Cara Delevingne on modeling: ‘I treat the camera like a person, I gaze into it’

You guys already know what I think of Cara Delevingne. I’m not a fan of the 21-year-old model and I don’t really understand why so many fashion people are making her “happen”. Notice I didn’t say “trying to make her happen.” It’s too late. She’s already happening, as her appearance on the cover of the September issue of W Magazine proves. It doesn’t even matter that the photoshoot is not all that great or that Cara flashes a nip in one of the photos. She has arrived. Angry Baby McEyebrows has arrived. W interviewed her too – you can read the whole piece here. She’s not a great interview or anything either – she just seems like a pretty typical posh girl who has been told for years that everything she does is magical and special. There is a fearlessness about her which is somewhat admirable, but I take it more as just her arrogant youth.

Cara on her psoriasis: When she’s stressed or nervous, angry red patches flare up on her skin. “It only happened during Fashion Week!” Delevingne told me, calling from her agent’s office in London. “Which is, of course, the worst time of the year for me to be covered in scabs. Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease, and I’m sensitive. Kate [Moss] saw me before the Louis Vuitton show at 3 a.m., when I was being painted by people to cover the scabs,” Delevingne recalled. “She said, ‘This is horrible! Why is this happening? I need to help you.’ She got me a doctor that afternoon; Kate gives really good advice.”

When she started as a model: “In the beginning, I was thinking, How do I set myself apart from the other girls? So many girls were taller, skinnier, and prettier. And I’m not a girly girl at all—I didn’t get boobs until I was around 18! As a teenager, I kept thinking, I’m so short, and I have no boobs—what do I do?” Delevingne said, laughing. She began to look at modeling as playing different roles. “Maybe that’s why I’ve been noticed,” she said. “I treat the camera like a person—I gaze into it. Photos are a flat thing, and you need to put life into them.”

She’s aristocratic: She was “discovered” by Sarah Doukas, the owner of a London modeling agency whose daughter went to school with Delevingne and her sisters, Chloe and Poppy. The Delevingne girls are British aristocracy: Their mother, Pandora, was an It girl in the ’80s before she married Charles Delevingne, whose grandfather was a viscount. Pandora, who until recently was the head of personal shopping at Selfridges and counts the Duchess of York among her closest friends, once had a nasty heroin addiction. (It has been rumored that Poppy was named for the drug.) Pandora was in and out of rehab for much of the girls’ childhoods.

Learning from her sisters: “Poppy was a model, and I never liked to do the same things my sisters did. After the Bruce Weber shoot, I didn’t think about it. I wanted to be either a musician or an actress.” She has played the drums since childhood and was in a band, the Clementines, when she was 12. It was around that time that she asked her parents for an acting agent as a present. “I wanted to be a Disney Channel star! I wanted to be Hannah Montana. They said no!”

Sending an audition tape to Tim Burton: At 17, while she was a student at Bedales, a very arty private school in Hempshire, Delevingne got word of Tim Burton’s big-screen production of Alice in Wonderland and made an audition tape. “My interpretation of Alice was a little crazy,” she said, laughing. “I overplayed it—the way a young girl would overplay all her emotions. I sent my tape off, and then I was at a wedding and this woman came over to me. She said, ‘You don’t know me, but I know exactly who you are.’ ” It was Lili Zanuck, the wife of Richard Zanuck, the film’s producer. “She told me that they all loved my tape!” Delevingne recalled. “And I went to Tim Burton’s house and met with him. I didn’t get the part, but that experience lit a fire in me.”

Cara’s bad-girl rep: “Everyone worries about me,” she said. “It’s hard for my family, and I know I have to be careful. People have to realize that I can take care of myself. I’ve done a great job so far.”

She’s restless: “I want to make music, I want to act, I want to sing, I want to do something that doesn’t make my skin erupt. I was just on holiday for three days in Greece with my sister, and I thought that would make me happy and relaxed. But when I stop everything, it’s really bad. I go crazy. In Greece, it was a lot of couples, and I felt alone, which made me sad.”

She’s closer with women in public: “I called Rihanna,” she continued. “She said ‘It’s easy to drown yourself in work. That’s a form of escapism. So, if you’re alone and you want to cry, cry.’ And I did. But by then, it was time to leave and get back to my life.”

[From W Magazine]

So her mom had substance abuse problems and the UK press has noted several times that Cara seems to be quite a hard partier too. I wouldn’t say Cara “has done a great job” taking care of herself so far, but we’ll see.

Did anyone else roll their eyes at this? “Maybe that’s why I’ve been noticed. I treat the camera like a person—I gaze into it. Photos are a flat thing, and you need to put life into them.” Yes, Cara. You are so different from every other model. No other model ever thought to “gaze into the camera” and treat the camera like a person. It’s just you, because you are a special snowflake. As for why Cara seems to be the new hot model these days… I think it’s because she actually has some personality, some arrogance, plus those trademark bushy eyebrows and that aristocratic smirk. I do have to admit, I would prefer to talk about someone with an actual personality, like Cara, rather than trying to convince myself that Karlie Kloss is anything other than a bland piece of toast.

