No, Prince Harry & Meghan will not apologize to Prince William & Kate

Even before the Sussex family moved back to the UK in late August, there were some odd rumors flying around. One of those rumors was that Prince Harry and Meghan were talking to staffers about possibly issuing a general apology to the Windsors, something along the lines of “perhaps we went too far, we’re sorry if we caused you any pain.” At the time, it sounded like Prince William (in particular) was begging the Sussexes for an apology, which he would then reject! Then, once the Sussexes moved, the royalists were furious because Harry “waltzed” back into Britain without groveling or apologizing. You get the idea: this whole “force Harry and Meghan to apologize” story has been circulating for a while, and the British tabloids brought it up again this week. Interestingly, there are denials across the board.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are not planning to apologize to Prince William and Kate Middleton, a source tells PEOPLE, disputing a new report about a purported apology plan.

The U.K.’s Express reported on Oct. 6 that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex hoped to apologize to the Prince and Princess of Wales over comments made during their 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey, describing the reported move as part of a wider effort toward reconciliation.

A source close to Harry, 42, and Meghan, 45, tells PEOPLE that the claim is “nonsense.”

The outlet specifically claimed that the Sussexes planned to apologize over Meghan’s revelation during the interview that there had been “concerns and conversations” within the royal family about how dark Prince Archie’s skin might be before he was born.

The report comes amid renewed attention on the relationship between the two couples following Harry and Meghan’s return to the U.K. with their children, Prince Archie, 7, and Princess Lilibet, 5. PEOPLE has previously reported that while Harry has made some progress in rebuilding his relationship with his father, King Charles, there has been no comparable thaw with William.

“There’s no movement, especially on William’s side,” a source previously told PEOPLE.

[From People]

“The outlet specifically claimed that the Sussexes planned to apologize over Meghan’s revelation during the interview that there had been ‘concerns and conversations’ within the royal family about how dark Prince Archie’s skin might be before he was born…” I mean, that was a key revelation during the Oprah interview, that there had been open conversations between various royals expressing “concerns” about Archie’s skin color. Why would Meghan and Harry apologize for that? Especially when the Windsors have never been able to deny it? Even via “sources,” there’s never been a flat denial, it’s just been William pointing a finger at Charles, who pointed a finger at Kate, who pointed a finger at Camilla. Which led me to believe that all four of them had racist “concerns.”

Page Six also had a denial, with Tom Sykes telling them that the apology story is “total rubbish” and that “Harry has always said he will never apologize for anything.” Yeah… methinks this is Charles and William communicating with Harry through the press. They’re telling him that a big public apology is what they need to take the next steps. I hope Harry and Meghan see through this asinine gambit.

Charles, William, Kate, The Mail are all running out of interest in their stories/point of view. Ppl are literally bored of their lies about Harry/Meghan. OLD NEWS.

    • Slough says:

I totally agree. The bottom of the barrel has been scraped and there’s very little left to fill a headline. When Harry & Meghan news is boring the monarchy is doomed.

  2. StillDouchesOfCambridge says:

Yes people are bored of eating the same tired salad. But anyway, the racists bizarrely we’re the ones protecting themselves behind a grave illness, 2 days apart.

  3. MidnightSuperNova says:

It’s been 10 years since Harry & Meg met and married and it’s out of their scope of thinking that Harry isn’t Will’s lackey. He really thinks that Harry should beg to be in his good graces when HE is the one who assaulted was/is part of the machine that fed the tabloids lies to report about Meghan.

Harry & Meghan left so that they can build and maintain their lives without the machine. Harry doesn’t need Will, nor should he bow to a destructive man-baby.

  4. Amyb says:

The only apology should be “sorry your wife is a lying racist and your husband is a violent bully”

  5. Brassy Rebel says:

I’ve always thought that the reason they disclosed the “concerns” about the baby’s skin tone and Meghan’s suicidal ideation was to explain why they left. Because everyone wanted an explanation and it was the truth that the UK had become unlivable. And not just because of the press.

    • Jais says:

Im trying to remember how the conversation about skin color came up. Bc part of it was also them wanting to correct false headlines. At the time, the story was that the Sussexes said that they didn’t want Archie to have any titles. So Meghan was explaining that when they were in the uk there were simultaneous conversations happening, about changing the LP so Archie wouldn’t have a Prince title and also about concerns around his potential skin color, and leaving her to wonder why these conversations were happening at the same time. I think that’s why the skin color convo came up maybe? but I’m not one hundred so someone can correct me.

