Lupita Nyong’o in Christopher Kane at BFI London premiere: gorgeous or boring?

wenn20774488

Here are some photos from the BFI London Film Festival premiere of 12 Years a Slave. Michael Fassbender – who is adamant about NOT campaigning for an Oscar – was not there. Neither was Brad Pitt, or Sarah Paulson or Alfre Woodard or Paul Dano or Benedict Cumberbatch (yes, he’s in the film too). The premiere was just director Steve McQueen, our newest fashion girl (and presumptive Best Supporting Actress nominee) Lupita Nyong’o and Chiwetel Ejiofor. I’m including pics of all three.

Lupita wore this little black Christopher Kane dress with metallic accents at the waist and side cut-outs. I have a mostly “meh” feeling about this dress, mostly because Lupita has been so noteworthy and fashion-forward thus far. This feels like just some knock-off version of the Herve Leger bandage dress, which is to say… boring and overdone. That being said, if Lupita wants to sartorially phone it in, I’m glad she’s doing it at a venue like the London Film Festival instead of, say, the Golden Globes. Besides, the dress isn’t even that bad. It’s just kind of boring and obvious. From the neck up, she’s still stunning and breathtakingly beautiful.

Chiwetel looks handsome, doesn’t he? I’m completely over those knit ties, but otherwise he looks great. I do sort of wonder if producers (maybe Brad, maybe someone else) are pushing Chiwetel out there on purpose and holding back the supporting stars of the film. This is the second time in a week where Chiwetel and Lupita were pretty much the only standard-bearers for the film at a major premiere. It’s not that anyone involved with the film, white or black, is embarrassed – not at all. But I think the producers are trying to put the focus more on Chiwetel and Lupita. I wonder if that’s where the Oscar campaign money will go too?

    PERFECT!!!

  2. blue marie says:

She looks beautiful, all of them look good. I think I’m a bit partial to her in bold colors though.

I hope the campaign money does go toward getting them an Oscar, I really want Chiwetel to win.

  3. stellalovejoydiver says:

I dislike the dress, but as it was stated many times before, girl can wear a potato sack and still look stunning, that face.

  4. AlmondJoy says:

I can’t get past her FACE! That’s all she needs to look gorgeous at all times. She’s stunning in whatever she wears.

  5. Barbara says:

It is nice to see a young woman dressed in regular clothes, not trying to show her private parts.

  6. aims says:

    she’s stunning.

  7. Spooks says:

She is gorgeous, but the dress is meh. When was she fashion forward? Her dresses were always very basic.

    • Bubbles says:

She’s a great actress, but her fashion sense is boring. And she’s not all that beautiful either.

      • AlmondJoy says:

@Bubbles The fact that you said she’s “not all that beautiful” indicates that do indeed think she’s beautiful 😉

  8. Lucy Goosey says:

I think she’s one of the most gorgeous actresses in a long time. That face!

  9. LadySlippers says:

Gorgeous. I adore the dress. She looks classy, elegant, and very sexy.

But then again, she IS stunning. Even in a burlap sack she’d look beautiful.

  10. bammer says:

They should be putting the focus on Chiwetel. It’s about Damn time.

    • ichsi says:

Absolutely. I really think that this IS a reason why Fassbender stepped back. 90% of the coverage was about him or Brad or even Cumberbatch. Not sure if McQueen ordered them to stay down or they ‘re doing it out of respect towards Ejiofor (WHO IS THE MOST HANDSOME OF THE WHOLE LOT ANYWAY!! So yay for the ladies!!)

  11. GeeMoney says:

She’s so cute! I saw 12 Years a Slave yesterday, and she was phenomenal in it. So was Chiwetel.

Not really feeling the dress, though.

  12. Delta Juliet says:

    That is one beautiful woman.

  13. Eve says:

    Drop. Dead. Gorgeous.

  14. Kiddo says:

Super gorgeous. Sexy and understated. Wow.

  15. Janet says:

I love the dress. It’s sexy and elegant and classy and understated all at the same time. And she is wearing the hell out of it.

  16. truthful says:

I LOVE that dress, she looks fab!

  17. Elodie says:

Clothes on Lupita are not boring as in not ever until further notice. She is doing that dress all kind of favours, classy, elegant and gorgeous. I think it’s because of the Black colour that it may look basic, but really she is stunning.

I went to the premiere. McQueen is a very nice man, Chiwetel is very nice as well, even more gorgeous in person. Lupita was simply shining, and very humble, I got to talk to her for 5min and it was just amazing. I couldn’t help but get emotional while telling her that Patsey will haunt my mind for a while now; then we hugged 🙂

TYAS is such an intense and gutting experience. It’s still in mind since last Friday… Chiwetel is stupendous in portraying a man fighting for human dignity, Lupita as Pastey is simply touching to the heart and soul that it’s even bringing tears to my eyes as I’m typing, her character is the one still haunting me… and Fassbender embodying an evil and complex Epps was also top notch. Really all of the cast was in synch, all superb. I’m all in favour for McQueen & Chiwetel to grab the awards this year. I also went on to the screening of Half Of A Yellow Sun the day after, and the film is very good imo, recommended 🙂

P.S I still wanna be you when I grow up ;p

    • Violeta says:

Thanks for sharing your experience, really looking forward to watch the film as well.

    • Kim1 says:

I don’t know if I can handle seeing TYAS in a theater.I am extremely sensitive and emotional. I just started crying watching the interview of the fifteen year old boy looking for a adoptive family. He was on the View.

