every day. It’s flattering. I always find it really weird when guys flip out over someone thinking they might be gay. If a guy gets offended by that, there’s something’s wrong with him. I take it as a compliment.

On his shirtless Community scenes:
…I’ll do anything for ratings. I mean, was Michael Fassbender exploited when he did Shame? Because it’s exactly the same thing.

On the support of his gay fans:
Community needs all the help it can get, so thank God for our gay fans. Our young gay fans especially are the loudest and most Internet-savvy. That also speaks to the quality of our show, which I think is highly intelligent.

[From The Advocate]

Kaiser especially loved that Fassbender quote. Oh and I have to mention that Joel was semi-nude in the DVD extras for Ted. (I have to see that, gah.) I would tell you to Google it, but I can share Joel in theory and it’s not NSFW or anything, so here you go. I love that this guy is so cool about his gay fanbase, I wish everyone thought this way. I’ll include one additional quote from this interview that I can’t pass up.

What’s the best way for a straight man to handle [getting hit on in a gay bar]?
Just a very quick, courteous bl*wjob.

Joel and his lucky wife in January. I would say something rude, but I can’t. They look sweet like they belong together.

He is a hottie. I had no idea, where have I been?

  2. Pixie says:

I literally JUST started watching Community last week and I’m already halfway through season 2! I love it! Joel McHale is so funny (and not half bad to look at either!).

    • RocketMerry says:

Right?! Like chips and pizza, totally addictive and you can’t stop having just one more… and when you get to the last one in the bag/plate, depression sinks in.

Sigh. I wonder if McHale has a dark-haired, single twin brother, by any chance?

  3. Charlotte says:

I lurve him. I luff him. I lahve him. Love is not enough.

    • TheOriginalTiffany says:

I’m with you! I used to ask for Joel on the old HGF posts. I’ve been addicted to The Soup for years and it is the only show I purchase on iTunes and save since I went on tour four years ago.

He is funny, sarcastic and so sessy! He and his wife look so cute together. Love him.

I also love that he hates the looking for Bigfoot show, it s his personal vendetta. Lol, frameless candles, anyone?

  4. Dawn says:

I love him to death, he is nothing if not funny and truthful. Acutally he may be the only person on the E! so not entertaining network who does tell the truth.

  5. loma says:

He doesn’t do much for me at first glance but he is cute and I can see him being better in person. Great interview, keep more of him coming.

  6. smee says:

He’s so great, in so many ways. They should give him a late-night show.

  7. Miss Kiki says:

I used to glaze over Joel when I saw interviews etc, then I finally got round to watching the 1st 3 seasons of Community and I am in actual real life lust with him.

  8. Sophie says:

I love that he’s been ok with the occasional joke about his “weird hairline” on Community. The hair plugs were a good investment, because, as awesome as he is (on The Soup, Community and elsewhere), I don’t know if Hollywood would’ve let him be great without them.

  9. Wellsie says:

The way he is snuggling his wife only makes me like him MORE dammit! and she looks adorable.

  10. Mia 4S says:

Joel is a permanent member of my Freebie Five (no disrespect to his lovely wife…I’m not jealous…much…maybe a bit…I hate her! 😉 )

I have to say I have never heard a gay rumor about him in my life. Just proves the point that the Internet has decided that every single male actor is gay. It has turned into a joke and I’m not sure how helpful that is? I would think it would give younger people struggling the impression that there are far more people they admire hiding in the closet than there actually are. Some of them are just straight and gay friendly (like Joel).

  11. popcorn11 says:

I love this guy, lucky wifey. His bare ass is nothing to write home (or a blog) about though. Neither is his shirtless chest. I like his personality and wit but he can keep his clothes on…blech!

  12. Bird says:

Love him, and his wife is super cute.

  13. Tiffany says:

I agree with him. It is flattering and I am in no way flawed if someone assumes I am gay. It means I got options ;).

  14. annabelle says:

Smart, funny, tall and loving. He’s got that Olyphant thing going on.

Love him. That ^ late night show is a great idea. E! doesn’t deserve him.

  15. VV says:

My family LOVES Community. It is regularly quoted by my kids (other people must think they are nuts lol) and I agree this last season has been kind of weak 🙁

That said, I enjoyed reading Joel McHale’s comments. I love him!

    Watch Community, people haha.

    • Laura says:

I can’t decide if this season is weak or if my perception is skewed because I know Dan Harmon is gone. I just love all of the actors so much except for Chevy Chase, I just want to love the show regardless. So i ‘be been cutting them a lot of slack. And Joel McHale really does have it all going on. Lovely smile, lovely family pics.Good on him.

