Meg Ryan steps out with John Mellencamp amid news of her new starring role on TV

FFN_Ryan_Mellencamp_METAND_101413_51233026

Here are some new photos of Meg Ryan and her boyfriend John Mellencamp taking a walk in NYC yesterday. John had a cigarette and Meg had a bottle of water. They’ve been together for about THREE YEARS. Can you believe that? It feels like yesterday that we were shocked that they had become crusty lovers. And now they’re something of a quiet but established couple. I haven’t heard any drama about them in years. I think they just live in NYC with Meg’s adopted daughter Daisy and they live a relatively quiet life.

But that kind of quiet life is expensive isn’t it? I’ve been wondering about Meg’s finances for a while, and I think the moves she’s been making show that Meg needs a cash infusion. First, she managed to get herself a People Mag cover story a few weeks ago, even though the story was just “she’s not living in LA anymore, her life is quiet nowadays and she’s not interested in living the Hollywood lifestyle” blah blah bullsh-t. You know why it’s bullsh-t? Exhibit 1: that face says (to me) that she still cares very much about an LA lifestyle. That face says “I’m terrified of looking even a little bit old, please see me as the sexy, bubbly rom-com queen again!”

So, the People Mag thing was the first step. The next step was actually securing Exhibit 2: a job. In the past few years, Meg has only done some guest spots on TV shows, she hasn’t done a movie since 2008. Well, now she’s scored a lead role (and a producer credit) in her own NBC pilot. The show will be about “a sunny, devoted and desperately non-confrontational single mom who decides to return to work at her former publishing house, where she will be supervised by her 30-year-old former intern.” Sounds like a total loser to me, but then again, I’m not a former movie star who needs $$$.

Also on part of her master plan – pap shots of herself and her boyfriend. So enjoy.

You’re too hard on her. She’s getting papped because she has a new project coming out. Pretty much this exact pic was taken when they first got together, and then interest fell off. It’s not like they are all of sudden walking the streets of NYC for pap pics.

And maybe she needs money, or maybe she just wants to work more as her daughter is older. Yeesh, too much judgment for someone who hasn’t even frickin done anything yet (except for that awful plastic surgery — hard not to judge that awful, awful plastic surgery).

    • MrsB says:

I agree!! That was pretty harsh. We haven’t seen much of her in the past few years. I’m sure if she wanted to, she could have remained much more in the spotlight.

I have always had a soft spot for Meg Ryan so I will at least be checking out her show to see if it’s any good.

    • Janel says:

Why say “adopted” daughter? She WAS adopted. It is not IS adopted. My sons were adopted. It happened once, and now they are my sons. We are very open in talking about it, but it is not a label I find necessary.

      • Dorothy#1 says:

I agree, I’m adopted and I hate when people always refer to a child as adopted!

      • Ag says:

@Janel – totally agree. It’s her daughter, no qualifier necessary.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

Josephine didn’t say adopted, she just said daughter.

      • Kim1 says:

When Bob Hope died at age 100 the media mentioned his adopted children
His children were in their sixties and seventies and still called adopted children. SMH

      • mayamae says:

I do hate that the article mentioned her “adopted” daughter. Nicole Kidman’s kids will forever be called adopted – it’ll be in their obituaries. I kind of like how Marie Osmond handles the very rude question of which of her kids are adopted – “I don’t remember.”

    • pam246 says:

@Josephine: Agree. I don’t know why people keep saying that anytime a celebrity is photographed, it’s a publicity stunt. Anytime a celebrity is in the news, good or bad, paparazzi follow them more.

    • TheOriginalKitten says:

I know…I actually felt bad for her reading this. Pretty harsh indeed.

    • kiki says:

I totally agree. This kind of snarky and nasty article is exactly why she remains low key.

    • campbell says:

I’ve always loved MR so what she’s done to her pretty face upsets me. But yeah, I don’t think she was trolling for paps, just out living her life. Period.

