Emma Thompson shades actors who think they are ‘above’ promoting their work

Just know that I almost made this into a “Who would you rather?” post between Pierce Brosnan and Emma Thompson. But the truth is, I would totally bang Emma. Emma is one of my favorite people in the world. Emma and Pierce were at TIFF to promote their new film, The Love Punch. I don’t know much about the movie other than they play “a divorced couple undertaking a crime caper to right financial wrongs done to them in their retirement fund.” Sounds entertaining. Am I the only one who kind of wishes Emma would do more costume dramas? She’s really great in costume dramas. Sigh. LOVE HER. Anyway, Emma was in full movie-shilling mode at TIFF, because she believes that actors should always promote the hell out of their movies. She explained her reasoning to The Telegraph:

Actress Emma Thompson has given a younger generation a masterclass in selling their films, as she claims some of the new generation are “a bit snobby” about putting in the hard work of publicity. Thompson, who appeared at the premiere of The Love Punch at the Toronto Film Festival last night, said she believed actors ought to “bang the drum” for their own films and encourage audiences to pay to see them.

Saying some younger actors nowadays felt they are “above this”, she went on to give a masterclass in larking about for the camera. Posing happily with fans, the 54-year-old actress adopted a range of outlandish poses as she signed autographs and gave interviews. At one point, she was photographed swigging from what appeared to be a Grey Goose vodka bottle along with co-star Piers Brosnan. The good-natured actress went on to dance her way down the red carpet before appearing at a press conference to share the secret of her success.

When asked why she felt so comfortable in front of the camera, Thompson told an audience she believed the relationship between actors and the press was “important”. Saying she believed some young actors are “a bit snobby about doing press” and thought they were “above it”, she advocated her peers to publicly get behind their own films.

She added she would always tell young actors to imagine their Hollywood blockbuster was their first performance at the Edinburgh festival.

“You go up the Royal Mile with a drum and you bang that drum and you say, ‘I’m in this show,” she said. “It’s really good, come and see it.’ That’s what you do. And if you don’t do that, no one will come and see your show because there are a million shows and there are a lot of people who are better than you. So you better get out on that street with that drum.”

She added: “Explain why you love your show. Say why you think it’s good. Be behind it . . . And if you can’t be behind it,. don’t do work you don’t believe in. This is a job. Make it fun. Make it fun for other people, make it fun for yourself.” She added she felt “passionate” and “very strongly” about the issue.

[From The Telegraph]

She SO right. I get so tired of reading celebrity interviews where actors just seem so grumpy promoting their work. Granted, we the public now expect actors to give more of their private lives away to promote their movies, but there IS a way to balance the personal issues with the movie promotion. Look at Channing Tatum, for the love of God. Emma also told the Toronto Sun that she loved her movie because it had a happy ending:

“It was so much fun… I’m fascinated by the fact that, at the moment, we don’t seem to make films that are designed to make us happy from the beginning to the end,” Thompson said.

She cited the TIFF line-up, with “lots of very, very dark films,” as an example of the trend. “We always have to go on some journey or other,” Thompson continued. “In the ‘olden days’ we didn’t have to do that. Sometimes actors were required to entertain and make people happy for the sake of that. And it’s something that we’ve slightly lost.”

Thompson feels slightly guilty that she got paid to co-star with her friend Brosnan in The Love Punch, which was filmed entirely in France. “It was the best summer ever for us,” Thompson enthused.

The locations included Coye-la-Foret in Oise north of Paris. Coincidentally, part of the 1957 Hollywood movie Funny Face, starring Audrey Hepburn, was also filmed in Oise. In another coincidence, [director] Hopkins happened to compare Thompson’s charming comedy chops to that of the late but legendary Hepburn. That, in turn led to a Thompson quips: “I could probably fit her inside one of my bra cups,” she said of the waif-like Hepburn.

One thing Hepburn always needed was on-screen chemistry with co-stars. For Thompson in The Love Punch, that chemistry was instant with Brosnan. It helps, of course, that he had been eager for years to work with her.