I always love it when models try to intellectualize their job and explain how difficult/arty it is to wear clothes and get photographed. It’s like reading a slightly dumber Gaga interview.

    • Erinn says:

I’ll give them credit when it comes to learning their angles and how to pose to best be photographed…but that’s essentially it. Show off the clothes. Look good. Give a spark. You have other people doing your hair and makeup. Keep in shape, show up on time, and do what you’re told.

I’d love to see them deal with the constant stress I have at my job – web design for a large company. I have to constantly be innovative, keep my stats up, build quickly, follow very convoluted instructions, plus I have to run around answering other coworkers questions, do training for them, fix everyone else’s mistakes, and still keep those production and quality stats up.

    • Sixer says:

I’m going to agree (it’s just fingernails on a blackboard when they aggrandize like this) but I will add a minor caveat. You can learn poses, posture, expressions, but the camera either loves you or it doesn’t. There’s some charismatic ingredient in addition to real-life beauty that makes an unforgettable model.

But the nonsense they spout becomes even more grating when it’s someone like this girl, who doesn’t even seem to have it. Who is she appealing to? I don’t think the majority of women want to look like her and I don’t think the majority of men fantasise over girls like her either.

So we’re left with: attitude and eyebrows. Oh, and pedigree and nepotism.

    • GiGi says:

I worked in the industry for a number of years and while, yes, the money is outrageous, the job is grueling.

Very long hours, constant criticism and judgement (to your face), even top girls being treated like furniture. It’s really quite a lonely life. Frequently on set, everyone else works together and you’re just left alone til they need you. It’s certainly not difficult in the way being a surgeon would be, but it’s absolutely not for the faint of heart.

      • T.fanty says:

Yes, and I am sympathetic to that, but let’s not mistake endurance for talent or skill. Plus, for someone at Delevigne, the compensation is immense – parties, free clothes, travel, followed by the likelihood of a wealthy marriage, acting lessons from Drunk Uncle Cumby. It’s not like she’s working in a Chinese iPhone sweatshop.

      • Lindy79 says:

HAHA @ acting lessons from DUC

When does her play open again? I sincerely hope he doesn’t show up

  2. allons-y alonso says:

    Ugh.

  3. Sixer says:

I like to see the inverted snob coming out in you, Kaiser. It makes me feel less alone! Surely to god there’s a model somewhere that’s neither a “bland piece of toast” NOR a spoiled, idiotic scion of incredible wealth.

  4. Ella says:

I don’t know about the US but here in Europe, especially the UK, this girl is EVERYWHERE. She is on every magazine, every campaign, she is mentioned in every article in the UK Vogue or UK Elle. She’s no longer just a model, she’s a celebrity with paparazzi following her.

So yeah, she has definitely “arrived”…

I like her ok but am getting a little tired already. She’s more overexposed than Miley, and that’s saying a lot.

  5. Lucy2 says:

I miss the days when models modeled, and the interviews were saved for people who actually had something to say.

  6. Rose says:

She reminds me of the girl with the cornrows in Orange is the New Black…anyone else?

  7. Tapioca says:

Enjoy it while it lasts, because the average shelf life of a model-of-the moment is 6 months, a year if you’re really lucky (or hook up with Roly Poly DiCaprioly).

What IS Agyness Dean doing these days? Or Lily Cole? Anyone?!!

    • Spooks says:

Well, Lily is acting and she graduated with honors from Cambridge. So, she’s doing well.

    • agentscully says:

Ha! Agyness Dean was exactly who I was thinking of reading this post. She seemed all the rage one minute then forgotten about the next.

    • NM9005 says:

Cara is the poor man’s Kate Moss just like Claudia Schiffer was the poor man’s Brigitte Bardot (although she did have a great career).

Let’s see how far Cara will get. They always look for copies of truly iconic people so if she has any real personality and can keep her drug/party style ‘under control’ she might defy the odds.

  8. Nev says:

    FANTASTIC cover!!!!

    This is a fashion cover.

  9. LL says:

I like when they put models on covers but I hate when there is a interview for some of them.

The models of today are not very interesting as 90s models like Naomi Campbell, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy Turlington, Kate Moss and many, many others. Those models I have no problem reading about them but models like this Delevingne also Kate Upton, Miranda Kerr and others just don’t interest me enough.

  10. Eleonor says:

Is she using Blue Steel or Le Tigre here?

  11. Dipty Doo says:

“Yes, Cara. You are so different from every other model. No other model ever thought to “gaze into the camera” and treat the camera like a person. It’s just you, because you are a special snowflake.”

    LMFAO that was funny!

Remind me why the Skelator look is so good?

  12. Dhavynia says:

How stupid can aristocrats be to name your child after a drug and not really hide it.
These people will never know what real stress is but whatever.
I can open any fashion magazine and blindly point to any model there and see her face because she looks like any of them
Maybe if she looks at the camera with extreme fierce I might tell the difference lol

  13. erika says:

Blahblaf blah bla blah model blah blah me me me me me…..me. Model.