    • And, really, I mostly judge her doctor for that. This is not what she asked for.

  2. blue marie says:

Can I ask a question about this, did she steal John from his ex-wife? or is that something I made up? I thought I read that and she hacked me off so I haven’t paid much attention since then but I used to love her. Her lips look painful.

    • Frida_K says:

I went to graduate school in Bloomington, IN (John lived in the vicinity) and he had a terrible reputation for being a man-ho. I had a few friends who were from the area and the stories that they could tell…!

On that note–I was not surprised when I read about his son’s violent activity. It sounds like they grew up in a mess of dysfunction.

Oddly enough, though, I hope that things work out for Meg and John. They certainly do like like a cute, elderly set of twins who will just get cuter and more look-a-like as they get older.

    • atorontogal says:

Didn’t she run off with Russel Crowe while still married to Dennis Quaid? She was also best friends with JM’s wife before the two of them suddenly got together. Personally and obviously I’m no fan of hers. If she could act I’d be more supportive but I think she was good on the soap opera and that is all.

      • Virgilia Coriolanus says:

From what I’ve heard, when she went with Russell Crowe, Dennis Quaid was already cheating on her (with randoms??)–I think he was doing coke then too.

      • Trashaddict says:

Her marriage to Dennis Quaid was already on the skids by that time, he has a reputation as a cheater, at least by the gossip sites. I think it was CDAN said Russell Crowe had a bet going with the film crew for Proof of Life that he could bed her in 10 different places before the end of filming (and won it?).
Well who knows, CDANers have been calling out Enty lately for BS blinds. But it was an interesting one.
I think Russell’s modus operandi was to get cast with women whose relationships were failing and then “rescue” them. Look at who he’s co-starred with. In his prime, not such a bad thing…..

    • Cazzee says:

Yes, that’s what we heard from our neighbor (who is friends with Elaine, his-now-ex-wife).

According to our neighbor, it was devastating to Elaine at the time – can you imagine being dumped for Meg Ryan, the Meg Ryan of today? – in part because she was so young when she married Mellencamp that she’d never really dated and didn’t have much life experience to fall back on. But happily she has been able to move on with her life since then.

      • blue marie says:

well I’m extremely glad to hear that for her.

      • jason says:

Nicley made up. Meg was never friends wih Elaine Mellencamp.

      • holly hobby says:

I remember Elaine Irwin being an up and coming model and she sort of gave it up to be with him. He is the Sean Penn of musicians. I’m glad he’s out of her life.

      • Cazzee says:

It was my neighbor who was/is Elaine Mellencamp’s friend.

I have no idea who Meg Ryan’s friends are – but I imagine that they keep a close eye on their husbands when she’s around since these events happened…

      • Maggie says:

Jason – read again. CAZZEE is friends with the neighbor of Elaine, not that Meg and Elaine were friends. Sheesh. And really – we don’t know if they were friends. Let’s pull back on that anger, buddy.

      • jason says:

Yes, apparently she moved on very, very quickly and married_*Who?

      • Alita says:

I think it’s possible @Jason is on a mobile – it’s hard to get the replies correctly directed when on the CB mobile site, they all blur together. Someone upthread said that Meg Ryan is friends with JCM’s first wife. I’ve no idea of it’s true, just speaking to the mobile site layout. I missed the new site trial the other day, but maybe it will make mobile comment threads easier.

    • mayamae says:

I don’t feel too bad for his 2nd ex considering she helped break up his first marriage.

  3. Scarlett says:

If that’s a pap walk she should have brushed her hair – they both look like Worzel Gummidge.
    S xoxoxo

  4. tiki says:

sooo…it’s legal for twins to date now?

  5. Kaye says:

On the People magazine cover, her lips don’t look jacked at all. She looks like the old Meg.

  6. Fifedogg says:

Is he still married? Why is he wearing a band on his wedding ring finger?

