Tom Hiddleston: ‘I think villains, really great villains, are always the most complex’

Tom Hiddleston attended the Disney Expo over the weekend to announce his new voice work/job for Disney’s The Pirate Fairy. Christina Hendricks will be voicing the fairy and Hiddles will be voicing… Captain Hook!! We discussed it over the weekend, but it just occurred to me how wrong Hiddles is for Captain Hook. Tom has a lovely voice, of course, but I think his voice is too posh for Hook. I would imagine someone like… Tom Hardy, right? Hardy would have been a great Captain Hook. Still, Hiddles has a job and he gleefully spoke to Entertainment Weekly about it too:

This weekend at D23, Tom Hiddleston was revealed to be the latest in a long line of greats to portray the famous villain Captain James Hook, in The Pirate Fairy. The next day, he took the stage again, promoting the Thor sequel, in which he will play trickster and hellion Loki for the third time.

Hiddleston is, as a man, easygoing and thoughtful. He is quick to smile and kind to strangers — so why is he so drawn to playing bad guys?

“I think villains, really great villains, are always the most complex,” Hiddleston told EW. “Because in their heart, there is always some kind of deeply complicated psychology that you need to unpack and un-knit and understand.”

His character James, for example, starts off the new Tinker Bell movie as a young boy. “James is the cabin boy. And he’s kind and attentive and sweet and polite and educated and charming and they are best friends — until he reveals his true nature, which is that he becomes the captain of this rogue band: Captain James Hook.”

The motivation for James’ transformation is yet to be revealed, but Hiddleston said that James is a young man who knows what he wants, and once he gets it, he doesn’t feel the need to be friendly with anybody anymore. The power, it seems, goes to his head.

“I’ve always thought of acting as kind of a three-dimensional anthropology. It is the study of human nature in some regard. Like psychologists will give lectures and people will write books, but actors do the same sort of digging around when they’re allowed to and they present their findings in their characters, and each character is different, but it seems to me that villains — and I put that word in inverted commas — they are just the most complex. They have the most complicated motivations. They have, quite often, quite broken personalities. The fun is digging around in why.”

Hiddleston sure had a lot of fun in his role as Hook, exploring his own voice talents and paying homage to the original Disney animated Hook: Hans Conried.

“There’s a real sort of theatricality and there’s an age in his voice — he’s like: ‘Where’s Peter Pan?’” he boomed, imitating the iconic voice. “So it’s almost these old English vowel sounds, and there’s a real gravel and a crack in his voice, which I tried to get once I was Hook.”

He was quick to mention, however, that despite being universally known as Loki, he’s not all bad.

“I’ve played a few heroes as well — well, not heroes, but like … good guys. I don’t think F. Scott Fitzgerald had any world-destroying ambitions,” he joked of his Midnight in Paris role.

[From Entertainment Weekly]

Lord, Hiddles is so extra. He means well, he shills like a champ, he seems game for anything and everything, but… he’s just extra. He over-intellectualizes his job. He’s too concerned with seeming serious and interesting that he forgets to actually BE interesting. I will forever compare him to Benedict Cumberbatch, who seems so AD/HD that he can’t stop himself from making news because he’s so naturally funny, weird, quirky and bitchy. Tom is just too earnest. Ugh. “I’ve always thought of acting as kind of a three-dimensional anthropology.” ENOUGH!!

Can I just cross-reference my Cara Delevigne comment and be done with it?

    • Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

      Where is this comment?

And where did you put the ball gag?

      • T.fanty says:

I was just pouring a little scorn on her for inflating the talent/significance/artistry of her job. God bless TommyAnne for selling it, but if you need to explain why it’s important them you’re not actually doing your job properly.

TommyAnne: saving the philistines from themselves. Especially those Disney-watching motherf*ckers. Five year olds are the absolute worst.

      • Sixer says:

Yep. I think I said this yesterday, but what on earth is wrong with “Why are you drawn to bad guys?” “Well, I’m drawn to Captain Hook because Disney has some of the most memorable villains from most people’s childhoods and it was just such great fun to give one of them a go myself”. Done. Loved Disney. Didn’t look like a tit.

    • Sixer says:

How about cross referencing Cumberbudget’s own comments into a FOURTH dimension (I believe this to be one we can neither see nor hear)?

      • Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

Make it the Fifth Dimension, and we can have music!

      • Sixer says:

But what if he dances? I have a sudden (not altogether welcome) image of TommyAnne doing Shake a Tail Feather, complete with mash potato.

    • TheyPromisedMeBeer says:

I’m with C&C – what was the comment?

    • Anna says:

Ugh. I am actually turned on by all that over-intellectualizing.

      • Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

I would too if he were talking about something where such a thing is warranted.

      • Anna says:

I love his voice. And I love pretentious pseudo-intellectuals (I can hold my own with those; I am intimidated by the real-deal ones).

      • Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

I’m tired of his voice. He knows too well how much Americans fawn over The Voice and overplays it.

