OK! Magazine claims Britney Spears traded her kids for fame

Britney Spears takes her two boys toy shopping at FAO Schwarz

OK Magazine has come down hard on Britney Spears, claiming she traded her kids for her career comeback. The mag says that because of her past erratic behavior, Britney wasn’t able to get insurance for her upcoming concert tour unless she remained under her dad’s conservatorship. Brit agreed to it, but in doing so she also had to stop pursuing her custody case for her sons. Because Britney’s under a conservatorship, she’s legally considered a child, so she can’t get custody. OK! frames it like Britney made a selfish decision.

But it’s no secret that, as she starts to climb back to the top, there are sacrifices she’s had to make along the way — specifically, spending less time with her two adorable sons, Sean Preston, 3, and Jayden James, 2. Now, OK! has learned exclusivly [sic] the extraordinary price the singer is paying for her comeback, voluntarily giving up the fight to regain custody of her boys in exchange for fame.

Last fall, as her upcoming concert tour was being organized, Brit’s camp discovered that because of the star’s history, they could not purchase insurance to cover her tour unless she was still under the conservatorship of her father Jamie Spears. Until that point, the plan was for the conservatorship to be lifted on Dec. 31, followed by Britney, 27, heading to family court with a petition to regain custody of Preston and Jayden.

But an insider tells OK!, “The insurance situation changed everything.” And so, on Oct. 28, the singer agreed to indefinitely accept her father as her conservator – a decision which meant she would still legally be considered a child. No judge would give her custody of her kids, nor would her ex-husband, Kevin Federline, agree to it.

“Whether it was her decision or whether she was pressured into it, Britney’s deal with the devil put the tour ahead of the kids,” the insider tells OK!.

[From OK!]

I’m really not sure Britney made a deal with the devil, or whatever overly-dramatic way they want to put it. Yes the conservatorship is indefinite, but that doesn’t mean permanent. If she keeps going on the successful track she’s been on, it’s safe to assume Britney will be able to eventually work her way back to her old professional reputation and be able to be insured without her dad. And likely end the conservatorship and work on getting custody of her sons again.

She was in a tough situation, and obviously a tour is important for her career comeback. It’s clear Britney doesn’t do well when she’s not busy working, so it seems like it’s to everyone’s benefit that she tour. Who knows – considering the pace at which she’s been improving, she might be able to get out from the conservatorship and start working on getting custody of Sean and Jayden in a relatively short time.

Having fallen as hard as she did in the beginning of 2008, it will take time for everything to go back to the way it was for her. She needs to keep her head up and her eye on the ball so to speak and everything else will follow.

Maybe she just realized that for now, the kids are better off with the current custody arrangement. Just because she is their mother doesn’t automatically mean she is entitled to full custody – and it doesn’t mean that she should be trying to get it. Given everything that’s happened and the nightmare those boys have been through, she should leave things the way they are.

Well in all fairness, homegirl needs the dollars from this comeback. Protracted court custody battles don’t come cheap.

Momma’s got to pay her child support!

In all seriousness though I think it was the best decision for her AND her boys. She’s making progress and I’m glad to see her behaving less horribly and I’m very glad to not have to see her vagina on every gossip site and rag mag, but it’s going to take more than that. It’s going to take time.

Britney is doing great. GO BRITNEY!

Figures – it all came down to money and not family. And here we were all lead to believe it was because Daddy was doing such a good job.

Anyone who would trade their kids for $$$ goes down a few notches in my book.

no big discovery here ~ she’s UNFIT!

I am certain a healthy, sane Britney will be in a much better position to share custody of her boys. I am also certain a career comeback is essential to her self-esteem and feeling of self-worth. I do not see her juggling fame on one hand and her tour on the other. Cut her some slack, please. These things are not black and white. She has come a long way, and I, for one, am rooting for her all the way.
Don’t you all remember seeing footage of her leaving a store and flashlights going off all over the place with the paps blocking her way? I would quickly become a basket case if I had to live that way, and I am certain lots of you reading this might have the same reaction and downward spiral.

seems to me like she’s with her boys more then ever now and this is just all legal mambo jambo paperwork. And to boot, we haven’t heard a peep from that scumbag lawyer Kaplan in ages, so I feel some sort of deal, pertaining to the kids, has already been worked out. My only concern is that it seems she’s sort of over the whole lip-synching thing and just wants to be with her kids doing what us regular moms do, so if one last tour is what can bring that about, then I hope she handles it well. May peace come to her.

‘juggling fame on one hand and her tour on the other’ – typo on my part. It should be ‘her boys on the other’. So sorry.
I nonetheless still feel immense compassion for her and wish her well all the way.

  11. Bodhi says:

Ditto MSat. She needs to “do well” personally for a long, long time before she can possibly think about regaining custody

I’m sorry if I come across as a hater here, but the vast majority of her fame came along with her youth. I’m also not saying 28 is old, but is anybody really going to care about her and her “professional reputation” when she’s 35 and still hiccuping through her pop recordings? Who will still really listen to her music? I’m one of the people who thinks this comeback is a huge joke – she will never be what she was before – a teen idol. I’m glad she is doing better mentally and I don’t wish her ill, I sincerely hope she can straighten her life out and have a happy life with her sons – but I can’t help but cringe when I hear people say stuff like “she’s back!” It’s wishful thinking across the board. What she was before was the highest paid exotic dancer in American history, so for her, I don’t think she should even TRY to “come back” to that – she should aim for something bigger, better and different. (Stepping off my soapbox now)

I think Britney needs to mature already, she’s 28…not 17, and she’s made some pretty crap choices in her life but whatever, she should have never started having kids or have gotten married to K-Fed in the first place. Problem is her mom and dad have infantilized her so bad now she has no choice but to concede this so she can get her “career” back on track. Maybe she should really try this time instead of falling back on past fame like she’s doing now.