      • Becks1 says:

That’s how it came up – I actually kind of wonder if Meghan meant to bring it up or if it just tumbled out bc that was a pretty emotional part of the interview. That’s partly why I think Oprah did the “wait wait” thing that became a meme – she was trying to pace Meghan a little morel.

But yes, your general memory is correct Jais – it was about security and how that was being tied to the titles, and how the palace was talking about changing the LPs and this was while she was pregnant and there were conversations about how dark the baby might be and what that would “mean” or “look like” and that’s when Oprah sort of paused things and walked through that particular issue.

      • Lorelei says:

It was so obnoxious hearing how many Americans rolled their eyes at that and acted like it was a totally normal conversation that many families have. Which may be true, but there is a an enormous difference between “curious” and “concerned.” It’s not just semantics.

The BRF was worried that Archie would be “too dark” and we all know it.

      • Becks1 says:

@Lorelei and I think we all knew it was Kate because after the interview there was so much discussion about how Meghan treated Kate in that interview…..and she said she was a good person who apologized when she had upset Meghan? But it makes sense that it was Kate who didn’t want her children standing on the balcony next to their Black cousins.

      • Lorelei says:

@Becks, ITA with your entire comment but your last sentence especially. We know that Kate *lives* for those balcony appearances. It’s probably when she feels the most like Diana. Because all she needs to do is stand there in black looking somber, then compare herself to balcony pics of Diana. She fails in every other way.

(Btw I joined Threads just to find you; I followed you and DM’d you and woke up to a message that my account had been suspended 🫠. No idea what the issue is since I definitely didn’t break any rules, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

      • Becks1 says:

OMG!!!! Threads is so weird sometimes with the suspension etc. Threads jail!

I see your message! it was in my “requests” mailbox. Yay!

      • Gtwiecz says:

@Lorelei and @Becks1 I was also on Threads and probably following you both when my account was BANNED. I don’t even know what comment I made but I was always careful to not use foul language or threaten anyone. Pretty sure a deranger reported me. For some reason my Instagram is still ok but they won’t let me open a new Threads account since they are linked. And when I trued to open a new IG account just to get to Threads it doesn’t let me either, maybe because of IP address. I miss the Threads Squad and also the politics. I’d hate to go back to Twitter just to see royal commentary. I’m doing it on Reddit subs that are Sussex friendly.

  6. Shiela Kerr says:

Those gutter rats modus operandi is to spread a rumor give it traction by having other gutter rats pick it up and this becomes the story across multiple platforms. Same with the Sussexes relationship, just spread the rumor othe outlets will do the dirty work by spreading it across multiple platforms. As the Sussexes spokesperson expressed, pure nonsense.

    • paintybox says:

Exactly – it’s propaganda and that is how propaganda works. Repetition, source amnesia, processing fluency.

      • Brassy Rebel says:

And if they did apologize, the Windsors and the tabs would then use that to claim that H&M had concocted all these stories, that there was never any truth to them. They know full well that what the Sussexes told Oprah will follow them to their graves. And they need an apology to get out from under because they know they’re never beating the allegations.

    • Gtwiecz says:

And then a million royalist AI accounts spread it on social media.

  7. Amy Bee says:

Good. They have nothing to apologize for. As Kaiser said the Royal Family has never denied that there were concerns about Archie’s skin colour.

    • Lurker says:

Fun fact, in the interview they didn’t mention any names “because it would be damaging to the person”. After Piers Morgan outed Charles and Kate as the culprits (never confirmed by the Sussexes) now the British press basically says it was William and Kate, why else should they apologize to these two for the remark? Seems the entire family was involved.

  8. Hypocrisy says:

The “they must apologize to Waity and Willy” articles were nauseating and ridiculous because they are being pushed while the BRF once again refuses to acknowledge, apologize or make restitution for their involvement with slavery in the past and they still have family members who were clients of a human trafficker who sold minor children to Andy. But somehow it’s the Sussex’s expected and harassed by the tabloids to apologize. The Sussex’s have absolutely nothing to apologize to that family for whatsoever

    • Lorelei says:

      Good points.

One of my pet peeves just in everyday life is dealing with people who will never, ever apologize for anything even when they’re clearly in the wrong. I’ve really been stressing to my son that to apologize makes *you* the bigger person.

The Windsors should be the ones apologizing for numerous things, but they would never.

      • sunnyside up says:

Perhaps because they know they are guilty, but haven’t got the guts to say sorry. The longer the lies go on the more difficult it gets.