I admire real intellectuals who come up with actual real opinions and ideas. He just wants approval.

      • Sixer says:

I’m not even so ambitious as to look for an intellectual idea from him – just one, teensy weensy genuine opinion, that’s all I want. It can be about the best brand of baked beans, for all I care. So long as it’s real.

      • Anna says:

I actually do think that he’s real, that he thinks in these kinds of lofty monologues.

      • T.fanty says:

        *Eye rolls at Anna*

        Slut.

        😘

      • Miss Melissa says:

I think his brain never shuts down. It just goes and goes. And people ask him what he thinks, and so he tells them exactly what is going on in his head.

I think the uncontrollably excited thing comes from the same place, for the same reason.

And you know what? I am surrounded by angry, grumpy, morose people with exploding tempers, all day long.

I’m good with the endlessly cheerful and thoughtful. It’s positive, and I like it.

      • Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

I’d be fine if what was in his brain was the real thing and were combined with some self-awareness. He can be very good in talking about Shakespeare; unbelievably vapid on so many other things.

      • j.eyre says:

I am too, Anna, bless his little, garrulous heart.

      • Anna says:

        @Fanty – RIGHTEOUS!

@Miss Jane – a slut after my own heart 🙂

      • j.eyre says:

As a slut, it is not your heart I am after, darling…

      • Anna says:

Ouch, a little bit. You can at least pretend. But really, you are welcome to anything…

      • j.eyre says:

*presents chocolates, flowers and shirtless photo of CHemboy to Anna*

        Now?

      • Anna says:

        Lady Eyre, you are perfect.

    • Felice says:

Now that Vogue spread makes so much more sense now *brain implodes* (Seriously though, who thought that matchup was a good idea? They should have chosen someone older)

  2. dahlianoir says:

    He’s my shame-f**k. Girls, what are yours 😀 ?

  3. MissMary says:

I get the feeling he really wants to distance himself from the “flawless prince magical unicorn” image he’s gained over the past few years in the hopes of getting big-boy parts again.

  4. Lindy79 says:

“I’ve always thought of acting as kind of a three-dimensional anthropology. It is the study of human nature in some regard.”

Didn’t he say this at the Comic Con fan interview thing? I remember wanting to stab him when I read it, so it’s fresh in my memory.

Hiddles, you’re voicing Hook in a straight to DVD Disney movie, not curing cancer. STOP IT.

    • T.fanty says:

“Well, being an actor is kind of like cancer, in that you have to break it down and seep through the body on a molecular level to truly understand what is going on in the mind of a muppet co-star…”

      • Lindy79 says:

“In order to get inside the psyche of my muppet character, I had to be ONE with the felt and fluff, so I covered myself in it for a 3 week period and had a friend maneouver me around with his hand up my bum. As my good friend Alain de Botton once said “piss of and stop calling me and sitting in my garden in nothing but a Loki helmet, and stop stealing my bloody quotes!”

      • Anna says:

How much do I love both of these comments!

      • Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

        You are both priceless.

And I am glad I am not the only one who has noticed how much Hiddles gushes and fanboys over Alain de Botton on Twitter– which is another reason why I don’t really love his mind. Here is a lovely article which pretty much sums it up:

        http://www.newrepublic.com/book/review/alain-de-botton-school-of-life-how-to

      • Sixer says:

Fanty! I think we need the Rik Mayall/Alain de Uphisownbottom link again!

      • T.fanty says:

        Done!

        http://alaindebottom.tumblr.com/

        It never gets old!

*joyfully decides that a Young Ones and/or Bottom
marathon is in my near future*

      • Sixer says:

“Laugh? I almost went to Ethiopia. Second class, of course.”

      • j.eyre says:

“I don’t think you understand Animal’s plight in the muppets. He appears to be a mindless, drum-banging, scenery devouring beast, but what beats in his chest is a fist of rejection and guarded apprehension from having been misunderstood in his peculiar tastes. I think it was Ernie who once said “Sure Bert, I can be like that person, but I just want to be who I am.” I just want to be who I am… that is the core of finding your Muppetness, I think.”

      • Anna says:

Miss Jane, thanks to that monologue I am now fully ready to go….(I am also not the least bit facetious)

    • tizzyfizzy says:

Worse, he probably picked that up from someone else… can only imagine him sitting around with a bunch of other “deep thinking artistes” discussing their “craft” while (probably) intoxicated. Just imagine the gems that would emerge!

I dunno, a soundbite like that doesn’t just emerge on the spot, would you think? Although, who knows what goes through TH’s brain during an interview

  5. Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

Pixie Hollow is a low level straight to DVD product aimed at selling Tinkerbell toys to four year old girls. There are no psychologically complex villians here. This is not Nabokov.

  6. Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

And not to labor the point, but how is anthropology otherwise not three dimensional? I seem to remember my classes from college about evolution etc. as being firmly anchored in reality. What exactly does he mean?