  16. lucy2 says:

I’ve been a fan of his for a long time now, I hope more good things come along for him. He seems like a great guy, and there’s a lot of funny podcast interviews with him.
Community is definitely weak this season. I watched last night and didn’t even crack a smile. 🙁

    • Celebitchy says:

They got a new showrunner after that debacle in which they fired Dan Harmon and I think these episodes we’re seeing are written and directed by a new team. (I didn’t write about it as I need to double-check imdb, I will do that in a bit and get back to you!) They’re trying to switch things up on Community and of course they’re ruining the show. It’s nice to see the characters but something is definitely different and it seems cheapened, not as subtle and clever.

-edit- it’s hard to verify at IMDB, but Dan Harmon isn’t listed as a second writer this season at all (he’s always listed as ‘creator’) and it looks like there are new writers this season. I have to spend more time on it when I have the chance.

      • lucy2 says:

Yeah, you can definitely tell the difference pre and post Harmon. The guy sounded difficult, but he was the voice of the show, and it’s not the same without him.

      • NerdMomma says:

Exactly, it’s watered down and not the same. It’s such a shame because it was a brilliant show.

    • Miss Kiki says:

I’m just gonna say it, Community sucks this season. Here’s an interview with Dan Harmon talking a bit more about the situation.

    • geekychick says:

I ADORE Community. At first, it seemed like nothing special, and then my bf hooked me on it. After the last season I was bummed out for days, thinking how I’ll never enjoy any other series ever again, after I’ve been enlightened. 😉 and then…this season. I hoped so much it’ll be just as good without Harmon, but alas…:((

  17. MonicaQ says:

Love The Soup and the little bit I’ve seen of Community. He’s so snarky, it’s wonderful.

  18. NerdMomma says:

Hey, this is the first time I’ve ever seen his wife! She’s adorable. I’d love to see a family photo with their boys too. But I’m too lazy to google that. I’ve seen him do interviews and stuff and he’s just one of the most likable actors ever. He could do a late night talk show, easy.

I’m NOT too lazy to go looking for scenes with his bare ass though

  19. Jenna says:

Oh, Jeff Winger/Joel McHale how I love thee…

But Community is definitely weaker this season and that saddens me. These new writers just suck. I wanted it to go out (presumably) with a bang. And now it’s just a dud. REALLY hoping for a fifth season. SIX SEASONS AND A MOVIE!

    • geekychick says:

SIX SEASONS AND A MOVIE!! 🙂 If Arrested Development can get it, why wouldn’t Community get one? It’s pure genius (the first 3 seasons).

  20. Agnes says:

I LOVE Joel! He’s hysterical and awesome. And totally right re being mistaken for a gay dude – how could that be offensive? Love him.

  21. GeekLuva says:

Mmm… he is a big hunk o’man. I’ve seen that episode & I don’t remember thinking he looked so… hunky.
And I didn’t know he has hair plugs! Did he admit it?

  22. Diana says:

I love his sense of humor. I haven’t seen community but I adore him on the soup!

  23. Eve says:

CB, that bare ass/nutsack we see in “What’s Your Number” belongs to a body double. Sorry :(.

  24. Alarmjaguar says:

Love him! And his kids are adorable!

My husband dresses well, and lots of people used to wonder, hell they may well still wonder. He’s Latino and that’s part of the culture he grew up in — men care about how they look and dress well. In fact, he’s always annoyed when we see couples out where the woman is dressed to the nines and the men look like total slobs in jeans and flannel or tee shrits. To him, it is disrespectful.

  25. Kloops says:

I’m rooting for him. I had a crush on him 20 (?) years ago when he was on Almost Live. He doesn’t appear to have aged and is still hot and funny. Love him.

  26. Saema says:

    Wow!! Beautiful family!

  27. Legal Annie says:

Joel McHale is to The Soup what Jon Stewart is to The Daily Show. The shows both had very funny, popular hosts (John Henson and Craig Kilborn, respectively). But both Joel and Craig have taken it upon themselves to make the show their own while remaining successful. Great job!

  28. Legal Annie says:

Grr. I mean to say Joel and Jon have made the shows their own.

  29. Reece says:

Now this one I would pull out the shanks for.

  30. kc says:

So gorgeous, so charming — what a lovely looking family.

    Great Friday pick me up.

  31. Meg says:

guys never paid any attention to me in high school so because i was single people thought i was gay. it pissed me off because i desperately wanted a guy to be interested but couldn’t control that they weren’t. so because of that they I’m accused of being gay? WTF?

  32. Skipper says:

Pretty sure this is still Harmon. He left after this season, after Chase walks off. And the other writers take over.

  33. Seagulls says:

I love the whole universe of Community (except Chevy. No Chevy.). More everyone from Community!

And holy flip, that is the most photogenic family I believe I have ever seen.

  34. Lexi says:

There is nothing wrong with being gay! No matter what simple minded people think

  35. Wicked says:

So cute, so funny, so real!

  36. Kosmos says:

What an adorable looking family. His wife is darling and looks like a very happy and balanced marriage. That’s nice to see.