  9. Tessa says:

Keen did not deny the crying story so meghan set the record straight. Keen playing victim is a joke

    • Tis True, Tis True says:

I still believe they both cried, but not in front of each other. So both see the other as lying.

      • Shelley says:

What would kate be crying about? The fact that her wedding dress designer was NOT going to be re-doing the bridesmaid dresses??

      • Ash says:

Please stop with this @they both cried” NONSENSE! Kate tried to pull rank and Meghan shut her down. Kate is the bully. wtf would she be crying for??

      • Lawrenceville says:

No, this “they both cried” trash was first started by Camilla Karen Too-mean to save face after Duchess Meghan set the record straight about the years long smear that Camilla and KHate Middleton had been spreading that contrary to what KHate Middleton and her minions were spreading that Duchess Meghan made KHate Middleton cry, it had actually been KHate Middleton that had bullied Duchess Meghan to tears. If KHate Middleton cried, it was never about them incidents where she practically bullied Meghan on matters concerning Duchess Meghan’s wedding. If they both had cried, that would have been the story from the beginning, but it wasn’t.

      • sunnyside up says:

I remember Kate sending flowers to Meghan to apologise, I was ever so pleased that it had happened, I think the lie was first told by someone else, it surfaced some weeks later, someone who thought that knowing that she had admitted a fault was bad. I actually though that the lie might have come from her mum. (Being a pushy mum) But who ever did do it actually damaged Kate as well by keeping the lie going for years. I would love to know who did do it. Was it just the media making a story…

  10. Becks1 says:

Ha, I dont even care if this is actually coming from a source close to the Sussexes or if its totally made up. I’m just glad to see in writing “no actually they’re not going to apologize, stop dreaming.”

Meghan explained in the interview why they were doing it – if the Firm was going to continue to actively brief against them, how could they expect that they remained silent? My feeling has always been that if the Firm and the press had just left them alone after they moved to the US – especially the palace briefings to the press -they might not have done Oprah. I think Spare and the docuseries likely would have still happened, but the docuseries may have had a different perspective. But the palace continued to attack them for a solid YEAR and then was shocked that they spoke out.

Their big sin was not just accepting the press abuse and the way they were treated within the Firm, especially by the Cambridge/Wales. And its gross that the press wont come out and say that.

    • Amy Bee says:

      So true.

    • Jais says:

Okay, yeah, that was my understanding, that a lot of it was about correcting lies in the headlines from BM and the RF briefings. And I hope they did say nonsense. Why should they apologize for others having discussions about a baby’s potential skin color. Please.

    • sunnyside up says:

The most important thing for the press is to stay on the royal rota. Truth is of no consequence.

    • IdlesAtCranky says:

The press will never acknowledge that they have relentlessly bullied the Sussexes for a decade and counting, both at the behest of the various “royals” and even more, to rake in the money.

They never took responsibility after they hounded Diana to death, and they’ve been running the same terroristic practices against the Sussexes, among other less profitable targets, ever since — they’ve never stopped. Look at what they just did to Jason Arday.

One of my main takeaways from reading Swan Song is how the press went after Charles Spencer relentlessly, openly taking revenge on him, after he called them out as having blood on their hands during his eulogy for his sister. I had no idea.

I’m all in for freedom of the press, but there desperately needs to be a conversation and legal regulations put in place that differentiate between reporting facts and spinning lies for money.

  11. Angelica Schuyler says:

The problem is that everyone else is supposed to fall on their swords to save face for the monarch and the heir and Harry and Meghan refuse to do that.
They’ve stayed from the expectation that everyone is supposed to be happy to suffer the abuse to stay in the royal orbit. So H&M standing up for themselves and refusing to acquiesce had broken the royal system. William hasn’t gotten over Meghan telling him to kindly remove his finger from her face. As far as he’s concerned, he’s allowed to mistreat anyone he wants, including his brother and his sister-in-law.

This is why they use the word ‘American’ as a pejorative descriptor for Meghan. She’s an outsider unwilling to play along to the hierarchical normative sh-t eating required to go along and get along in the British class system. (Too bad, so sad)

    • Puff Updater says:

I do like how she got the hell out of Dodge when the dime finally dropped about just exactly what kind of abuse both covert and overt she was expected to endure on a daily basis. Asking Bald Willy to kindly remove his finger from her face was equivalent in his mind to kicking him in the nads lol.

      • sunnyside up says:

Harry had been better trained by the system, he didn’t hit William when William put his finger in her face. He’s the heir.