    • Stef Leppard says:

I think I saw somewhere a whole ago that they were both wearing bands on their wedding fingers.

  7. brin says:

A bit o/t but I saw that Susan Serandon and her daughter are going to do a show for NBC too…guess NBC is getting the ready to retire crowd.

    • Jayna says:

Meg is in her early fifties, hardly retirement age.

      • brin says:

Bet the audience will be. Not that there is anything wrong with that.

      • Liberty says:

“Crusty,” elderly, older — yet isn’t she only two years older than Brad Pitt, Quentin Tarantino, and Marc Jacobs?

        Hm.

“Older designers like Marc Jacobs….” “Hollywood’s older stars, like Brad Pitt….”

“A new film by the elderly and crusty Quentin Tarantino..”
Hmm. And let’s not forget another senior born the same year as Meg….. “Enough Said is a new film starring the crusty Julia Louis-Dreyfus.” Hm!

      • Alita says:

I get that @Brin is speaking to the audience and not Meg herself. But some of the other comments really are making MR sound far longer in the tooth than she it – comon’ sisters, don’t settle for the out-moded construct that women are on the shelf at 40 because they have nothing to offer than looks … I wager most of you guys have more to you than a face that you keep by the door to put on (Eleanor Rigby ref 😉 … !

    • msm says:

Halle Berry is going to tv, too. And let’s not kid ourselves, the late 40’s, early 50’s and older actresses are not getting their doors knocked down with other offers. People get offended when someone says “older” actresses, etc, but it’s true (as much as all of us “older” ladies wish it wasn’t).

      • Megan says:

Halle Berry is doing a summer series which is different and its limited.

And not for nothing, and I say this as someone in their early 30s, but the average age of women on TV is early to mid 40, at least the highly rated and acclaimed shows. Also even in my late teens and through out my 20s I’d rather watch these women in their 40s and 50s because they were interesting. I don’t care about teens, or 20s. I do care about people in their 30s, 40, 50+.

TV is investing in good stories and great characters. Movies and the CW is all about young but most TV is having older characters.

Meg Ryan’s issue was she is Rom Com and only Rom Com which Hollywood isn’t making and frankly at 51 well the search for love isn’t cute or funny its sort of sad. You don’t mind the mess up 30 year old but if you are still a mess at 50 then really? She type casted herself so much in film that she pushed herself out of film.

  8. Zbornak Syndrome says:

I love a simple, single breasted pea coat. Also love that Mellancamp smokes and doesn’t pretend to be healthy. Looking at YOU Natalie Portman. She is vegan, but loooves to suck on a cig. SOOO healthy.

  9. Mia4S says:

One of the more pathetic Hollywood things I ever saw was Meg Ryan in the documentary “Searching for Debra Winger” talking about how she had never been more confident, at peace, and strong as a women…in complete contradiction to the horrible plastic surgery she’d had done to her face. It was actually really sad.

  10. Loralei says:

I think that TV show sounds like a looser too. Just about a week or so before that people magazine article came out, there was an article in the NY Post that listed her as one of the top ten actors that lost their careers due to bad plastic surgery. There was a pretty brutal picture of her, so when the People magazine article came out I just thought it was in retaliation to that, kind of like damage control. I too, dislike it when they say “adopted”.

    • Christin says:

It will be interesting to see how she appears on screen. She may end up being like 1950s actress Gloria Grahame, whose facial expressions and speech were messed up by too much plastic surgery.

  11. Kittykat says:

They are interesting… but give her a break.

  12. Suezen says:

Oh my. Am I the only one who is seeing John Cougar’s Mellen-Dong in the second picture? It’s way too early for that.

  13. Dawn says:

I like Meg. I am glad her lips look more normal now and hope she never does that again. I hope she allows herself to age gracefully and I hope she and her new show do well.

    • Hautie says:

      Ditto.

I also suspect she is still friggin filthy rich. She just never struck me as a female who blew threw money like a crazy person.

