Claire Danes in Armani Prive at the Emmys: gorgeous or unflattering?

I must have been the only person who wasn’t worked up about Claire Danes’ haircut at last night’s Emmys. Yes, she had longer hair just a few weeks ago and yes, I think longer hair suits her. But it’s not like we’ve never seen her with a bob before! She used to rock a bob all the time. At this point in her life, the bob doesn’t look all that “fresh” though. It looks more like a mom-haircut. Which is fine. She’s a mom now.

Claire won Best Actress in a Drama last night for Homeland. Her gown is Armani Prive… and that was what I was looking at, not her hair. Claire is very thin. She’s always been very thin. It’s just her body type, and it’s fine. But the dress accentuated one of the most uncomfortable parts of Claire’s thin frame: her very bony chest plate. Maybe if there had been more fabric and coverage in the breast area, I would have liked this dress. As is, it just seems… blah. Not right for Claire.

Two other Homeland ladies – a glowingly pregnant Morena Baccarin in Alexander McQueen and her screen-daughter Morgan Saylor in Honor. Morena looks beautiful! Morgan looks great too, I just hope we don’t see much of Morgan in this new season.

Claire Danes is a carpenter’s dream.

  2. Anna says:

When I first saw Claire Danes, I thought it was January Jones. Girl, you do NOT want to be confused JJ. You play for different leagues in every way.

The rest of the Homeland ladies looked good.

  3. what..the says:

This dress is so unflattering even my husband was WTF is she wearing lol

    • Liv says:

Yep. I mean nothing’s wrong with her body type, but I wouldn’t wear the dress either and I’m not that flat. It’s just unfortunate. Her stylist must hate her.

    • karen says:

It’s dreadful!! Wrong color. Wrong design. Just dreadful.

    • Kim says:

Awful! Dresses that deep v down the front are not flattering on anyone regardless of chest size. The worst dress of the night besides Lena Dunhams.

    • TherapyCranes says:

It’s very ugly. It washes her out and doesn’t do anything for her body.

    • Sassy says:

The dress would look hideous on a full breasted woman and certainly was awful on Claire’s flat bosom. Just an awful cut on any figure. Beautiful fabric, though.

  4. Sixer says:

I have a breastplate like that. I have a bob like that. I think I’ve found a long lost twin. So where’s MY award? I don’t mind what it’s for; I just want one.

  5. Tanguerita says:

    horrible dress, horrible hairdo.
Has anyone else noticed how exceptionally malnourished most ladies looked on the red carpet? Even by Hollywood standards? I look at you, Julianna Margulies.

    • LakeMom says:

I think the dress is pretty…just not on her. It doesn’t suit her body type at all.

    • Sisi says:

yeah I was just in the presenters dress thread and Kelly Osbourne was the only one who did not have arms that looked like you could break them like twigs. This year seemed to have more severe thinness than previous years. A sad trend.

  6. DanaG says:

I hate the dress it is so unflattering on Clare and to be honest I didn’t even notice the haircut. LOL I love Morena’s gown she looks great.

  7. Kate says:

Claire looks lovely. The dress could have been hoisted upwards a centimeter or two, the straps are a little long, but otherwise perfect. I’m glad she resisted the temptation to do a full on Gatsby look with the hair and make-up.

Sarah Burton’s completely ruined McQueen. I’ve seen that a version of Monica’s dress in every cheap, nasty formal wear shop I’ve ever had the misfortune of setting foot inside. Why won’t she just go make ugly formal wear under her own name and hand over the reins of McQueen to someone who can do the brand justice.

    • LAK says:

Amen to that. Although, this particular McQueen dress design has been a label staple since 2009. They repeat in a different colour every season.

  8. Pastyousayyouneverknew says:

I thought she and January Jones looked almost exactly the same. Neither of them looked that great either.

  9. Faye says:

She’s looked so much better on the red carpet. I’m disappointed in her AND Armani. That dress is not only the worst possible color for her (I say this as someone with a similar complexion), it’s cut so poorly. To me, it actually made her look kind of chubby around the underarm/boob area, which she surely isn’t! What an all around mess.

Morgan Saylor looked great, even though I hate the character of Dana with the heat of 1000 suns. Morena glowed, and red is definitely her color. I feel for her; it must be hard to be that pregnant on the red carpet!

  10. GlimmerBunny says:

I love Morena Baccarin’s look! She looks stunning and very glam 🙂

    • Spooks says:

She looks like Inara Serra in that deep red.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

This might be a weird question…but do they lighten her skin for the show?

What is her nationality? She is really really beautiful.

      • Mila says:

I don’t actually see the show (so I don’t know if they lighten her skin), but Morena is Brazilian and her name actually means “brunet” or “dark-skinned” (her parents were wise).

  11. Jayna says:

It’s a stunning dress, just not on her.

  12. Tessa says:

She’s built a bit like Keira Knightly. They are heavier on the bottom. If you looked at them from the waist down, you would not think they were too thin at all. It’s where they carry weight, while their top halves are all bone.

  13. Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Claire Danes looks awful. I don’t like the color–she should’ve gone darker–and yeah, her boobs/chest are kinda killing the look.

I don’t know, it’s kind of weird seeing her husband now–I had a sex dream about him last night and that’s weird–considering it was him and me, and not him and Mads Mikkelsen (considering how much Hannibal fanfiction I read–they got Will/Hannibal on lock).

