Scarlett Johansson covers the first issue of Vanity Fair France: budget or lovely?

Scarlett Johansson covers the premiere issue of Vanity Fair France. Can you believe that France never had their own edition of Vanity Fair all this time? Weird. Anyway, I don’t think much of the photoshoot – ScarJo looks pretty boring and I usually think she’s overrated as a model. I’m assuming they were aiming for a “Young Catherine Deneuve” vibe, but I think we Americans need to acknowledge that we’re never going to produce an American woman who can pull off the Deneuve vibe.

Michel Denisot, the new editorial director of Vanity Fair France, said ScarJo “has every quality imaginable — the elegance, beauty, wit and impertinence that would make her a perfectly decent Parisian if she decides to move permanently into the apartment she has bought in Paris not far from here.” Wait, what? ScarJo bought an apartment in Paris?! That must be because she’s dating that Frenchman, Romain Dauriac. I bet she keeps the apartment longer than she keeps the boyfriend, amirite?

By the way, I think many French people might find Scarlett a bit impertinent and self-absorbed these days, considering she recently filed a lawsuit against a French author and publisher for using her name in association with a character in a fictional book. The author doesn’t call the character Scarlett Johansson, the character is merely described as looking a lot like ScarJo:

Scarlett Johansson is seeking to avenge the unauthorized use of her name in a French novel in a suit filed against publisher JC Lattes. She’s seeking compensation and damages from the “breach and fraudulent use of personal rights,” as well as a ban on “future transfer of rights and adaptations of the book.”

In the novel The First Thing We Look At, a woman shows up at the door of a mechanic in the northern village of Somme seeking help. At first the mechanic believes she is ‘Scarlett Johansson,’ though sixty pages later it is revealed she is not the actress but simply a doppelganger named Jeanine Foucaprez.

Author Gregoire Delacourt told newspaper Le Figaro that he was “stunned” when he was informed of the suit Friday morning, and also noted that he compared the main male character to Ryan Gosling and his boss to Gene Hackman in the book as an almost immediate way to invoke recognition of characteristics for readers.

“This corresponds with the fantasies of our times. All these famous people live with us,” he said, noting that many personal details of Johansson’s love life have been revealed on the Internet and the public feels as if it knows her. “But I wrote a book of fiction. My character is not Scarlett Johansson, it is Jeanine Foucaprez!”

He describes the novel as an exploration of the “dictatorship of appearances and the true beauty of women,” and says he chose Johansson, currently the face of Dolce & Gabbana and previously Louis Vuitton, because she is considered the “epitome of beauty today.”

The First Thing We Look At has been a best-seller in France since its release on March 20.

[From The Hollywood Reporter]

If the fictional character was more broadly associated with ScarJo the celebrity, and if the character was actually a derogatory depiction (like, if the character was a child molester or something), I would have some sympathy for Scarlett in this situation. But as it is… not so much. She’s a public figure and this is fair use. I think if the lawsuit was filed in America, it would be thrown out completely, but I don’t know how the French courts deal with this kind of nuisance lawsuit.

    She looks good.

    • Decloo says:

I agree. She looks so trashy when she has really blonde hair and really red lips. She’s more sexy-looking than pretty. She’s got terrible style too, like on the red carpet.

  2. SmokeyBlues says:

Oh, another photoshoot in which ScarJo has zero expression on her face. How surprising.

  3. V4Real says:

She looks ok; photoshopped like everyone else. I know some people don’t like her but I don’t feel one way or the other about her.

    • Kosmos says:

Flattering pics, but hugely photo shopped to make her look this good. She could move away and never make another movie because she has always seemed unfriendly and snooty compared with other more likable actresses.

  4. Kiddo says:

She’s unrecognizable on the cover shot.

  5. Tony says:

She’s hot. One of the few women in Hollywood that I find very attractive.

I’m not digging the hairstyle though.

  6. allons-y alonso says:

    dead eyes? Check
    annoyingly vacant expression? Check.
    mouth open? Check

    ….yup, standard ScarJo.

AND, is it just me, or does she looks like Blake Lively in the first photo?

    • Tony says:

Not even close. Scarlett completely crushes Blake in the looks department. She’s more feminine too.

      • allons-y alonso says:

I’m not necessarily talking about beauty, I’m just saying there’s a resemblance between the 2 in this photo but i think it’s mostly the makeup. I don’t care for either of them.

    • stellalovejoydiver says:

      Both had nose jobs, too.