There is also that divorce from Dennis and they both had worked all through the marriage. Lots of income. I just doubt she is doing a show for cash.

And I will forever be a fan of Meg’s… because I just loved Kathleen Kelly!

      • gogoGorilla says:

Yeah, I also find it hard to believe she could be having financial difficulties. She was in a long string of some of the biggest hit movies in the 90s–and some of those movies rerun on the movie channels all the time. When Harry Met Sally is my NYE movie every year. Her range has always been somewhat limited, but I loved her and Billy Crystal in that.

Her face, though. Ouch. Maybe she’ll lay off the injections and start to look more normal.

      • t says:

I was thinking the same thing, Hautie. I don’t know how reliable the site celebritynetworth is, but they say she is worth 45 million.

She was in a ton of stuff years ago, so it could be true and maybe she isn’t doing the show for money.

        http://www.celebritynetworth.com/richest-celebrities/actors/meg-ryan-net-worth/

  14. chloe says:

I still have a soft spot for Meg Ryan, From When Harry Met Sally to Sleepless in Seattle, I loved those movies when I was in my early twenties. I think she disappeared for awhile because of the backlash she got with the whole Russell Crowe affair, I hope her sitcom does well. I can’t say anything nice about her boyfriend, I’m from Indiana, I’ve seen him in concert several times, the last time we were right next to the stage and Elaine and his then two young sons were with him and he ashed his cigarette on them and screamed at them a couple of times, real nice. Meg may want to second guess letting him be involved in her daughters life since his two sons just got arrested for beating the hell out of some guy.

  15. eliza says:

Can’t believe he’s still smoking with the bad ticker and throat he has.

Her series sounds like a sure path to cancellation city.

  16. Lflips says:

Gross, I find them both painful to look at.

  17. Kiddo says:

    What is the show about?

    • joy says:

Did you read the story, cause it says what the show is about.

      • Kiddo says:

Ha, I did, but somehow skipped the very end. Maybe subconsciously I was avoiding it. Or maybe it was so boring I already forgot about it.

      • TheOriginalKitten says:

I read it and forgot what it was about instantly.

It could be yet another cop drama or a family sit com. Point remains that I shan’t be watching it.

      • Alita says:

I remembered without looking back … a woman returning to the workforce where her new manager is a 30yo that used to be her intern. This is vaguely me, the ex-intern character, so it made me snort. Ultimately though it’s about mutual respect so I don’t know how they can make a whole show about it, even if the manager sucks … it’s like, wow they’re a douche, they bite … now let’s find another 20 mins of screen play!

  18. Boodiba says:

I can’t believe she’d walk next to him while he’s wearing those disgusting sweats. Ewww, ewww & ewww.

When I was 25 I was working in an art gallery on 57th St. He walked in with an entourage, smoking a cigarette like a complete asshole. WHO walks into an art gallery smoking?

I did the, “And you are???” snotty receptionist routine on him. Was fun. He struck me as a total douche.

    • Shannon1972 says:

Ha! Love it!! The receptionist for a famous fashion designer I worked for was a master at that routine. Cut obnoxious celebs down to size quite neatly. It was something to see.
But many celebs who came in were lovely people…no routine necessary. 🙂

  19. Jayna says:

I hate when media sites say adopted daughter, adopted son. She’s her daughter. How sad it has to be inserted every time her daughter is mentioned.

I think Meg has been low key and isn’t pap hungry, and if she wants to work, she’s still young and her daughter is now in school. I doubt she feels like she should be put out to pasture.

The lips are unfortunate looking still, but the rest of her face seems less filler and her age from the photo. Hard to tell with the sunglasses, though.

    • Alita says:

Agreement @ Jayna. I get talking about the adoption when it occurs, that seems reasonable. After that, it should be straight ‘son’ or ‘daughter,’ unless there’s a specific reason to mention it.

    • JaNIL says:

Meg is still young, but by Hollywood standards she is very old.