“I absolutely adore Emma,” Brosnan said Thursday. “She makes me feel happy and she makes me feel like a great actor in her presence. She is so generous as a woman, as an actor, and she just bedazzles!”

Do not, however, mention the word “retirement” to either actor in real life. On Thursday — with The Love Punch amusing audiences at TIFF — Thompson and Brosnan told a festival press conference that neither has plans for an end to acting — ever.

“Retirement?” Thompson said. “I can’t afford to retire. It’s like asking a painter to stop painting. Why would you? So I would never dream of retiring. Look at Judi Dench. Judi is so brilliant and keeps working and she’s blind, actually. She’s extraordinary. She wouldn’t dreaming of retiring. It’s not in our genes.”

Brosnan, now 60 and almost a decade past playing James Bond, confirmed that has no plans to give up his career, either.

“I never think about it myself. What would I do? I’ve been an actor so many years and, God willing, I’ll continue to be an actor for years to come.”

That does not mean that things will always stay the same, however. Especially for Thompson, who threw the media a curve ball. While she usually plays sympathetic characters, that needs to stop, she said.

“I’d like to play a really bad person. Really evil! And I’d like to be in an action movie one day. You know, get really ripped and (put on) some tattoos. I’m not kidding, actually. I really would like to do that. Possibly, it’s a mid-life crisis. I don’t know.”

[From Toronto Sun]

God, I love them both. But does anyone else think that they wasted money making this movie when really they just should have made a documentary about Emma and Pierce hanging out in France for a summer? I would watch that.

Ugh, I just love the honesty of this. This is why she has a career that spans three decades – I feel like this kind of attitude what a lot of the younger actors and actresses lack today. We’ve got too many philosophical, high and mighty “artists” in Hollywood.

    • whatsyourname says:

Yes. Attitude, confidence and workethic and always being willing to GIVE something of yourself. that takes you a long way in any bussiness! They whine and complain about “it’s hard to get old in HW” etc and I bet it IS, but still I believe a lot of those who says so are also lazy and think to highly of themselves and that hey are to good to get in there and fight for it very day! Even if you got it, you still got to KEEP it! Nothing is free,

    • Anonny says:

“And if you can’t be behind it,. don’t do work you don’t believe in.”

There’s the truth of it all, right there in that one sentence.

(Love the trouser pic. The dress…ehh, not so much.)

      • Lucinda says:

Also, if you are behind your work and talking it up like crazy, there will be less room for talking up your personal life because it will become clear that your real passion, what you REALLY are excited to talk about, is your work.

    • Liv says:

Someone should go and tell Rooney Mara. And Bruce Willis. And Rhys Ifans.

    • Meredith says:

This is why I love British actors. They never retire (Judi Dench, Angela Lansbury, Julie Andrews). They are “professional entertainers” with the emphasis on both words. They put many young American actors to shame.

    • Kim says:

Love her!! Not only is she a stellar actress she is a class act to boot. Alot of celebs should listen to her advice & be grateful for their careers instead of being such entitled brats.

  2. Esti says:

I love her so much. And Pierce Brosnan, who I’ve always had mildly positive feelings towards, moves way up in my book now that I know he adores her too.

    • Bijlee says:

Pierce Bronson is an very sweet man. He will always be the best bond for me. I mean the new bond movies are blah blah good and all, but Brosnan will always hold a special place in my heart that old curmudgeon Craig can never steal.

      • jane16 says:

Me too. My favorite Bond. Also, have met him and he is soooo nice. He’s been a favorite of mine since he was on that tv show in the 80s. I love Emma also. Can’t wait to see this.

      • Flower says:

Me three, charming, witty, sexy, sophisticated and tough when needed, Graig’s Bond is a thug in comparison.

  3. sjs says:

She is amazing. What she says about promoting your work totally applies to my industry too (music).

    • The Wizz says:

It applies to all the business owners i work with too!

