Miranda Kerr new Fall ’13 Mango ads are supposedly ‘gritty & punk’: for real?

Back in December of last year, Miranda Kerr did some kind of photocall/announcement thing for Mango. She had been named the latest face of the brand, and Miranda was trying to sell it like her life depended on it. It was a lot of pose-harding and duck-facing and it worked. Not only was Miranda given the Spring 2013 campaign, but she was also given the Fall/Winter campaign. These are some images from the new shoot.

Australian model Miranda Kerr ruffled a few fashion feathers when she replaced supermodel Kate Moss as the face of high street label Mango last winter.

And now, after she proved a major hit with customers, the Spanish fashion chain has confirmed that the dimple-cheeked brunette, 30, will continue as the face of Mango for its autumn/winter campaign.

In the shot released to accompany the announcement Kerr is dishevelled but still sexy in a pair of distressed jeans, mannish layering and some stacked flatforms from the new season collection.

Talking about the latest pictures the model and business woman, who is married to actor Orlando Bloom, 36, said, ‘I had a great time shooting the Fall/Winter campaign.’

‘The clothing is especially fun this season with a punk-inspired edge. I loved that Inez and Vinoodh kept the look of the campaign very raw and natural and I think it compliments the collection well.’

Kerr joins a long roster of fashionistas who’ve also modeled for Mango, including Scarlett Johansson, Penelope Cruz, Milla Jovovich, Naomi Campbell, Eva Herzigova, Claudia Schiffer and Christy Turlington.

The Spring/Summer collection was shot in early May by acclaimed photographers Inez and Vinoodh. New York provides the backdrop for clothes that match floral prints and pastel tones with a gritty punk aesthetic.

[From The Mail]

“…that match floral prints and pastel tones with a gritty punk aesthetic.” The hell? There is NOTHING punk about these clothes whatsoever. Why do labels do that? “It’s punk, if punk is pink and floral.” Gwyneth Paltrow even tried to claim that her sad pink gown at the Met Gala was “punk” because she’s old and she didn’t want to wear a studded Vivienne Westwood gown (how gauche). As for the styling (super-punk!), I always think Mango has huge styling problems. I remember when ScarJo was the face of Mango, and they made her look like the corpse of a lifeless doll in every single photos. At least Miranda looks alive here. But she’s such a pretty/cute girl, I don’t know why they insisted on making her look kind of druggy and strung-out.

Here are some photos of Miranda last week in NYC. I hate those booties.

Punk? Boho, girly, preppy, whatever… This is ANYTHING but punk. Even if she were clad in studs and leather, she can’t pull punk off. Miranda just bores the air out of my lungs these days…

    • COW says:

LMAO.. look at the last two pictures of her running towards the paps….. Kris Jenner adopt her already!!

  2. Aiobhan says:

There is nothing punk about this collection as the clothes look clean and she looks like she bathes daily. You cannot even describe the clothes as edgy. I still like the clothes though.

I also don’t really get the hype behind Miranda. She is pretty but not that pretty. I think this about most VS models though.

  3. Harriet says:

She is so incredibly talentless as a model not even accomplished photographers like Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin can rescue her. Most overrated lowbrow fashion model of all time! AND those booties ARE fug!

  4. Tapioca says:

If you’re going to photoshop the girl to death, at least make sure her top and bottom halves line up!

    (White shorts/very odd pose)

    • FLORC says:

I was looking at that! She looked scary thin too and nothing like the lower shots of her walking down the street. I understand why they photo shop, but they really went overboard here.

    • ncboudicca says:

I noticed the same thing. Looks very strange!

  5. Norman Bates' Mother says:

They should provide a detailed description of every picture and point which element is supposed to be punky or edgy because without it all I see is a bathing suit cover up, a sports bra and supersized panties with a random blazer and fedora and floral pajama bottoms with grandma-made sweater.

  6. telesma says:

If you’re a preppy art school twat and have no f*cking clue what “punk” is, then sure, they’re punk.

  7. j.eyre says:

I am going to need some context for the need of a “flatform”

    • Lucrezia says:

Platform shoes were commonly used in 18th century Europe to avoid the muck of urban streets.

I believe the concept behind this shoot is that the menial labourers have gone on strike.

The flatforms are necessary because the street-sweepers aren’t working. The laundry maids are obviously off in sympathy, because having no clean laundry is the only imaginable excuse for matching a sports-bra with a tailored jacket. The shoes are clearly polished with scab (blacklegging) labour.

Well researched and presented. I can now see their function in this spread. Although option B is viable in situations where, say, I have my tongue down CHemboy’s throat, Ms. Kerr has proven her ability to climb and would not need the aide of heightened footwear. Not to mention she has made a career of straining.

Given your evidence, I think Ms Kerr and Mango should be commended for depicting how a gal can turn adversity and dire circumstances into messages of hope and strength… and look kicky while doing so!

    • Lucrezia says:

Or (option B): flatforms are needed so that short people can make out with tall people with minimal neck strain.

Coital Health and Safety Act: Part 7: Section VII (Kissing while Vertical): Subsection A: Paragraph C: When the height difference of the two parties means that the cervical angle of the taller of the two parties exceeds the maximal safe angle (see Appendix F), then the other party must make an attempt to reduce the height difference by the using appropriate safety gear.

    • ncboudicca says:

They look like Frankenstein shoes to me!

  8. Mich says:

I suppose a case could be made that her bony hip jutting out looks technically edgy… That’s not punk though, more in need of a danish.

  9. bowers says:

    She’s as skinny as Posh.

  10. Bubulle says:

I used to love Mango not anymore, their clothes are too pricey and poorly made.

  11. Karen says:

Holy moly her arms in that first candid shot in the blue tee shirt.

  12. YoungHeartOldSoulNewView says:

I have no idea why the fashion industry seems to have forgotten what punk is, if they ever knew in the first place.

In my minimal fashion experience, I’ve noticed that when a line is _____-inspired, it’s just an excuse to make a connection. An A-line dress=50s inspired, color-blocking=mod inspired, a blazer=prep inspired, etc.

  13. June says:

I actually love the booties! I would totally rock those with a slouchy sweater and denim.

  14. Mayday says:

    Man, her body….

  15. TheOneAndOnlyOnly says:

Wonder is she’s ever heard of the Clash, THe Ramones, or the Sex Pistols?

  16. Karen says:

Sheesh that bag weighs more than she does.

  17. Emily C. says:

Those are the preppiest photos I have ever seen.

  18. Mia says:

She looks as boring as these clothes do.

  19. GirlyGirl says:

Either you’ve published the wrong photos or her people have no idea re: gritty or punk

    I suspect the latter.

    God she’s dull.
