Cate Blanchett goes without eyebrows for AnOther Mag: enchanting or terrible?

OH NOES. What happened to Cate Blanchett?! These are photos from Cate’s AnOther Magazine editorial, and I guess some stylist/makeup artist/photographer thought it would be cool or avant-garde to photograph Cate looking like some animal chewed off most of her eyebrows. Cate usually has some of the most amazing skin ever, so I’m at a loss to explain why she looks so corpsey and… not good. This shoot is horrible, right? I mean, I’m all for getting actors to step out of their comfort zone for an interesting photo shoot, but there is NOTHING attractive in these pics. That being said, they could have been so much worse, I suppose. Oh, I guess I should note that these photos are an homage to “1920s androgynous cabaret performer Anita Berber.” Sure.

Cate is promoting Blue Jasmine, which will probably earn her a second Oscar this year. She really threw down the gauntlet for actresses this awards season. Meryl Streep will be likely be challenging her, and maybe Amy Adams too…? But right now I think it might be all about Cate. Here are some highlights from her AnOther interview:

Cate said: “I have this thing on film where I do die quite a lot. And I suddenly realised, I was always dying on my birthday.

“I played an Irish journalist, Veronica Guerin, in a film that about two and a half people saw — usually two to three people see the films that I make — and I was sitting on a highway doing this scene where she got shot and it was my birthday. Then I got beaten up in another experience on film the next year on my birthday. And later I made a film with David Fincher called The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and I died then too, on my birthday, on a hospital bed — and that was a relief.”

Blanchett, about to appear in Woody Allen’s new comedy drama Blue Jasmine, would like to double the size of her brood to six, despite her home life being “chaos”. She and her playwright husband Andrew Upton have three sons — Dashiell, 11, Roman, nine, and five-year-old Ignatius. She said: “I’d have three more. It’s the chaos of it. I love it. I am so unhappy being away from them. They are so funny and wicked.”

[From The Standard]

I like how blasé she is about how under-watched some of her films are. I’ll admit it, I never saw Veronica Guerin, although I do remember that she received good reviews for that one. As for her desire to expand her brood… she wants six kids just like Brad and Angelina? Maybe she’s longing for at least one girl in a family of boys? She should adopt!

Here’s AnOther’s behind-the-scenes video. Hilariously, this sounds like p0rn music, right?

She does not look her best but these are very artistic photos.

    • Kiddo says:

You summed it up perfectly. She has a very expressive face and the shoot is about a different form of beauty. I think it has more to do with her ability to emote instead of standard sexual attractiveness, although she doesn’t look awful in that regard either.

      • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

I agree. She does not look “pretty” but the photos (except for the first one) are beautiful. You can see her gorgeous bone structure and skin, and the red coat and red slip dress look stunning.

    • nicegirl says:

I kind of love the one of her in red that seems very marcel marceau-ish, in a way.

  2. Lucy2 says:

The worst photos I have ever seen of her, yet she is still somehow striking.
That is probably the first time I’ve ever seen her kids names in print. I like how low key she has always been, despite being in the top tier if actresses.

  3. Dawn says:

Is this a bad photo shoot or just more high art that we little people don’t understand? I am not a fan of whatever it is but this woman does have a great body and her skin is just perfection.

  4. Anna says:

I absolutely LOVE this editorial. I am getting major SWINTON vibes.

    • Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

+1 Same. I read the title on my phone and I was preparing myself to hate it but I don’t. I love the Tilda Swinton vibe, not many women can pull it off without looking like they’re trying too hard.

    • Bianca says:

I was just thinking that this looks like the latest make-up trend on planet SWINTON.

    • RHONYC says:

      bingo!

loves ya Cate, but stay in your lane gurl.

Tilda got dat shiz on LOCK! 😉

      • Guest says:

Those of you stating Swinton clearly have no knowledge of anything beyond the 90s.
Lmao at you thinking Swinton owns or created or even popularized this aesthetic.
        Stay in school kids.

  5. Eleonor says:

I am in LOVE with this photos!

  6. Atlantapug says:

I LOVE her! These photos are not her best. The styling is terrible. She looks like a mime that raided Liza Minelli’s closet.