    • Just Me says:

Mine 3 (artist)!! I was just about to copy her quote about banging on that drum and share it with a group or my peers. Sooo true! The market is saturated with people who are chomping at the bit to take your place. Bang that drum! Bang, bang, bang!!

  4. brin says:

YES!!!! Love them both, I would watch them just looking at each other for two hours!!

  5. smee says:

She is a consummate actor, so I’m not surprised that she thinks this. And she’s right.

If she has a stylist, she needs to get rid. If she doesn’t, she needs to find one STAT. That hair is just too white blonde, those pants are unforgivable and both pairs of shoes are hideous. She’s an attractive woman, but she is not maximizing her assets by looking like this.

    • Tiffany says:

Being in the latest trend and wearing to hottest designer has never been her bag and that’s alright because she more than makes up for it by being kind of awesome.

    • Sassy says:

I think she looks better than ever. Could she be transitioning into her own gray hair? I love the bouncy short do!

    • raincoaster says:

Oh, but this is SO much better than she usually does. She tends to show up in outfits that would make Gaultier do a double take, when left to her own devices.

  6. EscapedConvent says:

Two very lovely people. Wow, does Emma look gorgeous in that color! It makes her light up.

    I want that coral dress!

    • Anna says:

I did NOT recognize her. I thought Kaiser had lost her mind and used someone else’s photo. She doesnt look like she’s had any work done, so I guess it’s the drastic hair and makeup change.

      • Florc says:

I’ve been staring at her pic too. She looks off… Maybe it is just the hair.

This movie reminds me of Dick and Jane. Kinda look like the remake’s leads too…

    • Eileen says:

She looks absolutely fantastic! She’s such a happy positive person-it literally illuminates out of her.

  7. blue marie says:

she looks great, she is one of my all time favorites actresses. I get sucked into Sense and Sensibility every time it’s on TV.

And I have a soft spot for Brosnan, my mom has loved him for as long as I can remember.

    • brin says:

Me too, and she’s married to Willoughby!!

    • Anna says:

Brosnan is my Forever Dong. I am so glad he and Emma are still both working.

And I just want to give her such major props for putting all those Actors who dont want to Shill their Craft in their place. The smartest thing anyone’s said about that Job.

  8. aims says:

I adore Emma. She’s smart, funny and beautiful. The whole package. Young Hollywood should take notes. She is in the same class as Meryl and I just love her to bits!!

  9. TG says:

I love her bit from reading this article and the pics to go along with it I think she was drunk. My favorite movie of hers along with Dustin Hoffman is Last Chance Harvey. I am either laughing or crying throughout the movie.

  10. Jessiebes says:

    Absolutely love her.

    Professor Trewlaney rules!

  11. j.eyre says:

Well, since you almost asked, although I adore Emma and she looks amazing here, there is no contest – I would and have wanted to hit Brosnan since Remmington Steele.

I like this interview and I agree with what she is saying. I understand press may be tiring but to be “above it” is silly. That is part of their job.

And I love your point about shucking the film and just doing a documentary on the two of them in France.

    • bbb1975 says:

Remington Steele! I was trying so hard to remember the name of that show. You saved me from going to IMDB

      • j.eyre says:

I try to make lives easier…

      • Bird says:

I used to watch Remington Steele with my mom growing up and even had a poster in my room in elementary school. I’m now married to a guy that looks quite Brosnan-esque. If only he were wealthy and had a British accent, too!

    • Anna says:

Sitting in the office 10-hrs a day is tiring. Working an assembly line is tiring. That’s why it’s called a job. And if those Artists didnt do this part of their job – promoting the Art that someone already invested millions into to create, and someone else is gonna have to go shell out $20 to see – instead of rich celebrities they’d be starving unknowns entertaining single-digit crowds in some dingy basement in East Village.

Ugh, this issue is a sore subject for me for some reason.

      • j.eyre says:

Anna – I have been trying to find a thread to talk you so I hope you check back here. How are you feeling? Has the Plague subsided?

You need to know I quote you almost every morning so I hope you get a warm spot when that happens. Every time Mr. Rochester sings “What Does a Fox Say?” I quote your comment of “Aaaaaahhhhh – am I already high? What is that?” You just made me (and others) howl with that comment.