      • Kasztanka says:

        @puff ubdater and others:)
Yes, the “finger” incident perfectly encapsulates Meghan’s attitude and dignity. I love her for it—not just because we have so much in common 🤣 (making Doria and Meghan feel especially close to my heart), but because this small, petite woman shook a centuries-old institution to its very foundations simply by demonstrating intelligence, refinement, elegance, and dignity—plus millions in the bank that she’d earned herself.
The royals and their supporters assumed that since Meghan had been “allowed” to cross the palace threshold and granted the “honor” of mingling with that crowd, she would bow and scrape and grovel in gratitude…
Instead, she invited Harry’s brother over for a casual dinner and treated him like her boyfriend’s brother rather than the heir to the throne; she welcomed Williama i Kate barefoot and in jeans, greeting them with hugs instead of curtsies.
I can just picture their jaws hitting the floor.
        William might have
        adapted more quickly—
albays is turned on whenever Meghan was around—but Kate, despite having been snubbed and belittled within the palace herself, put on her full “royal” act, complete with formal attire and diamonds, to assert her superiority and put Meghan in her place. She ended up looking like a pathetic snob, though, because Meghan wasn’t impressed in the slightest; she simply greeted her as Harry’s sister-in-law and went back to the stove to tend to the dinner she’d cooked herself. God, what a sacrilege—serving them a homemade lunch 🤣🤣
They just can’t wrap their heads around it. There are so many “Beckhams” out there—people who beg, grovel, humiliate themselves, and follow them around like dogs on a leash, just for the “privilege” of gnawing on a bone tossed from the royal table—and then along comes Meghan, with all that “racial baggage,” getting a seat next to the Queen, only to take her child and husband and get the hell out of there…
The Royals will NEVER be able to stomach that.
And William—well, it’s a short step from desire to hate, but if Meghan had just cast a favorable glance his way, desire would have quickly been the only thing left.
        Meghan is mine, Harold 🤣

    • Lorelei says:

I wonder if, deep down, at least some of the Leftovers *know* that that is the exact reason that SO many people love Meghan.

Because she didn’t care about their titles and money and traditions, etc. She expected them to act like decent people, and when they didn’t, she bounced. She saw right through their whole facade.

Either way, she has them shook in a way I’ve never seen before.

  12. GMHQ says:

Never complain, never explain, just brief the tabs nonstop and blame all of the resulting publicity on H&M. No one buys any of it anymore.

  13. QuiteContrary says:

It’s worth rereading Becky English’s reporting in that screenshot above on the palace reaction to the Oprah interview. It’s all “the palace is reeling” and “intense personal shock and sadness” and “horror and dismay,” but nothing about the palace denying H&M’s claims.

At least not on the front page. This shows that the palace knew it was all true — they couldn’t deny it. They could only cry and shriek about it.

The Sussexes shouldn’t apologize, ever, for telling the truth.

    • JFerber says:

But when will Bill and Kate apologize to Harry and Meghan? DARVO, privilege, entitlement. This is exactly the stance of colonialists, robbing from every country, creating conflicts and civil wars in subject countries, saying they benefited the “savage, ignorant” native populations. The original Tarzan with Johnny Weismuller and Mia Farrow’s mother, Maureen O’Sullivan, from 1932 is a perfect example of that mindset. Horrifying. So Will and Kate will never be wrong in that narrative.

    • Lorelei says:

They might have known that Meghan had receipts, and that calling her a liar would make things even worse for themselves?

      • tamra says:

She must have receipts. That is the only reason they have kept silent! I’m sure Meghan kept the apology note that came with he flowers, so there’s one receipt about the dresses.

  14. Rudy says:

    @Beaniebean 💯

  15. therese says:

I know sometimes it is hard to apologize, but sometimes it is such a small and easy thing to do: so that I don’t know why the Palace, or any of them: Kate, Will, Charles, Cam couldn’t say sorry. It does follow their MO, if someone exposes you, pretend they did it, turn the tables on them. It’s just insane thinking, and so sick. Also, the truth will set you free. Will is following a model for behavior that is archaic and sick. Perhaps they want to make up and are tired of carrying around something so heavy, but their guidelines stipulate that a royal never apologizes or admits guilt. Good luck with this one.

  16. jferber says:

Therese, I can’t believe that royal guidelines include never apologizing or admitting culpability. I think these particular royals take the attitude that nothing is ever their fault and they are never wrong. This is absurd. This is the colonial mindset that tells them everything they do is right and everyone else is wrong. It’s a political position, not reality, so that they can trample all over other people’s rights and get away with it (which they have for centuries).
