Princess Madeleine’s fiancé refused a royal title, barely knows any Swedish

Princess Madeleine of Sweden (the youngest child of King Carl Gustuf) got engaged last year – I wrote about the engagement last October. She became engaged to a British-American named Christopher O’Neill. He was raised in the UK, but he lives and works in New York City now. While he’s rich and well-connected and well-educated, he has no title and thus, he is a commoner. And unlike Madeleine’s brother-in-law Prince Daniel (who was also a commoner), Christopher O’Neill has no need or desire for any title. Madeleine and Chris’s wedding is next month, and as the wedding date comes up quickly, her parents offered Chris a title. He has refused it.

Princess Madeleine of Sweden’s fiancé Christopher O’Neill will not be taking a royal title after they marry next month. In a press release on the couple’s website, the British-American financier declined the opportunity, and will instead retain his post as Head of Research at Noster Capital in New York. It read: ‘Mr Christopher O’Neill is and will remain a US citizen, and he intends to continue his business as before after he has married HRH Princess Madeleine.’

The couple, who are based in New York but will marry in Sweden on June 8, were pictured at the Royal Chapel in Stockholm yesterday where they were read the banns of marriage. Dressed in a mint green peplum-waisted dress by Swedish designer Pär Engsheden, Madeleine, 30, looked happy and relaxed as she and her husband-to-be went through the formalities.

For her wedding gown, however, she is believed to have chosen a Valentino creation, though details have been kept strictly under wraps.

Princess Madeleine, who is fourth in line to the Swedish throne, is a project administrator for the World Childhood Foundation, a nonprofit founded by her mother.

Just earlier this month, she and her future husband were seen hosting her parents, the King and Queen of Sweden, in New York, taking in trips to Battery Park and the Red Rooster restaurant in Harlem. Her decision to maintain her life with Mr O’Neill in New York after the wedding makes for a stark contrast with the choices of older sister, Crown Princess Victoria, 35, who married personal trainer Daniel Westling in 2010. After their marriage, he assumed the title Prince Daniel, Duke of Västergötland. Their daughter, Princess Estelle, was born in February 2012.

The wedding of Princess Madeleine is expected to count over 350 guests – a small gathering compared to that of her sister, which included over 1,000. The couple will marry at the Royal Chapel at 4pm, followed by a 21-gun salute. The celebrations will begin with a reception at the Royal Palace, the official residence of the bride’s parents, and concluded by a gala dinner prepared by Michelin-starred chef Mathias Dahlgren.

Princess Madeleine announced her engagement to Mr O’Neill in October last year.

In a brief video clip confirming the news, she said: ‘Chris proposed to me in New York at the start of October, and we are very happy.’

She described the proposal as ‘very romantic and intimate’ but would not reveal anything beyond that.

‘Madeleine and I have known each other for two years and I recently summoned up the courage to ask her to marry me. Thankfully she said yes,’ Mr O’Neill said in English with a British accent.

He added a few words in Swedish, saying he was trying to learn the language ‘but it is difficult.’

Mr O’Neill revealed that he had followed procedure and asked Madeline’s father, King Carl XVI Gustaf, for his daughter’s hand in marriage. Madeline’s mother, Queen Silvia, was thrilled by the news, describing Mr O’Neill as ‘a real dream-son-in-law’, according to the Swedish newspaper Aftonbladet. In turn, the banker says he has been warmly welcomed by the Swedish royals.

‘I felt part of the family right from the very beginning,’ he said. ‘Madeleine’s family is very warm and we have a very good time when we all see each other.’

Mr O’Neill’s family is no stranger to royal connections. His German mother, Eva, is a former girlfriend of Prince Charles. The pair apparently met at a polo match and started an affair in 1986, when the British royal’s marriage to Princess Diana was starting to break down.

St James’s Palace denied that the Prince had had a romantic relationship with Eva, now 72, though she made headlines in Britain in 2003 when she invited Charles and his then-mistress Camilla to the Amadeus festival, which she organises annually in Salzburg, Austria.

When the Prince arrived, thrice-divorced Eva greeted him with a warm embrace and kiss – to the evident discomfort of Camilla, who would go on to marry Charles less than two years later. She later told the Mail that she invited him to Salzburg ‘because I know he is a classical music lover’.

Ha, that story about Chris’s mother is amazing. She sounds like a hoot. As for Madeleine’s plans to move to NYC with her husband and how he’s not taking a title… it’s fine. It’s even appropriate. Crown Princess Victoria didn’t really have that choice – her fiancé needed to take a royal title so that their children would be titled and the monarchy would live on. And from the looks of it, everyone loves Princess Victoria and Prince Daniel, which means that Madeleine and their brother Carl-Phillip can pretty much do whatever they want. It’s like… say Princess Beatrice of York marries a commoner and he refuses a title. No one will get worked up about it. But it IS interesting.

PS… here’s a gorgeous photo of Princess Victoria and her daughter Princess Estelle. Estelle is adorable!

She already lives in NYC and has for a while, she’s not moving there for him. Her job is based out of there, so they are just continuing that after they get married.

