Blake Lively is the new face of L’Oreal: perfect choice or budget branding?

I think Blake Lively is pretty. That’s a controversial opinion, I guess. But I really do think she’s got a great, accessible prettiness. I always thought the haute-couture criticisms of Blake from Team Chanel people were actually dead-on: she shouldn’t be “the face” of a label like Chanel because her prettiness is so down-market. Which is to say, she’s got a girl-next-door freshness, a happy sunniness that doesn’t always translate so well to stuffy luxury labels. Blake belongs on the cover of Cosmo, not Vogue. Blake should represent H&M, not Chanel. Her work for Gucci is a joke too, just another attempt to make her seem “deeper” or more enigmatic than she could ever be. But Blake has a new endorsement deal, and I actually think this one might fit her look the best: she’s the newest face of L’Oreal!

Shiny hair. Hot husband. Burgeoning lifestyle empire. You wouldn’t have thought anything was missing from Blake Lively‘s life, but it turns out there was one last thing absent from her résumé: A major makeup campaign.

Well, you can stop feeling sorry for her, because that all changed today. According to the L’Oréal Paris Instagram account, Lively will be the brand’s newest face. Or as they put it, “Annonce exclusive: Nous souhaitons la bienvenue à la somptueuse et talentueuse Blake Lively, nouvelle ambassadrice L’Oréal Paris ! Définitivement elle le vaut bien!” (Rough translation thanks to three years of high school French: “Exclusive announcement! We’re excited to welcome the gorgeous and talented Blake Lively, our new lady ambassador! She’s definitely worth it!”)

[From People Mag]

Blake as the face of a makeup company that is in every CVS and grocery store in America? Yes. This is perfect. Plus, the message is absolutely dead-on – you too can look like Blake Lively with L’Oreal makeup. Which is true – she’s pretty, for sure, but she gets a lot of help from makeup and clothes. Which makes her accessible. I dislike when makeup/beauty companies hire really young starlets to represent their brand (I’m still side-eyeing Lancome’s work with Emma Watson and now Lily Collins), but on this collaboration, I’m all for it. This makes perfect sense.

[Whispers] Plus, it’s not like Blake has much else going on. She just signed on to her first movie role in more than two years. She’s going to launch a budget Goop site. And it’s not like she’s getting pregnant any time soon, I guess. These days, she does more modeling than acting.

She is pretty when her hair is down and she doesn’t have on too much makeup.

  2. QQ says:

That works and sounds about right about where she should aim… I.e.: TV

Even though I think she’s a mediocre actress, I like Blake. I like that she actually has a genuine interest in the whole lifestyle thing (even though it is an attempt to make a brand and stay in the news), and I like that she didn’t just talk endlessly about wanting to get married for 10-15 years–she went out and did it.

But girlfriend better start drinking water (remember that interview?), because her skin’s okay now, but she’s going to f-cked in 5-10 years if she doesn’t.

I agree, I think she has an actual interest in the lifestyle area. It’s possible she might actually launch a decent website!

I think Blake is gorgeous. Smokin’ hot body, beautiful face, and she always comes across as genuinely nice. I don’t think I’ve ever read anything about her acting like a diva.

Down-market? That’s a heck of an insult. She wore the fancy clothes on Gossip Girl right? I wasn’t really a fan of the show but every time I’d click past she always looked good. She has the body for the clothes so why not? Meh, I’m crabby cause I had to get up early..

  5. Ai says:

Interesting that Leighton Meester is now the face of Biotherm.

    • Jegede says:

Leighton has also been the face of Vera Wang, Missoni and is currently repping for the fashion Parisian fashion store Naf Naf as well as being the face of Biotherm, as you said.
They are both netting coins. Good for the 2 of them.!!

  6. Frida_K says:

Well, that’s one way to “curate” your lifestyle.

  7. MrsBPitt says:

If Kate Hudson can schill Almay, Blake can def sell me some L’Oreal…At least Blake has a likability, unlike Kate who always seems so full of herself. As a matter of fact, I know people compare Blake to Goop, however, I think Kate is the one with the “my fart’s don’t stink” attitude of the Goop!