  18. Kit says:

    Her skin… damn!

She’s incredible to look at. Don’t like that dress at *all*, but she makes it look good just cos it’s her. I agree that bold colours suit her better.

  19. Faye says:

Loooove it (and her). It’s just different enough to be interesting, but still appropriate and elegant.

You know what I love about her pictures, besides the fact that she’s absolutely gorgeous? She’s always smiling and looks genuinely pleased to be at these events, unlike the snarling-faced pouting we see from some actresses. Hope that continues!

  20. The Original G says:

She looks gorgeous. Love it that she isn’t going try-hard.

  21. Lebry says:

    Amazing!

  22. bob says:

Thanks for the write up, Chiwitel could give an oscar-worthy performance reading the phonebook so I’m really looking forward to this film.

Lupita is flawless and I agree entirely with your sentiments.

  23. Nanea says:

    Lupita and Chiwetel FTW, seriously!

They’re both so good-looking and charismatic, and I wouldn’t mind seeing them nominated over Streep and Hanks.

  24. Grant says:

Holy cow, she looks amazing. AMAZING. I love this dress and it fits her like a glove. And those pumps are to die for. I can’t wait to see what she wears on Oscar night. Flawless, from head to toe.

  25. CaribbeanLaura says:

The love for Lupita warms my cockles. She is stunning, and it’s so nice to see someone young and gorgeous and who looks like me (only much better looking) taking holloywood by storm!! It makes me a little teary!

  26. Sixer says:

I think they are both beautiful.

  27. SG says:

Ugh. I NEED a close up of her face; it’s unbelievable. I could stare at her all day.

  28. ladybert62 says:

    Classy, sophisticated dress.

  29. tifzlan says:

    ALWAYS perfect

  30. drea says:

That face, that skin, that body! I like Lupita’s look here, simple and elegant. And Chewy’s cute too, as always.

  31. some bitch says:

She could wear a burlap sack and she’d still be stunning. The dress is so-so but she makes it look amazing.

  32. lucy2 says:

I think she looks amazing. I tend to like more classic/simple styles anyway, but on her they work and don’t seem boring, because she’s so pretty. You see HER – the dress is an after thought.

  33. themummy says:

I’m honestly bowled over by her immense beauty. Good Lord, that woman is gorgeous.

  34. RHONYC says:

    gorgeous & she’s got a bod that won’t quit. 😉

    *drops mic*

    • kaligula says:

      Lol totally +1

With that pretty face and sweet haircut she can do no wrong. And yes, her body. Can she act too? I haven’t seen the movie yet. If she has actual talent then please some good writer get a top notch script to her ASAP!!! Want to see more of her….

  35. Oops says:

She’s beautiful, elegant, not showing her ass or boobs, so for me it’s perfect (I hate all these actresses who are always half naked on red carpet)

  36. Naddie says:

I know it’s weird, but her skin makes me wanna bite her. No sexual intends, just wanna bite, cause the color is so uniform.

  37. miapatagonia says:

This made my day. Gorgeous, brilliant people. Gives me renewed energy for my love of movies again.

I saw 12YAS yesterday and came out of the theater in tears because the film was so beautifully done. Steve McQueen has become a complete director within a matter of 5 years. The cast was perfect, down to the smallest roles of the slaves with no dialogue. McQueen’s signature, meticulous compositions worked perfectly in giving us a sense of place for plantation life for the slaves. You were with them in the cotton and sugarcane fields, in the bayou, etc. Sean Bobbitt, the cinematographer who had worked on Hunger and Shame, should be recognized Oscar time for 12YAS. Along with Fassbender, Bobbitt plays a crucial role in helping McQueen tell a story visually.

The beating and whippings in the movie were not gratuitous and were not as difficult to watch as I was expecting. I watch a lot of movies and I have seen worse. What moved me to the core were the quieter moments of despair, humiliation, sense of loss, and the innate human dignity so naturally conveyed by Chiwetel Ejiofor and Lupita Nyong’o. They, along with Fassbender and Sarah Paulson, know how to act with their eyes and the planes of their faces. Exquisite. Go see this film.

  38. taylor says:

I agree with everyone saying she elevates the dress. She’s so lovely and looks so happy (which is a really nice bonus) that the dress almost doesn’t matter.

  39. Breada and Circuses says:

I’m afraid I can’t disassociate how awesome she looks from the dress, so–I like the dress. Possibly only because it’s on her and looking fabulous there.

  40. smee says:

Black really isn’t her color. Her figure is amazing and she’s quite beautiful – white or any color would have done more for her. That being said – gorgeous!

  41. Jo says:

I am fortunate to live in a city where the film opened last weekend. It has been on my calendar since I first heard about it. I saw it on Friday and it is one of the most remarkable films I have ever seen. The acting is extraordinary. The actors are all magnificent. Steve McQueen is a genius.
I know we will be hearing all these new names a lot in the future and I am already looking forward to award season.
Regarding this dress – she is a lot like Cate Blanchett and would look good in just about anything. I think she is gorgeous and incredibly talented. Her performance in TYAS was Oscar-worthy, as was that of Chiwetel Ejiofor.

  42. Au de toilet says:

    Wow…she is beautiful!!

  43. pieceout says:

Are you kidding with this headline? boring???!! She looks unbelievably gorgeous! She has such style.
