Shakira freely admits motherhood is tough: ‘I’m still trying to figure it out’

Shakira

Shakira covers the July issue of Elle to promote her role as a judge on NBC’s “The Voice” with pretty good timing since the season finale is steadily approaching and is set to air on June 18. The finale itself will feature Bruno Mars, Florida Georgia Line, Nelly, and — get this — Cher. Even from a non-watcher of the show, I have to admit that’s a pretty impressive lineup for a reality competition program.

In Elle’s photoshoot, Shakira is going for sultry and playful, and she’s so pretty, but I will never stop complaining about her straw-like blonde hair. She just looks so much better as a brunette, and I understand the need to experiment, but this blonde has been intact for years now. The interview (at least from the excerpts that have been released thus far) isn’t anything special. Shakira touches upon motherhood and her relationship with Spanish soccer star Gerard Pique:

On the male coaches of “The Voice: “In general, I think I’ve treated the boys with mercy.”

On her relationship with Gerard Pique: “He has his own world and that’s actually one of the healthiest things about the relationship. I know that he’s the one person who is with me not because of any interest other than the love than unites us. There’s nothing I can offer him beyond my womanhood — does that word exist in English?”

On motherhood: “I’m still trying to figure it out. And I have a feeling I will try to do the same for the rest of my life. Some people put it like it’s very idyllic, some people put it like it’s a torturing experience, but it’s not quite one thing or the other. It’s like life – it comes with everything.”

On her future in music: “I have no idea of where I want to go musically, but I’m fine that way. I don’t need to remain faithful to any concept, you know.”

It’s a welcome sight to see that Shakira isn’t getting all preachy and thinking she’s an expert mother after just giving birth in January to her son, Milan. She’s no Gisele Bundchen for sure, but I’m glad that Shak decided to stop whining about not taking any maternity leave. That was a bit ridiculous to complain about when she flat-out chose to work immediately after her baby was born. Also, this hair is crazy.

You hate the hair? I don’t mind it! BUT yes, even a darker blonde would look healthier than this straw-white blonde! Girlfriend needs some argan oil, stat.

“Perteneciste a una raza antigua de pies descalzos y de suenos blancos.. fuiste polvo, polvo eres piensa que el hierro siempre al calor es blando!!!” Shakira, Pies descalzos

    LOVE HER!!

Yea! I love all her old spanish songs!

Me too. She was much more profound and likable in her early days. She comes across pretty shallow since she has major success in the USA and is with Pique.

And what a joke that she assumes he doesn’t benefit from her! Fame?! Hello? He was some soccer player before, rich of course, but not that famous worldwide. Now he’s with an international star. In my opinion it’s pretty clear that he’s with her because she’s super famous. Plus he cheated on her, what a douche.

Shakira is one of my favorite artists. I agree I dont like her hair blond. She looks better brunette. As far as motherhood, you learn as you go.

  4. helen says:

I think she may suffer from a light postnatal depression, from what i’ve heard her say about motherhood. That’s normal.

As far as her hair is concerned, that’s certainly a wig, an awful one, and her hair needs to become darker and healthier

    Aww, I love her!

I’m in the same boat as far as my thoughts toward motherhood. I may have to steal her comment and pretend I made it =)

Funny thing is, that second dress, with the chain mail (can’t think of any other way to describe it)…that’s the same dress that Gisele wore to the Met Gala…with the spike heels.

  8. Madpoe says:

Why does her hair remind me of Tina Turner?

  9. SuperSteph says:

Shakira has always been my favourite female artist – she can sing, dance like a bellydance superstar, speaks 5 languages, plays 8 instruments, and is an active philanthropist with a genius IQ. She runs her own charity and is the Unicef Embassador and speaks to Harvard grads etc.

She’s the real deal! I admit, I cringed at some of her She-Wolf stuff as she doesn’t need to take the over-sexy route – she’s just naturally a very sexy woman.

  10. SuperSteph says:

Oh, and the hair is real. Her natural hair is thick and very curly, she just dyes is blonde. I prefer her as a darker blonde.

  11. cella says:

Anyone else notice how weird her right leg looks?

  12. Mew says:

Her vocal teacher told her that she sounds like a goat when she’s singing.. it was cute at first but after a while it just got booring and then annoying to me. Totally meh and bleh. Well, good luck enjoying motherhood Shak!