        Bissous, darling.

      • Anna says:

Oh darling, you are simply precious! I am so flattered and feel so loved 🙂 But hold the bissous for a little while longer – the plague seems to have incubated, but hasnt quite left the building (I have been on lockdown since Monday night and going CRAZY).

Luckily, Asgardian genes seem to be plague-resistant. CHarming has been wonderfully patient and a total doll. He’s even been using Pegasus (dont ask me how he got his hands on that pony) to bring me some rather vile but effective concoctions courtesy of Friga.

      • j.eyre says:

Oh, I am sorry you are still down for the count. This is not some clever ruse to keep CHemboy locked away for a little longer, is it? Keep him healthy – he has a slew of tv appearances next week: Ellen, Tonight Show, Fallon… wait – all those shows film in… LA. Well, whoever will look after him while he’s in LA???

Seriously, I do hope you are up and about soon. Bissous withheld until such a time as they are not contagious.

    • mia girl says:

Remington Steele was my favorite!!! God I loved him in that. Major crush.

Love Emma so much. She elevates everything she’s a part of.

  12. Frida_K says:

I love her pink dress and the black shoes!

She has such a great attitude.

And he is so debonair. Age becomes him.

This was a joy to read.

    Good morning, one and all!

    🙂

  13. Sparkly says:

Wow, they look really great together. Looks like they have great chemistry. I want to watch it now, even though the blurb didn’t particularly move me. Mission accomplished, Emma.

  14. Maria says:

I love her and agree completely.

  15. GiGi says:

Love them both and love this sentiment. And maybe if actors gave really interesting interviews about their projects, set life, getting into character, etc. then there’d be a bit (a tiny bit) less focus on their sex life during proper interviews.

I know I care a lot more about the actor as a person and performer than I do about who they go home to.

  16. Liberty says:

    She is so wonderful.

And she used to date Hugh Laurie!

And works hard for real for ActionAid!

Such a nice thing to read this morning.

  17. Maritza says:

To me Emma Thompson is the Meryll Streep of England. She is that good.

  18. bammer says:

I love her too. So refreshing. I’m so tired of this too cool for school ungrateful attitude so many people have.

  19. Anna Scott says:

Wow! She looks great. I love the dress. The color is just perfect. The necklace too.

  20. Dawn says:

Wow-Pierce has really aged well. Most men in real life do not look this good at 60. Well both have aged well actually! And I agree I would love to see Emma do more period dramas.

  21. The Original G says:

    Cough (Kristen Stewert))

    • Another Ann says:

Honestly, I don’t think this really applies to Kristen Stewart. She has always done promo, even went to TIFF last year shortly after the mini cooper debacle. She might not be the most eloquent speaking about it, but she has always done promo for her films.

To me, this applies more to the people who don’t show, or avoid tv appearances and interviews. Remember Leo skipping out on Gatsby after Cannes so he could lounge on a boat? I remember Alex Pettyfer bagging out on some Magic Mike promo too.

      • StaCat1 says:

I think it applies to a number of people- people who don’t show up and those that do show up but seem to behave as if they wish they were somwhere else.

As Emma says- if you don’t believe it and get behind then you should NOT have done it.

    • Emily C. says:

I can’t remember Kristen Stewart ever skipping on promotion, and she defended Twilight when asked about it. Robert Pattinson, on the other hand, dissed the source material constantly. The source material deserves to be dissed, but it made him a wealthy star, so he was biting the hand that fed him.

      • Green Girl says:

I remember what R-Patz said on some talk show for the last (second to last?) Twilight film. He was talking about some scene, and he starts laughing at it.

On the one hand, I agree with him. But on the other, I thought it was a really rude thing to say, esp. since he has never seemed to have any problem cashing checks from making the movie. I also felt a bit sorry for the fans. It’s obviously a special movie for many of them, so it must be stinky if the film’s top star is making fun of it.