    • Mam says:

Yes she strikes the same pose as Blake

  7. Gwen says:

She looks like Lohan on the cover.

  8. marie says:

pretty, but not a fan of the napkin bib.

    • loveisthecoal says:

That was my first thought…I’m assuming it’s part of the dress, but it really does look like a napkin! What a bizarre design!

    • Anna says:

I think the cover shot is divine, but yes, that lobster bib is atrocious.

  9. Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

Tried to give this one a fair judgement by looking at the rest of the photos and I know this will be said a lot in this post but her expression does not change –

  10. Melibea4ever says:

She looks tired and has dead eyes don’t see the appeal at all

  11. Mew says:

Nice cover but where in there is Scarlett Johansson?

  12. Lupe says:

She kinda loses me in her editorial shoots. In candids you can see how lovely and unique her face really is. Here she looks beautiful, but not much different than your average fashion model.

What’s up with her upper lip in the first shot? Is that a shadow? Smeared lipstick? She really doesn’t look like herself at all in that one.

    • Original A says:

I agree. I find her to be a unique beauty, but it doesn’t always translate well in photo shoots.

  13. TG says:

I find her beautiful and there is something about her that I can’t turn away from. I like her in her movies. I mean there are a lot of very attractive people but they don’t have a magnetic power like she does. For me anyway, I know not everyone agrees. That stupid lawsuit though is quickly killing any like I have for her.

  14. Cazzee says:

    Vacant.

  15. MisJes says:

She looks gorgeous, as always. I like Scarlett because I think she is who she is, and she makes no apologies for that. She’s a strong lady.

  16. epiphany says:

Oh, for the days when fashion models graced the cover of fashion magazines…not celebrities.
Scarjo’s modeling is as interesting as her acting.#NOT

    • TheOneAndOnlyOnly says:

Agree and you’re one of many with that desire; was on the fashion spot recently looking at Vogue covers from the 90s – Great stuff compared to all these cheeseball celeb covers – You mean to tell me there are no beautiful interesting French models/actresses that could have made the cover?

  17. nina says:

I’m in Germany and there’s no German Version of Vanity Fair either..there used to be one but it bombed

    • ParisPucker says:

interesting. Any thoughts as to why? I think this mag offers a perfect balance of what one looks for in a ‘zine: good articles; fashion; photos; gossip…etc. Why didn’t the Germans respond to it? I t’s my favorite magazine!

  18. DreamyK says:

How much weight has she lost? I thought at first the cover photoshopped her curves out, but then looked at her pics for the Tony’s this month and she looks like she’s dropped about 20lbs.

Beautiful girl but dead-eyed. Where is the sparkle in her eye? She needs a talking to from RDJ. Now that man has a twinkle in his eye and a hidden smile 🙂

  19. Marty says:

She looks like Ivanka Trump in these photos.

  20. Nerd Alert says:

Well she’s very pretty, that’s for sure, but she’s no model. It seems like it’s really hard for her to take a picture without the dead eyes. It’s like the opposite of KStew, who can often take a pretty picture but has dead eyes acting.

I was neutral on her until I read about the lawsuit. Now she’s at -1 with me.

  21. Dawn says:

I think she looks lovely. I don’t think she had dead eyes at all. With that said I am so over Vogue and Anna Wintour that I will never buy another copy of it. Ever.

  22. onegirlup says:

Does she look pretty? Yes. Does she look like Scarlett Johansson? No.

    giddy up.

  23. dahlianoir says:

I bought it, her photoshoot is boring and the rest is mainly fashion ads. The articles are ok but not exceptionnal. Wait and see I guess.

  24. alison8761 says:

She kind of looks like Amber Heard in that last pic. And for some reason, Amber Heard is so generic looking to me. I understand she’s “pretty” but there’s no spark there.

  25. I think she’s one of the most beautiful women in Hollywood. And no, it’s not just because people always tell me I look like her… only a little 😀

  26. wonderwoman21 says:

That cover is awful! And per usual Johansson fails to deliver

  27. raincoaster says:

It is lovely in part because it looks so little like ScarJo.

  28. ParisPucker says:

errr…why not put a FRENCH icon on their first cover instead of ScarJo?!? *Confused*

I heart Vanity Fair – great magazine that covers fashion to politics and sassy & clever commentaries (R.I.P. Christopher Hitchens). I lived in Paris for a bit and I’d be interested what the Frenchies response to this choice is. As a Paris-ite, I would be none to pleased…though she is looking hot in these pix.