    • Lucrezia says:

      Wait, what? Evolution?

      *thinks for a minute*
      *checks google*

You’re American? Apparently we use the word anthropology differently. Anthropology in Europe/Commonwealth is what you’d probably specify as sociocultural anthropology. Definitely nothing to do with evolution. Just cross-cultural studies, heavy on sociology/psychology.

I think he was actually referring to was ethnography: when you try to gain an anthropological understanding by immersing yourself in another culture.

3D isn’t quite the right phrase, but immersion definitely grants a greater depth of understanding than you get reading a text or hearing a lecture. I think that’s what he was trying to get at. Acting = immersion in psyche = greater depth of understanding. And then depth = 3D.

      • Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

My point was that anthropology is kind of inherently three dimensional. You can pretty much say that for science in general, or anything that relies upon observation of data. (And evolutionary anthropology is a real thing.)

So all well and good Lucrezia, but… Pixie Hollow?

Sorry, but this quote is very pompous in its context.

      • Lucrezia says:

Oh I completely understand that it’s a real thing.

Just what you’re calling evolutionary anthropology is what I’d call evolutionary biology (and here it’d be run out of the biology dept.) Learning that archaeology is part of anthropology in the US also surprised me: here it’s is a totally separate discipline. So there’s a translation issue. Anthropology in the US is apparently a MUCH broader field than it is in Europe/Commonwealth. Anthropology here is predominantly sociology/ethnography.

Let’s just pretend he said “3d psychology” instead (that should translate better). Do you think psychology is inherently 3D? I’m not sure I agree. There’s definitely a big difference between learning about sociopathy (in abstract way) and spending time pretending you’re a sociopath (and trying to emphasise with them enough to portray them well.) I do agree “3D” isn’t quite the right word, but what would you call it? (That’s an honest question – I really can’t think of a good phrase that captures the difference between abstract learning and immersive role-play.)

I have mixed feelings about whether it’s pompous or not. It is Pixie Hollow, but it’s also Captain Hook! Hook is legendary.

      • Sixer says:

I am firmly on the pompous side of this fence. No splinters in my bum about that. It *is* Pixie Hollow.

But Lucrezia – I see what you’re saying. I had no idea of the differences on either side of the pond re anthropology. I love this site. Find out a new – non-celebitchy and interesting – thing most days.

How about if he’d said “fully-rounded” instead? As in, “I didn’t want to be a stock villain; I wanted Hook to be a fully-rounded character.”

If Hiddles tried some Plain English (capitalisation intended) instead of trying to blind his romantic-leaning fans with impressive-sounding polysyllables, he might get laughed at less.

  7. Lipsy says:

I can’t hate on a dude who is actually talented, enjoys his fame, and is nice to his fans. Until he dates some random TV girl when his movie comes out, goes grocery shopping with her then breaks up after 4 days, Tom Hiddleston is fine by me!

    • AlexB says:

      agree!

    • Pink says:

Gosh, that Kaley “thing” has destroyed Henry Cavill. He was so much hotter back then. Pathetic!

    • Elodie says:

LOL Hiddleston is more present in interviews and events than lining up acting job projects though… in fact, his interviews résumé might be bigger than his acting job résumé.

Aye indeed it was such a baffling PR disaster but imo Henry Cavill still looks almighty fine so I’d still gladly take him 🙂

  8. Katy says:

Kaiser is not on the Hiddleston fangirl train. And I am not either. Good actor though.

  9. Anmelt says:

Agh, he needs a better publicist!

    • Dee says:

Its not the publicist fault, this is his personality. Unless he has a publicist who writes answers to questions for him i dont think it will help. Tom Hiddleston is totally hopeless on his own. He is like Anne Hathaway but without the awards and stellar career to justify the insuffereable interviews.

  10. Linda L says:

He will say villains are the most complex characters, until he gets a job playing a hero. Then *heroes* will be the most fascinating thing to pretend to be. Could he possibly pander any more?

Oh, please someone make him STOP TALKING. There’s not a single sincere thought in that actor’s pretty head, is there?

I am astounded people find this man any kind of interesting, but, have at him.

    • flower says:

He won’t ever stop talking, that’s the issue. It’s almost like he was clamped on as a child and not allowed to speak his mind by nanny. And now he just cannot shut his yap long enough for anyone else to get a word in. I can only imagine what sex must be like with him, someone get that guy a gag will ya, he won’t hush up!!!

      • Kate says:

He could chatter incessantly to me about whatever the f-ck he wants during sex. Yes sir.

      • MissThing says:

Well he and I can have a contest then and see who can talk the most during sex. I gladly volunteer for this onerous task.

Seriously, we talkie people you must understand… WE cant HELP OURSELVES. Its who and what we are.

You do realize that people like us only say about 10% of the things that actually go through our heads.

  11. Haley says:

I like him as Loki and find him completely insufferable everywhere else.

