Harry Styles and the rest of One Direction (don’t ask me their names) are the cover boys for the September issue of GQ UK. GQ UK actually did something rather cool, I thought – they did individual head-shot covers for each One Direction guy, and then a group shot inside. I mean, as far as I’m concerned, Harry Styles is the only 1D guy worth gossiping about, but I realize that 1D fans have their favorites, so it’s nice to see the guys get individual covers.
But of course, the 1D fans are going absolutely INSANE about the covers, and not in a good way. 1D fans are sending death threats to the editors of GQ UK, most of the threats coming in from Twitter, of course. Can you guess what set them off? It’s Harry’s cover line: “He’s up all night to get lucky”. Oh, the flat-out RAGE about that cover line. Apparently, the tender bunnies that make up 1D fandom thought that GQ UK was making Harry sound like a “whore” and the fans are gearing up to “punch those sluts” at GQ. The tweets are really crazy – go here to read some more.
As for the actual interview… again, I only really care about Harry. Harry discussed the “rumors” that he’s in a bisexual relationship with a DJ named Nick Grimshaw and so much more:
When asked about the Grimshaw rumors: “What rumours would they be?” Pressed to address speculation that he and Nick, 28, were lovers, Styles replied, “Oh, really? I didn’t even know. We’re not dating, no. We’re just friends.”
On rumors of his hookups in general: “Some of them are funny. Some of them are ridiculous. Some of them are annoying. I don’t want to be one of those people that complains about the rumours. I never like it when a celebrity goes on Twitter and says: ‘This isn’t true!’ It is what it is; I tend not to do that. The only time it gets really annoying is that if you get into a relationship and you get into a place where you really like someone and then things are being written in the papers that affect them and how they see you. Then it can get annoying.”
How many people has Harry slept with? “It’s definitely less than 100… Yes, lower than 50… I’m not doing this! You’re cornering me!” But the singer eventually conceded when told he was a ‘rock star’ and asked if it would be less than ten people. “Yes. Two people. I’ve only ever had sex with two people. That’s my answer. Read from it what you will!”

His answer about the bisexual rumors is great. Truly! I admire the way he handled that – not angry, not derogatory, not strident. I feel like he’s genuinely not offended that some people think he’s gay/bisexual. It’s a brave new world for pop stars and their sexuality, and it’s nice to see him reflect that. As for the whole “Harry’s only slept with two people” thing… bulls—t. He’s been “romantically involved” with Caroline Flack and Taylor Swift, and you can bet that there are plenty more. I don’t know why he would lie about it when he could just as easily said “None of your business.”

The most interesting thing about their GQ cover is their crazy ass fans reaction to it. I think GQ even tweeted about how they’re getting death threats and stuff for portraying the 1D boys as less than their squeaky clean *giggle snort* selves.

Actually he is being very smart. One direction and especially Harry is marketted as sexually ambigous. Its pretty obvious why; there are two types of fans. One that likes their fantasy bf to be straight in real life because maybe, just maybe he could fall for you, lol. It is for this camp that his publicists are forever dropping Mrs Robinson tales in tge tabloids.
The second camp cant abide the thought of their fantasy guy with another female, even if she is older ergo supposedly less threatening. Its much easier to accept that two bandmembers are madly in love and being closetted by their management. This camp dismisses the rumors of older women as part of a bearding conspiracy. Oh and according to cannon of this particular fandom, Harry has only been in two serious relationships, both same sex. 1) With Louis his bandmate and 2) With DJ Nick Grimshaw who is openly gay.
So now do you see what Harry is doing with the “had sex with only 2 people, MAKE OF THAT WHAT YOU WILL”, quote? Hes stirring the hornets nest. Whatever his orientation, he (read as His Handlers) know that the sexuality issue feeds his fandom. Harry will never clarify, not until their 15 minutes of fame are up. Until then expect wink wink hints and ambigous answers to this question.

British pop stars seem to enjoy having their sexuality questioned or gossipped about. It’s a shame that actors don’t seem to have reached a place where they’re allowed to chill the chill out about it, too.
I have said it before and I will stand by it – I am not attracted to this kid’s appearance but there is something kinky lying beneath that trench coat and I am curious to find out how far it goes.

These teen stars always fade eachother out. I will forever be greatful to the Beibs for getting rid of the Jonas Brothers but now One Direction is slowly fading him out. The thing that makes 1D different is that they acknowledge that they are nothing but another boy band and not the most talented people ever. That is something that I can respect.

It’s clear the group doesn’t really care much about loving on each other either, or what the press says.
One direction really played up the homoerotic angle earlier on. Ofcourse thats hardly new, plenty of boybands have done the same (see McFly), its simple marketting. Most 1 direction fans would rather see Louis and Harry flirting on stage than hear about Louis and his gf Eleanor.
THIS. It’s pandering. Kpop acts do it ALL the time. There’s really nothing novel with it. It’s great marketing and makes fans go wild. Besides most guys my age act this way anyways.

And the stones were. Obviously non of them were manufactured like 1d. These guys don’t even write their own songs. Buts even in the 60’s there were svengalis like simon Cowell. Who plucked some kids from obscurity gave some good songs and made them into popstars for a hot minute. 1d is simply the latest in this long line of manufactured bands.

I wish he would have just said “none of your business” and just leave it there. I’m not a 1D fan, but he’s the one I like the most. I don’t think the way the media usually portraits him (a womanizer and a douche) matches the way he really is. To me, he seems like an actually decent guy, who hasn’t let fame nor crazy fan girls affect him. Bieber’s got nothing on him.
This is one of the reasons why I like him so much, his personality. He really handles himself well with fans and the press.

Oh wow, if you read the interview the interviewer literally is pressuring him to answer the question about how many women he has slept with. You have to see the questions because he handled it well. The way it’s presented here, makes it sound like he was being flippant when he was just trying to get the interviewer off his back.

There is no way he did not know about the Grimshaw rumours, there was speculation for so long and the press increasingly mentioned it openly. Especially after the Brits. A friend of them was asked on a popular talkshow about it. Nick Grimshaw was asked. Harry was as far as I know never asked directly, but there were references. For example, when talking about fanfic with One Direction Matt Edmondson said something like “yes, fanfics about you and Nick Grimshaw on a rollercoaster touching each other”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uMaI-8vSGoc. When doing “call or delete” with Grimshaw (where people have to prank call somebody) Styles said that Grimshaw should tell their friend that he (Grimshaw) was in love with him (Styles) and unsure if it was mutual https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDWYNVxnnIY. You don’t do that and then be surprised that people were thinking that there is something going on.
I am sure that he is aware of them but neither wanted to give them more fuel nor treat it as something bad, so probably he (and his team)decided to play it this way. And I think it was the right decision, but I just can’t imagine that he really didn’t know.

I also like the mature way he handled the bisexual rumors. It’s sad that in our homophobic culture, people assume that a guy can’t have a friendship with another guy or do anything that isn’t considered ‘traditionally masculine’ without his sexual orientation being questioned. Being gay (or being a girl) is used as an insult to guys.
There is no need for someone to discuss the number of partners they’ve had, especially not with the public.
