Lauren Conrad on negativity: ‘You realize it doesn’t matter. It’s so simple’

I do like to check in with Lauren Conrad every now and then. She’s not awful, she’s rather harmless, and she’s built a small empire doing really basic things, like writing cheesy books and designing budget clothes. Eh. There are worse things I guess. Anyway, LC covers the new issue of Marie Claire and HOLY BANGS. I wonder if these are clip-on bangs or if she really did change her hair? I blame Michelle Obama for the prevalence of bad bangs these days. While LC’s bangs are flat-out terrible, her hair definitely looks like a wig here. Like, the kind of wig Taylor Swift would wear. Here are some highlights from her Marie Claire profile:

On why she started writing: “I only ever got to tell half of my story. People are very quick to judge these days, especially behind the anonymity of a screen name. It’s very easy to say, ‘I hate her, I hate what she wore, she seems mean.’ But you’re only seeing a small fraction of her life.”

On negativity: “There is always gonna be a little bit of…negativity, which just comes with the territory. You realize it doesn’t matter. It’s so simple, but it’s a very hard lesson to learn. At the end of the day, it doesn’t really affect you in any way.”

On bitchy cable-TV shows and the club life: “It feels done for me. I’m OK with it being done…I destroyed my voice when I moved to L.A. There are polyps all over my vocal chords because I was in a lot of loud places. If you listen to the first episode of Laguna, my voice is completely different.”

On boyfriend William Tell: “He is very good for me because we have a lot in common as far as where we grew up. It’s the first time I’m with someone and I’m not explaining things. He also has experience in the entertainment industry, so he understands a lot of things that people don’t always get.”

Listen to all of the stuff going on in her empire:

In a few hours, she will board a plane to meet with the New York design team of Kohl’s, which puts out her LC Lauren Conrad line. She is also the sole investor in another line, the contemporary Paper Crown, and has written best-selling novels, including the just-published Infamous, based on her experiences that reveal a fuller picture of herself than slyly edited 20-minute episodes ever allowed. Her next venture is an e-commerce site called The Little Market, launching in September, which will sell artisanal crafts made by women from around the world, providing them with opportunities to support their families. She’s doing it with friend Hannah Taylor Skvarla, an advocate for Human Rights Watch. “We’ve been to Bali and El Salvador and Africa and India and Nepal,” Conrad says. “Hannah is good about educating me about not just the beautiful places we go to but also the issues people there face. I think when you’ve been fortunate, you have a moral obligation to do things for others.”

[From Marie Claire]

God, she has a lot going on. And while none of it is going to save the world, I do give her credit for having more ambition and staying power than most of the reality stars of her generation. And I give her credit for trying to expand her brand to empower and engage women for the betterment of society. Damn it, I kind of like LC. What’s happening to me?!

Hang on a minute. Her boyfriend’s name is William Tell? As in, the Swiss folk hero? From the apple-shot? That’s priceless.

  2. teehee says:

True that, the headline. 🙂 I also like her- her beauty blog is good and I check on it every now and then for some ideas or techniques. She is a typical person doing what she loves, who just happens to be ‘famous’ for having been associated with a show.

  3. A says:

I forgot about her years ago.

  4. don't kill me i'm french says:

    who is she?

    • Jenny says:

Nobody special. She looks like mix of LiLo in her fornarina commercial and Taylor Swift. Why? Doesn’t she have her own, unique style? (eye rolling).

      • xploxite says:

I used to watch her show and i liked her alot because she was the level headed of all of them.
someone mentioned about her blog, thank you for that.

  5. Enn says:

I’ve loved LC since Laguna. Her clothes are really cute, too!

    • FLORC says:

I like her too. The clothes aren’t my style, but cute. She’s got a fantastic work ethic! She never stops and even though her image is not to be the super intelligent business woman she is while still holding onto her innocent image from The Hills. Se doesn’t embarrass herself and she works for her money. I can’t see anything bad with this girl.

    • Barhey says:

I’m obsessed with LC’s style for casual day wear. It’s always classy and cute, never trashy. She’s my pinterest crush =)

  6. Buckwild says:

I like her! I watched her on Laguna Beach and she’s been able to retain some stability and a normal personality while growing up. Seems like she would be a cool chick to befriend.

  7. Micki says:

    1. Respect for her “The Little Market” project. It may not save the world but is a nice touch.

2.If you’re in the entertaining business you have a product to sell, that’s why you hustle and hope that people will bite. So allow them please to have different taste and opinion and be vocal about it.
    “There will always be “negativity””
Yes, and people express it by being “judgmental”
You can’t voice an opinion without a judgment.
I agree there are sites with outright profane tone. To bear with them is the celebrity fate. That doesn’t make all the critics though unjustified(talking on principle)

  8. carol says:

ahh I like her California girl look better than her bangs and heavy eye makeup

  9. Lucy2 says:

Those photos don’t even look like her.
At least she is doing something, not just hanging around for the next reality show or being awful for attention.

    • JenD says:

Yeah, I wouldn’t have even guessed it was her if I had just seen the pictures without the article.

    • Just Me says:

I saw these photos yesterday and did a double take. Agree. Doesn’t look like her at all.

    • TheTruthHurts says:

I think they airbrushed it like crazy and changed the shape of her face. She still looks gorgeous and I like the bangs, which can make you look entirely different, but yeah, the mag did something to the photo.

  10. Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

I actually really like Lauren but why does everyone think that getting these kinds of bangs is for every face shape? It doesn’t make her any less pretty but it just kinda sits there on her head not really enhancing her beauty.