  7. Nessa says:

These pictures are pretty amazing. I love that cover shot.

  8. ds says:

It’s like they did a homage to Klaus Nomi. I like the one in the red coat- she’s beautiful.

  9. blue marie says:

I don’t think it’s a bad shoot, very mannequin like.. I really like the red dress/slip.

  10. Willa says:

She kinda looks like Shirley Manson in these photos. I like them.

  11. josi says:

Are you kidding? I love these photos. If it weren’t for her and Tilda Swinton there’d hardly be celebrity photoshoots worth looking twice at.

  12. chloe says:

I love the red bow coat picture, the emotion of her face is brilliant.

  13. carol says:

she looks like goop in the first photo

  14. sasa says:

    Love the photos.

  15. pretty says:

do people really think she is beautiful? like in a total superficial sense? i’m sure she is a nice person and a great actress unlike, say, julia roberts or gyneth paltro etc but like in a superficial way, do people really think she is beautiful beautiful?? i don’t see it.

    • Lucrezia says:

I’d say striking rather than pretty/beautiful.

She’s certainly chameleonic. Sometimes she’s stunningly beautiful, sometimes she’s handsome, sometimes she’s ordinary, and sometimes she’s down-right odd-looking, perhaps even ugly. (IMO, these photos fall into the latter category.) But she’s always eye-catching, regardless of whether it’s pretty or not.

    • Gigi says:

      +1

I think she has a bit of man-face, nothing feminine.. rough and not pretty at all

But she is a great actress

    • Sachi says:

      IMO she is magnetic.

Not conventionally beautiful, but there is something about her that draws your eye and keeps it focused on her.

A friend of mine described her as ethereal. Out of this world.

Whenever she’s on screen, I can’t look away. It’s not just her acting. She is very charismatic and “alluring” in a non-sexual way.

    • chloe says:

I think the fact that she’s not perfect makes her pretty. She has a way of being graceful in her movements on screen that is beautiful, of course I get sick of the cookie cutter actresses that have to go under the knife or suddenly loose tons of weight (not that Cate is fat, this is referring to other actresses) to fit the Hollywood stereotype.

  16. themummy says:

Veronia Guerin was an amazing movie. I really loved it. I’m surprised more people haven’t seen it, actually.

These photos are striking, but I have to say…I don’t think she looks comfortable in them like she usually does in photos.

  17. Jayna says:

I don’t like it, but I love the drama of the red slip. The color is amazing on her.

  18. akivasha says:

Everyone should see Veronica Guerin. She is AMAZING in it. Very powerful story.

  19. Vampi says:

Pic #2 (head turned to side)
    “She looka likea man.”
    I know..I know… Bad MadTV impression, but I couldn’t help myself!!! 😉

  20. Londerland says:

Very striking pics – I don’t think she looks attractive, but then I don’t think she’s supposed to, here. The weepy French mine theme is an odd choice but at least it makes a change from the usual “lie in your pants with your mouth open like you had a lobotomy, and we’ll photoshop it to death” stuff.

  21. Ciara says:

Veronica Guerin was a fantastic film. Many people in Ireland saw that film, so that is at least a couple of million people. Cate was amazing as Veronica, even though the accent was a bit off. Its an important film for Irish people and needed to be made, maybe internationally is was not successful but she should be proud of her performance.
She looks a bit creepy in these photos.

  22. Lucy says:

Yeah, the editorial isn’t doing her any favours, but it’s not her fault at all. It’s just too Swinton for her. I mean, they both have that eccentric vibe, that’s for sure, but Cate’s a bit more restrained. Anyways, I love what she says about her kids!!

  23. LilyRose says:

Are you kidding? These photos are so beautiful. The last one reminds me of the work of Cindy Sherman; the light and composition, especially.

  24. Sachi says:

Still more amazing than I’ll ever be. 😀 😀

    That bone structure is unreal.

  25. Claudia says:

I like these photos, they look like paintings.

  26. StaCat1 says:

I don’t care what they did to her eyebrows…She is amazing and awesome.

  27. Erm says:

    Amazing.