It makes sense. He’d have to give up his US and Brit citizenship and quit his job. She’s 4th in line, so it doesn’t really make any sense for him to have a title. Their kids most likely will though.

I get a weird vibe off of him, but he does seem better than her last cheating fiance.

  2. Mew says:

Yeah, I get a weird vibe off him too, like something shady. Maddy seems to have a bit bad taste / bad luck with her men, so I kinda feel like this might be headed to a tragedy. However I hope that it’s not the case, all this shadyness is just my imagination and things are going to work out well for her.

  3. Val says:

Wasn’t Madeleine just recently engaged? Like a few years ago and she had to break it off because he cheated on her? To me its like she’s getting engaged to whomever because she’s getting older.

  4. CandyKay says:

@I Says, I also get a weird vibe off him! I don’t like to stereotype people by their looks, but I get the impression he is the worst type of Wall Street creep, an unkind fellow who will cheat on her and say cruel things as she ages. He has crude, arrogant features.

Madeline looks a lot better now than she did at her sister’s wedding a few years ago, when she showed up with a bright orange spray tan and overdone blonde highlights.

    I wish her well.

    • GoodCapon says:

He does look like a douche. Photos of him smiling and looking like he’s enjoying himself wherever that may be are pretty rare (almost as rare as Victoria Beckham cracking into a smile)

But that’s as far as stereotypes go. I do appreciate that he doesn’t seem like a social climber and is intent to stay on NYC. For Madeleine’s sake I hope this marriage will last.

And yes, she does look better with brown hair! Blonde doesn’t suit her.

  5. teehee says:

I also get a scuzzy vibe from him. But, she has amazing blue eyes…

  6. brin says:

She looks like Maria Menunous in that last pic.

  7. m says:

I dont blame him for not knowing a lot of Swedish. I grew up around it and know its one of those languages you have to grow up speaking or else you are never gonna truly learn it.

    • Ella says:

Swedish grammar is actually super easy. Wayyy easier than for example German, French or Spanish.

One (let’s say Chris…) can absolutely learn to speak Swedish if there’s enough will and interest to do so.

      • marc says:

He might not have to as both speak English and since both their mothers are german they presumably also speak German.

  8. TG says:

They look sweet together but I am not going to second guess the other comment we’d opinions if you think he looks shady he probably is. I love how her mom calls him a “dream-son-in-law”. Translation “rich and well-connected”. I think it is interesting that the lower class one who was the personal trainer gave up his job for a title.

    • whipmyhair says:

Marrying 1st in line is totally different to 4th. But I get what you are saying.

  9. Kath says:

She could do better. I get a smug vibe from him. (With my extensive research based solely on these three photos).

    • Kath says:

Actually, I just realised who he reminds me of. Vigo the Carpathian from Ghostbusters 2.

    • Fishlips says:

Kath, I had the same reaction.I said to myself,”He looks smug.”

    • Meredith says:

I feel the need to clarify about his mother who is identified as a “girlfriend” of Prince Charles’. When a man is married (as Charles was at the time), you are not his “girlfriend”, you are his “mistress”. Big difference in my book!

  10. HH says:

I feel like her taste in men requires a slight hint of douche. Her previous fiancé also looked slightly sleazy and douchey. Just a side note: can anyone tell me why all the other European royal houses are (seemingly) far more relaxed than the BRF? How did that develop? I find it fascinating.

    • Talie says:

Probably because the British press is snobby and obsessed with tradition. So they feel chained by it.

    • LAK says:

I think since the ‘peasants’ in Europe were more than willing to get rid of their royals, unpleasantly of need be, the royals had to unbend and become like the ‘peasants’ pronto.

We experimented briefly with such unbending with Cromwell and his roundheads, didn’t like it and duly restored the royals.

Our attachment for the monarchy is still very much emotional rather than rational.

  11. Gwen says:

Chris seems ok to me. I think it’s a good thing he’s saying no to a titel – at least he’s not into her for the titel – unlike Carl-Phillip’s girlfriend Sofia. She’s gives much worse vibes to me – having done p0rn and all that..

  12. Isabella says:

“Daniel was a personal trainer and gym owner and ran a company called Balance Training with three gyms in central Stockholm.” He isn’t like that low class either…
Very interesting some of y’all think he looks shady. Research time! 😀

    • badrockandroll says:

OK, I did a bit of Google research, and everyone thinks he’s “nice”. And rich. There’s actually precious little out there about him, and just the same old stock photos and comments about his niceness and richness.
But I did find one pic where he’s actually smiling – showing his teeth, which aren’t that great. He’s probably sensitive about them, which is a shame, since the full grin opens his face up, and he looks a lot nicer.

      • bluhare says:

Now that you say that, badrockandroll, it does look like he’s clenching his jaw in the photos vs. just being an arrogant jerk. Giving him the benefit of the doubt right now.

  13. whipmyhair says:

Ok she is really, really, ridiculously good looking. AND works for a charity AND is a princess. He hit the jackpot!

  14. Suze says:

Thanks for throwing a bone to us royaloonies, Kaiser!

