Benedict Cumberbatch covers THR: he’s a Buddhist, he hates the Internet’s vitriol

Benedict Cumberbatch covers the new issue of The Hollywood Reporter. I was going to put this off until tomorrow, just because of the sheer size of the interview and my desire to really dissect every little quote, but you Cumberbitches are already thread-jacking the other post and I’m tired of fighting it. We’ll just have lots of Cumberstories today. You can read the full THR story here – it’s a really long piece and I cut out a lot of stuff. The first part is all about Benedict’s abduction in South Africa in 2005, and while his quotes are interesting, that passage goes on and on. Here are some highlights:

His philosophy/religion: Cumberbatch speaks of being drawn to the “transcendent” and calls himself a Buddhist (at least “philosophically”), but he can just as easily leave all that, become Holmes and “imagine faking my own death.”

Interesting details: He lives in a flat in north London, which he describes as both minimalist and eclectic (“I like light; there’s not a single room in the house that doesn’t have a window”). He watches some television, including Breaking Bad and The Killing, but not much. He professes a deep admiration for Stanley Kubrick, the subject of a dissertation he wrote at university about “how within a diverse subject matter his worldview is still very unified.” He has a fondness for music, particularly Icelandic band Sigur Ros: “It transports me. It gives me a mental landscape that is very inspiring. It gives me a space in my head where I can imagine great emotion and depth.”

He loves books and hates the internet: He seems both part of this world and removed from it, with an old-fashioned liking for books (he lavishes praise on Ford Madox Ford’s Parade’s End, the basis of an HBO miniseries for which he has received an Emmy nomination) and a contempt for the Internet, where vitriol “is horrific. You can’t win. It’s like a new form of bullying. I find it quite despicable.”

Being given the portraits of himself that fans have drawn: “I’ve kept a couple that are stunning, that are just really beautiful drawings, and the rest I’ve had to give away. And I’ve told fans, ‘Look, I’m very flattered, but what do you expect me to do with it? Think about it. Would you want your room surrounded by drawings of you?’ It’s a bit weird.”

The “Cumberbitches”: “Some of them have now called themselves the Cumbercollective; that’s a slightly less offensive noun….I’m not like Holmes. I don’t have his capacity to compartmentalize. I’m now haunted with, ‘But he did want children, and now he doesn’t? What’s gone wrong? Is he gay? Can’t he commit to relationships?’ All this speculative s-t. There’s a point where I just go, ‘I’ve said all I have to say.’ ”

On Julian Assange: “The thing is this: I have a profound respect for Julian,” he says. “I also have a profound respect for the need of states to have a currency of secrets in order for Western democracy to exist and for fundamentalism to be defeated. And I don’t think Julian is interested in fundamentalism triumphing.”

He studied at a monastery and he meditates: “It was very lonely at times but also inclusive,” he says. “There was this incredible experience of just for the first time properly thinking, ‘Oh my God! There’s so much going on in there.’ ” Cumberbatch still meditates, but “10 minutes every other week, practically. It’s very sporadic. But I do still try.”

Whether he pulled out of Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak because of Star Wars. “Absolutely not. No, no, no, no. That was nothing to do with it at all. [It was] between me and Guillermo, to be honest. It was amicable, and that’s all I’m going to say.”

What? “Sometimes as an actor you’re looking for the infinite,” he says. “If you can hold that, if you can remember that in the chaos, [it will] anchor you and give you grace and ease.”

[From THR]

He reminds the reporter at the end of the interview not to cut out his lengthy discussion about being abducted in South Africa, because it’s important to him to acknowledge that his life was saved by a stranger. So now I feel kind of bad about editing out all the stuff about his abduction, but seriously, just go read the piece. As for what I did include… have we been saying that he’s a commitment-phobe? I haven’t said that. But this is the second interview in a row where he’s been pushing back on that idea. I guess he doesn’t want people to think that he’s just banging every blonde Russian he comes across. Huh.

