Jake Gyllenhaal takes gay rumors as a ‘compliment’, is turned on by ‘t-ts & ass’

Back in the day, I used to watch a lot of Bravo. They used to do marathons on Inside the Actors Studio and the did some really great Independent Lens-type documentaries. Nowadays, Bravo is where bad weaves go to die and where Andy Cohen has created some kind of empire out of those dead, dead weaves. What I’m trying to say is that I can’t even remember the last time I watched an episode of Inside the Actors Studio, but it’s been years. Instead of showing ITAS in reruns, they just do Real Housewives marathons and who really gives a crap about that? So, Jake Gyllenhaal is going to have an Actors Studio episode in the new season, and Bravo has sent out some teaser quotes – Jake on Heath Ledger, and Jake on the gay rumors.

“Heath and I knew each other for years before that because we had both auditioned for Moulin Rouge together,” Gyllenhaal says. After experiencing Ledger’s brash, loose sense of humor in person, “I remember thinking, ‘I like this guy.’ He’s just like, super lovable,” Gyllenhaal recalls. He later admits Ledger’s death hit him extremely hard: “It felt like losing a family member, and it still does to this day.”

Gyllenhaal also addresses the gay rumors that came following Brokeback, but he says he wasn’t rattled. (That portion of the interview will be featured in the full episode.) In fact, “It’s a huge compliment,” he says. And as for what turns him on, Jake says his tastes are simple: “Tits and ass.”

[From Bravo]

“It’s a huge compliment.” Eh? I mean, I get that “being flattered” and “taking it as a compliment” is the new go-to answer to the “gay rumors” question, but it feels too cute by half in Jake’s case. Especially since he “butched it up” with the “t-ts and ass” answer. Do you think Jake likes boobs? I have no idea at this point. My only explanation for what Jake does to my gaydar is that he might be bisexual? I think that’s a solid possibility. It could be that he’s genuinely turned on by t-ts, ass AND dong.

“Tits and ass?” -?!?! I’m surprised he didn’t belch and grab his crotch while saying it.

    • Mindy says:

Lol. We havent seen the tape though. That little speech probably does end with him spitting his chewing tobacco into his coffee cup.

    • Sixer says:

It’s an all-time top ten celebrity quote, so it is.

    • GoodNamesAllTaken says:

Really. Talk about protesting too much.

    • Ruddy says:

Bbbbbut he said “tits and ass” so he must be straight!! Only a lying homosexual would respond to that question with a respectful “I like women”. Test passed, Toothy Tile………I mean Jake Gyllenhaal

  2. Anna says:

The girls he dates have none of those things

  3. blue marie says:

try as I might, I just don’t see him as sexual

  4. neelyo says:

Is ‘I take it as a compliment’ the new ‘Not that there’s anything wrong with it’?

And lay off the pancake, honey!

  5. ncboudicca says:

Never knowing how much truth is in blind items, I still can’t shake the “Toothy Tile” thoughts when I look at him.

    • nico says:

I have a question about those Awful Truth blind items. How many of you really believe Ted Casablanca is a reliable source?

He seems to be as full of it as most gossip writers. His BI’s seemed more like fanfiction.

      • hannah says:

If you believe in Toothy Tile you also have to believe that Jake’s hiding a first grader somewhere

      • mercy says:

There was no truth, just awful fiction writing. Same with blind item blogs.

      • La dee da says:

Ted is the real deal. I don’t have any info on Toothy Tile specifically but I know info that confirms several of his other unrevealed blind vices to the letter. Toothy Tile is either (1) Jake, in which case the dude is a complete fraud or (2) someone else altogether.

  6. epiphany says:

If you need to announce you’re turned on by t*ts and *ss, you’re probably not turned on by t*ts and *ss.#STILLTHINKHESTOOTHYTILE

  7. Mia 4S says:

I hope the “huge compliment” thing relates in some way to his Brokeback Mountain performance? Otherwise…wow what a ridiculous quote. Patronizing in a way. Whatever his orientation may be, I don’t know, I’ve enjoyed several of his performances but I just can’t muster any strong feelings on him.

    • bambilee23 says:

That’s what I’m thinking, too. He thinks people think he’s gay because he was a convincing actor in Brokeback Mountain, and the “compliment” speaks to his acting ability, not his sexuality.

      • mercy says:

Yes, and yes. And if he wanted to make a statement by answering that way, that’s good, too.