  8. Sam H x says:

Aren’t Kate Hudson and Goop friends?…I like Blake, shes gorgeous, I envied the wardrobe she wore on Gossip Girl, I would have to love raid Serena’s closet, the stylist on the show did a great job styling all the girls on the show…She looks great in the last photo, I agree she looks better with her hair down and minimal make up…I thought she look good with the yellow Gucci dress she wore with her hair down at a fashion show recently…how is L’Oreal downmarket?! If someone threw a ton of money at me to schill beauty and hair products, I’d do it…Her and Ryan are low key as a couple, I like how they don’t broadcast their lives…I don’t understand the stories of him being allegedly controlling of her career…they are pretty boring as a couple (not that is a bad thing!) xx

  9. Jegede says:

Chanel, Gucci, L’Oreal. Get it girl!
I hope its for the follicles.
She has fantastic hair. And she remains me so much of Elaine Irwin.

    • Miss Melissa says:

Doesn’t L’Oreal own Kerastase? Blake and her hair would make excellent reps for them.

  10. MademoiselleRose says:

I watched Gossip Girl the first season only and I always thought she was beautiful, had a way about her that was attractive. She sure can wear clothes. I think it’s just the gossip columns that have turned me off her a bit. She seems a good fit with that brand and I’d rather look at her than a bunch of other women I can think of. She seems rather irrelevant now so doing this might keep her in the limelight and maybe another TV show might come along.

  11. BRE says:

I would be perfectly happy to look “down market” just like her. I think she is very beautiful, yes she has had some work done but it looks good, not overdone like so many other celebs.

  12. lauren says:

Blake Lively will always have a soft spot in my heart for playing Leonardo DiCapiro.
Yes, I think Loreal is a better fit / more believable than Chanel.

  13. Elle says:

She’s always reminded me of Helen Hunt, kind of long face and a wide nose. Although Blake’s is much smaller post nose job.

Her hair is really nice and her body is amazing though, she’s always come across as nice, in a non threatening, vanilla pudding way to me. Good for her.

  14. Jackson says:

She seems fine for L’Oreal and I do agree that she didn’t seem to fit with Chanel – in the same way JLaw doesn’t fit with Dior. It’s not a knock on either of them, or on L’Oreal, but I think it goes to show that signing any famous name isn’t quite enough. The face and the personality have to match the perception of the brand.

“I think Blake Lively is pretty. That’s a controversial opinion, I guess.”

I have always thought Blake is gorgeous, and I’ve never understood the amount of hate she gets from many. Is she going to win an Oscar anytime soon? Probably not, but I can name lots of actresses much worse (IMHO) who get plenty of work. If looking like this is “downmarket,” I’d hate to think what market I look like…basement-market? Gutter-market?

  16. Anna says:

Her face (nose) and body (boobs) didn’t come naturally, so all this talk about her prettiness and having the body for clothes really gives me a laugh.

    • Quinn says:

Having work done and having a great body for clothes aren’t mutually exclusive! Besides, even if she didn’t have her nose or boobs done she would still have a great body for clothes. It’s the legs, the height, the bone structure, the shoulder/waist/hip proportions that count for modelling and you can’t buy those.

  17. Bottle Brunette says:

Can you call it a “burgeoning lifestyle empire” when it hasn’t even begun to begin yet? It’s quite obvious that the story was written by her publicist.

  18. mercy says:

Good for her! She’s in some good company. Don’t like the eye makeup or the shoes, but the dress is interesting and looks cute on her. Curious about her new business and the movie with Ellen Burstyn.

  19. GiGi says:

I see far prettier women at the local mall. BUDGET.

  20. nicegirl says:

Great choice. I already buy lots of L’Oreal products, and think Blake is lovely. I agree

  21. India says:

    Totally budget.

  22. carrie says:

You forgot all the help she gets/got from plastic surgeons.