Lmao the cumberbitches stole your thunder aww thats hilarious.

    • Spooks says:

I used to like him, but now he’s everywhere and getting on my nerves.
      He’s to pretentious.

      • Poopsicle says:

He looks like some Anunnaki freaky cat lizard s#$!… Holy PISS, I am tired of seeing this guy plastered all over the place. RAGE!!

  2. Amanda says:

From certain angles he has the most alien-looking eyes…

  3. Amelia says:

    Suit pr0n.
Like TommyAnne, Cumby knows how to wear the hell out of a suit.
Now I’m off to read the full piece and then invite Cumby to pretty much live with me in Foyles bookshop.
Mmm, secret trysts between the bookcases interrupted by panini breaks in the cafe . . . 😉

    • Lucrezia says:

Heh 🙂 I misread Panini as punani, and was thinking it was a un-hygienic to be doing that in a food-prep area. If you’re just eating sandwiches, then carry on.

  4. Ginger says:

I’ve resisted Cumby until now that I know he’s Buddhist! So am I but I’m a practitioner not just adhering to philosophy. Hmmm he can meditate with me anytime! Open invite 🙂

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

Buddhist philosophy is the only “spiritual teaching” (if I can call it that) that has ever really appealed to me.

      • Yup, Me says:

If you haven’t ever taken the time to go on a silent meditative retreat, do it! It’s magnificent, like a spa visit for your brain and soul.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

Never been but two of my good friends have and they said it was amazeballs.

(My apologies if “amazeballs” is a disrespectful way to describe a Buddhist retreat)

      • gg says:

Buddhist philosophy is an incredibly fantastic way to deal with inner turmoil/western thought patterns and spirals. It’s very useful as a psychological tool alone, even without the religious part. Teaches you how to reduce/abandon stress, guilt, all sorts of limiting and self-strangling behaviors. If you’re stressed out about anything, I highly recommend listening to Pema Chodron. Anytime I have an interview or a conflict I always go to her books on CD for soothing advice.

      • Now and then there are Saturdays says:

Bhikku Bodhi has amazing lectures too.

  5. Pitts says:

I find this mans interviews to be rather entertaining.

  6. T.Fanty says:

I kind of love this. It’s an old-school, mildly snarky and testy Cumber-interview. I’m torn between wanting to roll my eyes and hug him.

    • j.eyre says:

      Is that window-pane he’s wearing? Uh-oh…

      • Marty says:

Just wanted to take this time to give you a slow sweet kiss goodbye Miss J. I won’t be on here much(CHemboy exceptions though). Apparently if you respectfully disagree with an admin on here, your comments get erased, so what’s the point. I love all you girls, you really made this site fun! Keep on with the funny and the sass!

    • Anna says:

I feel like if Hiddles gave this interview, we’d be calling him a pretentious try-hard, with all those statements about light and books and Kubrik and the infinite. But with Cumby we revel in it.

But he also sounds like he reads CB comment threads, bc while we’re probably not that original in our opinions, some of the complaints he drops are almost verbatim from the CB Cumbercollective commentariat.

      • Marty says:

Cumby is pretentious. Like he would look down on you if you hadn’t read certain books or know who an author is.

      • Ms. Williams says:

Hmmmm I wouldn’t be surprised if him and Hiddleston read this site. (Which I think they do and other sites). They are very good friends in real life. Won’t surprise me if they exchange convos. What I would give to listen to those convos.

      • Leah says:

        @marty

I kind of get that impression too… but at the same time, I think he’d almost revel in it- if he knew something and you were unfamiliar with it, because then he could launch into a 30 minutes lecture on it…

      • Anna says:

Hiddles totally cyberstalks himself. We expect him to read this stuff. But Cumby fronts like he’s soooo above it.

      • amanda says:

I’m over him, I couldn’t help but roll my eyes while reading this interview. Tom is harmless imo, I feel like he just wants to be accepted by the so called “higher” actors. I agree with Anna, benedict fronts like he’s above it all, but we know he’s not.