  22. TheyPromisedMeBeer says:

I know she is married, but I’m totally shipping Emma/Pierce now. I’d watch a documentary about those two hanging out in France over just about anything released this past year.

  23. betsy says:

I like Pierce’s relaxed attitude to getting older. No tucks. He looks good on it.

  24. Harryg says:

I will go see this! A great “couple.”

  25. MavenTheFirst says:

The problem is that most *Hollywood* actors, IMO, are either inarticulate or illiterate or shy. She is spot on in talking about promoting a film. Unfortunately, I imagine said snobbishness largely serves as a disguise for inadequacies, perceived or otherwise.

Emma, on the other hand, has none of these fears and needs none of these tricks.

BTW I loved Pierce with Julianne Moore, so am looking forward to this pairing. On a shallow note, when is she going to lose the unflattering blonde colour?

  26. Lucy says:

Amazing woman, great attitude!!! Not that she’s the only one, but I wish more actors were like this.

  27. Ginger says:

Ah Emma! Another great example of a stunning woman aging gracefully. Love them both! Dang! Pierce looks fantastic in that suit!

  28. Alexandra says:

God – I think they both look so fantastic – and genuinely happy and kind — hope the movie does well!

  29. I Choose Me says:

Yet more reasons to love her. I get that promotion can be exhausting esp., when you get asked the same inane questions again and again but it’s part of the job and kudos to her for making the most of it, making it fun and giving it her all.

  30. Amanda says:

No, no, no, no to the hair/makeup/outfit. She looks like she should be here in the American South, drinking mimosas in a country club

  31. Lia says:

I wish she would do the movie version of “Death Comes to Pemberley”, the sequel to “Pride and Prejudice”. I would buy my ticket the moment I heard it was in production!

  32. Emily C. says:

This sounds like a movie I’d actually like to see. That’s a very rare thing. Both Emma Thompson and Pierce Brosnan are actually legitimately good people as well as being good actors. Emma’s better at acting than Pierce, but one of her strengths is lifting other actors to a higher level than they might otherwise be capable of.

I especially love that she says, “And if you can’t be behind it, don’t do work you don’t believe in.” Yes. So much less crap, especially sexist, racist crap, would be made if people in Hollywood followed this advice.

  33. The Original Mia says:

Love her. Love him. Win-win situation for me.

  34. Bea says:

OMG how I love PB. Even moreso that he is so in love with his wife just as she is despite all of the nasty rags and hags who harp on her weight.

    Emma is dishy.

  35. Thiajoka says:

I know this is a celeb gossip site and that bringing the drama probably generates traffic, but it’s been nice today to read two stories that aren’t about a Kardashian, Courtney Stodden, or some starlet or hunk flash-in-the-pan whose name we won’t remember in three years. Love this story and the one about Sara Gilbert.

  36. Violet says:

Love them both, would totally watch a documentary of them just hanging out in France 🙂

  37. MAC says:

I like both pairs of the shoes she is wearing in the different photos.

  38. Meg says:

I fear emma’s generation’s way of thinking will die off with them. you can maintain your integrity while letting people know your film is coming out. you don’t have to answer questions you don’t want to ask. johnny depp does this, just be easy going-we all have things in our lives that are obligations, things we don’t want to do, but that’s part of life. take the good with the bad.

    • StaCat1 says:

That is sad but I feel you may be right Meg.

I feel like many kids today – actors and beyond- have more entitlement and less work ethic.
Of course there are exceptions..but work ethic and NOT whining about doing your job do seem on the downtrend. Sad.

  39. StaCat1 says:

LOVE her to bits. She Cate, Meryl- REAL actresses who do the job (and do it VERY well) and don’t whine and moan about things.

She is TOTALLY spot on. The younger generation needs to take a note from her, Pierce and others about appreciation and work ethic.

  40. TQB says:

I love her. As I have mentioned before, I met her once, in London, and despite the fact that I accosted her (with as much restraint as I possibly could muster) at a theatre whilst she was talking with her friends and gushed all over her like the nerdy American drama student that I was, she was absolutely delightful. After I floated away, my friend overheard her say to her companions, “aren’t people WONDERFUL?”