And I bet the “t&a” cokment was a jokey response to the previous question, even if it might be true. 😉 But I am getting the impression that Jake is rather dull and a bad interview.

      • kaizee says:

Watch his interview on The Daily Show from Tuesday night. Fantastic and funny interview, Jake is always great on tv. I think the excerpt of “tits and ass” probably was tongue in cheek, he tends to say stuff offhand and laugh it off. All comes across quite differently when you see him say it rather than read it.

  8. Oops says:

Oh, so for Jake it’s a compliment and for JGL it’s tacky to answer…..

    • starrywonder says:

I liked JLG response to that question besides Jake’s frankly. I feel like Jake is/was being disingenuous. Just saying what everyone else says when asked and did not give a thoughtful reply.

  9. bns says:

What a strange thing to say on Inside the Actor’s Studio.

    • jaye says:

They say all KINDS of things on IAS. James Lipton sometimes asks his guests what their favorite curse word is. It’s not as extremely highbrow as it seems.

  10. Easi says:

I think coming out would only help him at this point. His career is kind of stalled. I kind of thought he might be bi. I feel like his relationship with dunst was real. Would a former beard have a say about coming out or not?

  11. Allie says:

I’ve felt weird about him since he dated T Swift.

  12. shump says:

I swear his features just keep growing, but his head stays the same size. Maybe it’s just the beard (haha, ‘beard’), but I swear it looks like his nose and lips are about to outgrow his head…

  13. lovegossip says:

So if a gay person is asked if they are straight would it acceptable to say they take that as a compliment? That just seems like an odd answer. Wjy not say none of your business or yes or no? Just odd to me…

  14. Sonya says:

If he’s turned on by tits and ass, how the hell did he end up dating Natalie Portman?

  15. OhDear says:

I guess I have to read or hear the comment in context, but it’s the same “Oh no, I love gay people! But I sure as hell am not gay! Not gay at all!” answer.

  16. ZigZagZoey says:

OMG! I cannot stand this idiot! He takes himself so f’ing seriously. Get over yourself! He is in worse denial that John Travolta refusing to stop with the Sharpie…
STOP with the stupid philosophical CRAP and the stupid puppy dog faces.
Why don’t you ask yourself why you are so full of sh*t?
Seriously with the “t*ts and ass”? Practicing your acting skills when you say that? It sounds so ridiculous coming from you since you are always striving for truth and complexity.
    I am so sick of annoying celebs….Yet I come here…I know….

  17. Easi says:

Is this a sign that he’s never coming out? He can’t now, right?

    • Rosie says:

Ofcourse he can still come out. All is forgiven when you come out. Google Wentworth Millers response from afew years ago, if it hasnt been burried with all the positive press, that is. You can always come out.

      • epiphany says:

Wentworth Miller stated emphatically and unambiguously in an interview a few years ago that he was straight. Ted Casablanca then made it his mission to hint at every occasion that Miller was really gay – which of course we now know he is.

      • Easi says:

Jakey is a little more high profile then wentworth. If he came out it would damage his beards’ reps more I think. He still wants to be a leading man…. Idk, I’m thinking he’s in the closet for the long haul. Sad …unless he’s not gay/bi. But who thinks that?

      • Izzy says:

@epiphany, slightly OT for this story, but relevant to your comment – somewhere on the ‘net is a fabulous sociology or anthropology article about Casablanca, Toothy Tile and using BI’s to out celebrities. It’s an interesting read…

    • La dee da says:

The standard way to come out after bearding is to first say you are bisexual, and the beards can then fall back on “I didn’t know” with no damage to their integrity. Wentworth Miller came out as gay, though despite his public assertions that he was straight in the past he had not actively bearded with high profile celebs. Therefore, he didn’t need to first come out as bisexual.

  18. Londongal says:

I once heard tell a wicked observational anecdote from a friend that worked on one of his films, he was only ever apparently interested in chatting to/hanging out with attractive male crew members and that he was also (to the point of irritation to most of crew and cast)childlike and very prone to unfunny ‘pranks’. Hmmmmm!

  19. Emily says:

I mean, he got the gay rumors after playing a gay man. So maybe he’s taking it as a compliment that his acting is so convincing people thought he was really gay? That’s how I took it.

    • robert says:

Nice .. Exactly how I took it .. I dont think its a big deal if he is or he isnt .. What does it matter ..?