      • Sardinia says:

The stuff he is complaining about is on blogs, tumblr or just the comments section on mainstream sites. So he is clearly actively keeping tabs.

        Major turnoff!

      • Stef Leppard says:

        @Anna
It would be hard for him not to notice the CB Cumbercollective, what with constantly being hit in the face by Kaiser’s panties.

      • Tiffany :) says:

In this issue of the HR, in the “7 Days of Deals” section they wrote:

“Tom Hiddleston will replace Benedict Cumberbatch in Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak”

You folks probably already know, just wanted to share in case you didn’t!

      • Katie says:

        @Anna

Not only is that impossible given his schedule, it’s unhealthy. His PR monitors chatters, but certain sites–Tumblr, here for example–are far less important than, say, Facebook and Twitter. Less posters, less reach.

Every single speculation question he mentioned here was in that Daily Mail article. That’s where he got it from and there’s no way he could have missed it.

Wouldn’t surprise me if DM trolled social media to create that article.

      • icerose says:

Cannot agree more both Tom and BC say very similar things and have share an intelligent intellect. BC funnily enough comes can come over as acerbic as the vitriol he dislike whereas Tom just puts it to one side.
Much of what was said was pretty normal PR stuff. I have no doubts he admires Assange but the truth is that the film received very mixed reviews and was based on a bias standpoint from conception. I think BC is a good actor in the same league ad Ben Wishaw and Tom Hiddleston although I tend to put him in third place. All three are still making their mark and it will be interesting to see what happens in the next decade. I do wish however he could lighten up and avoid all this nonsensical foot stamping as with the poster incident.

    • Lindy79 says:

I’m reaching to a ridiculous extent here but given that Caitlin Moran was at Gaga as was he I could stretch and guess that the topic of the internet came up. There was a massive campaign which she was really involved in, regarding sexist and more seriously rape and bomb threats and trolling on twitter and getting providers to do more to protect users, that and the constant stories of kids being cyber bullied into suicide, could be behind at least a part of his comments.

    • Miss Jupitero says:

I want hug him. I just love him when he is introspective. I want to meditate with him and then rip his robes off and jump on his bones.

    • Stef Leppard says:

      A Cumberview.

    • EscapedConvent says:

It just struck me that this could be his “look” for The Imitation Game. Alan Turing, 1940s? The look is sleek & perfect.

  7. Magneticfieldz says:

Sorry. I don’t get the appeal. He has this wormy-like quality. Like a giant tube worm at the bottom of the sea or something.

    • T.Fanty says:

I’m actually kind of impressed that you can read the interview comment above about internet bullying and still come up with that as a response.

    • Mo says:

Thank you! So tired of all the posts about him. Couldn’t be less interested.

      • R3R4 says:

But you must be interested some how because you took the time to not only click on his post but leave a comment. Bravo!

      • Grant says:

Are we not allowed to voice our displeasure at his pervasive coverage on this site? Give someone else a chance!

  8. GeeMoney says:

I’m loving these pics of him… he looks so handsome!

Seriously… why can’t I be married to this man already?!?

  9. Abby says:

Lol sorry Kaiser if I forced you to put this post up today. He just looks so darn good in all the photos. That suit plus is it just me of he looks quite young on this cover?

The interview was just absurd though I loved his answers regarding the car jack incident and teaching at Buddhist monestry

    • Vesta says:

Ha, this article is just so full of all kind of interesting things, that it would be very hard to keep quiet about it.

But poor Kaiser – Cumberbitches are just insatiable – they thread-jack her Cumberbatch posts – to talk about Cumberbatch! 😀 (I agree this post would have been great for tomorrow, so full of goodies)

  10. Priscilla says:

What happened in South A. really must have shook him up. I mean who wouldn’t be shook up from a near death experience? Wow I never knew about that car jacking incident. Wow

  11. Lindy79 says:

I get such a Mad Men vibe from these pictures and I love it!
The little smirk in the video when looking through the window..

