Tilda Swinton donated £1,247 for the funeral of a prominent Russian LGBT advocate

Here are some new photos of our Official Queen, Tilda Swinton. Tilda was attending the Hamburger Filmfest premiere of the movie Only Lovers Left Alive last night, and she ended up picking up the Douglas Sirk Award. I’m assuming her badass suit/tuxedo is Haider Ackermann. She looks so righteous. I love her. The only thing that would have made these photos better would have been if Tom Hiddleston had stopped by to hold her hand and dance with her.

Continuing the “Tilda Swinton is an amazing person” theme, have you heard the story about Tilda’s balls-out support for the Russian LGBT community? Russia has been trying to legislate-away their gay people and it’s led to some violent protests and violent crackdowns on those protesters. Last week, a prominent Russian activist died. And Tilda paid for his funeral:

All-round perfect person Tilda Swinton has donated £1,247 to cover the funeral of Alexey Davydov, a prominent gay Russian activist who died last week at age 36 following a long illness.

Davydov died Friday in Moscow after slipping into a coma. Though the cause of his death remains unclear, Davydov’s legal aid, Pavel Chikov, told BuzzFeed that a police beating may have been a contributing factor:

“During the month he spent in the hospital with multiple fractures, Davydov — who was also diabetic — learned that he had acute kidney failure and subsequently spent large amounts of time undergoing dialysis. Police, however, claimed that they did not break Davydov’s arm; neither they nor the Investigative Committee, Russia’s equivalent of the FBI, began proceedings to look into the beating.”

Fellow activist, the controversial Nikolai Alekseev, said that Davydov made an “enormous contribution” to the Russian LGBT movement since 2006 and that he “dedicated all his life to activism.” Alekseev, however, refuted the BuzzFeed article, calling it the “worsening of American pederastia.”

Alekseev helped organize an online bid to cover the costs of Davydov’s funeral expenses and with Swinton’s donations they actually surpassed their goal. The Oscar-winning beauty had previously shown her support for the plight of LGBT Russians when she flew a rainbow flag in Moscow back in July. Davydov was buried this morning in a cemetery outside Moscow.

That’s some of the best money Tilda has ever spent, I’m sure. This brought a tear to my eye! We should all be so lucky to have Tilda in our lives, looking after us and being so f—king righteous.

    Go Tilda!

Did anyone see that Putin has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize?

    • MeowuiRose says:

      For what!!????!!”

    • CaribbeanLaura says:

@tfanty, ur kidding right? They’re being ironic RIGHT? Gah next they’ll nominate it to Robert Mugabe or some such BS.

    • Sixer says:

Sigh. Oh well, I guess he can pair up with Barack Drone Obama. Such well known peaceniks. The Nobel Peace Prize process is beginning to resemble the Olympic or FIFA bidding processes.

      • T.Fanty says:

Presumably for digging his heels in over Syria. Which was, obviously, an act of pure altruism.

@Sixer; my first thought was “well, if they gave one to Obama….”

      • Nono says:

If Barack can get a Nobel for peace, I say just hand them out to everyone.

    • Kit says:

To be fair, getting *nominated* for any Nobel prize only requires an expert in the field (e.g. a professor) to submit your name to the committee. It’s not an official endorsement at all (even Hitler was nominated one year).

    Such a great suit.

Even the way she holds her trophy is unique.

Why not just make this site just about Tilda and Cate Blanchett?

Now, this is charity at its best. By a person I already adored and now adore more.

Not just lip service to a cause, but actual personal involvement with an individual who represented the struggle.

  12. Hakura says:

That was such a lovely thing for her to do… & it’s obvious she’s actively keeping up with whats’ happening there in Russia, as opposed to just paying lipservice like so many other celebrities do.