  12. Stacey says:

This dude is not hot, sexy, or cute. He is so average looking it’s laughable. He will never be a Brad Pitt.

    • Kate says:

Brad Pitt with his bloaty face and stringy Axl Rose hair does nothing for me.

    • Jamie says:

Neither pretty-and-dumb boy Brad Pitt nor little pixie Hiddles do anything for me.

Then again I just finished Luther Season 1. My standards have hit a new delicious high.

  13. Zaytanna says:

Hiddleston is just ugh. Don’t get the hype over this insect King.

  14. Gen says:

Kaiser do not keep comparing this guy to Cumberbatch. Cumberbatch is way more advanced in his career than hiddles. Please stop.

    • Tish says:

I actually think it’s more fun that way. It just accentuates how budget Hiddles is.

    • MBP says:

Waaaait a minute – I’m pretty sure it was here a few months ago that Cumberbatch was getting ragged on for comparing himself to Hiddleston and…someone else? As in how they had coped with fame? Funny how the tide turns.

  15. TheyPromisedMeBeer says:

A lot of actors say how much they like playing the villains. They just don’t take a wall of text to talk about. *Sigh, oh Tommy.

  16. Dani says:

Someone needs to remind him to stop speaking.

    • j.eyre says:

Maybe we could come up with a hand signal or something… perhaps too subtle.

Maybe we should light his shoes on fire when its time – that might work.

      • tizzyfizzy says:

Well, yes, but might that also incite dancing? Although, I suppose he wouldn’t be talking.

      • T.fanty says:

I have a very clear signal for when he should stop talking. It involves covering his face in a capacity that I can’t really describe here.

      • Lindy79 says:

        Shall I repost Monty Python?

      • T.fanty says:

No, because I just went down thread and saw the Cumby pic. Cumberbudget doesn’t exist in my universe anymore.

I think I need to spend a little alone time with that Lebowitz picture.

      • j.eyre says:

Yes, but Fanty, we were asked to leave – and to not return – French Laundry in the middle of our amuse bouche when you tried to get TommyannE to stop likening Coriolanus’ fall to the plight of Geror.

And Lindy, you should always post Monty Python.

      • Dani says:

Fanty, I think that is an excellent way to remind him to stop speaking.

I don’t mean he should just be silent always, but sometimes he should just…not speak. Or speak too much? Or in such elaborate sentences?

But who am I kidding, I would sit on his face too.

  17. Dee says:

Are we sure he is british? Most british actors excel at sarcasm and irony. This guy hasnt got a sarcastic bone in his body.

    • Lindy79 says:

I’ve noticed this too, it’s very evident when he’s interviewed with someone else.
Two very similar examples are the one with Christina Henricks from this week and one from War Horse with Cumberbatch, where he’s talking in the most earnest way possible about some random bizare part and the other person makes a joke/quip and he just does a small laugh and goes right back into his story.

The War Horse one was hilarious, they’re both asked have they ever ridden before and BC gives some example about how his mum tried at age 12 to entertain him during Summer holidays but he wasn’t that into it. Hiddles, bless him, goes into this big story about how he was riding across the Rainbow Bridge in Asgard, and BC looks to interviewer and just goes “as you do…”, Hiddles laughs but then goes right back into the story without sensing how stupid it sounded.

      • Dee says:

Lol! He sounds like one of those guys you get stuck with at a dinner party who just loves to hear themselves talk and are oblivious that other people want them to stop talking.

      • T.fanty says:

And that’s quite impressive, to be able to talk over Drunk Uncle Cumby.

Although I do love that warhorse interview. They look like Phineas and Ferb.

      • Lindy79 says:

Agreed, they both look great in those interviews. He has his Henry V hair and beard which really suits him.

Not a patch on Parade’s End Cumby though 😉

      • T.fanty says:

Nothing compares with Christopher Tiejens. Sylvia’s train ride doesn’t even compare to what I could offer that man.

    • Linda L says:

Perhaps he skipped that class at Eton?

  18. Claire W. says:

I just don’t know what it is about him but I have never been on his bandwagon and most likely never will. I mean he is a good actor and appears to be funny sometimes. Also a nice guy I guess. He just doesn’t do it for me. I’m not talking about just physically because I can be attracted to someone even if they aren’t really that good looking.

Ladies you can have him he’s all yours.

  19. P&P says:

He doesn’t get on my nerves as much as some people on here are saying. But I do agree with the comments that say he doesn’t do it for them. I mean I can see why people go crazy for Tom Hardy, Fassy & even Cumby. Tom just reminds me of Anne Hathaway. I don’t hate him. But I don’t love him either.

  20. Lucrezia says:

Captain Hook went to Eton. So the posh accent is correct casting.

Seriously, I’m not making that up. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Hook#Biography_of_the_character

    • Jessa says:

Thank you! Was just going to point out that Captain Hook is quite posh and is obsessed with “good form”, despite a sinking suspicion that it’s bad form to be obsessed with good form. It’s quite good casting, actually.