Where are the leather jacket, twisty curl pictures @ 0.52?

    • Vesta says:

I know. Ahh! God, it would be just heaven on earth if BC could do some little role in the final season.

**sending my wish to higher powers**

(Edit: And yeah, where are those pictures? Looked good!)

      • Lindy79 says:

That could be pretty cool actually.

Is it just me or is the clip a bit odd, in that the interview seems to have happened mid shoot with him standing up quite stiffly against the wall? I would have thought, and when reading interviews that you tend to get a better connection with the person when they’re more relaxed with you and the situation.

      • Vesta says:

@Lindy79 – I understood that the actual interview happened in his Sherlock trailer and that wall talk is just for this video clip (if that’s what you mean?)

      • Lindy79 says:

        Aha! (In Alan Partridge voice)
Thats exactly what I meant so thanks for clearing it up!

    • curlsunited says:

Lindy79, forgive me, but as soon as you mentioned “Mad Men” I was reminded of the Season 5 finale with Roger Sterling standing naked at the window of his hotel room. Which reminded me of “Frankenstein” and “To the Ends of the Earth” …

Goodness, Cumby really knows how to wear a smart suit. I also like that he didn’t take off his his friendship bracelet. It is cool to wear it along with the white shirt and cufflinks.

  12. Foggy says:

He seems to be very reserved about his personal life. I really don’t blame him about that though. Even if it does make for entertaining gossip at the end of the day it’s none of my business. This was a great interview though.

  13. Green Girl says:

He looks great in these pictures! He also looks kind of young in some of them, almost like “Rory Slipper all grown up.”

    • Evelyn says:

You just spiked my memory. I just remembered it’s been 10 years since that show debuted.

      • Green Girl says:

IKR?!? I just watched the show for the first time a few weeks ago, and I think BC has aged pretty well since then. I am also struck by the fact that he was 27 and playing the part of a college kid.

Look at the second picture from the bottom on this set of photos. Couldn’t you see it as “Rory Slippery is now a successful lawyer in the city”?

    • Evelyn says:

      Wait he was 27 then?!?!?
Wow he really has aged well. He looked so young in that show I honestly thought he was in his late teens-early 20s.

  14. Rosanne says:

I think he looks good here. I like that he looks healthy.

  15. Beth says:

    *swoons*

  16. Ilsy says:

Yep. In this interview it seems like he has read about himself on google. Based on the comment about him not wanting kids anymore, it seems like he is/was well aware of what people are saying about him. When that whole model-gate broke out I think he was aware. Count me in as one of the ones who didn’t know about the car jacking either. I think this might just be one of his best interviews yet.

  17. MissMary says:

I’m side-eyeing the Kubrick love but at least it’s not Roman Polanski, I guess.

Hmmm. Is it trendy for actors to be Buddhist? It seems like a ton of them call themselves philosophically Buddhist…

I like it when he comes off as self assured in his interviews instead of a Brit stereotype.

    • Siddhi says:

Buddhism, meditation, yoga, it simply works. So it’s not really trendy as in fashionable, it just works so it’s gaining momentum in the West even as I write. 80% of all the self-help, motivation, spiritual lifestyle books and the likes that you can read out there are Buddhism 101, even though most are being marketed without explicit references most of the times. Personally, while I had many many good things going on for me, I was unhappy with my life. Buddhism (and more so meditation) radically changed my life 10 years ago. I am now happier by the day.

    • MissMary says:

I’m Pagan (not Wiccan though) so I know there’s a lot to be said for following a path that is not one of the “Big Three” or it’s derivatives. I was just wondering about how so many actors seem to be Buddhist or embrace the philosophy. I remember, a while back (like in the 90’s), Kabbalah was the big celebrity religion (as horrible as that sounds). It was like a big trend, see who was wearing red bracelets, etc. I’d hate to see any faith path become an accessory.

