Jennifer Carpenter & Seth Avett only got together after he separated from his wife…?

I was actually surprised to the reaction to yesterday’s story about Jennifer Carpenter maybe/probably “homewrecking” the marriage of Seth Avett of the Avett Brothers. I think I underestimated the fanbase of the Avett Brothers, and I underestimated the built-in hatred for Jennifer Carpenter. Which is weird, because I’ve always liked Carpenter a lot. Most of problems I had with the Deb character on Dexter were because of the writing, not Jennifer’s performance (although I stopped watching Dexter after the complete mess that was Season 6).

Anyway, the basic story yesterday was that Jennifer is the reason Seth Avett and his wife separated and that Jennifer was basically a groupie who traveled all around the country to bone her (married) man. Sources told Radar that Seth’s wife was devastated and that Seth and Jennifer’s affair had nearly broken up the band. To make matters worse, there was one more piece of damning evidence: the Avett Brothers’ new album is called The Carpenter. Obvs. Interestingly enough, Jennifer’s people went out there yesterday and tried to do some damage control:

Jennifer Carpenter’s love life on Showtime’s Dexter may be a bloody disaster, but in real life, the 33-year-old actress has found happiness with folk singer Seth Avett, of the Avett Brothers. A source close to the couple tells Us Weekly exclusively that the two recently started dating after years of being just friends.

“Jennifer met Seth about four years ago at a concert,” the insider says. “She loves music and has always been a big supporter of the band. The relationship developed over the past few months.”

Carpenter and the 32-year-old musician “have a lot in common and seem to have a similar sense of humor,” the source adds. “There is an ease about their relationship. Friends and family couldn’t be happier for them. They are a good match.”

As for the rumors that the Dexter actress (previously wed to costar Michael C. Hall) broke up Avett’s marriage to Susan Avett?

“They were friends for a long time, but the relationship did not start until he and his wife were separated,” the source explains. “There is no bad blood there.”

Indeed, Susan tells Us exclusively that “there are inaccuracies” in reports about her relationship with Avett and his subsequent romance with Carpenter. “It saddens me to hear of such unfounded speculation surrounding the end of our marriage, which is in and of itself a difficult time for both of us,” she says. “I ask that for our sake, and the sake of our family and friends, that everyone respect our privacy during this time.”

The eighth and final season of Dexter premieres Sunday, June 30, on Showtime.

[From Us Weekly]

Huh. Did Susan just fall on her sword for her estranged husband, or is that some kind of coded message? Susan doesn’t outright deny the claims, just that the claims are “unfounded”. Parsing, parsing. As for the source who specifically claims that Carpenter and Avett only started up when he separated from Susan? Yeah. Sure. At least that’s what Seth told Jennifer, amirite? “Baby, it’s over between me and my wife. We’re separated. Shh, I gotta take this call, it’s my… um… brother…? Don’t say anything.”

Every person who was hurling sh*t at her yesterday had better apologise!

    • DSS says:

BS….She is just trying to save face. I don’t believe for a moment that the stories yesterday were false.

  2. GoldenState says:

Wow, pretty bold….Naming an album after the woman you’re having a liaison with?! What was his wife thinking? She must have been in crazy amounts of denial. That’s insane!!

    • BK says:

The name The Carpenter does not come from Jennifer but rather the title track of the alblum The Once and Future Carpenter. They have been playing that track for years- long before Jennifer would have been in his life- as they work through songs live sometimes for years before adding it to an alblum.

      • Whitney Warlick says:

Yes, but that song was originally called “The Gambler” and was renamed “The Once and Future Carpenter” around late 2011/early 2012 I think.

    • Orplem says:

Not into commenting on the alleged relationship, merely regarding the supposed naming of the album. Almost all of the songs on the album deal with life and mortality, and The Once and Future Carpenter is laden with messages about death. With songs written by Seth and Scott, you must look more deeply than titles to find meaning…. And even then there can be multiple interpretations to any particular song (I.e. February Seven)

  3. irishserra says:

    Yeeaah… I buy that. (Not)

Also, does she have an awesome personality or something? She is one odd looking bird.

  4. marie says:

I’m not entirely sure why you’re surprised Kaiser, most people have a problem with cheaters. And after reading all the posts from yesterday, I believe there’s a bit of overlap.

  5. Tig says:

    SUUURE- apologize? No.

  6. Original A says:

The wife wouldn’t have spoken to US Weekly if Jennifer was her husband’s other woman, in my opinion. It’s possible they had some sort of open thing going on, though. And as someone said, The Carpenter is a track.

  7. Keats says:

Red shirt is Scott Avett. If he’s also been unfaithful to his wife, I’m just going to dissolve into a sadness puddle.

  8. nmat says:

Um… in that picture of him with the slicked-back hair, he looks EXACTLY like her.