  21. PrairieGirl says:

    Ladies, this explains it all:

http://www.astrotheme.com/astrology/Tom_Hiddleston , in particular: “With Libra as a dominant sign in your natal chart, you love to please, to charm, and to be likeable. Moreover, you are naturally inclined towards tolerance and moderation, as well as elegance and tact, as if you were meant to please! Of course, you always find malcontents who criticize your lack of authenticity or of courage and your half-heartedness, but your aim is to be liked, and in this field, you are an unrivalled champion!”

Best. Website. Ever. (Aside from Celebitchy, of course! 🙂 )

    • Miss M says:

I wish I believed in the Horoscope. Like Hiddles, I am aquarius. Oh, my ascendant is Libra. Let me tell you, I am soooooo not the pleaser type.

    • TheyPromisedMeBeer says:

Umm … I need to know what on earth he did to rate that kind of astro profile. Did *he* put in those deets, or did a *ahem* fan do this?

Not to knock the gentleman, but you usually see those for high-ranking politicians or celebs.

  22. Linda L says:

When does Only Lovers Left Alive come out? How long will it be before he is heralding the superior qualities of …vampires?

“Oh, yes. I have ALWAYS been fascinated by the undead…eternally…eheheh.”

    • Mrs Bowie says:

Tom Hiddleston was never on my radar until I watched ‘Only lovers left alive’ at our Film Festival here in NZ last week. OMG. Tilda and Tom were delicious. He is one hot broody vampire. Lots of dirty thoughts. Lots. Beautiful movie, slow paced, strong imagery and surprisingly funny. Tilda as always is just… Tilda. You cannot look away when that woman is on the screen.

      • Lindy79 says:

Oh! Really interested to hear that you liked it, as there have been very few reviews of the entire film outside of Cannes and there have been so few clips. I am really curious to see it, I’m sure Tilda is amazing as always!

  23. Mia 4S says:

Dear Lord if he tries to intellectualize a direct to video Disney cartoon God help us if he’s ever cast in an “Inception” or “Mulholland Drive” type film. We won’t survive!! 😉

The boy knows he has to sell though; fair enough!

    • tubular_trekkie says:

      🙂

He seems to be at such pains to come across as smart and intellectual that he actually ends up sounding like a bit of a doofus.

I can’t fault his commitment though. Still giving it 110% isn’t he? Shame he hasn’t got something more substantial to over-analyse and generally waffle on about (I’d happily read about that). 😉

  24. Tish says:

He just takes himself too seriously. I mean, serious actors give importance to characterization and such but they still recognize the fact that at the end of the day they’re just entertainers and contribute so little to humanity when compared to brain surgeons and lawyers, etc.

    • Lindy79 says:

Exactly, most actors when doing animation, say something like “I’ve always loved animation/it’s great to do family films that my kids can watch/I loved the studios previous work” they don’t barrel on about the psyche of their character as if it’s Schindlers List.

    • Linda L says:

      @Tish
I think he takes what he does too seriously, as well (and his current status in that profession, too).

Correct me if I am wrong, but when he went on that self-discovery trip to Guinea (complete with publicist and some moronic UNICEF woman, tweeting “Hiddlestoners! Here’s a hot pic of Tom in that plaid shirt! [oh, yeah, and some, um, starving children] and one of Tom and Luke in cool shades”!!!!), they went somewhere and asked what those kids (young adults?) wanted to be when they grew up. Most said doctors/teachers, right? NO ONE said an actor. In fact, didn’t he write that they did not even have a WORD for what TH does for a living? Wonder how THAT made him feel? Still a special snowflake?

Perhaps it is his uber-privileged background, his obviously sheltered life of wealth and entitlement that make him think that what he does for a living is anything special. Or not. Maybe he’s just a rich jerk, playing a part.

You are correct. He entertains people, like a dancing monkey. He needs to get over himself.

      • gensou says:

Well here’s he says that “some good friends and his sisters keep him grounded”
        http://youtu.be/Be_75iyY5e8

      • Lindy79 says:

I know I’m probably nit-picking but…does it sound as though he kind of claims that he came up with the main point of Loki and Thor fighting side by side, like he gave that idea to Kevin Feige (Head of Marvel) when promoting Avengers? I know that the whole Loki love became much more evident during that promo tour but surely at that stage, the main bulk of the script would have been formed. I know changes are made last minute all the time so it’s extremely possible that Feige saw the love he got and decided to make his part bigger but it sounds to me as though he’s over selling his involvement in that process.

      • Lucrezia says:

I definitely agree that he’s over-selling his involvement, but I have totally different logic. To me it’s just the obvious character arc: Loki and Thor are pals, Loki betrays Thor, Loki redeems himself and they’re pals again … until he eventually betrays Thor. Again. Rinse and repeat. That’s the way it happens in mythology and the comic-verse. It’s just what Thor and Loki do. So obviously Thor2 is going to have Loki redeem himself and fight along-side Thor.