The types of roles the got, now go to younger actresses.

Also, the blue-eyed blond, cute dimpled look is no longer in vogue. Meg was pretty when she was young, but she had little acting talent. She had a very narrow range of roles that she could portray in films. She always starred in romantic comedies, and portrayed a character much like herself in real life. That’s not hard to do, almost anyone could have acted in these roles.

  20. janie says:

I love Meg & John… I hope her show is a raging success! There are quite a few movie people who have TV shows now. I too don’t like the word adopted, not necessary. I wish her all the luck & I will watch

  21. kct says:

Years ago I was very into a guy who smoked, and the romance and passion overtook the aversion to a point…so I can understand her tolerance. He’ll be the guy who will smoke until he’s 90 and die of something unrelated.

They are obviously very compatible and I wish them well.

    • lrm says:

I think Meg is also a regular smoker….there have been pap shots of she and cougar smoking regularly….

  22. Debbie says:

I like Meg Ryan a lot but the show sounds se what dumb. Not to mention a tad offensive but the worst part is it’s going to be on NBC!!! Which means even if it is good who will remember to watch it.

Wish her the best but don’t see this going well.

  23. Audrey says:

John should be heard, not seen.

This is ruining his music for me ughhhh

  24. Fan says:

I am glad to see her back again.

  25. Kate says:

She’s wasting her time. As horrible as it sounds, she’s messed up her face to the point where it’s painful to look at her. No one wants to see that. The only way she could have a successful project is if she was willing to do a show or film that acknowledged and made fun of her terrible plastic surgery, and that’s not going to happen.

    • Esteree says:

Kate, The Over dramatic comments about any PS are laughable. Looking forward to her show and will be watching and, still think she’s cute. Saw her in Mercer Kitchen 6 months ago she looked great. There is nothing hideous about her

She was on Anderson Cooper’s show last yr about the half the Sky” project and looked good as well 🙂

      It’s right here,
      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LCx0CXJf67Q

      Melaine Griffin is FAR worse.

      • Kate says:

Watched the video. Sorry but she looked terrible. Her lips and eyes are beyond repair, she’s just done too much to them and there’s no going back. I actually find looking at her difficult. I’ve worked with burn victims who had less obvious damage, and it just kills me that someone would pay money to have someone do that to them. She must be in pain, her skin looks so fragile in some areas.

She also has appallingly bad botox and fillers. She’s completely frozen in areas a good doctor would never use more than a tiny hit of botox, which prevents her successfully making the most basic facial expressions. It looks like it’s an effort for her to simply speak normally. Her face is so puffy but her body is skinnier than ever, which makes her plumped out, shiny, stretched cheeks look even weirder than they would normally. It’s just all round terrible plastic surgery.

  26. Jane says:

Holly S***, what in the h*** happened to her face????

  27. Nothanks says:

    Lets see:
She owns a 10 million dollar house in shishi Matha’s Vineyard.

She just sold a 10 mill house in L.A.

Yeah, she hurting for money(Eye role), NOT!

Love Meg! Sorry people make up sh*t about you!

  28. Sammy says:

uhhhh She’s been papped ever since she moved to NYC a few yrs ago. This is nothing new.

  29. ParisPucker says:

Anyone else notice JMC’s wang in the last photo? Sorry, but it kind of leaped out of the photo and well, erm, oh-hot-dag am embarrassed now:/

  30. Stef says:

Oh gosh she looks like a pug…

  31. JaNIL says:

She stopped getting film roles a long time ago. She was replaced by Reese Witherspoon as “America’s Sweetheart”. Now Reese is also on the way out.

  32. Original Me says:

A long time ago I watched some sort of documentary or “day in the life” type show with JCM and Elaine Irwin (they were still married). JCM was totally mean and controlling to EI. He was making fun of her modeling career, etc. and just generally being a giant A-Hole. I just couldn’t stand him after that. He was so insecure that she was getting attention and he wasn’t.