    • Van says:

Benedict’s been interested in Buddhism since he was in his late teens, though. When he was 19 went to Tibet for a year to teach English to Buddhist monks. As far as I know he’s been one ever since.

  18. Wanda says:

Every since Benedict said last year that he was on Tumblr looking at things the fans do, I don’t put it past him to surf the web lol I actually find it really funny.

    • Maureen says:

He said things in this interview that he absolutely couldn’t know about unless he’s read it himself … or has his PR and/or friends reading it and reporting it back to him word-for-word. Like that bit about “Does he want kids anymore? Is he gay? What happened?”. Those are comments lifted directly from the internet, so he’s reading about himself (specifically Tumblr, because that’s where information about him is most easily accessed in quantity) or his people are. If these things really bother him then he needs to get serious about enforcing a strict blackout on this type of information. Tell your PR, tell your agents, tell your friends, “Don’t repeat this stuff to me. I don’t want to know about it”.

  19. Me says:

I really want this guy to find someone to be with. Like really be with for life. Heck I wouldn’t mind if he got back together with his ex Olivia. I actually liked them together.

  20. Quinn says:

Does anyone else think he read that Daily Mail post about himself on his so called “insecurities” posted not too long ago?

    • Maureen says:

Absolutely, without a doubt. That piece was so embarrassing. And cruel.

    • Abby says:

Oh god that article was just pathetic to say the least.

I have to say if I got that amount of hate he gets from people all over be it daily mail or ONTD…I would have certainly be depressed or have a more serious mental condition.

      • Quinn says:

Yes. I noticed that article seemed very personal towards him. Like damn did the guy reject you on a date or something? Did he burn down your house? My god.

    • Lindy79 says:

Now that you say it, that makes total sense. That article was pretty scathing about so many aspects of his personality and life. It had such a bitter and nasty element to it and was pure speculation and pieced together parts of old interviews to suit their agenda.
It would explain why this is the first time hes been extremely critical of the internet and also why he’s skeptical of some sections of the press

  21. Alexandra says:

Is anyone else getting Jude Law circa early 2000s vibe from Cumberbatch’s career? As in he’s suddenly the new hot British actor on the scene, very talented and respected by the industry, gets a ton of “major” movie roles, but his career still fizzles and slows down? I just remember how Jude Law was IT for a good stretch but none of his films lived up to the lofty expectations people had. And now Benedict has all of these major movies lined up. I hope the same thing doesn’t happen to the Cumberbatch.

    • Maureen says:

Part of Jude’s downfall were the embarrassing events surrounding his personal life. This is what I hope BC doesn’t turn into.

Jude’s movies were good and so are BC’s. It’s not always their work that stonewalls an actor.

      • LilyRose says:

Jude had a string of less than great movies; the Repo one, Alfie, and some other forgettable ones.

      • Maureen says:

        @ LilyRose

I’m not defending JL, really. I’m not even a fan per se, but I have seen him in a few really good things (enough to know he’s quite a good actor), and I know very little about him aside from that scandal that took place during his marriage. However, I can’t think of any one of the greatest actors who hasn’t made crap a few times. Denzel? Yep. Gary Oldman? Ditto. Cate Blanchett? Her, too. Meryl Streep? Yes, even Meryl. I just don’t think JL declined because of a few forgettable movies. I think he crossed a serious line with the public in regards to his private life. Same with Julia Roberts. After the “Alow Vera” phase she did very little decent work. She’s only now having a moment in the sun with Osage, after several years of raising kids and making bad movies.

      • Lindy79 says:

They even reference it in sex and the city 2 when charlotte (I think) is worried about her husband having it off with the nanny.

      • LilyRose says:

        @Maureen,

Well my original post was a snarky comment about his hairline, but I felt bad and wrote about his lesser movies. 😉

      • Angel May says:

Jude’s inherent sleaziness emerged as he aged. Don’t see that happening with Cumby.