The reason I don’t think your logic works is that Marvel is notorious for re-working their movies. They just shot new scenes for Dark World this week! So I doubt the script was set in stone a year ago. Alan Taylor just said about Feige: “It’s like they sort of have to pry the film out of Marvel’s hands and put it up on the screen because he never wants to stop improving things.” http://www.themovies.co.za/2013/08/14/director-alan-taylor-talks-thor-the-dark-world-reshoots-rumours-about-on-set-conflicts-and-music-issues/

  25. Leah says:

Omg! He is so needy and pretensious its hilarious!

  26. Lindy79 says:

    Sorry to hijack but…
    Holy Marshmallow Forest..that first picture…

    http://swissmisandry.tumblr.com/post/58157376965/benedict-cumberbatch-us-vogue-september-issue-hq

Who am i kidding, I’m not sorry.
    I regret nothing!!

    • Agnes says:

      oh…my…God…
      swoons. fans. faints.

    • j.eyre says:

Definitely hijack-worthy. That first shot – oh my, indeed!

If you will excuse me now, I must skedaddle out of here. I am not supposed to be on Hot Cumberbatch threads – Fanty kicks me.

      • Lindy79 says:

I have stared at it for way longer than is healthy..Should a photo have that kind of effect?

        God bless you Annie Lebovitz!

      • j.eyre says:

Absolutely they should have those kinds of effects on you. I have entered into marriage with 4 different photos. They are not legally binding unions, of course, California does not recognize polygamy.

There is a particular photo of CHemboy that has filed a restraining order against me.

      • Lindy79 says:

        Good to know.
I’m currently plotting my stalking schedule for that photo. We shall bump into each other unexpectedly in a cafe, our witty banter and mutual hatred of rain and fire, it will fall madly in love with me, we’ll move in together, have a cover binding ceremony and I’ll give birth to little mini leaflets.

        *goes for a lie down*

      • T.fanty says:

Screw you. I’m just going to start mailing him pictures of my ginger babies wearing my home-knit sweaters. I won’t have to look; he’ll hunt me down.

      • Lindy79 says:

        http://swissmisandry.tumblr.com/image/58158585868

You don’t mind me coming too do you? Ive been straddling this photo since I saw it. I can only be removed surgically

      • Anna says:

The first pic carries its own particular type of ‘attractive.’ But the cig in the second one just kills it for me. Ugh, ugh, ugh.

      • Anna says:

Lady Jane, which particular CHarming photo might that be?

      • EscapedConvent says:

        @Lindy,

Lindy, the esteemed Annie Liebovitz has today blitzed what was left of my sanity.

If that portrait (yes! it’s a portrait) of Cumby does not reduce you to a blithering mess, nothing ever will. She is so brilliant & his expression is devastating.

I will probably think of it as “the romantic hero portrait” because I’m weird like that. 😉

Also, your romantic/stalking vignette with this pic, & the resulting leaflet babies, is the funniest thing I’ve heard in ages.

      • tizzyfizzy says:

This may be talked about more, tomorrow, if it’s a CB post, but!

In the article, I think we’re seeing the redefinition of Cumberbatch.

No discussion of children or families (at least that the author quoted. It seems the author had to “summarize” chunks of Cumby’s answers?). Talk about how he feels like he’s “more in his 20’s now” then when he really was. I’m thinking this is a better approach.

Lots of nice quotes from friends (including “old friends”…good grief, that phrase is forever going to remind me of the Ibiza debacle)

      • Lindy79 says:

Thankfully no Ibiza friends sightings since or mentions haha

      • MissMary says:

@TizzyFizzy: Looks like some of it is comprised of quotes from other interviews (the stuff from Oldman, etc) and some of it is the usual “so tell me about your school days” stuff…

      • Tish says:

No. It’s all new. The Oldman one as well.

      • Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

TommyAnnE is weeping into his minibar at the sight of this. Annie Leibovitz. Our Cumby has arrived.

      • Lindy79 says:

Annie Leibovitz AND a 4 page profile spread in the September issue which is the most coveted of all Vogue issues.

Honestly, this is SUCH a big deal for anyone, I didn’t even know he had this coming up. I know I am biased but I think that if TommyAnnE had this, he’d have been mentioning it all over the place and possibly wearing a Vogue t-shirt with “please buy the September issue, I’m in it you know! Annie Lebowitz shot it, she kept telling me what a big fan she was, I had to stop and say Annie, please I’m here for YOU!” on the back.

*it may have been a very big t-shirt in my head, possibly a Rip Van Winkle style night shirt*

    • Angela says:

I know I’m in the minority but I loveeeeeee when he has that little facial hair. Ugh it just adds on to his strange yet beautiful face.

      • Tingle says:

@Angela yes I am also a fan of the stub. Idk it just adds something to his face like you said.