    Barf

  14. I love her. She seems funny, cool and is an amazing model. I don’t understand all the hate for her..

    • NeoCleo says:

I’m with you on this one. She’s young and that is obvious from her mode of self-expression but I don’t think she is obnoxious and she’s certainly not vain about her looks. Her bone structure is gorgeous–I bet she ages really well with some care.

  15. Tish says:

Wonder if Hiddles gave her a week-long acting seminar after that Vogue shoot. Haha. I bet she is asking for advice from Eddie Redmayne too.

Also, here’s Cara with Cumby at a Rolling Stones concert (sort of! haha. she’s at the back) http://31.media.tumblr.com/1a8b82b4d3a0081ea4186a88845f138f/tumblr_mpm09yJRoE1rt4l7po1_500.jpg

Posh people of the UK! My favorites!

  16. Bubbling says:

In my language her name translate as a slang word for penis. Unfortunate.

  17. Lindy79 says:

How did she explain the bag of white powder that fell out of her bag outside her flat in London?

Have no real feelings about her either way. She seems a bit manic at times but, she does seem to have the “thing” that you need to really make it in the modeling world.

I agree with the comments about models interviews

  18. Chrissy says:

Not gonna lie, I kind of love this girl and hope her career flourishes. There’s just something about her that catches my attention. I don’t really get all the hate toward her?

  19. Alexandria says:

*raises shaking fist* Those damn Delevingners on Tumblr made her happen

  20. Linda L says:

Is “I” the only word she knows?

  21. Lulu86 says:

she kind of reminds me of a young leonardo dicaprio in a weird way think ‘whats eating gilbert grape’ or ‘basketball diaries’ she just seems like a hanger on, even though she is carving out her ‘career’ she clearly goes to who is the most popular and can provide her with the most fun.

  22. Asdfg says:

I think she IS quite bland. She always gives the same dead stare with a pout. 🙄 No emotions.

  23. lisa says:

she definitely does stare into it really hard, she looks like she is wishing me out to the cornfield

  24. Lulu86 says:

    HA good one LMAO

  25. Emily C. says:

If she’s treating the camera in the cover photo like a person, she must be cannibalistic. Eek.

  26. Barhey says:

My friend is a photographer, and was paid to do some shoots at NYC fashion week. She came in to photograph the models with no expectations, but left feeling incredibly sad about the whole thing. The models were almost all 15 year old eastern European girls, huddling together to smoke. They all looked incredibly scared and ill. One girl was vomiting back stage and no one said anything or took notice. It was heartbreaking.

Basically, it kind of shows you the state of the modeling world. Girls like Cara “happen” because they’re on of the few models with the background to become a celebrity and put themselves out there. A 15 year old girl with no money and little command of the English language is never going to make it into the magazines.

  27. fd says:

I don’t particularly like her personal style but I think she has the makings of a great model. She takes great photos and has an interesting face.

  28. jane16 says:

Haha! Great post, very funny and true! Models have been told to think of the camera as someone they have a crush on since the beginning of modeling. Wow, she’s really thinks she’s original.

  29. Roo says:

I thought models were supposed to be pretty?

    • Manchurian Global says:

      Thank you!

Every time I look at her I think of the “Eye of the Beholder” episode of the Twilight Zone. Not a good look.

I appreciate models that have interesting, non-traditional features, but this, this is too much.

  30. lola lola says:

    Gee, name drop much?

  31. Dommy Dearest says:

She looks like she’s trying to make the camera man run off scared. If that’s gazing I’d hate to see her scowl.

  32. Ally8 says:

She did her best work as a catalog model for ASOS, where they somehow made her look cute, fresh and smart. She’s very flat in photos now, and just looks like a cranky, spoiled child.

Barbara Palvin shows much more promise.

  33. Bridget says:

This is probably the American in me, but the girl’s schmancy aristocratic background is that her great-grandfather was a viscount? That’s it? She may be all the rage now, but then again so was Agyness Deyn for a while…

  34. Jay says:

I like her – I think she has a really striking face. I even like the eyebrows.

  35. love says:

Why is the columnist hating on Cara? Is she/he jealous?

  36. Carolyn says:

Agree with others..Cara is this year’s Agnes Deyn. And yes, Karlie Kloss is as bland as toast.

  37. RPG says:

Wow, for all the ridiculous hatred the Alice in Wonderland movie gets, it would’ve been beyond awful had Cara won the lead role instead of Mia W. Thankfully some higher power knew better.

Maybe Cara was less messed up five years ago, but how she even got THAT far in the audition process to go head-to-head with a legit actor like Mia is simply mind-boggling.

  38. Jayna says:

It’s how Madonna was in videos in her younger days in her videos.

  39. Claire says:

She does one look I like and thats it. I think these girls are so over-exposed that people get sick of seeing them. I can stomach Cara over Miranda though