      • T.Fanty says:

That’s par for the course. Also happened to Hugh Grant, Clive Owen and Colin Firth, all of whom display varying levels of talent. It’ll happen to Cumby too, but whether he becomes a Hugh Grant, snapping at whatever he can get, or a Colin Firth who does small, but excellent, projects that are generally very respectable, is what his actions over the next year or so will determine. There isn’t a leading-man market for Very British Men, but if he’s smart, he can garner enough credibility that he’s working regularly on good projects without having to sell his soul.

And yes, part of that is also keeping his nose clean. As soon as an actors personal life eclipses his work, he gets an expiration date.

  22. Miss Ginger says:

Fascinating. He’s quite defensive for a lot of this interview. The way that the press has misquoted him in interviews over the last 2 years is clearly having an effect on him. He’s far less trusting of them. I dont blame him at all.

    • Jenna J says:

I just read it and noticed that to.

      • Miss Ginger says:

I have a feeling that this interview took place fairly soon after that awful Daily Mail speculative hit piece – the one that harps on all his insecurities and why he’s still single. You can tell by the comments he makes that if he didn’t read it, he must have heard about it. God, that sucks. I don’t envy the man.

      • Maureen says:

Yes, particularly when he says “I’m not a commitment-phobe” (the Daily Mail article specifically accused of him of this). It’s clear he knows about this stuff–he knows about it word-for-word–not just in a passing, cursory way. I feel so bad for him. I know I shouldn’t invest my personal emotions in someone I don’t even know, but I can’t help feel a little sad for him. He just seems harmless to me and it perplexes me why some in the press have such a hate on for him.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

        @@Maureen
That’s why I could never be famous nor date a famous person. I especially feel bad for BC because it’s not like he’s going around flaunting his relationships–those that do are fair game (although it isn’t really right then either). Like that stuff with Katia E. Unless he called the paps, that wasn’t him putting his relationship with her out there–whatever it may be.

It would drive me crazy to read stuff like that–especially the stuff about his looks. The only time I mention a person’s looks is if they’re looking exceptionally good OR if they’ve done something to their face. I didn’t think BC was good looking at all until I watched Sherlock and heard that voice—but I wasn’t on here calling him ugly or a reptile.

But I know that if I was famous, it would be so hard for me not to read about myself, even if I didn’t read gossip. And it can suck you in hard. And that’s not even counting if your friends/family read it and tell you about it–which I would have a hard time not doing either….

      • Leah says:

I don’t know how he could have missed that article. If he didn’t read it, his friends did, and I’m sure they said something… how could you not, if only to say what utter crap it is.

        That article was awful. 🙁

  23. LilyRose says:

Ironically, I find his concern over the term Cumberbitch paternalistic.

    • Green Girl says:

This is how I feel about it, too. Like, he knows better than his fans how his own fans want to refer to themselves. I can definitely respect that he doesn’t like the word “bitch,” but since he swears like a wounded pirate, he doesn’t have much of a leg to stand on.

      • Janey says:

Yeah, I just want one interviewer to ask him in what way the term Cumberbitch is setting feminism back. How is that more damaging to feminism than the privileged man saying the name should change because it makes him uncomfortable?

  24. Looney says:

Can I just say that this interview was kinda …..epic.

  25. Vera says:

    Cumbercollective! Love it.

  26. John says:

Zzzzzzzzzzzzz. He’s puffy and boring, his spiritual beliefs are irrelevant.
Boring, bad actor with extreme features, nothing more.
Glad Kaiser’s all wet for him, as she is Brangelina, but most are not: beady eyes, puffy face, boring countenance, moderate-at-best talent. Nothing special.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

      “Puffy”?

I hope that you’re really a guy. We need more guy commenters around here–for diversity and to provide jealous snarking on posts about average-looking male actors.

    • EscapedConvent says:

I am puzzled as to how one can be “puffy” whilst having cheekbones that could cut glass.

I recommend “thesaurus.com” very highly, John.