    • T.fanty says:

I know! I’m surprised CB didn’t cover this imperious foxiness.

    • T.fanty says:

I’m sorry, Tom who? Every other thought just completely fell out of my head.

*sharpening my inherited shanks in case that harlot Eve tries to return*

My daughter just asked me why I’m licking my iPhone.

      • Tingle says:

Lol. I Miss eve. She needs to come back. If you think about it Cumby never cheated on her lol. He’s still hers…ok she owns a small part of him lol

      • tizzyfizzy says:

Did anyone read the article with it, too? The author actually TIMED one of DUC’s responses- 10 minutes! For an answer that boiled down to, “No.”

This is why I think Cumby does better with taped interviews… you get a sense for his rambling!

      • Tingle says:

And yes with the Tom who?
I am currently watching my tumblr go ape shit for cumby in vogue.

      • T.fanty says:

Okay, but I define “small part” as a toe, or appendix, or something. I need the rest.

    • MissMary says:

Just a moment… *fans self* Unf.

  27. Browniecakes says:

I love how he spoiled the entire plot of the fairy movie to get to the importance of his role in it. Not cabin boy! HOOK! Like Hans Conried! Great villain!
I hope that head scratching 3D comment is not going to become catch-phrase.

  28. Why says:

Its all new for him, this massive attention. He’s learning, not so fast but, slowly. He can take his time,2busy over analyzing everything.

  29. Tingle says:

God I can’t wait for Kaiser to post those Cumby vogue pics tomorrow lol.

  30. Miss M says:

@Anna@j.eyre: I agree with you. I think he is real. He is intellectual and yes, he is a pro. These Cumberbitches get all whining that their Lizard King will never ever be as charming, polite and enthusiastic as Tom. They like their lizard because he reflects their negativity and b*tchness so well. *Yawn to you, Cumberb*tches* Go find a book to read! :p

    • T.fanty says:

Your argument is null and void. Exhibit A-Z: see link above.

      • Miss M says:

@T.Fanty: Hahaha, you are so…WRONG!!! And you know it! Team up with a certain poet we know (Ahem) and write some fanfic to let your Hiddles fantasies free! LOL

      • T.fanty says:

I can’t. I’ve forgiven Drunk Uncle Cumby for his birthday debacle. TommyAnne is back to wearing the French maid uniform and standing quietly in the corner with a tray of protein shakes and sports drinks for when I let Cumby up for air.

    • j.eyre says:

Don’t forget he is really cute. That’s always my go-to argument.

      • Miss M says:

@j.eyre: not only cute, but he packs some major bulge… *Hiddleconda* haven’t you heard?! They wish their favorite had that feature! 🙂

      • j.eyre says:

Heard? Darling, what do you think I am doing with TommyannE in the Sunroom? I wasn’t talking about candle-making in my “wick” reference.

      • Miss M says:

@j.eyre: aha! Now I know why I haven’t heard him singing “Bare necessities” at Thornfield. He completely disappeared from my sight. Please, take “good care” of him. He needs you, especially now that I traded him for Hunnam.

    • EscapedConvent says:

      @Miss M!

Girl, I like my lizard because of his dreamy aquamarine eyes. (They match the color of my birthstone & I feel this is a solid & rational reason.)

I will find a book as soon as I unpack/re-pack all these thousands of them….

  31. Lucy says:

Tom H. and Anne H. Have more in common than I thought lol

  32. Tingle says:

    @T.Fanty perfect definition.

  33. Browniecakes says:

@Crumpets and Crotchshots: From your link:’“One must never miss an opportunity of quoting things by others which are always more interesting than those one thinks up oneself,” Alain de Botton.’ That so describes TH. Thank you!
And if TH lists what Thor’s 9 Realms are in an interview one more time I’m going to lose it.

  34. duchess of hazard says:

Idek, I like the fact that Hiddleston actually brings his education to his profession. Homeboy read Classics at Cambridge, I’d expect him to be bringing his education to his work.

  35. Rux says:

He is burdened with glorious purpose…..

    Loki is so hot.

  36. Browniecakes says:

Ahhh, that’s what TommyAnnE means. Perfect description.

  37. Portia says:

I agree with him that great villains are complicated characters. Not so sure if the Hook in this Pirate Fairy is that sort of complex villain though. It’s a little girls’ movie, can’t have too much crazy going on there. Though those pixies are pretty psychotic on their own (Tink did try to kill Wendy out of jealousy after all).

I like his earnest long-winded replies. I’m tired of actors giving the same cut and paste response for every character (hero or villain) they play, “Oh yeah it was so much fun playing XYZ and it was SUCH an amazing experience and I’m so excited to see what everyone thinks.” That’s all they say, Oscar contender or summer blockbuster, same answer. Hiddleston might be playing the same archetype and knows he has to give the same reply more or less but at least, the guy tries to add something fresh each time. Whether or not people like it is well…different strokes for different folks.

