‘The Dark Knight’, Brangelina big winners at People’s Choice

Big winners Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are so cool they didn’t even show up for the People’s Choice Awards, which is a bit of an insult. No worries, because enough big stars stepped up and joined in the first major awards show of the season. The People’s Choice Awards are actually voted on by the people, and I’ve always wondered if winners are told in advance so they’ll actually show up. Other winners included Reese Witherspoon, Will Smith and Katherine “Biting the Hand that Feeds Her” Heigel. People magazine has the run down.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie clearly have the people’s vote. The two were among the big winners at the 35th Annual People’s Choice Awards Wednesday night at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles. Pitt was named favorite leading man at the ceremony, while Jolie was voted favorite female action star.

While neither accepted their honors in the flesh, plenty of stars – including Carrie Underwood, Katherine Heigl and the hosts of Dancing with the Stars (winners of the favorite competition/reality show) – collected their trophies in person during the two-hour ceremony which was hosted by Queen Latifah.

Ellen DeGeneres was a good sport as she presented the first award of the night, filling in for Kate Hudson whom, she said, was stuck in traffic and “40 minutes away.” Said DeGeneres with a laugh: “That’s no way to sell a movie.” The talk show host then gave Adam Sandler the favorite funny male star award, and later picked up favorite talk show host herself.

Hudson did arrive in time to collect her award for favorite leading lady – and she took the stage with a triumphant whoop. Hudson also dedicated her award to son Ryder, who was celebrating his fifth birthday that night.

Additionally, Will Smith was a double winner, nabbing favorite male movie star and favorite male action star, while Reese Witherspoon was named favorite female movie star. “This year I won an award for having a baby throw up on me,” the Four Christmases star said on stage.

The night’s definitive winner, though, was The Dark Knight: The latest in the Batman franchise won a total of five awards, including favorite movie and favorite action movie. The movie’s star, Christian Bale, was named favorite superhero and was also recognized, along with the late Heath Ledger, in the favorite on-screen match up category.

Among the other big movie winners: Katherine Heigel’s 27 Dresses won favorite movie comedy and WALL-E took home the award for favorite family movie.

I really like when Queen Latifah is the host of any awards show – she’s funny without trying too hard, and she doesn’t make mean-spirited jokes. The People’s Choice also recognizes television shows and musical acts, and some of the big winners were Hugh Laurie for “House”, Christina Applegate for “Samantha Who?” and singer Carrie Underwood. The next big awards show is the Golden Globes, this Sunday. I wonder who will show up for that one?

i guess debra messing’s stomach band is really doing the trick for her. she’s looking wonderfully emaciated.

i love heigel’s hair, and LOVE Hudson’s dress. she always rocks the award shows even if she is a boring one-note actress. her fashion never is.

    Good for Brad and Angelina.

  3. Kaiser says:

Dakota Fanning is turning into a real beauty.

  4. bros says:

    not fair.

Hands down I knew Brad and Angelina would win this year they clearly are most deserving. Robin Williams win was also deserved, outstanding job. Don’t agree much with Reese’s win over Angelina though, Angie has been voted highest in all areas over the rest.

    EVERYONE LOVES LATIFAH!

  7. Starla says:

Very classy of Brad & Angie to show their appreciation to the fans by not attending.

This news will shake the J-P detractors’ world to its very core.

Fab pic of Queen Latifah, gorgeous dress.

  9. Zoe says:

@ geronimo: yeah, can’t wait for the hater fall-out on this one… the People’s Choice awards are rigged, right??
    *covers ears*

  10. geronimo says:

@Zoe – they bribed them with the ‘charity money’ for the twin pics!

  11. Susan says:

Kind of rude to their fans not to show. But after all they are royal and their fans small subjects bowing that their feet. And Angie does have some big feet to bow to! (Have you ever noticed how big they are?)

Thank goodness now all the Brad/Angie fans can give their bleeding fingers a break after voting none stop for days on their computer.

I didn’t know you could cast a vote for them on PCA or I would have voted. But I’m happy for Brad and Angelina. Brad had other commitments and we fans understand that Angelina was home with her children.

  13. teri says:

I think yesterday was Zaharas 4th birthday also. :0)
I’m sure their fans would understand them missing for something as special as their childs birthday.

Funny how whenever they hit the red carpet or give an interview, Brad and Ange are accused of selling their souls for p.r. Yet let them skip a single red carpet event and they’re accused of insulting their fans and being rude. Some people are so irrational it’s amusing.

    Happy Birthday to Z!

Katherine “Biting the Hand that Feeds Her” Heigel”?

Actually, she was right and had the balls to call it exactly what it was.

I kind of appreciate it that instead of scripted hypocricy, someone didn’t “play the game” in Hollywood and said what they think.

Also, I don’t think anyone “fed her”. I think she was charming and had an audience draw- so she actually help feed some other people.

too bad nikki cox looks like a muppet.

it seriously looks like jim henson has his hand in the back of her head.

  18. Jenna says:

I am beyond happy that House and Hugh Laurie got awards. Love him and that show!

  19. Susan says:

Journey; Angie and Brad have never been accused of selling their souls for p.r. when they hit the red carpet. That is their job and expected. All hollywood stars do that. They were accused of that when they sold their childrens pictures to people for milllions, when they sold “private” photos of Angie and the children to W, and when they talk about “private” things like tub time, Z holding poop as a joke etc.

  20. Jane says:

Glad about The Dark Knight, and Reese looks beautiful as usual.

  21. Codzilla says:

bros: Totally. Nikki looks like a nightmare. YIKES.

  22. me says:

I am so glad Reese kicked Angelina’s ass, nobody likes Angelina Holie, oops jolie. HOLIE PITT he he

    @ Journey & Susan

Journey – you are completely right on that…. how long did it take?

Susan – who are you kidding. All you do is criticize every thing they do.