  11. Yelly says:

I like her. But I don’t like those photos.

  12. Lulu says:

Well i beg to differ, i never liked her on the hills. she was ALWAYS falling out with a friend every week. at what point do you blame yourself?i think deep down she was a mean girl and didn’t even realize it. but she sounds like she has matured so good for her.

    • Emily says:

Uhh well not really… She ‘fell out’ with Heidi after she did some horrible things to Lauren… She had some issues with other friends after they did bad things to her as well…

    • idk says:

That show was completely scripted, the fights and fall outs were all fake (the actors on the show have admitted it).

As a side note, I like the cover shot of her, the bangs look good on her (in my opinion).

  13. Emily says:

Lauren is an amazingly beautiful girl but they’ve photoshopped her to oblivion! That is not a pretty look up there… but every other photo I’ve seen recently is lovely!
    Please stop, magazines!!

  14. hadleyb says:

I like her fringe, they work on her they didn’t work on Michelle.

Some people can pull off fringe, some can’t. Just like some can’t pull off no fringe and should always have fringe. Please Christina Ricci always have fringe, or anyone with a huge forehead have fringe. lol

And if you don’t want to do or can’t spend the $$ on botox, just fringe it!

    • Itsa Reallyme says:

I like her bangs. I think she looks really pretty. I agree with you hadley, some of us need bangs and they aren’t automatically ugly on everyone. I get tired of reading constantly about how all bangs are a mistake.

      • Michelle says:

I agree with all the complaining about bangs. AND, Kohls isn’t budget, I’m sure a lot of us Celebitches shop there.

  15. TheOriginalKitten says:

I’ve always liked her…she always seemed smarter and more level-headed than her reality TV star contemporaries.

  16. AmyLynne says:

I love Lauren! So happy to see some coverage for her. She’s got the nice little niche market, I love her hair tips, and she gets to do all kinds of stuff she loves. Lucky girl.

  17. jules says:

I love Lauren, so for her sake I really, really hope those are clip-in bangs.

  18. Dani says:

I love her. Her Khol’s line is actually VERY cute, stylish and even a kind of mature, and decently priced too. Also LOVE that she’s dating William Tell from Something Corporate. He’s actually studying for his Law Degree and I’m fangirling over him all over again like I’m 14.

    • j.eyre says:

I think her line is pretty cute too. I am a bit old for most of it but I keep trying.

Has anyone read any of her books? They are fiction, right? Are they any good – like for a beach read or something?

  19. Shelly says:

I like Lauren. She’s one of the few from The Hills who actually had and has a work ethic. She never seemed to be out for an easy buck (like Spencer and Heidi) or seemed content living off her parents (like most of the rest of them) and always seemed like she wanted to build something and work hard and build a career, which she has done.

  20. Dedrie says:

Watch Tea house of the August Moon, why these unfortunate people they want to help by providing them with stuff to do.. shouldn’t become manufacturing slaves to make a bunch of junk to sell thru a sly dealer who always greatly profits from their arts and talents, but help them build the community and invest in the long term future… educate them to stand alone, manage their towns and state with higher skill jobs that don’t ravage and pollute their war zone lands and show their families and children how it’s done in the rest of the world….

  21. Nerd Alert says:

I never watched The Hills but I’ve always been impressed that she was able to make a name for herself outside of reality shows, even after she admitted it was basically all scripted. Honestly? I like a lot of her Kohl’s line, too. “Budget” though it may be, most of the country is actually on a budget, and there are some good pieces. I wouldn’t spend money on designer clothes even if I had enough to, though.

Anyhoo, I can relate to the positivity thing, it goes beyond celebrity on the internet. It’s a hard lesson to come to terms with, but so important.

    • Itsa Reallyme says:

““Budget” though it may be, most of the country is actually on a budget, and there are some good pieces. I wouldn’t spend money on designer clothes even if I had enough to, though.”

      Exactly and Amen!

      • Michelle says:

Yay, happy to see other posters defending “budget” Kohls. I really bristled when I read that!!

      • Nerd Alert says:

        Right! I’m a Kohl’s girl for sure.

I think people who are willing to pay hundreds or thousands for clothes have effed up priorities, regardless of income bracket.

  22. Anna says:

Am I the only one who thinks LC looks like Nicole Richie in these pix? I think the hair is working really well on her.

  23. Christo says:

    She has new veneers.

  24. Norman says:

I adore Lauren Conrad. She has a nice body, she is successful and she has it going on. I never really understood the haters on why they hate but I suppose it comes with territory coupled with the sore relations that has emanated with a lot of “The Hills” cast members, something she had no fault in but has inadvertently made her look bad. She is also a fine humanitarian and cares for others. You go LC!

  25. Fact says:

Love this girl..she look better with ages and bang.

  26. LittleMissy says:

I went to kohl’s and came across her line…i said its probably for skinny white girls…im latino and curvy…but a pair of her jeans were so cute i had to try on and….they fit me like a glove!!!! loved them!!!! I had to grab another pair

  27. Sarah says:

    Love her.
As for her having fallings-out with friends on tv, she’s said in many interviews over the years that she has a group of friends that don’t appear on tv. Some (like Lo) were on Laguna and pop up here and there but she has others that are just separate. She seems pretty grounded for someone who grew up so wealthy, in a wealthy area, who then starred in two reality shows. She’s much more relatable – in my opinion – than anyone else from The Hills.