And he probably takes acting too seriously because of how much his dad disapproved and put it down. It seems like he tries to convince himself more than us that this is the correct career choice. Especially now with the dearth of roles coming his way. Poor cutie, I hope his luck turns.

  38. allons-y alonso says:

Sorry Hiddles dear, but i don’t agree with your definition of anthropology. *Excuse me while i hop onto my anth soap box.* Simply human nature? That’s a very armchair point of view. If anything, anthropology is about understanding different processes of connection – how people impact upon society and how society impacts upon people.

    • Crumpets & Crotchshots says:

      THANK YOU. 🙂

      • allons-y alonso says:

        No, thank you, C&C 😉
As much as I adore Hiddleston and think he’s a great actor – (and not gonna lie, I’m a bit of a sapiosexual and he can say some wonderfully intelligent things) – I’m too much of an academic bitch to ignore these sorts of things. One of my majors was anth and I really hate it when people incorrectly dumb it down like that.

  39. Esmerelda says:

Poor Hiddles, such a try hard.
He could well be the new Hugh Grant, he just needs to… Somebody please dress him in period clothing and drop him on Emma Thompson’s doorstep, stat.
Alternatively, a Guy Ritchie’s remake of Fight Club.
But really, Hiddles, just be a proper male pin up, smile, wave and stop talking.

  40. A says:

Ugh, give me Crispin Glover instead of this wannabe pseudo intellectual arteest.

  41. lc says:

He needs to grow his hair out to all of its Wallander glory. That’s when casting agents will want him for more roles. Sexy bitch face Magnus is so much hotter than clean cut grinning Tom.

  42. Helena says:

Maybe a photoshoot similar to the Cumby one for Vogue, would help. Like Cumbs, one arm flung back, one knee up, in almost total abandon. Plus a look that says, ” Come here – and I will make you use me- until your wits have disappeared forever”. It works better than a song, a dance and lots of analysis about acting. Release your inner tart, Mr Hiddles and all will be well. Incidentally, the American issue of Vogue can be ordered online but be sure you go for next month’s September issue, in which Cumbs is looking hotter than is humanly possible.

    • Browniecakes says:

TH is still in LA I believe. Why is he not papped doing anything? Bon Iver probably is not playing the Viper Room on Sunset, but still. Dinner, clubs, at least LA’s SoHo House?

    • Sixer says:

But he’s tried the magazining – first he was mocked for wearing dragonflies on his jacket, then he was derided for looking like Paedo Pete with Cara Delaimalsoveryposh. Annie Liebowitz it was not.

  43. Amy says:

Lorddddd I just saw those Cumberbatch pics and he is looking hella fine. The 2nd one I think they did a bad photoshop job but overall he is delish. I will be picking up that magazine as soon as it goes on sale.

  44. Amanda says:

I don’t think he takes acting “too seriously”. Drama and literature are of critical importance- exploring the human condition; what’s more important than that? He’s a classically trained actor, though, and the Hollywood movies he’s started being in don’t matter as much as the plays- Shakespeare, etc- that he’s used to doing.

    • Linda L says:

      @Amanda
“Drama and literature are of critical importance- exploring the human condition; what’s more important than that?”
      Gosh.
Well, IMHO, let’s see. What is more important than- actors, acting?

      Including, but limited to:
doctors, nurses, firefighters, police, military personnel, teachers, Moms, Dads, grandparents, people who run food banks, clergy, dentists, people who run local non-profit organizations, school bus drivers, counselors, cashiers, servers, food service prep people, tailors, machinists, the guys who get the electricity on for thousands during a storm, truck drivers, factory workers…If I have left out a profession, I apologize.

I am of the thought that pretty much EVERY other profession is infinitely more important than…acting. I like movies and plays. But what irks me is how this job is elevated to something so much MORE than what the rest of us do- by people who “play ALL the chords on the piano!!!!”

Yeah, he still should be smacked for that one.

I get what you are saying. But I always loved Michelle Pfeiffer’s comment that “acting was just a job, one step up from prostitution.”

  45. LilyRose says:

I find the earnestness appealing, especially when he makes an effort to speak in another language.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=leien1uIUm4

  46. linkle says:

Late to the party, but did anyone notice that “feminist British film documentary”/Hiddles fangirl jolly to London has secured its second round of funding? All $15k of it. Even his PR guy has tweeted his support for it.

  47. paranormalgirl says:

I only find him attractive when he’s Loki.

  48. Lindy79 says:

    *shuffles awkwardly*

    Awwww, thank you 🙂

  49. lady_luck says:

Something about his face just makes me want to punch it. He signifies to me that highschool bully who was very passive-aggressive in his bullying ways as he thought he was oh-so intellectual and “cool” and above it all. I could be wrong, but I doubt it.I think my perception and intuition of him is bang on.

    • Side-Eye says:

This is actually really accurate! He’s like a passive-aggressive version of Jonah Hill’s character in MegaMind.