  14. steph says:

    Hugh Dancy!!<3

  15. Miss so and so says:

Claire didn’t cut her hair she said in an interview that it was a faux bob.

    • emmie_a says:

Yeah she just pinned-up her hair, which is why this looks so stiff and awful.

Her dress isn’t bad – but it’s not made for her (even if it was made for her!). She is too bony on top to carry off a neckline like that. The color didn’t do anything for her either.

  16. Kiddo says:

The back looks okay, the front looks heavy and is pulling what little she has down. Plus she’s wearing a fairy good witch dress in color and style, but her hair says she is going to a high powered board meeting. Maybe if the hair was softer or the color of the dress was darker and more constructed it may have worked.

  17. Splinter says:

The chest area of that dress looks ridiculous, like a small girl trying on mom’s dress, it ruins what would otherwise be a nice look.

  18. Sisi says:

Morgan was one of the best dressed in my opinion.

  19. Janet says:

Danes and that dress were a bad match.

  20. Josephine says:

The whole thing made her look so old. Unflattering all around, and why, why would anyone do that to their poor breasts??

  21. TG says:

He’s Claire’s dress needs to be pulled up another inch or two. As it looks now it looks like she has fat peeking out the sides.

  22. Cazzee says:

Hmm….her husband couldn’t be bothered to take a shower before getting dressed for a major awards show? Does that seem strange?

  23. Mabs says:

One hundred percent WRONG dress. 🙁

  24. Darlene says:

She looks horrible. If she had pulled the dress up about two inches, it would have been classic and lovely, but as is, SO unflattering.

  25. grabbyhands says:

I don’t get the obsession with these kind of non-color gowns that keep popping up on the red carpet. They almost always make whoever is wearing them look totally washed out. She and January Jones both made this mistake and it’s too bad because a stronger color would have benefited them both. Also, the cut on this gown is bad for her.

    • Vesta says:

I’m not too keen on this non-colour trend either. When the dress itself is already quite simplistic and they add a non-colour to it, the combo just often feels too bleak for these kind of situations. But maybe they work better live than in pictures.

  26. MeowuiRose says:

Her skin looked off. The dress would of been better if it didn’t accentuate her boney chest.

  27. Nikollet says:

The dress would be much better with a different neckline, this style just doesn’t suit flat chested girls.

Ladies, when your dress makes your boobs look more like pecs, then perhaps choose a style that accentuates what you’ve got, rather than drawing attention to what you don’t have!

  28. Megan says:

I like Claire Daines and I think had they styled her hair differently (think Elizabeth Moss) she would have looked better but they went to newscaster with it. However, that dress was terrible and so was the makeup. She is extremely thin, yes but more importantly she is extremely pale, and as an extremely pale person you can’t wear those colors or a red lip!

  29. roxy750 says:

Girl, stop showing off what you don’t have. As a woman of the same “chest size”, I tend to make the fact I have no boobs an illusion and at least try to dress appropriate. That is something you DO NOT want to showcase. Just sayin.

    • Becky1 says:

Agreed. I have a bony chest and wear an A/B cup (depends on the time of the month)and I would never wear a dress that’s cut that way. She’s a very small busted girl and I give her credit for not getting implants but that is not a flattering dress. She’s cute and can look much better than that.

  30. Leila in Wunderland says:

It’s ok. I like the red dress.

  31. Shelly says:

Claire did not cut her hair. She said on the red carpet that her hairstylist pinned it under.

That being said, I hate her dress.

  32. buell says:

I bet she gets tired of hearing you belong to the Itty Bitty Titty Club…. I know I do… and women are more catty about it than men.

  33. Gigi says:

Please HIDE your dancer chest. No one wants to see it. Goldie Hawn used to try the same thing. Double EWWW. ewwwww.

  34. Wendy says:

Danes didn’t cut her hair…it’s a faux bob.

  35. Dominique says:

Fire your stylist, Claire, but first fire your colorist. So brassy. So unflattering.

    • taxi says:

Her hair is never flattering. It’s always brassy with brown roots, sometimes a little ombre-fade between the brown & the brass, and often dried scraggly ends. Maybe she wants it to go with her horse-y face.

That dress style doesn’t work on “2 fried eggs” chests.

  36. Maggie says:

Claire Danes is beautiful. But not last night. Ugh! Hair, dress make-up…all awful. Lol at the carpenters dream comment.

  37. Kosmos says:

I have to agree about the bodice of the dress being completely unflattering, wow…Claire? Who would wear something so unflattering? About the color, yes, it’s pale, but she can pull it off okay, and the hair isn’t my favorite, but looks attractive nevertheless…

  38. Norman says:

Clare sort of looks like Callista Gingrich with her hair. Very Stepford wife looking.

  39. mzizkrizten says:

Poor Claire. Cover her head and she looks like a thin man in drag.

  40. GByeGirl says:

If the straps had been 2 inches shorter, Claire’s dress would have been perfection.

I love the bob, but not with the curled under ends. Have it a bit wavy, or mega straight.

I love that she and Kate Hudson rock their flatter chests.

  41. Ann says:

I was shocked……she looked AWFUL in that dress ! I was embarrassed for her.
