Anna Kendrick in Donna Karan at the Tonys: gorgeous or too fussy?

We have some photos from last night’s Tony Awards, hosted by the venerable Neil Patrick Harris. A complete list of winners is here, we’ll be focusing on some of the fashion and will bring you more later today. To start we have Anna Kendrick, looking gorgeous in a navy blue and black Donna Karan Atelier gown. The bodice and side train on this dress are a little fussy for me, but overall this is gorgeous. She reminds me a little of Kate Mara here, I think it’s her styling.

Did you know that Anna got her start on stage, in the musical High Society in 1998? She was nominated for a Tony Award for best actress for that role when she was just 13 years old.

Here’s Sally Field in dark green Georgio Armani. The dress is striking on her but I dislike the single sequin boob, that’s just bizarre. The asymmetric neckline makes it look like she’s popping out. She looks amazing otherwise though.

Bernadette Peters was also in dark green, in Donnna Karan Atelier. I love the criss-cross design of this strapless gown. She is really working it. She’s 65 years old. I would have put her at 20 years younger easily.

Cicely Tyson was in a ridiculous ruffled gown for which I don’t have a designer ID. That looks like a complicated dust ruffle. She earned the Tony for leading actress in a play, for the “The Trip to Bountiful.” It was a return to the stage for her after 30 years. In her acceptance speech she said she prayed for the role. “I really didn’t think it would happen again in my lifetime and I was pretty comfortable with that, except that I had this burning desire to do just one more. One more great role, I said. I didn’t want to be greedy. I just wanted one more, and it came to me with no effort on my part.

Cicely is shown with the lovely Patina Miller, who won leading actress in a musical, for “Pippin.” Patina is in a Zac Posen gown. Here’s another photo of her. I think I would like the dress better if the skirt was about half the volume.

Patina Miller is very pretty and the dress is nice.

  2. Lucy says:

I think all the dresses are hideous

  3. JenD says:

Anna Kendrick looked great. I agree the one-side-only sequin looked weird on Sally Field, but she still rocks it. A big fat no to Cicely Tyson’s dress.

  4. Deb says:

    Anna looks fabulous

  5. lisa says:

i think anna, bernadette and patina look nice

    sally’s dress isnt horrible

cecily’s dress is like one big origami

  6. Mary says:

Anna irritates me. Anybody notice how her voice breaks when she talks? It’s this irritating valley girl trail off at the end. I do think she has a nice singing voice though. She always seems to wear the same type of dress. She should be having fun at her age!

  7. Mary says:

by the Cecily’s dress is a thing of nightmares! It’s like it’s swallowing her up.

  8. KierneM says:

The dress Cicely is wearing is just fug, although she could rock that color on a less ridiculous gown. I’m totally with you on Patina’s skirt needing a trim. A bit too Barbie doll -ish. Anna’s dress suits her, and it’s worlds better than a certain former co-star’s very best red carpet attire.

  9. Dutch says:

Anna worked it. Plus she said on twitter last night that as long as she had her fancy hair her big brother couldn’t put her in a headlock.

  10. MisJes says:

Anna looks absolutely amazing, this is one of the best looks I’ve seen on her. And I think the bodice has just the right amount of drama, actually. Not too fussy at all.

Finally, she looks way better than I have ever seen Kata Mara look by the way. She certainly is much prettier, too.

  11. AlmondJoy says:

As far as I’m concerned, Cicely is a LEGEND. She’s older than my grandmother and can wear whatever she wants.

  12. Adrien says:

Cicely Tyson can never be too ruffly. Love Anna Kendric’s dress.

  13. Miss Kiki says:

Patina Miller’s face is exquisite. I have so much love for anna Kendrick as well. in fact I don’t think I have anything bad to say about anyone on this post. Even Cicely’s mad ass dress gets a pass.

  14. Hakura says:

My GOD, Bernadette is 65?! I’m speechless, genuinely speechless. Incredible.

The only thing I really don’t like about Anna’s dress if that stripe of a different color on the bodice. It doesn’t seem to belong with the blues. Sally Field, while rocking it every other way, did NOT pick a winner.

    • Lady Satan says:

Bernadette Peters is the poster-woman for aging gracefully – she looks incredible!

I’m sure she has had at least *some* work done, but it is SO refreshing to see someone who goes for subtlety. No obvious frozen-botox face, and if she’s had fillers I can’t tell. Lovely!

      • Feebee says:

Don’t you have to look like you’re aging to be aging gracefully? 🙂

Sally Field is aging gracefully. You’re right she’s incredible, believably incredible. She should sell it, she’d make a fortune.

      • ctkat1 says:

Hollywood actresses need to be tackling her in the aisle to get the name of her doctor, because that is some well-done work. She looks like herself, just a decades younger version of herself.

  15. Jag says:

Totally agree with all your comments, cb!

  16. Mean Hannah says:

Cicely can wear whatever she wants, and the only thing I don’t like is that she and the drama of her dress are lessened next to newcomer Patina’s giant ball gown.

  17. GoodCapon says:

That dress is too fussy, but she looks very pretty here. She has a beautiful face shape.

  18. Charlotte says:

I LOVE Bernadette Peters. I want her to play Helena Bonham Carter’s mum in a dark comedy.

  19. Micki says:

    Anna looks lovely.
And I’d wear Sally Field’s dress gladly.

  20. Miss so and so says:

poor ceciley she was attacked and eaten by purple ruffles!

  21. wowsa says:

Everybody pretty much looks a mess, but Patina’s face is beautiful. Sally could have used some sleep, Anna could have used a better tailor, and just WTH was Cicely thinking?!

  22. lucy2 says:

    I like Anna and Bernadette’s.
Sally looks amazing but the sequined thing isn’t great on the dress.

  23. ctkat1 says:

Every single year there is a ton of press and hand-wringing over diversity at the Oscars, and here we have the Tony’s, where both Best Director awards went to women, and four of the eight Acting awards were won by African-American actors.

I don’t know why, when Hollywood is constantly saying that they can’t find more women directors and more good roles for non-white actors, Broadway manages.

  24. JC says:

Holy crap. Bernadette Peters looks freaking amazing.

  25. Chordy says:

This post is girl crush central! Anna Kendrick! Sally Field! Bernadette Peters!!!! CECILY TYSON!!!! SQUEEEE. I’m not too familiar with Patina Miller yet, but she’s gorgeous, looks like a dancer, and I’m assuming she’s amazing to make it into this post. This is basically 3 legends and 2 legends in the making.

  26. moon says:

Men. Anna looks like she’s going to prom. Sally Field’s dress is pretty awesome.

  27. Camille (TheOriginal) says:

I’ve never thought that Anna was very attractive, but she looks gorgeous here! Best look on her- ever.

  28. AintMisbehavin says:

Thanks for covering the Tonys. It’s probably the best award show on television and features some of the finest talent around.

While the dresses are not my faves I think all the ladies look fab.

Patina is the BEST!!! She’s a great talent and I hope she continues to rock Broadway and beyond.