  27. blended says:

i don’t think he reads everything about him. if he did he would be far more upset about his appearance. in fact he seems very comfortable in his skin. this interview was after the terrible daily mail write-up. i’m sure that would have upset him deeply. this was also around the time of the pap disruption on setlock. no doubt he was in a bad mood.

but i have to say i cannot fathom the irrational hate for him, based only on his unconventional looks (which i find divine personally). for example lainey, who always claims to be a ‘smart’ gossip is so full of vitriol for him, i no longer trust her opinion on anything.

    • Marge says:

I actually think he does read about the remarks about his appearance more than what we think he does. I think that is why he mentions his looks from time to time in interviews. I think he has accepted the fact like we all do, that we can’t help the way we are born to look. The quote that keeps coming up about him knowing that he has lost parts to better looking men is very telling.

      • blended says:

what does losing parts have to do with googling oneself?
of course he must hear about what people say online but that doesn’t mean he stays home at night reading blogs and comment sections.

  28. Miss Melissa says:

As usual, I find him fascinating.

I don’t know what it is, but his interviews are always supremely interesting to me.

I don’t get the vitriol either, and agree it is out there in spades.

Like him a lot. Hope he marries a non-celeb and has some semblance of a normal home life one day.

I think his career will take care of itself. He is the real deal.

  29. Diana says:

@John what crawled up your ass? Little angry much? Sounds like you are having a bitch fit for a man. That is if you really are a man.

  30. Prim & Proper says:

He has one of the greatest speaking voices I have every heard – no harsh edges, low tone with that wonderful authoritative delivery, smooth like velvet, superb.

    • EscapedConvent says:

To my ears, it’s the most beautiful voice since Richard Burton.

    • Sachi says:

      It’s sexy as hell.

That creepy scene in Atonement with him telling Lola to bite the chocolate was so intense. His voice is so smooth combined with piercing blue eyes. Ever since that movie, I’ve paid attention to him and his activities.

  31. Alyse says:

This interview took place when he was still filming Sherlock. Interesting. The whole car jacking thing sounded scary. I myself have gone through something similar.

  32. Alyse says:

Also the timing of when this interview seemed to have taken place was AFTER the whole fiasco with the model, The Daily Mails creepy article on him & the whole Egypt thing. Really explains the defense wall he is putting up.

  33. gg says:

Buddhist and hates vitriol? New fan here. Love you, Cumby, even though you might look like a martian.

  34. Angel May says:

Just read this… the THR interviewer was a total douche.

  35. Sandra says:

Idk why anyone would be surprised that he knows about certain things said on the internet about him. While I don’t believe he spends alot of time on the Internet, this is not the first time he has said things that were hinted at the internet. This goes wayyyyy back.

  36. allheavens says:

I don’t get all the vitriol people reserve for Cumberbatch. He seems like a decent enough fellow; by all accounts he treats his fans well, loves the hell out of his parents, is loyal to his friends and hasn’t been a major douchebag to women.

What I find fascinating is how people expect so much more from celebrities than they expect from themselves.

Yes, they do live privileged, insular lives once they reach a certain pinnacle. But try living your life in a fishbowl with your every word measured and all behavior examined to make sure it passes the purity test.

I can understand why some celebrities become morose and guarded. If I had to read or hear about the truly hateful things people say (and the anonymity of the Internet only exacerbates this) I’d be pissed 365/24/7.

    • Katie says:

This is just interesting to me in an online culture way. I dug around him and all he’s got over 100+ interviews is a handful of flubs.

I gather it has to do with bucking convention. He’s simply not attractive enough to warrant a large and diverse women fanbase. And less attractive people usually face heavier fallout than more attractive people over the same mistake.

People often correlate personality and talent with looks and don’t even realize they’re doing it. So, ‘physically unattractive to me’ subconsciously becomes ‘must have ugly personality too’.

Once they’re in that mode, they’ll automatically take everything negatively as it’s a form of objectification. They’re doing the same thing his fans do, but instead of a love object, he becomes a hate object.