  20. Ari says:

I find him very asexual for some reason so it never crosses my brain at all what he particularly likes thankfully

  21. mogrill says:

It’s more than 48 hours away, so of course we can’t actually wait to, you know, watch the show in order to see what the answer means.

So much more fun to rip it apart and analyze it ahead of time, with no context and no information.

The T&A line does sound cringe-worthy. But the “compliment” answer is almost certainly related to his performance in Brokeback.

But why let facts interfere with a good takedown.

  22. Feebee says:

I’m going to hold judging the otherwise pretty tacky T&A answer until I see it on TV. Sometimes things don’t translate well to paper. you can’t look at his previous girls as to the accuracy cos tits are tits, they don’t have to be Cs, Ds or ++ to be appreciate-able.

As for the compliment thing, it could be related to Brokeback, or it could just be one of the 3-4 stock answers he has because like Hugh Jackman he’s probably asked or it’s alluded to all the freaking time and it’s just tiresome.

  23. moon says:

I was there at the taping of this particular episode – I’m a huge ITAS fan, and this was one of the better interviews I’ve watched. James Lipton himself said so. I don’t think he’s bisexual, but he came across as a pretty liberal minded person and I think he just wanted to send the message that there’s nothing wrong with being gay – which is why he’s ‘flattered’. The t*** and a** comment was funny, but he had loads of intelligent and honest answers about his films. He really went into detail about his acting process, working with various actors/directors, the industry. And he was gracious to everyone who asked a question, gave well thought and long detailed answers. And, as an acting student – his answers were actually thoughtful and useful.

His mom was there but not his dad or Maggie, and they interviewed his mom. His girlfriend was there too but she wasn’t seated with his mom and they didn’t make any reference to her at all, she doesn’t appear on camera and there was no mention.

  24. mkyarwood says:

Eh, Jake likes boys better I think. Kind of like Bradley Cooper. Not ‘gaaaaaay’, but we’re so obsessed with the label, it seems, and I think they all will try anything. Maybe he likes tits and ass, but he doesn’t like hanging out with tits and ass /shrug. Anyone see that horrendous video of ‘what lesbians think of bisexuals’? Those girls were flooded with hatespeech, calling bisexuals greedy or indecisive. Monosexism. The NEW sexism, now that being gay is ‘okay’. Pfft.

    • I Choose Me says:

Just goes to show that anyone can be prejudiced, even those who typically experience prejudice themselves.

  25. Mr. Stinky FishFace says:

I feel like people are WANTING him to be gay, even though he keeps stating that he’s not. Its strange the way everyone keeps harping on it…

  26. Emily C. says:

Wow, classy. I didn’t give credit to the gay rumors before, but now I’m thinking there might be something to them. Because that answer was very try-hard. Like the kind of thing a guy NOT turned on by women would think a straight guy would say.

  27. LovesGossip says:

But does he have sex with a Wolverine costume on? (the true sign of heterosexuality). I like Jake but his t-ts and ass comment is a bit much.

  28. I Choose Me says:

I’ve been a staunch Jake G defender in the past but these recent quotes get a big side-eye from me.

I mean “tit’s and ass” really?

Careful Jakey that could cover transsexuals too.

  29. A says:

I feel like he’s Bi and you know how much shit bisexuals get so I kind of understand if they don’t want to “come out”.
If he’s with a woman, they’ll say “Anytime now, he’ll be with a man, it’s only a matter of time before he cheats on her cause he misses the D”.
Or, even worse, people will say “No one is perfectly Bi, they always lean towards one sex more than the other so which way does he lean hmm”. Etc.
    It’s not worth it.
People give him shit even now by not believing him. It’s not even a matter of believing or not, it’s that people keep questioning him and others, even after they’ve stated that they’re straight. Why not just accept the answer he’s given? No one would accept this if it was the other way around. “I’m gay” – No you’re straight! *lalalala can’t hear you*

  30. La dee da says:

Fascinating to see the reaction to the “tits & ass” comment ( personally I’m in agreement it’s a bit tacky). this is one of the handful of rehearsed & expected questions Lipton asks of all actors (called the Questionnaire). So Jake Gyllenhaal planned this response to the question “what turns you on?” As he likely expected, it made headlines.

You can see other actors’ answers to this canned question here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J0gPwYvHb00

my favorites are Robin Williams, Robert Downey Jr and Angelina Jolie. They seem refreshingly honest. worth watching in full on Youtube.
