Garrett Hedlund trades in Christian Grey for Angelina Jolie’s whip of doom

Some assorted Angelina Jolie news for you today. First up, the release date for Angelina’s Maleficent – her first starring role since 2010’s The Tourist – has been moved up. It was originally given a July 2, 2014 release date, but now it’s being moved up to May 30, 2014. Memorial Day weekend? That sounds promising.

As for Angelina’s second directorial job, Unbroken, she’s currently in Australia, scouting locations and deep into pre-production. She’s already cast British actor Jack O’Connell in the lead role of Lou Zamperini, and now she’s added Garrett Hedlund to the cast. Hedlund’s last casting mention was the 50 Shades of Grey thing – word was that E.L. James really wanted Garrett but that he really didn’t want to play master spanker Christian Grey. It seems that Garrett would prefer to be at the end of Angelina’s whip!

Garrett Hedlund is set to star alongside Jack O’Connell in Universal’s biopic, “Unbroken.”

Angelina Jolie is helming the film with the Coen brothers doing the latest pass on the script. Earlier drafts were written by William Nicholson and Richard LaGravenese.

Pic is based on the Laura Hillenbrand book “Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption,” that follows the true story of Lou Zamperini who was a Los Angeles high school track star who raced in the 1936 Berlin Olympics. In 1943, his Air Force plane crashed in the Pacific. He survived without food and water for 47 days, enduring shark attacks, aerial attacks and hunger before washing ashore on a Japanese island behind enemy lines, where he was held as a prisoner of war for two years and tortured by his captors.

Hedlund would play the leader of the prisoners at the camp where Zamperini is being held.

Jolie, Matthew Baer, Erwin Stoff and Clayton Townsend will produce. Mick Garris will serve as executive producer. Roger Deakins has also come on as the film’s cinematographer. Universal’s vice president of production Kristin Lowe and creative executive Sara Scott will oversee the project for the studio.

Hedlund has long been interested in the story of Zamperini and wanted to be involved in the project. Sources say the role of Fitzgerald fits him perfectly.

[From Variety]

That’s cool that Garrett has always been interested in the story and that he would have done anything to be involved with the project. You know what else I remember? Gwyneth Paltrow once said that Garrett reminded her of “the very lovely Brad Pitt”. I wonder if Angelina saw that in Garrett too. Garrett’s all about being a proper, serious actor these days too. Hm. Did Angelina Jolie just hire herself a little side-crumpet? No, of course not!! SHE WOULD NEVER (or would she?). Empress Zahara is going to have to keep her eye on this situation.

I like this guy, even though I’m not into the super pretty type. I don’t however like his beard. And that’s strange cause I’m a beard loonie.

  2. LL says:

You forgot he was in Troy with Brad.

    • drea says:

LOL, that’s true! He was cousin Patroclus to Brad’s Achilles, right?

If I remember correctly, he’s part of the Brad appreciation society, so I doubt he’s going to be all over the missus.

  3. L says:

Ahh can’t believe she hired Jack O’Connell . I love love love him! he’s amazing in everything. So excited for this now!

  4. xboxsucks says:

    he is quite charming.

  5. Tessa says:

Garrett is… I can’t even describe it. He’s mercilessly sexy. Country Strong is now a problem for me.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

He’s sexy and he’s making all the right moves, career-wise.

I also love that he dates Dunst (they’re still together right?) who’s an unconventional beauty, and not some VS model. It’s such a turn-on.

  6. Maya says:

This movie just gets better and better and I am even willing to bet that this movie will rule the Oscars 2015 with Angelina being the second woman to get the Oscar for Best director.

As for Maleficient – I still cannot believe we have to wait 8 months or so before seeing that movie. Why not move it to this December?

PS: Stop with starting a rumour about Angelina and the Garrett. Brad and Angelina are very much in love and happy together. People aka Jennifer fans have been praying for this couple to split up but they are still together and will be for a long time. This couple looks genuinely in love and have respect for each other.

    • Kim says:

Hey I’m a Loonie but even I am bemused by your comment. The movie will rule 2015 Oscars, Really? Also let’s see if we can one day without bringing up the Triangle

    • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Did anyone see ‘In The Land Of Blood And Honey’?

I did. I thought it was great–brutal to watch, much harder than Schindler’s List (for me to watch anyway), and the ending had me flat out crying, even though it was around five in the morning, and I’d been up all night.

I’m glad that Angelina is going into directing, that seems like a really unexpected move, especially for an actress. I’m glad she didn’t just talk about it, she went out and did it. I’m so tired of these actors saying in interviews that they want to direct, they want to have kids, and so on–they spend ten years talking about what they want to do, while making shitty projects–it’s annoying.

But yeah, Maya you don’t need to be so uptight, it was a joke. Angelina had quite a reputation before and during her having kids and starting her humanitarian work–it’s a well deserved reputation, because I remember in 2009 (I remember the year because of that nude Cannes gown that she wore) looking at her in that dress and just thinking how beautiful and sensual she was–this was right around the time I started getting interested in fashion and jewelry (although not on myself!!)

      I LOVED that dress…still do.

THIS is where the Empress gets her side eye.

      • Andrea1 says:

Yes she never spoke about it she just went on and did it.. The woman is just one of a kind..

      • Spooks says:

There was a discussion about TLOBAH, and I would rather we don’t repeat it.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

        @Spooks
The last discussion I’m aware of was when people were either speculating that Angelina had a bit of a savior complex about this movie (can’t remember any examples why), and the fact that people were tearing apart a film they hadn’t seen, because they assumed that the main (bosnian) character falls in love with the commandant of the camp i.e. her rapist–which isn’t true.

        Is that it?

What were your feelings on the film? I’ve heard that everything in it was very accurate, that she worked with people in the country to make sure everything was right, but I personally wouldn’t know.

  7. Kcaia says:

I absolutely loved this book. Louis Zamperini’s story is so moving and Im excited that Angelina is directing it.

  8. AllyUK says:

Gorgeous. I was going to say watch out Brad. He has the best voice…. sigh.

  9. Corrie says:

Like Garrett – he’s a good actor but not great. Waiting for his moment I guess. He easily blends into the background sometimes.

  10. Mew says:

He actually looks Brad Pitt-ish, but loads younger.

  11. Spring Season says:

Wasn’t Angelina’s last starring role “SALT”?

  12. Kim says:

Salt released July 2010 , Tourist December 2010

The comments section of this blog is the BEST!! Y’all make my morning.

I can’t believe Angelina has been away form the screen this long. Maleficent is gonna be her first movie in 4years wow! I just can’t wait may 30th sounds better even though its like 8months away! Disney is just making us wait long but I believe its going to be worth the wait!! As it will blow the box office away.
Disney release a poster or a trailer already we are hungry for a little peep from maleficent! This is my favourite fan made poster So far! http://wpc.556e.edgecastcdn.net/80556E/img.site/PHbPY20o4Tw9ef_1_m.jpg. http://th01.deviantart.net/fs70/PRE/i/2012/215/2/6/maleficent___teaser_poster_by_graphuss-d59mqn1.jpg

  15. Mira says:

Love Garrett. He looks like Christian Bale with the slicked-back hair and beard. I don’t see the Pitt resemblance. Charlie Hunnam has the Brad vibe going on than Hedlund.

  16. mkyarwood says:

Aw, Kiki would be pretty destroyed if the side crumpet thing were true. She’s pretty unlucky in the relationship category, and I think her alcoholism took a severe turn after her break up with Gyllenhall.

  17. Claudia says:

Holy crap, I thought that was Charlie Hunnam. It’s the beard.