  9. Micki says:

I’m sorry, my English comprehesion skills are miserable because I don’t read an affair denial in wife’s statement. It’s sort of beating about the bush

  10. Amy Tennant says:

I always kind of liked Jennifer, too. Only a few people know the truth of the matter, so I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. It costs me nothing. I can speculate, but I wasn’t there!

On a side note, I’m a fan of the Dexter books but never really watched the series. Is Deb’s character in the show written differently from the character in the books?

Also side note, I cannot see the resemblance between Seth and Jennifer.

  11. MademoiselleRose says:

Wow, I reckon if she had a beard and no makeup they’d look like twins. Part of the reason I stopped watching Dexter was because of her, I couldn’t stand her.

  12. Feebee says:

Friends and family couldn’t be happier for them? Ha ha that’s not what it sounded like in yesterday’s story.

Look, I understand cheating’s bad and it causes massive heartbreak but can’t we be grown ups about a situation we don’t really know the insides of? We’re not inside the marriage or inside his head to know wtf he was thinking but I think the amount of vitriol leveled at him and Carpenter yesterday was OTT.

  13. mercyme says:

I’ll take his ex-wife’s word over tabloid reports. They assumed wrongly about something as basic as an album title (thought that part sounded odd), so who know what else they got wrong. Even if she’s “falling on her sword” for her ex, that’s want she wants the public record to be about her private situation and I respect that.

I have no personal dislike of Jennifer — don’t know her (obviously) and haven’t been into watching Dexter for a couple years (it was the season with Stiles that turned me off the show, ironically) — but my opinions on adulterers and their accomplices and enablers stands.

  14. Bodhi says:

I’ve been a fan of the Avett Brothers for YEARS (not so much lately, as I don’t really care for their newer sound, but I digress) & this is just such a bummer.

On another note, I LOVE hearing their song Hard Worker in the new AmEx commercial. THAT is the sound I love so much

  15. Violet says:

“Inaccuracies”? Doesn’t sound like Susan fell on the sword — it sounds like she was pressured into denying her husband’s affair and she couldn’t quite bring herself to do it. All “inaccuracies” means is that maybe the timing was off by a day or two, or that it was “unfounded speculation” that Jennifer was a fulltime groupie when she actually occasionally misses one of his concerts.

Jennifer Carpenter has a history of disrespecting marital vows, her own and other people’s. I’m inclined to believe that Seth was still very much with his wife when the affair with Jennifer started.

Ugh, I can’t stand cheaters. I just hope they didn’t pass any STDs to Susan and that she winds up with a good settlement.

  16. Holden says:

    I think she’s hot *ducks*.

  17. A Seth fan says:

The picture of the man in the red shirt is actually his brother Scott.

As for the story. Yeeeeeeah. Sure. AFTER they separated.

    Messy.

  18. peetalimbs says:

When I read the initial post yesterday my mind immediately flashed back to this blind item:

    Blind Items Revealed
    April 18, 2011

#1 # 2 & #3 – This mostly movie B- list actress has had something strange happen to her. Most of the time when someone cheats on someone with another actor in this town, nothing really happens. Apparently though, the scorned C+ television actress has made it her own personal crusade to tell everyone who will listen about how badly she was hurt by the cheating actress because of what she had done for her ex. She of course also blames her ex, the A- list television actor from a hit show. The crusade has made the two cheaters kind of pariahs among their peers.

    #1 – B- movie list actress
    #2 – C+ television actress
    #3 – A- list television actor

    #1 – Julia Stiles
    #2 – Jennifer Carpenter
    #3 – Michael C Hall

They got together AFTER the separation? Yeah, right. Only fools believe that.

    • jane says:

Is it just me ? What I read from that is that M.Hall cheated on Jennifer with J.Stiles and Jennifer was bitter about it, especially considering she stood by him during his illness.
Does being bitter about being cheating on means that she is a cheater too ?

      • peetalimbs says:

She went out of her way to destroy the careers of ‘cheaters’ when she herself turns out to be one, after the fact.

I don’t see what’s so hard to understand.

  19. AvettGal says:

The photo with the American flags in the background is Scott, not Seth!

    • bettek says:

Agree! I’ve seen many places where Scott and Seth are mixed up in both pictures and reporting. Also, Carpenter refers to a song on the album Scott wrote. Still a bad choice for a title in hindsight!

  20. bettek says:

Jennifer hasn’t shown much class or respect! Her tweets as this story broke were about cartwheels and trampolines. She’s doing cartwheels as a marriage dissolves and a family loses a member? Wow! Susan Avett was a sister in law, daughter in law and aunt. Very sad as a lot was lost, no matter how this went down between Jennifer and Seth. Not smart as she’s no Angelina Jolie and probably won’t be able to carry this off. I imagine it will hurt her professionally and personally.

  21. dbstandish says:

The “only got together after” is a lie Seth has been telling. Spooky that Jennifer spent so much time and energy to go after a married man. Totally stunning that he slammed everyone by naming the album after his nasty one.