I think Maddie’s new look – darker hair, less spray tan – is a lot more sophisticated. I hope this marriage goes well because judging by looks alone the guy looks like an over-groomed playa.

    We’ll see how it goes.

Love Vikkan and her little family.

  15. Karen says:

He used to date models. He picked a princess for his ultimate trophe wife. She has terrible taste in men. If he took the title it would be the same that was offered to her last fiance. Which would be odd, esp for a man who is already established from his own family connections.

Now more important to gossip: Will Carl Philip marry sofia the reality-star-nude-model-jenna-jameson-kisser-turned-“charity-worker”?

  16. Talie says:

My God, Swedish royals have the best jewels.

  17. A says:

Feeling bad vibes from him too. Oh well, can’t wait to see the wedding, it should air on the telly I hope!

  18. lisa says:

i hope he isnt as douchey as he looks. ive always had a soft spot for princess maddie.

  19. Patrice says:

I love that these two have decided in favor of living a normal-albeit very privileged-life in the States. Madeleine is GORGE and he sounds like a total sweetheart ❤ These Swedish royal women seem to marry purely for love and choose very well!

  20. Angelic 20 says:

I don’t like Madeline at all,.she lives off Swedish tax payers but refuse to live in Sweden or do royal duties. No body knows what exactly she does in new York with her mom’s charity other then attending lavish upper east side parities and galas in the name of charity but Swedish tax payers still have to pay for her and even for her lavish royal wedding. She seems even more entitled then William in terms of enjoying all the benefits of being a royal but none of the responsibilities or work. Don’t like her lazy, entitled behaviour at all.

    • flan says:

      Me too.

And it would be fine if this gentleman doesn’t want any of the titles or responsibilities that go with being a Swedish royal, but then he should also not enjoy the benefits and connections.

  21. Kelly says:

Well, one thing us is certain; the Swedes have excellent genes. She is such a fresh-faced beauty.

  22. Quinn says:

He kind of looks like puffed up Brendan Frasier (sp?) to me.

    • So freaking much! Seriously, how did I not see that immediately? 😀

    • Violet says:

I couldn’t think of who he reminded me of, but you hit the nail on the head! The article doesn’t mention his age, but he appears much older and stodgier than her.

He looks like an arrogant douche, but hopefully her taste in men has improved and she’s not just settling because she’s 30 and thinks she needs to be married.

    • kristiner says:

      lmao! Yes! Brendon for sure.

It’s genetic. They pick douche looking guys.

The first time I saw Daniel I thought he was a douchy looking hipster. He looks old. He is and those glasses. But it’s clear now that he ADORES Victoria for her so maybe looks can be deceiving and this douche looking dude is genuine for Madeleine.

  23. bluhare says:

I’m sorry, but once I saw Victoria with that adorable baby, it was all over.

    That baby!!!!!! Her cardigan!!!

    • Angelic 20 says:

I know right! She is one of cutest babies I have seen and I love way Victoria dresses her like Harper Beckham, cute feminine and adorable all at the same time.

  24. Reece says:

I have to agree with some he does give off Wall St. D-bag but hopefully he isn’t.
Can we talk about the tiara in that pic? I mean…

  25. melmel says:

He looks swarmy. But could be totally nice. Love is subjective

  26. jamee draper says:

Everytime cb does a story on Sweden’s royalty all I can think of is”would Alexander Skarsgard curtsy if he met her?Would he even care about them? Would he recognize her in a line up? I wonder how big a deal they are to Swedish people.

    • m says:

Victoria is easily the most popular royal in Europe, so im sure our little Viking could pick her out.

  27. Sachi says:

I find it commendable that he refused a title. He’s not going to live in Sweden and won’t be working there. I also doubt he’d be taking advantage of the Swedish taxpayers’ money.

He has his own job and seems to be successful on his own.

Madde and Victoria’s brother Carl-Philip seems to be already engaged to a former reality TV star who has done nude photo shoots and has been taking her clothes off for the cameras since she was a teenager. She was at the latest event with the royal family and was included in all the formal photos. There’s no way she would have been allowed if she and Carl-Philip aren’t engaged/she hasn’t been accepted into the family.

The Swedish King himself is very sleazy. He’s been through scandals about cheating and having his friends bring him prostitutes.

Chris comes off smelling of roses compared to the family he’s marrying into.

  28. Alexandra says:

    @Quinn Read my mind!

  29. poof says:

    He looks douchey.

  30. Flower says:

As he holds duel British/American citizenship he has probably decided against accepting a title because firstly an American citizen is not allowed to accept a title “from a foreign King,Prince or State without the express permission of Congress”.

Secondly Britain does not officially recognise any foreign title held by a British national.

Thirdly and most importantly he plans to continue with his business enterprises , if he was to take a Swedish title linked to Madeleine it would mean he was then considered to be a member of the Royal family, members of the Swedish royal family are not allowed to hold positions of responsibility in any business or sit on the boards of commercial companies so that would pretty well put an end to his own career.

The titles he refused are Prince of Sweden with the rank of Royal Highness and/or Duke of Gastrikland and Halsingland (Madeleine is Duchess of these two provinces).