She will always be the best. But I’d also bang pierce, now and forever.

    • Claudia says:

Aw 🙂 That’s a cute story. It’s so nice to hear that she really is as kind and gracious as she seems.

  41. MaraFan says:

Rob Pattinson. Same goes for actors who think they’re above their work, so they s*** talk it and put it down.

    • Another Ann says:

This doesn’t apply to Pattinson at all. He showed up to do Cosmopolis promotion right after the whole Stewart Sanders scandal last year, when a lot of other actors would have bagged out of it. He’s always done extensive promotion for all his films, and has been known to spend an hour just signing for fans at the event.

  42. Claudia says:

It would be great if Emma could be in movies with actors who think they’re above promoting their work (Bruce Willis, Rooney Mara, etc.)… so that they can be hit with reality: that they’re whiny, ungrateful, and ungracious. That they are incredibly blessed to never have to worry and stress about being able to afford car repairs, health care, house payment, emergency surgery and care for their ailing pet, etc.

At the same time, I like Emma too much to wish to burden her with those assholes.

  43. NC Mom says:

Hello Kristin Stewart!!! She is talking about you girl 🙂

    • chichay says:

Kristen Stewart might be the most awkward girl out there, but she never skipped on her promo and always on time when it comes to her junket interview. Just saying.

  44. Dirty Martini says:

Daaammmmnnnnn…. that is one fine man.

  45. Kate says:

On the other hand, I have never gone to see a movie because of a premiere, or an interview, or a celebrity pimping out their personal life. At best it has no impact, at worst it turns me right off the film. I don’t know anyone who decides to see a film after seeing pictures of the stars at a film festival or after reading a profile in Vanity Fair.

Trailers, critical reviews, respect for cast members and the director’s past work and word of mouth are what get’s me to a screening. The majority of promotion these days is just about making the actor into a celebrity first and foremost, and I do tend to respect those actors that bow out of 90% of it. Not those who do a Bruce Willis (doing the promotion but being an ass about it) or a Leo (not showing up), but those who just won’t sign a contract that demands they do the whole dog and pony show.

    • TG says:

I agree with you 100% but the more interviews and what not they do to promote the movie the more likely you are to become aware of the movie. I also agree that I am more interests In interviews or write ups about the movie and don’t really care about their personal life when deciding to see a film.

    • Abby says:

I watched White House Down and Magic Mike specifically because of how hard Channing Tatum worked to promote them. I haven’t seen all his movies (stop loss anyone?) but he worked so damn hard to promote these two, I felt like I owed it to him. 🙂

  46. raincoaster says:

I met a man who’d seen King Lear on the stage in London, with Kenneth Branagh as Edmund and Emma Thompson as the Fool. Can. You. IMAGINE? It must have been incredible.

    • Nat says:

It was! Their Renaissance Theatre Company came to Toronto way back in 1990 (can’t remember exactly when). They did King Lear and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Wow! Pure theatre magic!

  47. Sonia says:

Am I the only attracted to her necklace?
Looks so unique, almost want to guess if Emma made it herself?

  48. MademoiselleRose says:

I was always so pleased she scooped up Willoughby. She got the hot guy! She’s fun, she obviously loves life, loves her work, and she’s very good at it. She ran circles around everyone in Sense and Sensibility (and she wrote it), she made me laugh in Harry Potter, she made me cry in Love Actually. She’s just bloody brilliant.

  49. taxi says:

Emma & Pierce are terrific, separately & together. She looks very good here, with a sassy ‘do & wearing a flattering color.

Of course she’ll never retire! Her mother hasn’t.

  50. Jayna says:

Amazing interview. A refreshing interview. It makes me roll my eyes at Bruce Willis even more.

  51. Abby says:

Gawd they both are so gorgeous in these photos.

  52. Grant says:

Holy shit, Emma looks great! I even love those stupid shoes–but I especially love her haircut!