      • cel says:

        Two very good observations.

      • allheavens says:

Yes, I am very familiar with the social and psychological phenomenon of attributing beauty with intelligence, talent, cleanliness, hard work etc., etc.

People judge normal let alone unconventional looks harshly, as if genetics should have been changed in the womb and give way too much credit to people who have basically won the genetic pick six.

Beauty does not equate intelligence, talent, or anything else until proof as been provided as far as I am concerned.

It truly bothers me that the Internet has become a tool for venting our personal insecurities and outward loathing of others.

      • icerose says:

I agree. To often people seem to slide i looks, personality and talent into one global opinion. A certain film role can give make an actor appear sexy and attractive despite his not having conventional good looks. Like wise personality is pretty much filtered with in the publicity process and the readers individual perception. But the process itself is fascinating. I have nothing against BC or his fans and can accept that whilst he is not my cup of tea he is still a good actor. Sadly I think the build up of press he is receiving at the moment can lead to Cumberbatch fatigue when even those who like him start to tire from the hyperbole.

    • Lauli says:

      @cel, i agree with you.

      Two very interesting points.

    • Jany says:

Excellent points made here, although I think BC’s quite handsome.I saw him in the flesh and it works, hahaha. But I understand he’s not for everyone and his unusual look might alienate some people.

Also @icerose:Cumberbatch fatigue setting in here, although that might be my own fault. Read too many comments of fans online these last days and oh em gee, it seems like some of his fans are becoming crazier by the minute! CB is quite nice and levelheaded compared to what I read.

  37. Marge says:

I just seen another recent interview with him (days ago from TIFF) and yes to what people have been saying here, he is very very aware about his name on the interwebs. He talked about how he’s seen stuff about people doing stuff with his name( most likely the name generator thing on tumblr) and comments about him smoking. And he has even googled reviews about his most recent movie. I won’t be surprised if he knows about the hair obsession his fans have and how it can get out of control at times.

    • Katie says:

That’s about what I expected. He’s not sitting around on social media websites.

All that stuff made rounds on major news outlets and Twitter (the smoking and name generator both did). That’s what a PR person would run by you so you’re not “What?!” in an interview when asked.

Actors should read their movie reviews, but some can’t take the criticism.

    • Joanie says:

I’d love a link to that article.

    • curlsunited says:

Of course he knows, hair obsession and all. How could he not?

People his/my age usually spend quite some time on the internet on a daily basis, to a large extent for purely professional reasons. He did research on Assange, for instance, and why shouldn‘t he read reviews of his films or online versions of British newspapers (not necessarily the tabloids)? And while he‘s not on Twitter (what a relief) or Facebook (at least not officially) himself he might be following some of his friends‘ accounts. He certainly is bright enough to stay off the more insane/venomous sites and enjoy some of the others. Come on, despite the perpetual OMG-ing MOST of them are harmless, funny, creative, highly entertaining – and very flattering.

Besides: How can one not be obsessed with his hair (read up on what he said about it when he was cast as Khan)? It is gooooooorgeous 🙂

  38. Toffy says:

Seems to me the interviewer went into this interview trying to stir up some sh!t. This obviously was that crazy day with the Egypt sign with the paps and BC wasn’t having it that day. This had to have also been around the time of the Daily Fails hideous article. He is clearly taking jabs at them in here.

I wonder why the interviewer didn’t give us the entire interview. What happened at the beginning? I wonder.

  39. Tish says:

The one thing I believe about him is that he really had this admiration to Christopher Tietjens. All the dignity and integrity and shit. Yeah, I think he lives by that. So I don’t believe he’s running around with blondes and redheads to bang. He may have one woman at the moment he wants to keep secret but woman-hoping. I don’t believe it.

And what McQueen said about him, yeah I believe that too. The guy’s no bullsh!ter.

  40. Ravensdaughter says:

    OMG-he’s a Buddhist-so am I! Must Buddha-stalk him-I’ll join his sangha!
